The Vikings primarily subsisted on a diet of meat and fish obtained through hunting and fishing, which they would preserve through smoking, drying, and salting to last through the winter months. They supplemented their protein with bread made from grains like rye, wheat and barley, as well as vegetables grown locally and wild berries. While they drank beer brewed from barley and mead, their staple beverage was water. They used simple tools like clay bowls, wooden spoons, knives and drinking horns during food preparation and consumption.
