This document discusses using microalgae to address issues of sustainable development and environmental management. It summarizes current problems with water resource management, eutrophication, and algal blooms negatively impacting lakes and other bodies of water. Determinants of Households Willingness to Pay for Conservation of Natural Koo...AI Publications
Most natural resources or environmental goods and services are exposed to degradation, society over utilize them for only their current benefits without thinking the future life span of these resources. The study analyzed determinants of households’ willingness to pay for conservation of natural Kool water (Burie Kool Wuha, W/Gojjam, Ethiopia). The contingent valuation method and Heckman two step model was employed. The results indicates that sex of the household head, education of the household, value attached to the resource by households as source of income, value attached to the resource by households reserving for future generation and wealth of the households has a significant and positive correlation with households WTP, and family size of households, education of the household and wealth of the households has a significant and positive correlation with the households payment levels. On the other hand, initial bid value has a negative correlation with the level of payments. Therefore, by taking the importance of the resource for the society and the households WTP, the policy makers need to focus on identified factors in designing strategies for the conservation of the resource.

Three major problems associated with our management of the world's ecosystems are already causing significant harm to some people, particularly the poor, and unless addressed will substantially diminish the long term benefits we obtain from ecosystems First, approximately 60 15 out of 24 of the ecosystem services examined during the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment are being degraded or used unsustainably, including fresh water, capture fisheries, air and water purification, and the regulation of regional and local climate, natural hazards, and pests. The full costs of the loss and degradation of these ecosystem services are difficult to measure, but the available evidence demonstrates that they are substantial and growing. Many ecosystem services have been degraded as a consequence of actions taken to increase the supply of other services, such as food. These trade offs often shift the costs of degradation from one group of people to another or defer costs to future generations. Second, there is established but incomplete evidence that changes being made in ecosystems are increasing the likelihood of nonlinear changes in ecosystems including accelerating, abrupt, and potentially irreversible changes that have important consequences for human well being. Introduction
Food and water are essential resources for human existence. With the increasing number of people globally, various strategies have been developed to increase agricultural productivity to meet the high demand. On the other hand, water is critical in meeting food needs (D'Odorico et al., 2018). However, there is a challenge in ensuring sustainable food and water security. Food and water are inseparable because agricultural production needs water, while the same process also affects water resources. Globalization has opened up markets leading to international trade, hence transferring the water and food security challenge from local to global levels. Therefore, food and water security sustainment has become complex due to interdependencies experienced globally. For instance, changes in socio-environmental and economic factors in a particular region are likely to impact another area's food and water security. As discussed, the drivers and contributors of globalization have severe impacts on food and water security, requiring appropriate interventions to promote food and water security.
Background of Food and Water Security
Food security entails access to adequate and safe food for all that meets their nutrient requirements and needs (Hameed et al., 2019). Therefore, food security covers issues of quantity and demand of the people. Food security is affected by production, distribution, and consumption systems influenced by agriculture and trade policies. Globally, food demand is steadily rising due to demographic growth as most parts of the world experience high population growth (D'Odorico et al., 2018). Moreover, the demand for products like those of animals has grown. However, with increased demand for animal products, livestock supply increases to meet the need. The situation has worsened food security, creating competition between crop production for human beings and livestock.
As the world is working to ensure enough food supply to cater to the growing demand, adverse environmental consequences are evident. For example, fertilizers and herbicides are used extensively in agriculture for faster and more yields. In the process, soil and water pollution has increased, leading to long-term adverse effects on food security (D'Odorico et al., 2018). Moreover, other secondary impacts like acid rain have resulted from the overapplication of commercial fertilizers. On the other hand, soil tillage has intensified, affecting soil formation and considerable loss.
The globalization of food systems has created numerous concerns on food security while causing adverse impacts on public health.
