Video Games Essay
Writing an essay on the topic of video games can be a challenging endeavor, requiring a delicate
balance between exploring the multifaceted nature of the subject and presenting a cohesive and
insightful argument. The difficulty lies in navigating the diverse aspects of video games, from
their cultural impact and psychological effects to their technological evolution and the
controversies surrounding them.
One of the challenges is to avoid the pitfalls of oversimplification or stereotyping, recognizing
that video games encompass a wide array of genres, themes, and player experiences. Striking the
right tone is crucial, as the essay needs to engage both avid gamers and those less familiar with
the gaming world. Achieving a nuanced perspective is essential, acknowledging both the positive
and negative aspects of video games without succumbing to biased viewpoints.
Additionally, staying current with the rapidly evolving landscape of video games poses a
challenge. The industry is dynamic, with new releases, technological advancements, and cultural
shifts occurring regularly. Keeping abreast of these changes ensures that the essay remains
relevant and reflects the contemporary state of video gaming.
Researching the topic thoroughly is vital, delving into scholarly articles, industry reports, and
diverse perspectives to provide a well-rounded analysis. Integrating this information seamlessly
into the essay while maintaining a coherent and logical flow is no small feat. Furthermore,
articulating personal opinions and insights in a way that resonates with the audience adds
another layer of complexity.
In conclusion, crafting an essay on the topic of video games demands a thoughtful approach, a
deep understanding of the subject matter, and the ability to navigate through various dimensions
without losing focus. The challenge lies in presenting a comprehensive and balanced perspective
that captures the complexity of video games while maintaining clarity and engaging the reader.

Puritan Ideology In Early America
Puritan ideology had a profound effect upon early America. Though they came to the
New World mainly for religious freedom after attempting to purify the Church of
England, they left an impact beyond just the spiritual as many men of the Puritan
faith helped shape the young country. This obviously led to the Puritans having a
dramatic effect on the literature The whole life of a Puritan was dedicated to God,
as He was the only one who could offer salvation from eternal damnation. They
believed that humans are sinners incapable of earning God s merit on their own,
and for that reason they observed strict moral codes in order to ensure that they may
receive God s grace. This central idea, God s long withstanding mercy, a central idea
reflected in many of the early writings of America... Show more content on

One of his sermons, A Model of Christian Charity espouses central Puritan ideals.
As stated before the Puritans believed in a strict moral code in order to gain God s
grace. One means of living up to this code was helping those who were less
fortunate. Winthrop not only recommended charity towards others but stated it was
a Christian duty saying, When there is no other means by whereby our Christian
brother may be relieved in his distress, we must help him beyond our ability (208).
In other words, he believed that as Christians the people should go through drastic
measures in order to help his common man. This lends itself to Puritan ideals, as he
personally believed this was a way of completing one s covenant with God and later
suggested that if all Christians can strive to practice the morals expressed in the Bible
that they could perhaps create a utopian community as a safe haven for all including
the Native Americans. This in particular was important at the time as the writings of
Winthrop can perhaps be attributed to improving relationships between the colonist
and their neighbors in the new
Hardness And What Impact Does It Have On Water Quality
1. What is hardness and what impact does it have on water quality?
Hardness is the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in the water. Hardness
impacts on water quality throughout the aesthetic acceptability by consumers
(meaning the concentration of the calcium and magnesium and other dissolved solids
are measureable by the consumers). In addition to, economic and operational
considerations (which is controllable throughout the treatment or blending in public
drinking water), hard water tends to leave scale deposition in the water distribution
system, as well as in heated water applications. (Hardness in Drinking water, 2011).
2. What water quality standards are associated with water hardness?
There is no Primary or Secondary standard for water hardness by EPA. Also hardness
has no health risk. As the hardness of water is classified: 0 to 60 mg/ as calcium
carbonate is classified as soft; 61 to 120 mg/L as moderately hard; 121 to 180 mg/L
as hard; and more than 180 mg/L as very hard. (Water quality criteria. (n.d.).
3. Briefly describe your understanding about pH and why is pH important in water
treatment. Give two examples. pH is a measure of the hydrogen ion activity in the
water and is determined by the relative number of the hydrogen ions for acidity and
hydroxide ion for alkalinity, thus mathematically expressed as pH= log [H+] where
[H+] is the hydrogen ion activity . pH values are calculated in powers of 10.Thus, the
hydrogen ion concentration of a solution
Manuel Noriega Panama
In Panama, Manuel Noriega the future dictator was under the mentorship of
Torrijos Herrera, Panama s unofficial leader. When the grim reaper would come to
claim Herrera, Noriega would gain control of Herrera s leadership role, and in
1981, when Herrera was aboard a plane that crashed into the mountains, Noriega
did just that . In order for complete control of Panama, he needed the power of the
Panama Defense Force (PDF) at his will, and because of his desire for ultimate
power he convinced Ruben Dario Paredes to resign from the leadership position of
the PDF. During his complete control of Panama, he was situated as an ally of the
United Statesgovernment because he supplied information to organizations, such as
the CIA, DEA, and the Army.
The Discovery Of North America
The discovery of North America sparked a new era of exploration, expansion, and
colonization. Many European countries took the opportunity to develop a new
territory where they could prosper financially and benefit their home country as much
as possible. The trip overseas was strenuous, as was maintaining positive relationships
with Native Americans and running a successful colony. Although all European
countries who showed interest in establishing territories in the Americashad their own
reasons for doing so, some countries did a better job executing their colonizing than
others. Britain, France, and Spain were the three most successful countries in terms
of colonizing a new land for their country.
The Spanish were amongst the best explorers at the time, establishing settlements in
Hispaniola and Mexico. They were looking for wealth, power, and to expand their
territory. An explorer named Hernan Cortes invaded the massive Native empire of the
Aztecs, which was far richer and larger than any town in Spain. When invited into the
city, Cortes sought to conquer, enslave and steal from the wealthy city. By forming
many alliances with Native tribes who hated the Aztecs, the Spanish overtook the
city, showing no mercy towards their enemies. They enslaved those they didn t kill,
and disassembled some of the former Aztec pyramids into Christian Cathedrals.
Cortes was eventually named governor of Mexico after his victory. The Spanish had
more urban establishments in the Americas
Types Of Mainstream School Schools Essay
There are four types of mainstream school that have to adhere to the national
curriculum are funded by the LEA (Local Education Authority). These are:
Community schools. Are run by the local authority, which employs the staff and
owns the building and/ or the land and also decide on the admission criteria. They
promote strong links with the local community and may use the school facilities
for local groups such as adult education or childcare classes. Foundation/ Trust
schools. Are run by the governing body, who decide on the school admission
policy with the local education authority. The school, buildings and the land will be
owned by the governing body or a charitable foundation. A trust school which is
kind of like a foundation school, which will form a charitable trust with an outside
business, although the school will have to provide any additional support services
which the school may require. It is up to the governing body and parents on whether
the school becomes a trust school or not. Voluntary schools. There are two types of
voluntary schools, voluntary aided and voluntary controlled. Voluntary aided schools
are mainly religious or faith schools, although anyone can apply for a place their no
matter what their background is. As with a foundation school, the governing body
employs the staff and sets the admission criteria. They are funded partly by the
governing body, partly by a charity and partly by the Local Education Authority. The
governing body helps

Case SynopsisThis case describes how Land Rover North America, Inc. (LRNA)
has redesigned their dealerships and selling process with the objective of building
and enhancing equity for its brand. Land Rover is a niche player in a very crowded
and rapidly maturing product category. Competition is fierce and is dominated by
large global competitors with extensive dealer networks who differentiate their
products largely by size, features, and price. The company has relatively few
dealerships and cannot afford the volume of advertising or promotion that its primary
competitors can. The company must choose to depend upon positioning its product
as a specialty brand, characterized by brand insistence on the part of its buyers.

We would also advocate Love of Product seminars for staff and retail partners
because we think individuals who believe in the product sell it best.
Lastly, LRNA must determine if it should continue its use of a dealer network or
convert these franchises into freestanding, exclusive retail outlets called Land Rover
Centres. Though development of Land Rover Centre s across the nation seems
like a risky move, especially in the face of declining luxury car sales and dealership
consolidation, we wholeheartedly support it. Part of the lure of the Land Rover
aura is the willingness to tread new territory, take risk and be revolutionary in
leadership style. Land Rover Centre s will do just that. Land Rover Centre s will
increase consumer exposure to the Land Rover family of vehicles and the Land
Rover way of life in a friendly, stress free environment. We want consumers to not
only drive Land Rover vehicles, but to live the Land Rover lifestyle. We want Land
Rover vehicles to expose consumers to the wealth of new experiences they are
seeking. Centre development costs are high, but we believe the payoff will exceed
costs.

Examples Of Dramatic Irony In The Open Window
In the story The Open Window by Saki (H. H. Munro) there are multiple instances of
irony. This irony provides for a very comical and hilarious satire. In numerous
occasions, the reader will encounter situational, verbal, and even dramatic irony.
Dramatic irony is an instance of irony in which the reader knows what is going to
happen; however, the character in the story does not. Situational ironyis an instance of
irony in which the character in the story does something to expect a certain outcome;
but, the exact opposite happens. Lastly, verbal irony is an instance of irony in which
the character in the story says something, but means something other than its literal
meaning. Starting from the beginning of the list, dramatic irony is very

audience what are the character talking about. This movie started in United State
around World war 2 and before japanese attack.
The movie start when Rafe and Danny are still a kid, and they grow up together.
Rafe and Danny both live in a farm.
After they grow up; they joined the Army Air Corps. Later Rafe falls in love with a

you see Japanese talking is when they are planning on how they attack US. There
aren t much on what they think. By watching this film, you can learn what soldiers
and people look like in World War 2. Soldiers feared they won t come back to see
their wife, girlfriend, family, and friends . If this movie have been different period
of time, it still will look the same. War have not change much. People are still dying
in war, and many won t come back alive. There are a plot when a african american

This movie won a lot of awards, and I think the sound effect and the story line are
great. One thing I don t like about this movie is because it is too long. This movie
is over 3 hours long. You won t see anything about Pearl Harbor until one hour after
you start the movie. The Writer for this movie added a long romantic story scene into
it, but this movie did show what happen on Pearl
Tracing Narrative Threads in Life of Pi Essay examples
Tracing Narrative Threads 1) Father s admonitions to stay away from the tiger in the
zoo.
During this part of the novel, Pi s father is teaching him a lesson by letting a tiger
brutally kill a goat right in front of him. He is trying to teach Pi to not go near an
animal such as tigers because they are incredibly dangerous. I believe this thread
represents the foreshadowing of what is to come for Pi.
When Pi and Ravi s father was telling them about staying away from tigers he said
Tigers are very dangerous. I want you to understand that you are never under any
circumstances to touch a tiger, to pet a tiger, to put your hands through the bars of a
cage, even to get close to a cage. Is that clear? (37) This evidence indicates that ...

The name Pi is also symbolic because as Pi stated: I was named after a swimming
pool (8) The word Piscine in French translate to swimming pool in English. The
significance of his name is because he spends 227 days in a huge swimming pool
(the ocean) fighting for his life.
The thread develops during the novel because as the novel goes on and he s stuck
on the lifeboat, Pi starts to question who Pi really is. When he starts questioning
who he is, he finds it hard to learn who he truly wants to be. The message the author
is trying to get across is be true to yourself. 3) Young Pi s dedication to three religions
As explained in the book, Pi follows three different religions; Hinduism, Islam, and
Christianity. Pi is extremely interested in all three religions and tries to find himself
through religion. Although, he does not understand why he can t follow all three
religions. But he can t be a Hindu, a Christian and a Muslim. It s impossible. He
must choose. (76) This thread represents that he dedicates himself to the things he
believes in and will fight for what he believes in. Even when his family disagreed
with his decision of following all three religions, he still fought for what he believed.
This thread develops during the novel because while he is on the lifeboat Pi starts
questioning who truly he is and wants to be. The young boy who was once dedicated
to vegetarianism, which was rooted in his religion, must make a life changing
decision.
Reasons for the Gap between Social Classes in America
USA is a very big country with a lot of people and the social classes are very
important. We can see that social class plays big part of people s life. Everyday
people are working, studying, trying to be better. Even though right now it s time
when everyone has many opportunities in his life, anyway there is a gap between
classes and groups of people with same features. And your background probably
will build your future. And we need to find what kind of class we have right now
and look into these classes. The main idea is that Social Classesstill exist and it s
most general part of U.S.A society. There are three reasons why gap between
groups still exist. The first reason is that everyone has different economic status.
People divide by groups with same ideas, religion, economic status, political views,
and cultural features. For example in U.S.A we have poor people, very rich
people, and kind of middle people and we can t say that these families are same.
People from each group have different opportunities in education, medicine, and
job. If you are from rich family you have more chance to be succeed in this world,
for you it will be much easier unlike someone from poor family. The children from
rich families will get best college or university degree, will find good job, and will
learn how to be rich from their parents. Money for now is very powerful tool in your
hand, with money we can go to our dreams. The statistic shows us that most of

8 Year Old Research Paper
When a child turns eight years old most likely they are starting to develop skills
including being able to speak fluently, also writing and reading at a higher level. At
this age, children are able to write and create simple stories as well as compositions.
They are also becoming more creative when playing, and more socially involved
with other kids. Eight years are continuing to develop more socially, psychologically,
and physically.
By this age, eight year olds enjoy being around their friends, and making new
friends as well. The opinions of their friends also play a very important role in their
lives, and peer pressure may start to occur, because they want to fit in and have the
approval from their friends. Emotions in eight year olds, also change rapidly and
often, angry outbursts are also common. They require immediate gratification, and
have very little patients when it comes to things they want, or think that they need.
Eight year olds start to also be more expressive with what they want, for example
through speaking writing and reading.

sports and want to participate or get involved. Some sports, that eight year olds may

Milton Friedman Summary
American Economists, Milton Friedman stated in his famous 1970 New York Times
Magazine article, the manager is the agent of the individuals who own the corporation
, he continues with writing about how the manager s primary responsibility is to
conduct the business in accordance with [the owner s] desires . While at this time,
this assumption was greatly appreciated considered, many economists have to come
to the realization that there are a lot of flaws associated with this view. It has since
then been developed and critiqued. In this essay, it is my intention to discuss the
implications and problems that came along with Friedman s opinion. Touching upon
theories such as the principal agenttheory to solidify the limitations of this view in
practice. I will also discuss the relationship between a shareholder centered
perspective and value transfer and value creation. First, we must understand what
Friedman s view is on corporate social responsibility. What are the social
responsibilities that a corporationmust follow? Friedman discussed in his article that
it is the corporation s responsibility to make as much money as possible for the
stockholder. This statement made by him made me wonder about safety for the
workers, excessive pollution, and how situations are handled in less developed
countries and child labor laws. I think that Friedman was not aware how this
statement would be interpreted, especially in an inappropriate way. He was probably
looking at the short
How Did Macbeth Kill Duncan
Et tu, Brute, Just like Caesar, King Duncan met their demise from the blade of a
trusted friend s sword (Julius Caesar, 3.1.77). Macbeth s role in the murder of King
Duncan is among the most menacing of crimes. Although Macbeth commits the
murder, his wife instigates the entire plan. Lady Macbeth forced Macbethinto
murdering the King which puts Macbeth in a delusional state where he questions his
actions. The premeditated murder of King Duncanin Shakespeare s play Macbeth
can be blamed on one person only, Lady Macbeth. Even though the blood is on
Macbeth s hands, literally, the plan was not set in motion until Lady Macbeth
organized the slaughter. Macbeth fully shows his belief in the concept of Happy

The Trope Of The Sphere
Interestingly, it is via Borges, a well known master in the creation of literary
labyrinths, that we are able to find several possible explanations for these inner
circularities, for instance, through his recurrent references to the trope of the
sphere. Take some of the short fictions that constitute his 1941 volume The Garden
of Forking Paths, namely Lottery in Babylon and The Library of Babel . Not only
does Borges tell us that the Babylonians obey the dictates of chance, surrender their
lives, their hopes, their nameless terror to it, but it never occurs to them to delve
into its labyrinthine laws or the revolving spheres that manifest its workings
(Borges 1998: 104; emphasis added), but also his Library of Babel is a sphere
whose exact center is any hexagon and whose circumference is unattainable (113).
Moreover, the trope of the sphere whose center is everywhere and its
circumference nowhere would be later analysed by Borges in an essay titled Pascal
s Sphere [1951]. In it, the significance of the sphere as a double paradox of time
/infinity and of unity/multiplicity becomes clearer, by means of a line that he draws
from Xenophanes of Colophon to Pascal in order to... Show more content on

Not only the tetrahedron proves to be circular due to the geographical positions of
the murders, but also the implied notion of rebirth that is given in the imminence of
the main character s death already denotes the idea of circularity (Borges 1998: 156).
Notwithstanding, in the same text there is also evidence of an acquaintance with the
pre Socratic coincidentia oppositorum, by means of which a straight line is
potentially no different from a circular line (plus, a formulation that is also
reminiscent of Zeno s Paradoxes of
Life Of Pi Analysis Essay
Life of Pi Film Analysis Survival is an instinct. Often times, in order to survive,
people must shed a part of their innocence. For some, it may be subtle, taken in tiny
bites along the way, and for others it could be in one traumatizing moment. Ang Lee,
director of The Life of Pi, explores this theme throughout his film. Lee shows the
viewer this loss in the use of imagery, lighting, and color. He takes the viewer on a
journey through the eyes of Piscine Patel as his innocence and humanity slowly get
chipped away and he is forced to do what is necessary to survive and the lengths he
goes to to regain that lost innocence. The imagery of the water and its purity, or
reflectivity, foreshadows events throughout the film. When innocent... Show more

Lee uses low key lighting during Appa s lesson about Richard Parker. Pi, being the
kind and innocent child that he is, automatically thinks the best of everyone and

hand feed the bengal tiger. When Appa catches him, he gets yelled at, and Pi tells
his father Animals have souls too. I have seen it in their eyes. Appa is set on
teaching him that an animal s only thought is survival. The scene dims as a zoo

the storm that takes the life of Pi s family. Lee uses red flashes of light to emphasise
the horror of the sinking ship. As Pi clings to the liferaft that falls into the ocean
when a terrified zebra leaps to safety and breaks its leg. In this scene, Richard
Parker then climbs on the raft. Out of instinct, Pi jumps off and into the choppy
waters. While underwater, Pi sees the blue glow of the ship sinking to the bottom of
the ocean, leaving the viewer with a sense of the heartache Pi must feel. Ang Lee
uses low key lighting and little contrast again when Pi must discuss the events of the
shipwreck with the interviewers. The vivid colors and lighting effects fade away as
he walks the interviewers through the identity of the zebra, the hyena,
Geology Of Mercury Essay
Mercury The geology of Mercury is similar to the geology of the Moon; although,
Mercury is a much denser planet with a larger liquid iron core. The surface of
Mercury is covered by impact craters and lava plains.
It s believed that the surface of Mercury is geologically inactive; although, only 55%
of the surface has been mapped in enough detail to see its geology.
Some of the largest craters in this period were filled with lava from Mercury s
interior. It s believed that vulcanism on Mercury ended during its first 700 800

The plates act like a hard and rigid shell compared to Earth s mantle. This strong outer
layer is called the lithosphere.
Four types of plate boundaries exist: Transform bounderies occur where two
lithospheric plates slide; Divergent bounderies occur where two plates slide apart

The lithosphere, which is the rigid outermost shell of a planet (on Earth, the crust and

The movie that I chose to analyze for this section is Blade Runner. This movie
takes place in Los Angeles in the year 2019. It is based on a futuristic situation
where a company has created an advance synthetic human form referred to as
replicants. The replicants look identical to regular humans, however they are faster,
stronger, and more agile. Their intelligence is equal to if not more superior to
humans. The replicants were sent to the off world and used to further space
exploration and used as slaves. When a revolt of the replicants took place it was

human, he is surprised. The mastermind indicates that she is beginning to suspect her

The humans in the movie seem to have a very aristocentric point of view. They use
the replicants and other forms of genetic engineering to further themselves. Although
the replicants bleed when shot, have feelings, including the abilities to love, the
humans still view them as mere experimental specimens. The replicants are actually
equal to if not superior to the humans, yet the humans still see themselves as being

When confronted regarding his mother, Lloyd (one of the escaped replicants)

as a child. The replicants have a very
How Managers Understand And Manage The Work Family
Balance...
The aim of this study is to investigate how managers understand and manage the
work family balance practices (WFBPs) and how undertaking these new practices
impact their dual level position (i.e. organisation and individual level) in the
organisation. To achieve this aim, this study will first explore the work family
relationship that has been broadly and conceptually defined by previous scholars
and different conceptual definitions were taken into account. The term used in this
study is Work Family Balance Practices (WFBPs) that will be used to refer to the
human resource practices and policies establish by organizations. Namely, these
available practices are able to implement amongst workers in the workplace.
Although the work life and family life are different, yet they are interconnected
(Clark, 2000). Thus, this study views various perspectives when conceptualizing the
work, family and work family balance following on from the earlier discussion.
This chapter is divided into seven sections. It starts with the definition of term Work
Family Balance Practices (WFBPs). It then looks at how this term has been
alternated and used in different ways. After this brief introduction, the second
section will briefly discuss the origin of work and family from a conceptual
background of the work family area related. The third section will continue to discuss
the understanding of terms of work and family from the conceptual background of
work and family area. The fourth section
The Call Comparison
How likely is it in this day and age that teenage girls get captured and tortured?
News today seems to be filled with these types of horrors. In Taken, a 2008 a crime
fiction starring Liam Neeson, two friends are kidnapped to be used as sex slaves.
In The Call, a young girl is taken from a parking garage, taken to an underground
hideout, and scalped for her blonde hair. The 2013 thriller stars Halle Berry and
Abigail Breslin as the main characters of the movie. The Call uses more horror
elements than Taken and keeps audiences on the edge of their seats, and that is why
it is the better movie. Although the plots of The Call and Taken are unique in some
ways, they are also very similar. To begin The Call, Casey Welson, a young teenage

The Call consists of the main rescuer, Jordan Turner, a teenage girl being

main hero, Bryan Mills, a helpless teenager, Kim Mills, and several unnamed
kidnappers. Both main characters have the same mentality of never giving up.
The two kidnapped girls of course are both panic stricken and in fear of their death.
The kidnappers have one reason for taking the teenage girls. So, the characters
mainly have the same personalities and goals. The difference between the two main
characters is that Jordyn in The Call is a complete stranger to Casey, yet she still
continues to search for her. Bryan on the other hand is the father of the Kim, the girl
he is trying to rescue. Even though both The Call and Taken are both thrilling
movies, Taken is lacking in several categories that The Call contains. The plot of The
Call keeps the audience guessing and eager for what happens next. The main character
in The Call had no prior relationship to the kidnapped teenager, which makes
viewers wonder why the hero never gave up. The theme of The Call shows how and
why revenge is sweet. If given the choice between the two movies, always pick The
Impact Of Jean-Jacques Rousseau s Discourses On The
Arts...
Written in 1750, Jean Jacques Rousseau Discourses on the Arts and Sciences is his
analysis on how scholarly pursuits have affected the development of civil society
throughout history. Rousseau argues that the arts and sciences have hurt the
growth of society, leading people to develop negative attributes. To fully
understand the arguments of Rousseau, it is important to look at his past to see
how events in his life have affected his philosophy. Rousseau was originally from
Geneva, Switzerland, and moved to Paris as a young adult. This had a dramatic
effect on his outlook on life. Geneva was a relatively egalitarian and virtuous
society, and Rousseau perceived Paris as a harsh juxtaposition to those ideals. He
found people to be very focused
Dramatic Functions of Inspector Goole in An Inspector...
Dramatic Functions of Inspector Goole in An Inspector Calls by J.B. Priestley
In the play An Inspector Calls, a message is being portrayed to the reader by J. B
Priestley and in my opinion, the main bearer of this message is the inspector. Being
of an ambiguous nature, he appears to live in a different world to the family with
whom he deals; the Birlings and it is his dramatic function in the play that I shall be
analysing.
Firstly, we have the Stage Instructions to consider. Throughout the play, there is no
mention of Inspector Goole s physical appearance except in the first set of stage
instructions when he enters the Birlings house. He is said to need not be a big man

Gerald asks to see the picture the inspector says, hold on, your time will come and
one line of inquiry at a time This shows he has already planned out whom he will
speak to first and last and what information he will have. Due to the fact he already
knows that each of them holds a key to Eva Smith s death, it is likely he could be a
time traveller travelling back in time to punish the Birlings and make them realize the
consequences of their actions.
The dialogue from the other characters also helps us to comprehend the role of
Inspector Goole in An Inspector Calls. I especially think this is achieved by Mrs.
Birlings views on Eva Smith towards the end of the play, she thinks of Miss Smith a
an impertinent child and apparently. was giving herself ridiculous airs… that
were simply absurd for a child in her position. This signifies that Mrs. Birling does
not think highly of the girl and bearing in mind the social and historical context of this
Music Industry Research Paper
Music Industry: Independent vs. Major Record Label
Music is at our fingertips. We can turn on a radio or select a song on a menu and it
chimes back at you the melody of the song you selected. A man named Scott de
Martinville of the 18th century was fascinated by the way photographs preserved
images, and he felt as if he could do the same with sound. The invention of the
phonograph was the beginning of the music industry. Musicians could now use a
machine to record their sounds and then publish and dis tribute records. With records
came record labels, the leaders of the music business. Then just like everything else
in a capitalist country it became all about the money, rather than the music. The
business aspect of music should be based off of independent artistry in opposed to
corporate wel fare.
Ludwig van Beethoven one of the most talented, prolific, and remembered
composers of all time was an independent artist. One has to wonder, how did
composers/musicians make their money 150 years before labels were established?
Beethoven used the same methods as an inde pendent artist would today. He would
do live performances on piano or composing a large or chestra. These performances
would bring profit while expanding popularity just like modernized artists. Beethoven
also found profit in selling his sheet music, patronage, and being an instructor. This
was the unintentional start of independent music, and it continued to be this way
until one man decided to industrialize the
The Importance Of Learning And Retaining Material Is...
Although I have had the opportunity to learn in a variety of setting, I believe that my
most efficient way of learning and retaining material is through the auditory, visual
and tactile learning experience.
As I reviewed my list of things I have learned I reflect on my time in nursing school.
Therefore, I will use nursing school to display my preferred styles of learning.
I have never had great study habits but always managed to earn good grades. In
grade school I would find it difficult to concentrate while reading a book. My study
habits included retyping hand written notes and creating flash cards. Unfortunately,
I would become bored by my efforts and resort to a cramming session. After
graduating from high school I attended a local community college to purse my
nursing degree. I quickly realized that my old study methods would not aid me in
my quest to become nurse. As part of my nursing curriculum I participated in an
eight hour class session which entailed two lectures section both totaling four hours
each. I was assigned an A.M. and P.M. instructor to cover my theory and practical
learning. During instruction time with the A.M. teacher she would sit in a tall high
back chair in front of the class with a large medical book. She would began her
lecture by reading the highlighted definition within the chapter. Majority of the
lecture time was spent flipping pages and reciting different passage from the medical
book. Often times I would find myself losing
Computer Information And Networking Career Paper
Computer Information and Networking is a large and growing field that provides
those with the appropriate skills and education a wide range of possible job
opportunities. The BYU Idaho catalog has the following to say about careers in
Computer Information Technologies: Careers in CIT are dynamic. New
challenges and opportunities await you every day. Working in a team, you will
interact cooperatively with the management, customers, clients, and other
information technology professionals to determine what the solution needs to do,
what it needs to look like, and how it should work. One day, you may be meeting
with customers and clients, the next designing software, and the next designing a
database. The next day you may be involved in designing a complex network to
allow your organization to communicate more effectively using the web, mobile
devices, and computers. The next day you may be setting up a clustered set of

career opportunities that might be available with the skills and education that I am
gaining at BYUI and especially from my CIT 240 networking class. The current
curriculum of courses I am taking at BYU Idaho are required as part of 2 certificate
programs in computer information technology (CIT programming emphasis and CIT

Going back to school at the Academy of Our Lady always leaves a pleasant feeling.
School here is like a home away from home, it s a place where everyone is happy,
comfortable and motivated. Going to a new place filled with older kids can be an
intimidating experience. This is why the incoming pre freshmen and freshmen have
big sisters. The big sisters are there to lead their little sisters in the salesian faith, to
help them with their transition into high schooland to be a friend throughout their
journey. Since this generation is all about technology and the next coolest gadget,
the Academy of Our Lady has given the students an opportunity to be able to work
with this new technology. Each student is given an iPad, which will be assigned to
them their whole high school career. These iPads have the latest programs
installed, such as iMovie, Pages, Keynote and Numbers. The iPads allow better
communication and real life skills. The Academy of Our Lady is an extremely
welcoming place. We owe this to our salesian founder, Don Bosco. Since Don Bosco

The United States Of America And Spain Essay
The late 1800s was a high tension and tumultuous time for both the United States of
America and Spain. Spanish Colonialism had long been receding from its once
powerful stronghold in the 16th and 17th centuries, and in the 1890s, the United
States would make certain to diminish the last of Spain s outlets. The precedent for
the American, superpower perspective of the late 1800s is in large part due to
President James Monroe s Doctrine establishing the United Statesas the sole entity of
social, political, and economic interest in the Western Hemisphere. The Monroe
Doctrine clearly spells out that any territorial advances (or in this case, any territorial
claims, whatsoever) would be recognized as an act of aggression and the U.S. would
act accordingly (hint, hint war). This document shaped the United States as the sole
enforcer of both commerce and democracy in the Western Hemisphere in the minds
of its constituents. Thusly, it is the least bit unusual to see President McKinley asking
to declare war against the Spanish in defense of his country s interest. President
William McKinleys Declaration of War is written to the Congress of the United
States as a plea to go to war in defense of American interests and the Cuban people.
The document was written in 1898, and its objective was simple: persuade Congress
to allow him to declare war. Although the document may shape William McKinley as
a strong proponent of the now called Spanish American War, he very much wished to
Arab Israeli Conflict Essays
The Arab Israeli conflict is a struggle between the Jewish state of Israel and the
Arabs of the Middle East concerning the area known as Palestine. The term
Palestine has been associated variously and sometimes controversially with this
small region. Both the geographic area designated by and the political status of the
name have changed over the course of some three millennia. The region, or a part
of it, is also known as the Holy Land and is held sacred among Jews, Christians, and
Muslims. In the twentieth century it has been the object of conflicting claims of
Jewish and Arab national movements, and the conflict has led to prolonged violence
and in several instances open warfare opposing Israels existence. These wars, which

Both movements aimed at uniting their peoples in a national homeland. They
were to converge and confront each other in Palestine where, it was initially
thought by some, they could each achieve their aspirations in an atmosphere of
mutual accommodation. The two movements, in fact, proved incompatible and
the majority of Arab suffering resulted. Beginning in the 1800 s, oppression of
Jews in Eastern Europe sparked a mass emigration of Jewish refugees. Some Jews
formed a movement called Zionism, which sought to make Palestine an
independent Jewish nation. The first Zionist Congress was held in Switzerland in
1897 and it issued the Basle programme on the colonization of Palestine and the
establishment of the World Zionist Organization (WZO). Then, in 1906, The
Zionist congress decided the Jewish homeland should be Palestine. The only
problem was that there already was a large Arab Palestinian population inhabiting
the area. For this reason, Zionism was used as a propagandist tool to rid Palestine
of the Arabs and to start a new nation for the Jews. A look at the fabric of Jewish
Zionists that emigrated to Israel exhibited the driving forces and it displayed how
massively the movement developed. For Russian Jews, it was the desire to escape
totalitarian oppression. Religious Jews went there hoping for the day of messianic
redemption. Still others, viewing developments on the world scene, were
Who Is Most Responsible For Pignati s Death
Who is most responsible? Everyone knows that in the book The Pigman, written by
Paul Zindel, Mr. Pignati was a very important person for John and Lorraine. After
his death, John and Lorraine were emotionally shaken and it helped them to

Was it Norton? Bobo? His wife s death, or even when Norton smashed his cherished

were when Bobo died, and when Norton shattered his precious pigs.
There was reason why John didn t invite Norton to the party at Mr.Pignati s house; he

Rogier Van der Weyden Essay
Rogier Van der Weyden was a Flemish painter of the mid 15th century. Rogier was
chiefly influenced by his first teacher, Robert Campin. Although details of his early
training are sketchy, it is generally accepted that he entered the workshop of Robert
Campin, the foremost painter in Tournai and dean of the paintersguild, in 1427 at the
age of 27 (http://www.belgium.be). Rogier remained in Campin s studio for five
years, becoming an independent master of the guild on August 1, 1432. Van der
Weyden was not permitted to sell his artwork while studying in Campin s shop.

earliest paintings, and so alike are the styles of these two masters that critics still do...

Campin was not the only source of inspiration in Rogier s art. Jan van Eyck, the great
painter from Bruges, also profoundly affected the developing artist, introducing
elegance and subtle visual refinements into the bolder, Campinesque components of
such early paintings by Rogier as St. Luke Painting the Virgin. It was in Bruges,
where Rogier may have resided between 1432 and 1435, that he became thoroughly
acquainted with van Eyck s style (http://humanitiesweb.org). The spiritual essence of
a scene was displayed with similar technical virtuosity by Van der Weyden. His
international renown was exceeded only by that of Hugo van der Goes, who united
van Eyck s naturalism with penetrating studies of humanity(Eyewitness Books,
Renaissance, 20.) Rogier may well have also been influenced by the writings of
Thomas a Kempis, the most popular theologian of the era, whose quot;practical
mysticism, quot; like Rogier s paintings, stressed empathetic response to episodes
from the lives of Mary, Christ, and the saints (http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth

Rogier did a great service to northern art. He saved much of the tradition of lucid
design that might otherwise have been lost under the impact of Jan van Eyck s
discoveries (The Story of Art, 276).
While on a pilgrimage to Italy in 1450, Rogier apparently tutored Italian

Heroin Drugs And Its Effects On The Lives Of Young

Heroin is making a comeback in the United States and is highly prevalent in
certain areas. The heroin epidemic is sweeping across the Midwest, and claiming
the lives of young white males. It is very different from the 1960 s use of heroin,
and is now typically used because of its low cost and previous opioid addictions to
other prescription drugs. Young white males in many different communities are
becoming hooked because of the careless use of pain pills prescribed or taking them
from parents medicine cabinets. The communities include rural towns, big cities, and
suburbs all across the country.
The rate of past year heroin use among non Hispanic whites increased 114.3% from
1.4 per 1,000 in 2002 2004 to 3.0 per 1,000 in 2011 2013 (CDC, 2015).
Furthermore, heroin abuse has more than doubled among young adults in the past
decade (CDC, 2015), and the problem of heroin use and addiction is becoming
rampant in areas where it was never a problem before. More and more, young white
males, are becoming the face of heroin abuse. According to the Centers for Disease

deaths nearly quadrupled, and more than 8,200 people died in 2013 (2015). All of
these shocking statistics beg the question, why? What is it about young white males
as a population that makes them so susceptible to becoming heroin addicts?

those concepts within his book which helped people in not only to grow and change
but, to become more effective in any aspect of human responsibility that anyone can

Is It Difficult To Prevent Genocides Essay
According to Daniel Goldhagen, genocides are constantly being underestimated,
which causes the never ending realities of the past repeating itself. From high
officials to ordinary citizens, people often overlook the pattern and causes of these
systematic killings. One of these includes the UN, which was created to prevent
another World War, and to protect the rights of sovereignty of member states. This
organization serves to solve international issues, but has failed and continues to fail to
prevent genocides. Even though this group signed in 1948 a UN document,
Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crimeof Genocide, which
punished and still punishes people guilty of genocide, not one life was ever saved
from that declaration. The reason is because most at first want to deny that these

If nations knew that there would be consequences to their calculations of profit from
the genocide, that would cause them to lean towards the right and not the wrong.
Taking away the benefits of any alliance or trade, to the ones that cause genocide
would intensify the seriousness of their atrocities. Together, every member of all
diplomatic nations, must have the right to intervene in military interventions. Solving
the issue before it happened would have been helpful when the Serbians manipulated
Bosnians by feeding the children cookies, and assuring them not to be afraid. The
United Nations should have not been deceived by these actions, nor abandoned
25,000 Bosnians gathering in a United Nations base, wanting protection. Not only did
the Unite Nations ignore this situation, but they claimed to not have any information
about the Rwandan genocide that cause the deaths of 800,000 individuals. Therefore,
we must hold our leaders accountable to their promises to alleviate the issues,
otherwise they should be denied not to hold that
Explain How Human Geography And Physical Geography
How human geography and physical geography overlap The influence of natural
environment of human activity are very huge. First of all, we have terrains. The
influence of terrains on rural tribes is very apparent. Rivers in plain area is less,
and the terrain is complete, open and flat. So the shape of the village assumes the
circular or irregular polygon and more concentrated. However, in river less area,
villages along the river or valley stretching and villages scattered and quite small.
Second , the water. Villages are generally close to the water. In the water supply
adequate areas, Village is concentrated and have large scale. In water supply scarce
areasпјЊthe village is fragmented and smaller. In dry and desertareas, village is
distributed in the area rich in oasis or groundwater.
The third one is climate. If area rich in precipitation, most of the roof are inclined.
This is in favour for the rain come down. And most of the plants are very good live
in the more water areas. So people usually use bamboo to build their house.
Because of the rain is very often, the ground and the air are very damply. So people

people usually use earth and rocks to build their house.

Mental Illness In Godwin s A Sorrowful Woman
In Godwin s story A Sorrowful Woman , the mother has a series of very complex
feelings and emotions. From the story, it can be inferred that this is a woman with
a sudden onset of mental illness, a woman who has lost her identity and sense of
belonging; and a woman who is consciously aware of all this, knowing she is a
burden to her loved ones.
This mother shows signs of her mental illness almost right off the bat, when, after
looking at her son, she began yelping without tears, retching in between (39). The
onset of this illness appears to be very sudden. The story begins with One winter
evening she looked at them....the sight of them made her so sad and sick she did
not want to see them ever again (39). It seems as if just one evening she suddenly
begins to feel this way. When the son says, It s alright Mommy (39), causing the
father to respond Mommy is sick (39), shows that the father did not have time to
explain this to the son any time before. There is no evidence given in the story as to
what caused her mental illness, though we can infer that the onset was quite sudden.
Throughout the story, the woman is never identified, only being referred to as the
woman (40). So we never have a sense of her identity outside of the fact that she is a
wife and a mother with a mental illness. She also tries to find herself and her
identity. She was a young queen, a virgin in a tower, she was the previous inhabitant,
the girl with all the energies. She tried these
Illegitimate Children In The Renaissance Era
CHAPTER NO. 1: Renaissance society, Illegitimacy and Primogeniture law.
Renaissance was known as the age of rebirth ; it was the period of fifteen to sixteen
century in England. This age was basically the golden period for art and literature
and major changes take places in the field of art and literature in the sixteen century
England.
Renaissance believes strictly in family system because family system plays greater
role in society. In renaissance England for a marriage average age for bride was 25 or
26 and for grooms its 27 or 28 but for aristocracy it was 19 to 21 for bride and 24 to
26 for groom. It was not uncommon for women to marry first time in their thirties

disrespect toward his mother and his own self. This birth was not his fault but society

Child wants love from family and acceptance from society but for a bastard child it
becomes difficult because society doesn t accept him and his parent (mostly father)
doesn t love him because of his illegitimate status. For a parent or father that child

his mistake so that parent tries to get rid of that child or try to ignore him. Society

becomes rebellious toward society and family.
Another problem which child suffers was inheritance issue. Firstly in renaissance
society there was primogeniture law and according to that law the first born child
will inherit all property. Secondly as illegitimate child even if he was a first child,
still he would get nothing from his father s inheritance. His mother was second

Ethical Issues Of Education Organizational Structure Essay
Ethical issues in Education Organizational Structure Ethics are a set of principles
that people use to decide what is right and wrong. Other words such as principles
and morals are used concurrently when discussing ethics. Principles are major
beliefs and rules that have a significant influence on the way things are done as well
as relationships with others. Morals are principals of right or wrong behavior that
are generally accepted by a society. With a basic understanding of these basic terms
of ethics, a more comprehensive and deeper understanding of ethics in general
becomes more attainable. Situational ethics can be grouped into various categories
such as political and governance ethics, social and economic ethics. Further
breakdown of these broad categories gives examples such as business ethics,
educational ethics, law ethics and internet ethics. Often, the impact of ethics is
greatly under rated , however the elite and aware majority do acknowledge ethics as
the foundation of global harmony. A specific analysis of an educational ethical
dilemma aims to understand the factors of determining right from wrong in an
attempt to reach a moral standing after analysis. The ethical dilemma is set in an

The representation of youths in A Clockwork Orange and If....
I will be investigating how youth is represented in the films A clockwork orange
(1972) and If.... (1968) and how the films affected the views of the time and how the
films influenced youths.
I have chosen to investigate these films because of how both films were released at
the time of the relaxation of violence in cinema.
I also chose these films because the similar themes in both films, as both films focus
on youths in society and there place in society, And also how Malcolm McDowells
character Michael Arnold Mick Travis in If.... served as an inspiration for his
character in Stanley Kubrick s A clockwork orangeAlex Delarge and the similarities
between the two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is one of the main theories I will be applying to the two films I will be
analysing, IF.... And A Clockwork Orange .
One of the main things I that is important in both films are the costume, in both
film are uniforms seen on many of the characters throughout the film, in a
clockwork orange, set in a dystopian future Britain, Alex and his Droogs wear a
specific uniform and so do other gang type groups of youths in the film, this is
intertextuality of youth at the time were many teenager became part of a group by
the way they dressed with the Mods, Rockers, Teddy boys and later the Punks, it
was very commonly know that wore these types of uniforms. The youthful
characters in if.... Also wear a uniform, the film is set in a boarding school in
England so most of the characters you see, except the teachers wear a school
uniform. In both films there is also a clear difference between the teenage
characters and the character that represent authority in each film, in A Clockwork
Orange when Alex is arrested all of the prisoners wear matching suits and the
prison guards and anyone that has authority over is wearing a suit, this is the a
stereotype a the typical man accepted in society showing how Alex is being
changed to fit this stereotype in the film when is his realised from prison and he s
wearing a suit and so are some of this old friends.
There is also a change in costume in if...., for the final scene, the main protagonists
change into a causal military style
Hate Speech And Hate Speech
Hate Speech: No Exceptions for Malicious Intentions
As a constitutional right, people often exercise their right to freedom of speech
believing that they also have the right to voice their opinions which can be
provocative to opposing parties no matter where they stand. There is a defining line
between what can be constituted as hate speech and free speech. Depending on the
way that it is expressed, voicing an opinion can easily be misinterpreted causing
certain people to feel threatened or attacked, then leading to dangerous physical
outbursts. The right to exercise one s own opinion that can challenge or provoke
others should be deterred or at least limited if safety of all parties, even those not
directly involved, cannot be guaranteed. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Phelps in regards to the Westboro Baptist Church rally outside of a fallen soldiers
funeral, it is to a great extent inappropriate for the followers of the church to have
gathered in such close proximity to the funeral with the signs they were holding
with messages like, Thank God for Dead Soldiers and Thank God for 9/11 . It is
understandable that the church wanted to voice their opposition against the United
States... tolerance of homosexuality, particularly within the military but at a funeral
for someone who fought for the country where people are grieving should not have
been permitted (Roberts et al. Facts and Case ). Chief Justice Roberts et al. , in
Facts and Case Summary Snyder v. Phelps , mentions that the church did alert
public authorities of what their plans were, where they would be, and did in fact,
comply with all police instructions . There are a variety of different locations where
military gather that the church could have chosen to gather around but having
picketed outside of a funeral lacks the courtesy to the family of the soldier and to
the soldier himself having given his life to serving our country. Any free speech that
might be deemed as hate speech should not be protected around funerals, churches,
memorial grounds, or locations and events of that sort due to its blatant disrespect
which will cause those who are not participating in speaking their opinion to feel
provoked or disrespected, possibly leading that
Tragic Comedy of Tennessee Williams A Streetcar Named...
A Streetcar Named Desire as Tragic Comedy
Tennessee Williams A Streetcar Named Desire is considered by many critics to be
a flawed masterpiece. This is because William s work utilizes and wonderfully
blends both tragic and comic elements that serve to shroud the true nature of the hero
and heroine, thereby not allowing the reader to judge them on solid actuality. Hence,
Williams has been compared to writers such as Shakespeare who, in literature, have
created a sense of ambiguity and uncertainty in finding a sole view or aspect in their
works. Because of the highly tragic elements encountered in Streetcar, many
immediately label it a tragedy. Nevertheless, the immense comical circumstances
encountered in the play ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a desperate last attempt to preserve her aristocratic values, she must combat
everything that Stanley Kowalski is. While she represents everything that is sacred
within cultural boundaries, that of which being the love of language, music, art,
etc...Stanley is the brute opposite. He is highly animalistic and primitive in his ways
and serves as the sole destroyer of everything Blanche embodies. The first time I laid
eyes on him I thought to myself, that man is my executioner! That man will destroy
me... (Williams 351). This goes to show that, since there can be no coexistence
between classes, Blanche, the romantic delicate southern belle, will meet her doom at
the hands of the crude and savage Stanley.
However, on a psychological level, Stanley emerges as the hero. The sexually
healthy and sacred marriage he shares with his wife is in staunch contrast to the
perverted and debauched sexual exploits of Blanche. In the role as the
psychological profaner, Blanche is just as much to blame for her rape as Stanley is.
Blanche is a profane and perverted intruder into his sacred yet crude domain. Thus,
he reacts violently when he feels that his household is being threatened. Stanley
seeks above all, to retain order and symmetry within his created existence. Stanley
and Blanche, on their respective levels, serve as the classic heroes struggling for self
preservation. One must deal with both the social and

Management Gary Woodlin March 20, 2016 Training Plan Introduction Landslide
Limousines is an automobile company which going to deal in provision of cars
that helps in the free mobility of people. It is factual that it has an impact on
environment through emission of dangerous gases like carbon dioxide because of
the use of fossil fuels. Since the company is projected to grow in sales by ten

This is because it s cheaper for the company which is going through different
challenges. There will be guidelines to follow in this training. Use of timetables
will be recommended for different departments to make sure that no excuses are
made. Employees who miss training will be punished or suspended if just cause is
not provided. This training is intended to equip different workers in different
departments with skills for efficient production. The training is expected to be
effective because it will be carried out by different departments and not general
training. Performance sheets of different departments will be drafted to assess their
performance. Since the company s net revenue is going to be $50,000, a change in
net income will mean that the training was effective. If the company hits its target of
ten percent annual turnover, it will prove the training had a serious impact on
different departments. The final results of the impact of this planning will be reached
after assessing different departments before the training. It will be through recording
how much each department contributes to the company. The monitoring of this
training will be through supervisors who also act as middle managers of the
company. They will observe and record progress of different employees and give
recommendations. The collection of information will be both oral and practical. The
oral part will involve questionnaires which will

  • 2. Puritan Ideology In Early America Puritan ideology had a profound effect upon early America. Though they came to the New World mainly for religious freedom after attempting to purify the Church of England, they left an impact beyond just the spiritual as many men of the Puritan faith helped shape the young country. This obviously led to the Puritans having a dramatic effect on the literature The whole life of a Puritan was dedicated to God, as He was the only one who could offer salvation from eternal damnation. They believed that humans are sinners incapable of earning God s merit on their own, and for that reason they observed strict moral codes in order to ensure that they may receive God s grace. This central idea, God s long withstanding mercy, a central idea reflected in many of the early writings of America... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of his sermons, A Model of Christian Charity espouses central Puritan ideals. As stated before the Puritans believed in a strict moral code in order to gain God s grace. One means of living up to this code was helping those who were less fortunate. Winthrop not only recommended charity towards others but stated it was a Christian duty saying, When there is no other means by whereby our Christian brother may be relieved in his distress, we must help him beyond our ability (208). In other words, he believed that as Christians the people should go through drastic measures in order to help his common man. This lends itself to Puritan ideals, as he personally believed this was a way of completing one s covenant with God and later suggested that if all Christians can strive to practice the morals expressed in the Bible that they could perhaps create a utopian community as a safe haven for all including the Native Americans. This in particular was important at the time as the writings of Winthrop can perhaps be attributed to improving relationships between the colonist and their neighbors in the new
  • 3. Hardness And What Impact Does It Have On Water Quality 1. What is hardness and what impact does it have on water quality? Hardness is the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in the water. Hardness impacts on water quality throughout the aesthetic acceptability by consumers (meaning the concentration of the calcium and magnesium and other dissolved solids are measureable by the consumers). In addition to, economic and operational considerations (which is controllable throughout the treatment or blending in public drinking water), hard water tends to leave scale deposition in the water distribution system, as well as in heated water applications. (Hardness in Drinking water, 2011). 2. What water quality standards are associated with water hardness? There is no Primary or Secondary standard for water hardness by EPA. Also hardness has no health risk. As the hardness of water is classified: 0 to 60 mg/ as calcium carbonate is classified as soft; 61 to 120 mg/L as moderately hard; 121 to 180 mg/L as hard; and more than 180 mg/L as very hard. (Water quality criteria. (n.d.). 3. Briefly describe your understanding about pH and why is pH important in water treatment. Give two examples. pH is a measure of the hydrogen ion activity in the water and is determined by the relative number of the hydrogen ions for acidity and hydroxide ion for alkalinity, thus mathematically expressed as pH= log [H+] where [H+] is the hydrogen ion activity . pH values are calculated in powers of 10.Thus, the hydrogen ion concentration of a solution

When the grim reaper would come to claim Herrera, Noriega would gain control of Herrera s leadership role, and in 1981, when Herrera was aboard a plane that crashed into the mountains, Noriega did just that . In order for complete control of Panama, he needed the power of the Panama Defense Force (PDF) at his will, and because of his desire for ultimate power he convinced Ruben Dario Paredes to resign from the leadership position of the PDF. During his complete control of Panama, he was situated as an ally of the United Statesgovernment because he supplied information to organizations, such as the CIA, DEA, and the Army.
  • 5. The Discovery Of North America The discovery of North America sparked a new era of exploration, expansion, and colonization. Many European countries took the opportunity to develop a new territory where they could prosper financially and benefit their home country as much as possible. The trip overseas was strenuous, as was maintaining positive relationships with Native Americans and running a successful colony. Although all European countries who showed interest in establishing territories in the Americashad their own reasons for doing so, some countries did a better job executing their colonizing than others. Britain, France, and Spain were the three most successful countries in terms of colonizing a new land for their country. The Spanish were amongst the best explorers at the time, establishing settlements in Hispaniola and Mexico. They were looking for wealth, power, and to expand their territory. An explorer named Hernan Cortes invaded the massive Native empire of the Aztecs, which was far richer and larger than any town in Spain. When invited into the city, Cortes sought to conquer, enslave and steal from the wealthy city. By forming many alliances with Native tribes who hated the Aztecs, the Spanish overtook the city, showing no mercy towards their enemies. They enslaved those they didn t kill, and disassembled some of the former Aztec pyramids into Christian Cathedrals. Cortes was eventually named governor of Mexico after his victory. The Spanish had more urban establishments in the Americas
  • 6. Types Of Mainstream School Schools Essay There are four types of mainstream school that have to adhere to the national curriculum are funded by the LEA (Local Education Authority). These are: Community schools. Are run by the local authority, which employs the staff and owns the building and/ or the land and also decide on the admission criteria. They promote strong links with the local community and may use the school facilities for local groups such as adult education or childcare classes. Foundation/ Trust schools. Are run by the governing body, who decide on the school admission policy with the local education authority. The school, buildings and the land will be owned by the governing body or a charitable foundation. A trust school which is kind of like a foundation school, which will form a charitable trust with an outside business, although the school will have to provide any additional support services which the school may require. It is up to the governing body and parents on whether the school becomes a trust school or not. Voluntary schools. There are two types of voluntary schools, voluntary aided and voluntary controlled. Voluntary aided schools are mainly religious or faith schools, although anyone can apply for a place their no matter what their background is. As with a foundation school, the governing body employs the staff and sets the admission criteria. They are funded partly by the governing body, partly by a charity and partly by the Local Education Authority. The governing body helps

(LRNA) has redesigned their dealerships and selling process with the objective of building and enhancing equity for its brand. Land Rover is a niche player in a very crowded and rapidly maturing product category. Competition is fierce and is dominated by large global competitors with extensive dealer networks who differentiate their products largely by size, features, and price. The company has relatively few dealerships and cannot afford the volume of advertising or promotion that its primary competitors can. The company must choose to depend upon positioning its product as a specialty brand, characterized by brand insistence on the part of its buyers. Charles Hughes, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We would also advocate Love of Product seminars for staff and retail partners because we think individuals who believe in the product sell it best. Lastly, LRNA must determine if it should continue its use of a dealer network or convert these franchises into freestanding, exclusive retail outlets called Land Rover Centres. Though development of Land Rover Centre s across the nation seems like a risky move, especially in the face of declining luxury car sales and dealership consolidation, we wholeheartedly support it. Part of the lure of the Land Rover aura is the willingness to tread new territory, take risk and be revolutionary in leadership style. Land Rover Centre s will do just that. Land Rover Centre s will increase consumer exposure to the Land Rover family of vehicles and the Land Rover way of life in a friendly, stress free environment. We want consumers to not only drive Land Rover vehicles, but to live the Land Rover lifestyle. We want Land Rover vehicles to expose consumers to the wealth of new experiences they are seeking. Centre development costs are high, but we believe the payoff will exceed costs. During this part of the novel, Pi s father is teaching him a lesson by letting a tiger brutally kill a goat right in front of him. He is trying to teach Pi to not go near an animal such as tigers because they are incredibly dangerous. I believe this thread represents the foreshadowing of what is to come for Pi. When Pi and Ravi s father was telling them about staying away from tigers he said Tigers are very dangerous. The name Pi is also symbolic because as Pi stated: I was named after a swimming pool (8) The word Piscine in French translate to swimming pool in English. The significance of his name is because he spends 227 days in a huge swimming pool (the ocean) fighting for his life. The thread develops during the novel because as the novel goes on and he s stuck on the lifeboat, Pi starts to question who Pi really is. When he starts questioning who he is, he finds it hard to learn who he truly wants to be. The message the author is trying to get across is be true to yourself. 3) Young Pi s dedication to three religions As explained in the book, Pi follows three different religions; Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity. Pi is extremely interested in all three religions and tries to find himself through religion. Although, he does not understand why he can t follow all three religions. But he can t be a Hindu, a Christian and a Muslim. It s impossible. He must choose. (76) This thread represents that he dedicates himself to the things he believes in and will fight for what he believes in. Even when his family disagreed with his decision of following all three religions, he still fought for what he believed. This thread develops during the novel because while he is on the lifeboat Pi starts questioning who truly he is and wants to be. The young boy who was once dedicated to vegetarianism, which was rooted in his religion, must make a life changing decision.
  • 11. Reasons for the Gap between Social Classes in America USA is a very big country with a lot of people and the social classes are very important. We can see that social class plays big part of people s life. Everyday people are working, studying, trying to be better. Even though right now it s time when everyone has many opportunities in his life, anyway there is a gap between classes and groups of people with same features. And your background probably will build your future. And we need to find what kind of class we have right now and look into these classes. The main idea is that Social Classesstill exist and it s most general part of U.S.A society. There are three reasons why gap between groups still exist. The first reason is that everyone has different economic status. People divide by groups with same ideas, religion, economic status, political views, and cultural features. For example in U.S.A we have poor people, very rich people, and kind of middle people and we can t say that these families are same. People from each group have different opportunities in education, medicine, and job. If you are from rich family you have more chance to be succeed in this world, for you it will be much easier unlike someone from poor family. The children from rich families will get best college or university degree, will find good job, and will learn how to be rich from their parents. Milton Friedman Summary American Economists, Milton Friedman stated in his famous 1970 New York Times Magazine article, the manager is the agent of the individuals who own the corporation , he continues with writing about how the manager s primary responsibility is to conduct the business in accordance with [the owner s] desires . While at this time, this assumption was greatly appreciated considered, many economists have to come to the realization that there are a lot of flaws associated with this view. It has since then been developed and critiqued. In this essay, it is my intention to discuss the implications and problems that came along with Friedman s opinion. Touching upon theories such as the principal agenttheory to solidify the limitations of this view in practice. I will also discuss the relationship between a shareholder centered perspective and value transfer and value creation. First, we must understand what Friedman s view is on corporate social responsibility. What are the social responsibilities that a corporationmust follow? Friedman discussed in his article that it is the corporation s responsibility to make as much money as possible for the stockholder. This statement made by him made me wonder about safety for the workers, excessive pollution, and how situations are handled in less developed countries and child labor laws. I think that Friedman was not aware how this statement would be interpreted, especially in an inappropriate way. He was probably looking at the short

  • 15. The Trope Of The Sphere Interestingly, it is via Borges, a well known master in the creation of literary labyrinths, that we are able to find several possible explanations for these inner circularities, for instance, through his recurrent references to the trope of the sphere. Take some of the short fictions that constitute his 1941 volume The Garden of Forking Paths, namely Lottery in Babylon and The Library of Babel . Not only does Borges tell us that the Babylonians obey the dictates of chance, surrender their lives, their hopes, their nameless terror to it, but it never occurs to them to delve into its labyrinthine laws or the revolving spheres that manifest its workings (Borges 1998: 104; emphasis added), but also his Library of Babel is a sphere whose exact center is any hexagon and whose circumference is unattainable (113). Moreover, the trope of the sphere whose center is everywhere and its circumference nowhere would be later analysed by Borges in an essay titled Pascal s Sphere [1951]. In it, the significance of the sphere as a double paradox of time /infinity and of unity/multiplicity becomes clearer, by means of a line that he draws from Xenophanes of Colophon to Pascal in order to... For some, it may be subtle, taken in tiny bites along the way, and for others it could be in one traumatizing moment. Ang Lee, director of The Life of Pi, explores this theme throughout his film. Lee shows the viewer this loss in the use of imagery, lighting, and color. He takes the viewer on a journey through the eyes of Piscine Patel as his innocence and humanity slowly get chipped away and he is forced to do what is necessary to survive and the lengths he goes to to regain that lost innocence. I have seen it in their eyes. Appa is set on teaching him that an animal s only thought is survival. The scene dims as a zoo worker ties a goat to Richard Parker s cage. Things changed after the day of Appa s lesson; the world had lost some of its enchantment. Low lighting is used again during the storm that takes the life of Pi s family. Lee uses red flashes of light to emphasise the horror of the sinking ship. As Pi clings to the liferaft that falls into the ocean when a terrified zebra leaps to safety and breaks its leg. In this scene, Richard Parker then climbs on the raft. Out of instinct, Pi jumps off and into the choppy waters. While underwater, Pi sees the blue glow of the ship sinking to the bottom of the ocean, leaving the viewer with a sense of the heartache Pi must feel. Ang Lee uses low key lighting and little contrast again when Pi must discuss the events of the shipwreck with the interviewers. The vivid colors and lighting effects fade away as he walks the interviewers through the identity of the zebra, the hyena,

It is based on a futuristic situation where a company has created an advance synthetic human form referred to as replicants. The replicants were sent to the off world and used to further space exploration and used as slaves. The replicant who were not sure of their nature, used belief as a sense of comfort. They used the photographs to validate their pasts. The humans in the movie seem to have a very aristocentric point of view. They use the replicants and other forms of genetic engineering to further themselves. Although the replicants bleed when shot, have feelings, including the abilities to love, the humans still view them as mere experimental specimens. The replicants are actually equal to if not superior to the humans, yet the humans still see themselves as being superior. When the escapee replicant learn about their actual nature as well as their short life span, they revolt. This is a fundamental response according to Camus. When confronted regarding his mother, Lloyd (one of the escaped replicants) becomes violent and irrational. Perhaps this is due to the lack of nurturing received as a child. The aim of this study is to investigate how managers understand and manage the work family balance practices (WFBPs) and how undertaking these new practices impact their dual level position (i.e. organisation and individual level) in the organisation. To achieve this aim, this study will first explore the work family relationship that has been broadly and conceptually defined by previous scholars and different conceptual definitions were taken into account. The term used in this study is Work Family Balance Practices (WFBPs) that will be used to refer to the human resource practices and policies establish by organizations. Namely, these available practices are able to implement amongst workers in the workplace. Although the work life and family life are different, yet they are interconnected (Clark, 2000). Thus, this study views various perspectives when conceptualizing the work, family and work family balance following on from the earlier discussion. This chapter is divided into seven sections. It starts with the definition of term Work Family Balance Practices (WFBPs). It then looks at how this term has been alternated and used in different ways. After this brief introduction, the second section will briefly discuss the origin of work and family from a conceptual background of the work family area related. The third section will continue to discuss the understanding of terms of work and family from the conceptual background of work and family area. The fourth section

  • 21. Impact Of Jean-Jacques Rousseau s Discourses On The Arts... Written in 1750, Jean Jacques Rousseau Discourses on the Arts and Sciences is his analysis on how scholarly pursuits have affected the development of civil society throughout history. Rousseau argues that the arts and sciences have hurt the growth of society, leading people to develop negative attributes. To fully understand the arguments of Rousseau, it is important to look at his past to see how events in his life have affected his philosophy. Rousseau was originally from Geneva, Switzerland, and moved to Paris as a young adult. This had a dramatic effect on his outlook on life. Geneva was a relatively egalitarian and virtuous society, and Rousseau perceived Paris as a harsh juxtaposition to those ideals. He found people to be very focused

Priestley In the play An Inspector Calls, a message is being portrayed to the reader by J. B Priestley and in my opinion, the main bearer of this message is the inspector. Being of an ambiguous nature, he appears to live in a different world to the family with whom he deals; the Birlings and it is his dramatic function in the play that I shall be analysing. Firstly, we have the Stage Instructions to consider. Throughout the play, there is no mention of Inspector Goole s physical appearance except in the first set of stage instructions when he enters the Birlings house. As Inspector Goole is questioning the members of the household, Priestley has made sure it is obvious that there is a certain order in which they must questioned. When Gerald asks to see the picture the inspector says, hold on, your time will come and one line of inquiry at a time This shows he has already planned out whom he will speak to first and last and what information he will have. Due to the fact he already knows that each of them holds a key to Eva Smith s death, it is likely he could be a time traveller travelling back in time to punish the Birlings and make them realize the consequences of their actions. The dialogue from the other characters also helps us to comprehend the role of Inspector Goole in An Inspector Calls. I especially think this is achieved by Mrs. Birlings views on Eva Smith towards the end of the play, she thinks of Miss Smith a an impertinent child and apparently. was giving herself ridiculous airs… that were simply absurd for a child in her position. This signifies that Mrs. Birling does not think highly of the girl and bearing in mind the social and historical context of this

We can turn on a radio or select a song on a menu and it chimes back at you the melody of the song you selected. A man named Scott de Martinville of the 18th century was fascinated by the way photographs preserved images, and he felt as if he could do the same with sound. The invention of the phonograph was the beginning of the music industry. Musicians could now use a machine to record their sounds and then publish and dis tribute records. With records came record labels, the leaders of the music business. Then just like everything else in a capitalist country it became all about the money, rather than the music. The business aspect of music should be based off of independent artistry in opposed to corporate wel fare. Ludwig van Beethoven one of the most talented, prolific, and remembered composers of all time was an independent artist. One has to wonder, how did composers/musicians make their money 150 years before labels were established? Beethoven used the same methods as an inde pendent artist would today. He would do live performances on piano or composing a large or chestra. These performances would bring profit while expanding popularity just like modernized artists. Beethoven also found profit in selling his sheet music, patronage, and being an instructor. This was the unintentional start of independent music, and it continued to be this way until one man decided to industrialize the

  • 28. The United States Of America And Spain Essay The late 1800s was a high tension and tumultuous time for both the United States of America and Spain. Spanish Colonialism had long been receding from its once powerful stronghold in the 16th and 17th centuries, and in the 1890s, the United States would make certain to diminish the last of Spain s outlets. The precedent for the American, superpower perspective of the late 1800s is in large part due to President James Monroe s Doctrine establishing the United Statesas the sole entity of social, political, and economic interest in the Western Hemisphere. The Monroe Doctrine clearly spells out that any territorial advances (or in this case, any territorial claims, whatsoever) would be recognized as an act of aggression and the U.S. would act accordingly (hint, hint war). This document shaped the United States as the sole enforcer of both commerce and democracy in the Western Hemisphere in the minds of its constituents. Thusly, it is the least bit unusual to see President McKinley asking to declare war against the Spanish in defense of his country s interest. President William McKinleys Declaration of War is written to the Congress of the United States as a plea to go to war in defense of American interests and the Cuban people. The document was written in 1898, and its objective was simple: persuade Congress to allow him to declare war. Although the document may shape William McKinley as a strong proponent of the now called Spanish American War, he very much wished to

The region, or a part of it, is also known as the Holy Land and is held sacred among Jews, Christians, and Muslims. They were to converge and confront each other in Palestine where, it was initially thought by some, they could each achieve their aspirations in an atmosphere of mutual accommodation. The two movements, in fact, proved incompatible and the majority of Arab suffering resulted. Beginning in the 1800 s, oppression of Jews in Eastern Europe sparked a mass emigration of Jewish refugees. Some Jews formed a movement called Zionism, which sought to make Palestine an independent Jewish nation. The first Zionist Congress was held in Switzerland in 1897 and it issued the Basle programme on the colonization of Palestine and the establishment of the World Zionist Organization (WZO). Then, in 1906, The Zionist congress decided the Jewish homeland should be Palestine. The only problem was that there already was a large Arab Palestinian population inhabiting the area. For this reason, Zionism was used as a propagandist tool to rid Palestine of the Arabs and to start a new nation for the Jews. A look at the fabric of Jewish Zionists that emigrated to Israel exhibited the driving forces and it displayed how massively the movement developed. For Russian Jews, it was the desire to escape totalitarian oppression. Religious Jews went there hoping for the day of messianic redemption. From the story, it can be inferred that this is a woman with a sudden onset of mental illness, a woman who has lost her identity and sense of belonging; and a woman who is consciously aware of all this, knowing she is a burden to her loved ones. This mother shows signs of her mental illness almost right off the bat, when, after looking at her son, she began yelping without tears, retching in between (39). The onset of this illness appears to be very sudden. The story begins with One winter evening she looked at them....the sight of them made her so sad and sick she did not want to see them ever again (39). It seems as if just one evening she suddenly begins to feel this way. When the son says, It s alright Mommy (39), causing the father to respond Mommy is sick (39), shows that the father did not have time to explain this to the son any time before. There is no evidence given in the story as to what caused her mental illness, though we can infer that the onset was quite sudden. A Streetcar Named Desire as Tragic Comedy Tennessee Williams A Streetcar Named Desire is considered by many critics to be a flawed masterpiece. This is because William s work utilizes and wonderfully blends both tragic and comic elements that serve to shroud the true nature of the hero and heroine, thereby not allowing the reader to judge them on solid actuality. Because of the highly tragic elements encountered in Streetcar, many immediately label it a tragedy. Nevertheless, the immense comical circumstances encountered in the play ... That man will destroy me... (Williams 351). This goes to show that, since there can be no coexistence between classes, Blanche, the romantic delicate southern belle, will meet her doom at the hands of the crude and savage Stanley. However, on a psychological level, Stanley emerges as the hero.
