Vitiligo is a condition that affects skin pigmentation and results in loss of normal skin color through the destruction of melanocytes. It affects people of all races and around 1/3 of patients have a family history of vitiligo. The average age of onset is 20 years. While the specific causes are unknown, vitiligo is thought to be an autoimmune condition. Symptoms include patches of lighter skin on areas such as the face, hands and feet that are usually not itchy or scaly.
