The delta architecture
Lambda architecture is a popular technique where records are processed by a batch system and streaming system in parallel. The results are then combined during query time to provide a complete answer. Strict latency requirements to process old and recently generated events made this architecture popular. The key downside to this architecture is the development and operational overhead of managing two different systems.
There have been attempts to unify batch and streaming into a single system in the past. Organizations have not been that successful though in those attempts. But, with the advent of Delta Lake, we are seeing lot of engineers adopting a simple continuous data flow model to process data as it arrives. We call this architecture, The Delta Architecture.
Serverless Kafka and Spark in a Multi-Cloud Lakehouse Architecture
Apache Kafka in conjunction with Apache Spark became the de facto standard for processing and analyzing data. Both frameworks are open, flexible, and scalable.
Unfortunately, the latter makes operations a challenge for many teams. Ideally, teams can use serverless SaaS offerings to focus on business logic. However, hybrid and multi-cloud scenarios require a cloud-native platform that provides automated and elastic tooling to reduce the operations burden.
This session explores different architectures to build serverless Apache Kafka and Apache Spark multi-cloud architectures across regions and continents.
We start from the analytics perspective of a data lake and explore its relation to a fully integrated data streaming layer with Kafka to build a modern data Data Lakehouse.

Kappa vs Lambda Architectures and Technology Comparison
Real-time data beats slow data. That’s true for almost every use case. Nevertheless, enterprise architects build new infrastructures with the Lambda architecture that includes separate batch and real-time layers.
This video explores why a single real-time pipeline, called Kappa architecture, is the better fit for many enterprise architectures. Real-world examples from companies such as Disney, Shopify, Uber, and Twitter explore the benefits of Kappa but also show how batch processing fits into this discussion positively without the need for a Lambda architecture.

Apache Ranger Hive Metastore Security
Ranger provides centralized authorization policies for Hadoop resources. A new Ranger Hive Metastore security agent was introduced to address gaps in authorizing Hive CLI and synchronizing policies with object changes. It enforces authorization for Hive CLI, synchronizes access control lists when objects are altered via DDL in HiveServer2, and provides consistent authorization between Hive and HDFS resources. The agent has been implemented through custom classes extending Hive authorization hooks. A demo showed the new capabilities working with Ranger, Hive, and Hadoop.
Delta from a Data Engineer's Perspective
This document describes the Delta architecture, which unifies batch and streaming data processing. Delta achieves this through a continuous data flow model using structured streaming. It allows data engineers to read consistent data while being written, incrementally read large tables at scale, rollback in case of errors, replay and process historical data along with new data, and handle late arriving data without delays. Delta uses transaction logging, optimistic concurrency, and Spark to scale metadata handling for large tables. This provides a simplified solution to common challenges data engineers face.

Cluster computing frameworks such as Hadoop or Spark are tremendously beneficial in processing and deriving insights from data. However, long query latencies make these frameworks sub-optimal choices to power interactive applications. Organizations frequently rely on dedicated query layers, such as relational databases and key/value stores, for faster query latencies, but these technologies suffer many drawbacks for analytic use cases. In this session, we discuss using Druid for analytics and why the architecture is well suited to power analytic applications.
User-facing applications are replacing traditional reporting interfaces as the preferred means for organizations to derive value from their datasets. In order to provide an interactive user experience, user interactions with analytic applications must complete in an order of milliseconds. To meet these needs, organizations often struggle with selecting a proper serving layer. Many serving layers are selected because of their general popularity without understanding the possible architecture limitations.
Druid is an analytics data store designed for analytic (OLAP) queries on event data. It draws inspiration from Google’s Dremel, Google’s PowerDrill, and search infrastructure. Many enterprises are switching to Druid for analytics, and we will cover why the technology is a good fit for its intended use cases.

It tracks the data change log -binlog- of a relational database [OLTP], and replay these change log timely to an external storage to do Real-Time OLAP, such as delta/kudu. To implement a robust CDC streaming pipeline, lots of factors should be concerned, such as how to ensure data accuracy , how to process OLTP source schema changed, whether it is easy to build for variety databases with less code.

Both Spark and HBase are widely used, but how to use them together with high performance and simplicity is a very hard topic. Spark HBase Connector (SHC) provides feature-rich and efficient access to HBase through Spark SQL. It bridges the gap between the simple HBase key value store and complex relational SQL queries, and enables users to perform complex data analytics on top of HBase using Spark.
SHC implements the standard Spark data source APIs, and leverages the Spark catalyst engine for query optimization. To achieve high performance, SHC constructs the RDD from scratch instead of using the standard HadoopRDD. With the customized RDD, all critical techniques can be applied and fully implemented, such as partition pruning, column pruning, predicate pushdown and data locality. The design makes the maintenance very easy, while achieving a good tradeoff between performance and simplicity. Also, SHC has integrated natively with Phoenix data types. With SHC, Spark can execute batch jobs to read/write data from/into Phoenix tables. Phoenix can also read/write data from/into HBase tables created by SHC. For example, users can run a complex SQL query on top of an HBase table created by Phoenix inside Spark, perform a table join against a DataFrame which reads the data from a Hive table, or integrate with Spark Streaming to implement a more complicated system.
This session will demonstrate how SHC works, how to use SHC in secure/non-secure clusters, how SHC works with multi-HBase clusters and how Spark reads/writes data from/into Phoenix tables with SHC, etc. It will also benefit people who use Spark and other data sources (besides HBase) as it inspires them with ideas of how to support high performance data source access at the Spark DataFrame level.

This document discusses different types of slowly changing dimensions in a data warehouse: Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3. Type 1 dimensions involve corrections to existing data. Type 2 dimensions track true changes over time by adding new rows. Type 3 dimensions store both old and new attribute values in the same row. Change Data Capture (CDC) - Most RDBMS vendors have a version of it, and most data warehouse professionals have built it in one form or another. This presentation will define CDC and its close relative changed data capture. It explains how the reasons for CDC and the destinations for the captured changes drive how to best capture change data. Different pitfalls associated with processing of change data into the respective destinations are exposed. Attendees will know when to use which CDC method, how to process the captured changes into their destinations, and be able to provide a clear rationale for their choice.
Intro to Delta Lake
Delta Lake brings reliability, performance, and security to data lakes. It provides ACID transactions, schema enforcement, and unified handling of batch and streaming data to make data lakes more reliable. Delta Lake also features lightning fast query performance through its optimized Delta Engine. It enables security and compliance at scale through access controls and versioning of data. Delta Lake further offers an open approach and avoids vendor lock-in by using open formats like Parquet that can integrate with various ecosystems.

Spark HBase Connector: Feature Rich and Efficient Access to HBase Through Spa...
Both Spark and HBase are widely used, but how to use them together with high performance and simplicity is a very hard topic. Spark HBase Connector (SHC) provides feature-rich and efficient access to HBase through Spark SQL. It bridges the gap between the simple HBase key value store and complex relational SQL queries, and enables users to perform complex data analytics on top of HBase using Spark.
SHC implements the standard Spark data source APIs, and leverages the Spark catalyst engine for query optimization. To achieve high performance, SHC constructs the RDD from scratch instead of using the standard HadoopRDD. With the customized RDD, all critical techniques can be applied and fully implemented, such as partition pruning, column pruning, predicate pushdown and data locality. The design makes the maintenance very easy, while achieving a good tradeoff between performance and simplicity. Also, SHC has integrated natively with Phoenix data types. With SHC, Spark can execute batch jobs to read/write data from/into Phoenix tables. Phoenix can also read/write data from/into HBase tables created by SHC. For example, users can run a complex SQL query on top of an HBase table created by Phoenix inside Spark, perform a table join against a DataFrame which reads the data from a Hive table, or integrate with Spark Streaming to implement a more complicated system.
This session will demonstrate how SHC works, how to use SHC in secure/non-secure clusters, how SHC works with multi-HBase clusters and how Spark reads/writes data from/into Phoenix tables with SHC, etc. It will also benefit people who use Spark and other data sources (besides HBase) as it inspires them with ideas of how to support high performance data source access at the Spark DataFrame level.

In normal situations, the default Kafka consumer and producer configuration options work well. But we all know life is not all roses and rainbows and in this session we’ll explore a few knobs that can save the day in atypical scenarios. First, we'll take a detailed look at the parameters available when reading from Kafka. We’ll inspect the params helping us to spot quickly an application lock or crash, the ones that can significantly improve the performance and the ones to touch with gloves since they could cause more harm than benefit. Moreover we’ll explore the partitioning options and discuss when diverging from the default strategy is needed. Next, we’ll discuss the Kafka Sink. After browsing the available options we'll then dive deep into understanding how to approach use cases like sinking enormous records, managing spikes, and handling small but frequent updates.. Slowly changing dimension
This document discusses different types of slowly changing dimensions in a data warehouse: Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3. Type 1 dimensions involve corrections to existing data. Type 2 dimensions track true changes over time by adding new rows. Type 3 dimensions store both old and new attribute values in the same row. Change Data Capture (CDC) - Most RDBMS vendors have a version of it, and most data warehouse professionals have built it in one form or another. This presentation will define CDC and its close relative changed data capture. It explains how the reasons for CDC and the destinations for the captured changes drive how to best capture change data. Different pitfalls associated with processing of change data into the respective destinations are exposed. Attendees will know when to use which CDC method, how to process the captured changes into their destinations, and be able to provide a clear rationale for their choice.

Delta Lake brings reliability, performance, and security to data lakes. It provides ACID transactions, schema enforcement, and unified handling of batch and streaming data to make data lakes more reliable. Delta Lake also features lightning fast query performance through its optimized Delta Engine. It enables security and compliance at scale through access controls and versioning of data. Delta Lake further offers an open approach and avoids vendor lock-in by using open formats like Parquet that can integrate with various ecosystems.

De integratie van GIS en Relatics bij Combinatie Herepoort
Combinatie Herepoort is de aannemerscombinatie die de ombouw van de zuidelijke ringweg van de stad Groningen uitvoert. Hierin werken twee Duitse en vier noordelijke bedrijven samen. Het project draait om het vernieuwen en uitbreiden van 12 kilometer rijksweg, met de bijbehorende aanpassingen aan het onderliggend wegennet erbij. Hoogtepunten zijn het stoplichtvrij maken van het Julianaplein en het aanleggen van een verdiepte ligging met een park op het dak.
Risicomanagement op projecten vanuit template omgeving public
Mobilis maakt al jaren gebruik van Relatics en past op alle projecten een Relatics-omgeving met de naam Mobilizer toe als projectbeheerstool. Mobilizer is ontwikkeld om de steeds groter wordende hoeveelheid informatie en complexer wordende projecten en processen goed te kunnen blijven beheersen. In de presentatie wordt ingegaan op de wijze waarop Mobilis risicomanagement effectief toepast met behulp van Relatics-tooling vanuit een template-omgeving.
Risicobeheersing bij assetmanagement 1.2
Infraspeed Maintenance BV (IMBV) is de assetmanagement organisatie verantwoordelijk voor het onderhoud van het spoor en de bovenleidingsystemen van de HSL-Zuid (Hogesnelheidslijn Zuid), gedurende een periode van 25 jaar. Tijdens deze interactieve presentatie wordt er dieper ingegaan op het proces van risicobeheersing bij assetmanagement door Infraspeed.
Ontwikkeling risicomanagement bij grote infra-projecten
Het project “Wegverbreding Hogering” in Almere wordt gerealiseerd om de nieuw te ontwikkelen wijk Almere Pampus te ontsluiten. Gezien de risico’s van zo’n project is gezocht naar een systeem ter ondersteuning van het risicomanagement.
Vroeger werden de risico’s bijgehouden in Excel. Inmiddels is overgestapt naar Relatics en is een risicomodule ingericht, passend bij het project. De registratie is vereenvoudigd, de foutkans gereduceerd en het overzicht verbeterd.
Risicomanagement en Relatics bij multidisciplinaire contracten
Bij BAM Infra werken we sinds de oprichting van Relatics samen om tot een ultieme project-beheersingstool te komen. Ook in de huidige tijd vindt een constante ontwikkeling van de tool plaats om in de projecten de processen beter te ondersteunen en data effectief te gebruiken in de sturing.
In de Relatics-projectomgeving van BAM Infra zitten veel modules die BAM Infra medewerkers helpen hun projecten beter te beheersen. Uiteenlopend van modules voor eisen-analyses, strategisch omgevingsmanagement, audits tot bijvoorbeeld de risicomodule. In de laatstgenoemde vindt niet alleen registratie van actuele risico’s plaats, het biedt tevens de mogelijkheid om doorsnedes te maken die het project beter beheersbaar maken. Dit met een lagere impact van risico’s op de projecten als gevolg. Verder biedt de risicomodule mogelijkheid om de actuele stand van zaken wat betreft top-risicolijsten en financiële impact van projectrisico’s te rapporteren.
Relatics biedt de mogelijkheid om projectrisico’s integraal te beschouwen door het leggen van diverse relaties met andere projectinformatie. Het uiteindelijke doel is niet alleen het vastleggen van risico-informatie op individuele projecten, maar ook om verder te kijken naar de toekomst door te leren van onze projecten.
