Chinese Foreign Policy And Its Effect On The Regional...
The general consensus among scholars concludes that China is assertive (Chen, Pu Johnston, 2014,
176). The assertive conduct of China can have an impact on the regional order and stability in South
China Sea. The scholars have different views on the assertiveness of Chinese foreign policy (Chen et
al., 2014, 176). The argument in favour of implementing assertive foreign policy affirms that China
has good intentions regarding the South China Sea (Chen et al., 2014, 181). China is required to have
an assertive conduct because a moderate approach would not bring regional stability (Fangyin, 2016,
877). The opposing argument on assertive foreign policy is concerned with the aggressive and
provocative behaviour of China (Chen et al., 2014, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
China holds historic rights to the South China Sea through its nine dash line in most of the contested
waterways in the region where it can extract resources (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 77 78). The maritime
claims and sovereign claims of China in the South China Sea through the nine dash line must comply
with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 78). China had historic rights to
the South China Sea through the nine dash line until it ratified the UNCLOS in 1996 (Rapp Hooper,
2016, 78). China is bound to follow the international law to defend its sovereign rights despite the
tribunal in the Hague ruling in favour of the Philippines (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 81).
The ruling of the tribunal in The Hague was hard on China (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 78). The arbitrary
decision of the tribunal has brought China to a legal crossroads (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 82). The ruling
has placed limitations to the maritime claims of China in the South China Sea (Rapp Hooper, 2016,
80). The maritime claims of China to water and airspace in the South China Sea was declared invalid
under international law (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 76). China cannot legally continue to declare military
zones in the water or airspace around the reefs it occupies, nor can it do so more than 12 nautical miles
from the rocks it controls (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 80). The invalidated the maritime claims of China to

Student Apathy In Education
The Problem
Because kids come from different cultural and economic backgrounds, it is difficult to engage all
students 100% of the time. Furthermore, many students, to help their parents financially, work after
school or misses school entirely to take care of their siblings while Mom and Dad work many parents
cannot afford daycare. Some students are homeless, living on the street or with relatives for a week or
two at a time. Moreover, our refugee students (from war torn countries) suffer from both Post
Traumatic Stress Disorder and anxiety caused by the process of acculturation. Students who have
normal home lives may suffer abuse, neglect, and may have family addicted to drugs and alcohol.
Stress and anxiety levels are at an all time high for today s youth; therefore, it is not surprising that
they are apathetic about learning. While this general apathy in education has increased rapidly over the
last few years, there is good news. We already have the remedy and it costs nothing. De Lay (2014),
suggests that student apathy is a by product of mediocre teaching and the absence of a learning
purpose. At its best, the current educational system is archaic. As a result, students are taught to think
in a linear fashion that is wholly unlike the world in which they live (Robinson, 2010). Educational
practices brought into the 21 century will encourage students to feel the excitement of learning. Not
only is it important for students to become lifelong learners, but

Indian and European Conflict in the New World Essay
Indian and European Conflict in the New World Since 1492 to late into the17th the century there was
perpetual struggle between the power hungry Europeans and the natives in the New World. Pitted
against each other, the Dutch, English, French, Spaniards, and Indians struggled to maintain control of
what they viewed as rightfully theirs. The English, were struggling to settle on the eastern coast and
had no use and respect for the Indians or their land and way of life. At first maintaining a tentative
relationship, the English, in the case of the Quakers and Puritans, soon realized that the Indians had
very little to offer and were an obstacle on the path of their progress. Spain was primarily interested in
missionary activities and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

to the Indians, and the colonists must purchase it from the natives before settling it, and imposed a ban
on the sale of alcohol. The land Penn s colony inhabited had comparatively few Indians, but this was
subsequently beneficial because there was less of a chance for rivalry and competition. As long as
Penn played an active roll in the happenings of his colony, there was little conflict or cause for
complaint by both the settlers and the Indians. After 1712 however, as Nash has pointed out, Penn had
little role in the affairs of Pennsylvania. In 1710 Swiss and German settlers arrived, whom did not
share Penn s and the Quaker s pacifistic attitude, and who s land hunger and disdain for the Indians
undermined the Quaker attitude of trust and love for the natives. Nash pg.98 These new settlers came
to the New World to escape the oppression of their homeland, Eventually settling in Philadelphia. But
these new peoples were not willing to live peacefully and cooperate with the Indians whom they

American Realist Movement
HAS THE AMERICAN REALIST MOVEMENT LEFT ANY SUBSTANTIAL MARK ON
JURISPRUDENTIAL THOUGHT? We must approach this question in consideration of the fact that
the American Realist movement never purported to formulate a complete theory of law which could
stand alone to tell us what law is. Instead, the basis was that official conduct in dispute settlement in
all kinds of dispute was the focal point for the analysis of the law s impact, facilitating the ability to
make legal predictions based on expected official action. I think that to measure the impact of this type
of thinking on jurisprudential thought, we need to keep in mind how it seeks to differ from other
theory. There are quotations that encompass Realism s ideals very well. ... Show more content on

Even Hart himself admits that, ‘at the fringe of . (law), we should welcome the rule sceptic.
However he masks this with the ‘unquestionably rule governed operations over the vast, central areas
of the law. Most positivists will admit that judicial discretion is inevitable in hard cases, and that
decisions of the common law are posited in the courts, but the important thing for the realist is that
law in it s entirety is a shoreless world of uncertainty. For me, the realist ideal is a tool whereby we
can consider decisions throughout the vast central areas of law that Hart suggests, more than we could
from a positivist or natural law stance. The reason is that if what the realists say is credible, we must
accept that in some or all central cases, a judge can pick from a number of precedents as discussed, in
order to find the one that best fits his predetermined and subjective answer. However, view this from
the positivist outlook, and the whole process fits together nicely. The judge has simply applied a
posited rule and achieved the right outcome subject to a rule of recognition. For both the realist and
the positivist, the decision is law. The difference though, is that realism allows us to think about the
moral dilemmas within the adjudication, whilst positivism does not need to consider any moral
accordance to rationalize its theory. Just considering the argument in this way, it becomes clear that
the realist approach could certainly be said to have more practical

Peripheral Nerve Complications
The incidence of hoarseness was 11% after PACU discharge and lasted a mean of 2 days. The etiology
of these symptoms was not formally established. It is possible that symptoms were due to prolonged
block of the phrenic and recurrent laryngeal nerves. (Liu et al, 2010). Borgeat et al 2001, in a
prospective study of ISB using a nerve stimulator concluded that one patient with Marfan disease
(0.2%) suffered pneumothorax. 0.2%of cases had episode of central nervous system toxicity in the
form of incoherent speech. Aspiration of blood was encountered in 0.5%of patients but no hematoma
was subsequently observed. Nerve injury after brachial plexus anesthesia varied from 0 to more than
5%. (Borgeat et al, 2001). Peripheral nerve complications are generally directly attributed to the
performance of the block itself, but this concept was challenged by Selander et al 1979, who indicated
that other factors may be responsible as well. (Selander et al, 1979). In 1974 Ward reported an
incidence of 3% of symptomatic pneumothorax after ISB by paraesthesia blind technique. The
pneumothorax was almost certainly produced by the prior attempt to carry out a supraclavicular block,

Polymerase Chain Reaction is a lab technique used to amplify DNA sequences. This lab involves
using a small sample of genetic material we obtained from our cheek cells and amplifying that
segment of DNA so you can determine if you are a homozygous, heterozygous, or non taster of
phenylthiocarbamide(PTC) . I think I am a homozygous recessive nontaster AVI AVI because I didn t
taste anything when tasting the PTC paper. Part one of this lab was DNA isolation. I got each tube

message to those we come across in this lifetime. The movie was truly inspirational in all aspects of
the word. I would not modify anything in this movie. I will integrate what I learned from this movie to
help my clients through the transformational process, but more importantly, to help them believe in

film was that we should believe in ourselves just as God believe in us. Perhaps the biggest lesson I
took away from this movie is that believing in ourselves regardless of what other people think is

Reach And Teach Case Study
The school to prison pipeline is a barrier in education due to lack of communication and sound
policies. The school policy should entail strategies to implement the reach and teach method to
minimize some of the on going distractions in the school environment. School discipline continues to
rise in many counties due to the lack of self discipline. In order for us to be able to reach and teach
students, we as adults must be able to communicate with each other without looking at the titles.
Subsequently, we need to accept ideas and focus on the main goals instead of contending with each
other. Working together to reach and teach is a great effort to move forward.
The Reach and Teach method is design to shape the behaviors to prepare students for the real world.
This method allows students to take accountability and responsibility for their behavior. This
intervention strategy will minimize some of the school violations within our schools. It also provides

Analysis of Religious Literacy In Stephen Prothero s Religious Literacy: What Every American Needs
to Know and Doesn t (New York: Harper Collins Publishers, 2008) 1 372, Prothero discusses how the
American society was once a religiously literate nation, how we became religiously illiterate, and how
(if willing) we can become religiously literate again. Prothero states that this book argues for both the
constitutionality and the necessity of teaching about religion in public schools and higher education.
He further explains that the main goal of this piece is to help citizens participate fully in social,
political, and economic life in a nation and world ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But his passion is also his downfall. By allowing his piece to be mainly background information,
Prothero can make his audience feel as if he is beating in information into their heads while losing
sight of the original argument. Stylistically, he also provides too many subsections with rough
transitions that can leave the audience to be temporarily confused on where he is going with his
argument. Stephen Prothero s Religious Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know and Doesn t,
can be a difficult read, as there are several passages which require numerous rereads in order to
understand. However, there is an occasional sentence or two that provides an interesting insight.
Stephen Prothero s Religious Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know and Doesn t, is not
suggested for audiences who are easily offended by different viewpoints of religion. This is also not
recommended as a light quick read due the complexity and confusion of the author s argument.

We Must Reform Teacher Tenure Essay
Teacher tenure is life long job protection for teachers who have been employed as a teacher for one or
more years depending on the state. The purpose of teacher tenure is to protect teachers from being
fired for political or personal reasons. It also prevents school districts from eliminating experienced
teachers in favor of less expensive teachers. The fundamental problem with teacher tenure is that it is
given to a teacher after only one year on the job and requires little to no additional effort. The
increased job security breeds complacency in many teachers who are teaching only to collect a
paycheck. There is a need for teacher tenure but the program must be drastically reformed.
What is Tenure? Tenure is a policy that basically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since salary is determined by the amount of experience, administrations could maximize a payroll
budget by cutting out the more experienced teachers in favor of less expensive, inexperienced
teachers.
Another great thing about tenure is that it allows teachers to have a teaching style that may conflict
with the style of the administration. Without tenure, teachers could possibly become clones. Each one
the same as the other without an ounce of originality, because many would worry that originality could
cost them their jobs. Students need creativity in the classroom since each one has a unique learning
style. Tenure allows teachers to approach subject matter in a way they feel will be the most effective
for their students.
Tenure also allows teachers the protection needed to challenge administration. This way, teachers can
act on the behalf of students or other faculty that have received unfair treatment. With tenure, a teacher
can go out on a limb and stand up for what he or she thinks is right without the fear of termination.
Back in the days before tenure, it was impossible for a teacher, mainly women, to have any kind of
social life outside of work. If anything they did was considered questionable and observed by a
superior or parent, they could be dismissed from their position as a teacher. Teacher tenure was a
much needed hero for many scrutinized teachers.

Cultural Depictions Of Spiders In Popular Culture
Throughout history, there have been many cultural depictions of spiders in popular culture, mythology
and in symbolic representation. In some instances, the spider symbolized patience and persistence due
to its hunting technique of setting webs and waiting for its prey to become ensnared. It is also a
symbol of mischief and malice for its toxic venom and the slow death it causes, which is often seen as
a curse. According to another set of literary archetypes, spider also symbolizes diligence, prudence,
caution, astuteness, but also deceit and cunning associated with creativity. In still other narratives,
spiders tend to appear as emblems of cruelty, aggression, greed and exploitation. In some cultures they

Literary Analysis Of Stephen King s Why We Crave Horror
Why is horror a necessity to human life? Why, when something horrible has taken place people want
to know all the gruesome details? Why is it that we all love packing into a movie theater to watch
innocent people be lynched and destroyed? In his essay Why We Crave Horror Stephen King
rightfully claims he has the answers to these troubling questions. He brilliantly states that humans
crave horror to face our fears, to regain a sense of normality, and have a little fun.
King s first great reason why we love horror is to prove we are not scared. King explains this by
comparing horror movies/stories to a roller coaster. At the beginning of his essay, he states that we
watch horror To show that we can, that we are not afraid, that we can ride the roller coaster (King,
Why We Crave 1). This a great comparison, because we can all relate to a situation like this. Horror
might not be our favorite thing to read or watch, but we do it to show we are brave enough to take it
on. Who would want to read about women being cut up and destroyed like in the short story
Strawberry Spring . For example, near the beginning of the narrator s encounter, a junior named John
Dancey happened upon a dead girl lying in a shadowy corner of the Animal Sciences parking lot
(King, Strawberry Spring 2). We try to avoid our worst fear of death, but when the time comes we will
read about it, because we can not look like a coward. We are Daring the nightmare (King, Why We
Crave 1) just to prove we have the guts.
Another reason why we crave horror is that we reestablish our feelings of essential normality (King,
Why We Crave 1). Let s say someone is having a horrible day, and feeling very depressed or down
about themselves. Well, reading a horror story like Strawberry Spring will cheer that individual up.
This is because we start to feel like We are still light years away from true ugliness (King, Why We
Crave 1). For example, at the end of the short story the narrator starts to realize he is the killer of all
the horrible murders, and didn t even know. The narrator says things like The lovely creeping fog and
Such an ugly word trunk and wondering why in the world I should be afraid to open it. We start to feel

Importance Of Cerebral Circulation
Cerebral Circulation
A constant flow of blood to the brain is vital to its proper functioning. Blood supplies the brain with
oxygen and to perform maximally the brain requires about 25% of the body s oxygen (Webb, 2016).
Lack of oxygen for a prolonged period results in cell death causing irreversible damage to the brain.
Two paired arteries, four total, supply the vital source of blood to the brain and spinal cord.
Arterial Structures
Blood supply to the brain is divided between the internal carotid arteries (ICA) and the vertebral
arteries. As stated in Cippola s text, the right and left ICA from the bifurcations of the common carotid
arteries and the ICA itself also split in the anterior and middle cerebral arteries. Its primary function is
to supply blood to the cerebrum. The vertebral arteries originate from the subclavian artery and then

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Typefaces
Effective type design depends upon a broad conceptual and perceptual comprehension of typefaces
and their corresponding potentials for communication and expression. To achieve this understanding, a
comparison between the selected Super Normal serif and sans serif cases is essential to be exhibited
and summarized in this part, providing references to the following creative part that will be showed in
the Chapter 4.
Overview
Generally, type design demonstrates the history of cultural changes, social expectations, economic
advancements and technological progresses. The impetuses for the creations of typefaces vary from
each other, which in this study, arise from four main sources: cultural, corporate, technological and
aesthetic. Without doubt, there motivations can be interrelated. For example, Helvetica, as the most
representative Super Normal typeface, was motivated by the cultural determination towards the
reconstruction after the Second World War and the aesthetic passion to revolutionize the decorative
typography as used to. Another example comes from the Microsoft Corporation, a major corporation,
commissioned Matthew Carter to design a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the Super Normal typefaces are characterized with timeless and restricted characteristics,
they are not tedious. Indeed, the typefaces in the study, in order to celebrate normality, have been
branded by the era they were born. The design of Bodoni embodies a considered eminent figure of the
eighteenth century, recalling the spirit and sensitivity of the Enlightenment that encompassed
mathematic and rational direction. Whereas Georgia, Tahoma and Verdana, riding the wave of
developing digital technology, keep sharpness, screen friendliness and approachability in design. Not

The White Heron By Sarah Jewett
In the short story the White Heron (1886), Sarah Jewett portrays a young little girl, Sylvia, bear the
temptation of money and affection from the young man with mental struggle, and resolutely
determined to protect the fairy of nature a white heron. Through describing Sylvia s authentic
emotions and using of vivid theme colors and exquisite word choice, Jewett delivers the story like
showing a lifelike 19 century country life drama in front of the readers.
The beauty of the story is about authentically conveying the author s emotion experience, depicting
the true feeling of the characters, and delivering the thought process by putting readers into their
shoes, in order to create resonance with the readers, like her emotion for the love of nature, for her
struggle towards money, and for the crush she had towards the hunter. Sylvia s love of nature showed

Sylvia s struggle towards the hunter is also lifelike. The hunter used the money to tempt Sylvia, which
drove her crazy. No amount of thought, could decide how many wished for treasure the ten dollars, so

Family Structure In Post-War Britian Essay
World War ǁ was a global military event, the most colossal conflict in history lasting from 1939 1945,
it involved most of the worlds nations including Great Britain. WWII had far reaching implications for
most of the world. The following essay will demonstrate the changes the UK family has undergone
since World War ǁ, the following essay will also throw light upon the changes in family types,
economic activities of women , power distribution, laws and sexuality with respect to disciplines of
sociology, economics, history and politics. Family used to be a single unit, consisting of a husband,

. More importance was given to the wife rather than the husband, as a companion and producer of
children The family shows both continuity and changes which can be seen by looking at nuclear
families and single parent families respectively. Before 1940s, marriage was considered an important
part of society and thought to be a social institution essential for order. Divorce and single parent
families were considered dreadful, sex outside marriage was not acceptable, it was a moral offense.
The tempo of divorces was very low, but this social behavior soon ended in the post war era. By
1960s, this was no longer the case, as women started to work. They became much more independent,
laws were changed and increase in divorces and cohabitation rates had shown that marriage was not
compulsory in one s life. Family structure has been changed and there is about one and a quarter
million single parents. A family making up to 19% of all families with children, the number of single
parents has almost doubled since the early 1970s. According to census 2001 report and labor force
survey, the rate of married couple (marriages) has decreased over the last ten years, (accounting for 71
per cent of families in 2006, compared with 76 per cent in 1996). In the same period, the proportion of
cohabiting couple increased to 14 per cent from 9 per cent. The proportion of lone parent families

Islam And The United States Essay
There is not much information on when Muslims first arrived in America, but there has been evidence
that some of the slaves were Muslim, but didn t have the ability to practice their religion freely, they
also tried to accommodate their faith with Christianity, but others were converted. It was about twenty
percent of the slaves in the US were Muslim. One of the first known Muslims in the United States,
was a slave from Morocco, named Estevanico, who was shipwrecked with Spanish Explorers near the
where the city Galveston, Texas is. After that there weren t many Muslims coming into the United
States until the twentieth century. This is shown by the evidence that one of the first mosques was
built in North Dakota in 1929, and while the mosque was demolished a Muslim cemetery still stands
near the spot of that mosque. Islam started in the 7th century with a prophet named Muhammad. It is
an Abrahamic religion, like Judaism and Christianity, but Muslims believe that Islam is a step further
than the other two religions.
According to a Gallup Poll from 2008, out of the 319751 respondents only 946 identified as Muslim,
which is around .29 percent of the respondents. In the Gallup report, they also mention that 35% of
Muslim Americans are African American, 18% are Asian, it is not broken down into whether it is

Circuit confirmed the district court s class certification (plaintiff) in 2007. However, Wal Mart was not

mistake in classifying the action certification. The Ninth Circuit panel recalled its primary decision
and issued a following, replacing opinion, which still allowed the class certification. In 2009, the
Ninth Circuit provided Wal Mart a rehearing for the previous court`s decision. As a result, Ninth
Circuit opinion was no longer effective. Supreme Court agreed to hear Wal Mart s appeal as Wal Mart

saying that the million plaintiffs did not have enough in common to base a class (a group of several

plaintiffs circumstances, the class action could not proceed as comprised. Critics of the opinion allege
that the decision makes it incredibly difficult to certify a class without a prohibitive amount of work

Summary Of Democracy Abroad, Lynching At Home
In Democracy Abroad, Lynching at Home , author Tameka Hobbs examines the history of racial
violence and lynchings in Florida, she focused especially on a string of ruthless lynchings that
occurred during the 1940s. She argues that these lynchings created difficult diplomatic moments
during both World War II and the Cold War period and that they forced the U.S. government to
become more active in prosecuting racial violence. While reading this book it is very hard to not get
upset. Although the stories of slavery and lynching are nothing new to the public it is just unbelievable
that such events could go on and are still happening to this day. Hobbs explores the reasons why
lynching continued in Florida when they were starting to wane elsewhere.

Art Of Lying Research Paper
Do photographs lie? Photographs can be deceiving to the public. Photos are used to convey messages,
positive and negative. Some photos manipulate people to attract them towards an advertising product.
Depending whether the photo is plain or photo shopped, it changes our perception. Photographers will
use various methods and techniques to achieve the desired photo in order to manipulate or educate.
The colors, shades, mood, setting, cropping and more allow the photo to be perceived differently.
These various methods play and manipulate the mind, especially in advertising, making the product
attractive and appealing to the human eye. According to the book, The Mirror with a Memory , in the

Photographs nowadays are mostly lying and affecting us negatively. They are able to lie right in front
of our face, deceiving us from reality. For example, images in business advertising which is not
foreseeable, but affects us mentally, psychologically, physically, and socially. One of top lying and
negative images are models. Images of women in advertising lies to us completely, eliminating the
truth and reality. Models are portrayed in images as absolute flawlessness, not a single line or pore to
be seen, which cannot possibly be achieved. Images of women in advertising manipulates by telling
them who they are and who they should be by showing ideal women, portraying them as objects
revolving around sex. Even male models in advertising images lie and deceive but not as severe as
women. A model, Cindy Crawford said, I wish I looked like Cindy Crawford . She knows she can t
possibly look like herself in the photo. These manipulating and deceiving images of models are
affecting girls self esteem by expecting them to be thin, hot, and flawless. The massive objectification
of women in photographs rises violence against women and is also one of the main causes of anorexia.
The way images/photographs are able to control and manipulate us is not foreseeable. Many would
say it doesn t affect them at all but overtime, it conquers your mind, more of a subconscious. Images
don t always lie in certain cases but are very powerful in achieving the desired goal, like they say, ads
sell more than products . It s not the product/object that attracts people, it s the

Normal Blood Glucose Level
Normal blood glucose level is around 90mg/100ml[11]. This level can be imbalanced in excess or a
deficit, but in a normal functioning body, the levels will return back to normal quickly by influence of
the pancreas. The pancreas contains alpha and beta cells that are responsible for secreting glucagon
and insulin, respectively[11]. Of interest to the pathophysiology of diabetes, is the role insulin plays in
the regulation of blood glucose. When glucose levels in the blood are elevated, insulin is secreted from
the pancreas and is circulated throughout the blood stream. Insulin lowers blood glucose by enhancing
transportation of glucose across cell membranes, especially muscle and fat cells[11]. Also, insulin is
responsible for inhibiting the breakdown of glycogen to glucose as well as the conversion of amino
acids and fats into glucose to help lower blood glucose levels[11]. At the cellular level, insulin
activates its receptor, which starts the cascade eventually leading to increased glucose uptake. In type
II diabetes, insulin is hypoactive, and does not engage in its normal role with blood glucose regulation.
This is different from type I, where insulin is not even secreted by the pancreas. When insulin is not
functioning properly, blood ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Pros And Cons Of Tenure
Tenure: the Good, the Bad, the Who Cares Governor Scott walker proposed a state budget in 2015 that
cut almost 300 million dollars from higher education and more controversially took tenure out of the
protection of state law (Flaherty, 2015). The Joint Finance Committee, with a vote of 12 4, cut tenure
protection for university faculty from state stature (Flaherty, 2015). After the vote in the Joint Finance
Committee many faculty members protested and we vocal about the University of Wisconsin needing
to pass eternal policy to protect faculty who have been tenured and to grant tenure to future faculty at
the same protection level of the state stature (Flaherty, 2015). May state officials however feel that
releasing tenure from the protection of state stature will allow universities more flexibility when
dealing with the budget cuts (Flaherty, 2015).
The exact history and start of tenure in academia is often debated between scholars and historians. For

tenure will start with the 1940 Fundamental policy statement created by the Committee on Academic

Examples Of Apitalism In Charles Dickens Great Expectations
apitalism in Charles Dickens s Great Expectations: A Critique Isam Shihada
Introduction: In England, the years spanning 1780 1840 witnessed rapid economic changes, which
propelled English society decisively towards industrialization. (Lloyd Jones Lewis, 2014) The
Industrial Revolution (1) transformed England from an agricultural to an industrial society where the
machine had replaced manual labor. This may have led to the rise of mass unemployment and the
exodus of workers from villages to cities in search of economic opportunities to survive. This also
accounts for the increasing number of slums along the Thames River and the exploitation of women
and children at the factories for extremely low wages. (Calmon, 1994) The Industrial ... Show more

. . all of one piece and consistently truthful as none of his other books are. (1937,p.xii) That period
witnessed the growth of capitalism accompanied by cycles of booms and drawbacks. Dickens Great
Expectations refers to the manipulation of the bourgeois employers, assisted by the government,
against the working class. They were not only used as machines by their employers, but were also
victimized by them. The working class s exploitation stemmed solely from materialistic purposes,
which resulted in a series of destructions such as the transformation of innocent characters into evil
ones. Within this context, Peter Childs and Nicolas Tredell argue that Dickens s Great Expectations
renders a world in which the individual human freedom and fulfillment is frustrated by what are
usually promulgated as society s great expectations, and those values usually associated with progress,
civilization and modernity. (2006,p.167) Charles Dickens harshly reviles the capitalist system that
would create and transform human beings into greedy creatures.(Houston,1992) He sheds light on the
impact of the Industrial Revolution and its capitalist system in transforming characters into pitiless,
selfish people devoid of emotions and on how it destroys all ties of affection and love and nourishes
feelings of snobbishness, selfishness, and

Improving Business Writing
Why is writing important in business? Writing is essential in any form of business. We use writing in
all types of communication such as: email, facsimile, letter writing, etc. Writing skills are important to
the business professional because it prepares the workplace for well written business communications.
The three topics I will cover can serve as an outline for improving writing skills in businesses. The
topics are principles of business writing, how to write an effective business letter, and how to improve

Following the Attention Line is the Body. The body contains detailed information about the topic. The
body includes the introductory paragraph, one or more body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph.
Finally, there is the closing. The closing is usually ended with a complementary closing and signature.
A list of examples include: Sincerely, Cordially, Best regards, and Yours very truly. Remember to
capitalize the first word in the complimentary closing and end it with a comma. After the closing,
there is a copy line. When the copy line is used, other people know who will be receiving a copy. The
copy line usually includes a symbol: c: for copy, pc: for photocopy, and bc: blind copy (used only to
limit readers of other copies). The names of the recipients should follow these symbols listed in
organizational rank (Writing@CSU: Writing Guide, 2004, p. 1). All of the components discussed
above are effective ways to write an effective business letter. An effective business letter speaks to a
specific reader. Therefore, the right type of business letter must reach the reader. The most common
types of business letters are: 1) Acknowledgement Letters, 2) Adjustment Letters, 3) Complaint

Photography Is Not Just About Taking Simple Photographs
In this generation people tend to take their photographs on their phones instead of hiring a
professional photographer to take them. Photography is not just about taking simple photographs.
Professional photographers need to understand the concept of what makes the best photographs.
Photographers must use lighting, different equipment, different types of photographs, and specific
subject matter to create unique photographs as well as how to finish and edit them. The beginning of
photography was in 1826, when Nicephore Niepce produced the first permanent photograph using a
camera obscura. Three years later in 1829, Louis Daguerre joined partnership with Nicephore Niepce (
Ted s Photographics The Fundamental Principles of Photography Explained. ). In 1839, years after the
death of Nicephore Niepce, Louis Daguerre became the first photographer to use silver iodide coated
plates and a small box to take a photograph (Careers in Focus 101). Motion photographs were made in
1877 using a series of still photographs to create the illusion of motion. In 1889, Thomas Edison
developed the first single unit motion picture camera; standards that are still used today (Careers in
Focus, 25). Many professional photographers use different type of equipment: cameras, lenses, and
accessories. Many photographers use different cameras and lenses depending on the type of
photograph they re going to take. Many photographers use the 35mm SLR (single lens reflect) camera.

Analysis of Will Smith s Party Starter
In order to analyze Will Smith s song and video entitled Party Starter, it is important to understand the
history of hip hop music. Hip hop music was created out of rap music. Rap has been around since the
1970s. It was originally used as a way for inner city African American youths to voice their daily
struggles. Most rap songs had a simple beat with words spoken to the rhythm of the beat. These songs
were usually upbeat even when the subject matter was serious. There was the impression or hope that
things will get better. Soon, corporate record labels started to repackage rap music as it gained in

The new music was labeled hip hop. Many of today s hip hop artists grew up listening to classic rap or
at least the 1990s gangsta versions. The lifestyle that was once frowned upon is now glamorized and
sought after. Even though hip hop has become commercially successful, it is still distributed by white
dominated corporate America. It is marketed through white dominated, mainstream media outlets.
Record companies seek out controversial artists that draw attention and free publicity in the media.
Female artists are marketed as sex symbols. If they aren t, their careers are short lived. They may
speak about equality between the sexes in their songs; they are still sexualized in a negative way in the
media. They are disrespected and often referred to as bitch or ho . Exotic dancing is glamorized.
Videos of half naked women dancing played on mainstream music networks has made today s youth
feel that this behavior is acceptable. Will Smith s Party Starter conforms to the commercial and
acceptable trends of hip hop in several ways. The way women are shown in the video is very typical of
hip hop today. There are a lot of beautiful, scantily dressed women dancing in a provocative way.
They are mostly African American women. The video portrays them as sex symbols. The clothing
worn by Will Smith is also fits the commercialized image of hip hop. He has on baggy jeans, a warm
up jacket, sneakers, a t shirt

Don Juan Womanizer
Charming, attentive, interested, witty, flirtatious, these are all traits of a womanizer. The only
difference between a womanizer and a good man is a womanizer acts in this manner to get in your
pants, not your heart. Don Juan the Trickster of Seville, his name says it all. Don Juan is a smooth
talking, egotistical, cunning, never changing womanizer who thrives off of seducing women. His love
for romance and women and his lack of moral obligation make him a guy that mothers warn their
daughters about. His intoxicating wit and charm are irresistible to those who catch his eye. Not only is
he a womanizer but a true representation of the wages of sin. Don Juan lives his life as if he is
untouchable and true definition of a risk taker when it comes to sin. Don Juan doesn t just give us a

For an example, in Don Hermanas Don Juan seduces a bride named Aminta. When he is seducing
Aminta he is mocking the innocence by saying by this white hand, a winter of pure snow, take my
hand (III, 290). He knows his hand (actions) aren t as pure as snow. Don Juan portrays arrogance and
high self esteem. He has an unrealistic self image in that he believes he is superior to others, and feels
it s his right to mock them. Don Juan feels he is superior because of his noblemen upbringing. His
father is a kingsmen and so is his uncle so he feels he can get away with more than the average person.
He has this air about him that he is better than everyone else and proves it with mockery. Everything
to Don Juan is a joke and he doesn t see why everyone gets so upset about his tricks. He is clearly
oblivious to punishment and he is reminded continually of punishment to come by Catalinon, his
father, and those women he tricks. Don Juan lacks the insight as to the significance of his behavior for
himself and other

Comparison between Othello and Skin
Compare and contrast the portrayal of the predicament of the outsider in the texts Othello and Skin. To
what extent are the differences between the two texts treatment of this theme due to their different
historical and cultural contexts? Othello and Skin are both excellent examples of how the outsider is
topic in which society is intrigued by. Both Sandra and Othello are both victims of their time and
geographical setting, as well as being considered different due to their race and achievements.
Although there are a great number of common themes through both Othello and Skin, such as racism,
relationships with both family and the community, gender roles in relationships, the role of the
outsider and the use of race in relationships, but the difference in historical context, personal
achievements, respect and setting between the two are so contrasting that it changes how the audience
empathises with the characters, as well as how both Sandra and Othello change during their respective
films. The Shakespearean play Othello is about how a black military leader in Venice is undone by an
elaborate plan thought up by Iago to overthrow Othello and obtain Othello s high position in Venice s
military society. Othello was set in the late 16th century, when Venice s trade was threatened by the
growing power of the Turkish Empire. The setting in itself prognosticates a rapid downfall, as during
Shakespeare s time, as Venice would have been synonymous with luxury and culture, but as

Aldous Huxley s A Brave New World
Aldous Huxley has presented us a compelling story in the 20th century called a Brave New World.
One of the most notable dystopian novels, it calls for a reader to conceptualize a world, in which
society and science are synonymous with each other, history had faded far into obscurity, and Henry
Ford, the creator of the assembly line, becomes a deity to many uniformed individuals. The book was
about how humans are no longer created by the conventional means of mating, rather artificially,
through the process of separating the ovaries and the sperm cells, and utilizing certain embryos in a
biological process called Bokanovskification, the act of stimulating an embryo to undergo a mitotic
process in which the end result being that up to 96 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, in our contemporary world that we live in, some could surmise and contend that this book
depicted society culminating to this point right now. As we progress throughout the society s
continuous developments, there is reasonable evidence to conclude that Huxley s dystopian novel was
his premonitions and envisioning that society would be more centric to our technologies and science,
as well as other factors, whilst losing sense of morality. One aspect of the novel that he would portray
over our contemporary society is the oversaturation of technology in the story. For example, this could
be showcased in this quote: ...appalled by the rushing emptiness of the night...so haggard and
distracted among the hastening clouds. (Huxley, p.91). This quote reveals to the reader that being an
observer of nature has some stigma connotated towards it. In essence, it is looked down upon, as the
quote the succeeded it, one of characters urged to turn on the radio, as it was detracting her from the
norms of her society. Another major aspect of technology, as mentioned previously, was cloning in
society. There were many experiments performed on the cloned embryos as well as attempting to
homologate them to the respective castes. For example, the deprivation of an embryo of a human at
seventy percent you got dwarfs. (Huxley, p.14). This is just one of the multitude of experimentations
that have been undergone in order to keep the caste system stable, and to possible

Science Applications International Corporation
Self Development Process at SAIC
Introduction Science Applications International Corporation has long enjoyed a very focused and
substantive self development program. However, the self development program for individual
employees is guided by management determination of where the employee best fits into the
organization. This suggests a mid level, management centric approach to employee self development.
The challenge for SAIC is to create a systems approach for self development that allows significant
latitude for the employee to chart their unique, self development strategy. SAIC does not allow the
employee to develop a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By and large, employees have stated that management is too focused on task execution and not
enough on developing subordinates. Access to management is difficult within SAIC. The hierarchical
structure of the company promotes a disconnected workforce. The consequences of SAIC leadership
not recognizing employee perceptions could prove to be severe. Employee turn over is high within
many sectors of SAIC. This trend will continue if SAIC leadership does not empower their employees
with more self determination in self development.
Desired Future State The ideal state for self determination in the area of self development is to allow
the individual employee maximum latitude in accessing, enrolling, and completing three to four self
development modules annually. Many of these courses take an hour to complete on line. SAIC
leadership should cover the hours used for each employee through general overhead dollars. Although
this would prove to be costly, it would save the company millions in the long run. As an alternative,
employees could take these classes on their own time, if the overhead costs proved too high. Most
employees would not think twice about bettering themselves by giving up four hours of time annually.
SAIC is on the verge of transitioning to become a learning organization. The sheer size of the
company is a major obstacle however. In 2013, SAIC will split into two distinct companies.

What Is The Conceptual Frameworks Of Both Philosophical...
In philosophical jurisprudence, legal positivism has made a niche for itself in defining itself in
opposition to a somewhat straight laced reading of natural law theory. Often the comparison is based
solely on an exceedingly strong and doctrinal interpretation of the two competing models. In this
paper I will examine and distinguish the conceptual frameworks of both philosophical positions,
detailing the strong and weak theses of natural law ; while in turn also examining the implications of
hard and soft legal positivism. The finer distinctions between these more tailored or qualified theses
need to be recognized in order to provoke a better understanding of the disagreement from a
conceptual perspective.
Natural Law Lex ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In an ancient, modern, and contemporary context, natural law has been identified in not only with
morality but also with the human ability to employ reason and to identify principles of rational
conduct. Rational conduct, by ancient thinkers was more often identified by what is Good (be that in
terms of divine eternal truths, or empirical notions of naturalistic perfection or completion) whereas
more modern variant of natural law may identify a rational principle based on other considerations
such as not only what is good, but what right, just, fair, reasonable or practical.
Mark Murphy credits Thomas Aquinas with the natural law maxim necessarily, law is a rational
standard for conduct (i.e. the strong thesis hard necessity). He argues that natural law is often falsely
recognized to be synonymous with a Latin maxim commonly associate with Cicero, St. Augustine, or
Thomas Aquinas is lex iniusta non est lex , or unjust law is not law . Subscribing to this maxim would
be a preposterous and gross interpretation of mainstream Thomist natural law. Although this phrase
may provoke reflection upon whether unjust laws ought to be considered valid, or truly law; this is
just an oversimplified version of the logical principle of non contradiction and often incorrectly
attributed to natural law, in the form of a straw man. There are obviously unjust laws that were spotted
throughout present time, country, and history. These laws may undoubtedly be considered as

Disadvantages Of Chain Drive Mechanism
2.1 Definition of chain drive mechanism
The basic rule of chain drive mechanism is to transmit power one shaft to another shaft at certain
center distance with the help of sprockets and chain links.
Chain drives maintain a positive speed ratio between driver and driven sprockets. The driver and
driven sprockets will rotate in the same direction on typical chain drives.
2.2 Definition of lever drive
Mechanism
The basic rule of the lever is a rigid bar resting on a pivot, used to move a heavy or firmly fixed load

Class 2: Resistance (or load) in the middle: the effort is applied on one side of the resistance and the
fulcrum is located on the other side, for example, a wheelbarrow, a nutcracker, a bottle opener or the
brake pedal of a car. Load arm is smaller than the effort arm. Mechanical advantage is always greater
than 1. It is also called force multiplier

Jimi Henderson Analysis
David Henderson, an African American poet, wrote the article Jimi Hendrix Deep Within the Blues
and Alive Onstage at Woodstock 25 Years After Death to show how Jimi Hendrix has continued to
influence many people after his untimely death. Additionally, Henderson claims that no other musician
has been able to replicate Hendrix s precise and rapid picking and his recognizance of sound and
noise. Henderson personally knew Hendrix as he previously wrote his book Scuse Me While I Kiss
The Sky to express his opinion on popular black music at the time and as a promise he made to
Hendrix at a nightclub in Manhattan in 1969. It is impossible to deny that Jimi Hendrix has not
continued to be one of the most influential music artists due to his unique way of play[ing] with
feedback, control[ing] it, and make[ing] it melodic. A skill that no other musical artist has been able to
replicate. Another important aspect of Hendrix s life ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, many modern musicians have paid homage to Hendrix by performing covers of his songs.
Examples include when the Red Hot Chili Peppers performed Fire and when Living Colour performed
Crosstown Traffic in their tribute album. Jimi Hendrix has even had some influence over the rap genre
with well known rapper, Future naming his second album HNDRXX. Henderson also states that to
listen to Hendrix today is constantly to be reminded of his gifts. Hendrix is highly regarded as one of
the best guitarist in history even though his musical career only spanned four years. With his
psychedelic inspired riffs, improvisational ability and his ability to range between pure blues and
avant garde jazz forms it is no surprise that he is often referred to as a virtuoso artist on

  • 2. Chinese Foreign Policy And Its Effect On The Regional... The general consensus among scholars concludes that China is assertive (Chen, Pu Johnston, 2014, 176). The assertive conduct of China can have an impact on the regional order and stability in South China Sea. The scholars have different views on the assertiveness of Chinese foreign policy (Chen et al., 2014, 176). The argument in favour of implementing assertive foreign policy affirms that China has good intentions regarding the South China Sea (Chen et al., 2014, 181). China is required to have an assertive conduct because a moderate approach would not bring regional stability (Fangyin, 2016, 877). The opposing argument on assertive foreign policy is concerned with the aggressive and provocative behaviour of China (Chen et al., 2014, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... China holds historic rights to the South China Sea through its nine dash line in most of the contested waterways in the region where it can extract resources (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 77 78). The maritime claims and sovereign claims of China in the South China Sea through the nine dash line must comply with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 78). China had historic rights to the South China Sea through the nine dash line until it ratified the UNCLOS in 1996 (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 78). China is bound to follow the international law to defend its sovereign rights despite the tribunal in the Hague ruling in favour of the Philippines (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 81). The ruling of the tribunal in The Hague was hard on China (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 78). The arbitrary decision of the tribunal has brought China to a legal crossroads (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 82). The ruling has placed limitations to the maritime claims of China in the South China Sea (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 80). The maritime claims of China to water and airspace in the South China Sea was declared invalid under international law (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 76). China cannot legally continue to declare military zones in the water or airspace around the reefs it occupies, nor can it do so more than 12 nautical miles from the rocks it controls (Rapp Hooper, 2016, 80). • 3. Student Apathy In Education The Problem Because kids come from different cultural and economic backgrounds, it is difficult to engage all students 100% of the time. Furthermore, many students, to help their parents financially, work after school or misses school entirely to take care of their siblings while Mom and Dad work many parents cannot afford daycare. Some students are homeless, living on the street or with relatives for a week or two at a time. Moreover, our refugee students (from war torn countries) suffer from both Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and anxiety caused by the process of acculturation. Students who have normal home lives may suffer abuse, neglect, and may have family addicted to drugs and alcohol. Stress and anxiety levels are at an all time high for today s youth; therefore, it is not surprising that they are apathetic about learning. While this general apathy in education has increased rapidly over the last few years, there is good news. We already have the remedy and it costs nothing. De Lay (2014), suggests that student apathy is a by product of mediocre teaching and the absence of a learning purpose. At its best, the current educational system is archaic. As a result, students are taught to think in a linear fashion that is wholly unlike the world in which they live (Robinson, 2010). Educational practices brought into the 21 century will encourage students to feel the excitement of learning. Not only is it important for students to become lifelong learners, but ... • 4. Indian and European Conflict in the New World Essay Indian and European Conflict in the New World Since 1492 to late into the17th the century there was perpetual struggle between the power hungry Europeans and the natives in the New World. Pitted against each other, the Dutch, English, French, Spaniards, and Indians struggled to maintain control of what they viewed as rightfully theirs. The English, were struggling to settle on the eastern coast and had no use and respect for the Indians or their land and way of life. At first maintaining a tentative relationship, the English, in the case of the Quakers and Puritans, soon realized that the Indians had very little to offer and were an obstacle on the path of their progress. Spain was primarily interested in missionary activities and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Nash describes, Penn believed the land belonged to the Indians, and the colonists must purchase it from the natives before settling it, and imposed a ban on the sale of alcohol. The land Penn s colony inhabited had comparatively few Indians, but this was subsequently beneficial because there was less of a chance for rivalry and competition. As long as Penn played an active roll in the happenings of his colony, there was little conflict or cause for complaint by both the settlers and the Indians. After 1712 however, as Nash has pointed out, Penn had little role in the affairs of Pennsylvania. In 1710 Swiss and German settlers arrived, whom did not share Penn s and the Quaker s pacifistic attitude, and who s land hunger and disdain for the Indians undermined the Quaker attitude of trust and love for the natives. Nash pg.98 These new settlers came to the New World to escape the oppression of their homeland, Eventually settling in Philadelphia. • 5. American Realist Movement HAS THE AMERICAN REALIST MOVEMENT LEFT ANY SUBSTANTIAL MARK ON JURISPRUDENTIAL THOUGHT? We must approach this question in consideration of the fact that the American Realist movement never purported to formulate a complete theory of law which could stand alone to tell us what law is. Instead, the basis was that official conduct in dispute settlement in all kinds of dispute was the focal point for the analysis of the law s impact, facilitating the ability to make legal predictions based on expected official action. I think that to measure the impact of this type of thinking on jurisprudential thought, we need to keep in mind how it seeks to differ from other theory. There are quotations that encompass Realism s ideals very well. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even Hart himself admits that, ‘at the fringe of . (law), we should welcome the rule sceptic. However he masks this with the ‘unquestionably rule governed operations over the vast, central areas of the law. Most positivists will admit that judicial discretion is inevitable in hard cases, and that decisions of the common law are posited in the courts, but the important thing for the realist is that law in it s entirety is a shoreless world of uncertainty. For me, the realist ideal is a tool whereby we can consider decisions throughout the vast central areas of law that Hart suggests, more than we could from a positivist or natural law stance. The reason is that if what the realists say is credible, we must accept that in some or all central cases, a judge can pick from a number of precedents as discussed, in order to find the one that best fits his predetermined and subjective answer. However, view this from the positivist outlook, and the whole process fits together nicely. The judge has simply applied a posited rule and achieved the right outcome subject to a rule of recognition. For both the realist and the positivist, the decision is law. The difference though, is that realism allows us to think about the moral dilemmas within the adjudication, whilst positivism does not need to consider any moral accordance to rationalize its theory. Just considering the argument in this way, it becomes clear that the realist approach could certainly be said to have more practical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Peripheral Nerve Complications The incidence of hoarseness was 11% after PACU discharge and lasted a mean of 2 days. The etiology of these symptoms was not formally established. It is possible that symptoms were due to prolonged block of the phrenic and recurrent laryngeal nerves. (Liu et al, 2010). Borgeat et al 2001, in a prospective study of ISB using a nerve stimulator concluded that one patient with Marfan disease (0.2%) suffered pneumothorax. 0.2%of cases had episode of central nervous system toxicity in the form of incoherent speech. Aspiration of blood was encountered in 0.5%of patients but no hematoma was subsequently observed. Nerve injury after brachial plexus anesthesia varied from 0 to more than 5%. (Borgeat et al, 2001). Peripheral nerve complications are generally directly attributed to the performance of the block itself, but this concept was challenged by Selander et al 1979, who indicated that other factors may be responsible as well. (Selander et al, 1979). In 1974 Ward reported an incidence of 3% of symptomatic pneumothorax after ISB by paraesthesia blind technique. The school policy should entail strategies to implement the reach and teach method to minimize some of the on going distractions in the school environment. School discipline continues to rise in many counties due to the lack of self discipline. In order for us to be able to reach and teach students, we as adults must be able to communicate with each other without looking at the titles. Subsequently, we need to accept ideas and focus on the main goals instead of contending with each other. Working together to reach and teach is a great effort to move forward. The purpose of teacher tenure is to protect teachers from being fired for political or personal reasons. It also prevents school districts from eliminating experienced teachers in favor of less expensive teachers. The fundamental problem with teacher tenure is that it is given to a teacher after only one year on the job and requires little to no additional effort. The increased job security breeds complacency in many teachers who are teaching only to collect a paycheck. There is a need for teacher tenure but the program must be drastically reformed. What is Tenure? Tenure is a policy that basically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since salary is determined by the amount of experience, administrations could maximize a payroll budget by cutting out the more experienced teachers in favor of less expensive, inexperienced teachers. Another great thing about tenure is that it allows teachers to have a teaching style that may conflict with the style of the administration. Without tenure, teachers could possibly become clones. Each one the same as the other without an ounce of originality, because many would worry that originality could cost them their jobs. Students need creativity in the classroom since each one has a unique learning style. Tenure allows teachers to approach subject matter in a way they feel will be the most effective for their students. Tenure also allows teachers the protection needed to challenge administration. This way, teachers can act on the behalf of students or other faculty that have received unfair treatment. With tenure, a teacher can go out on a limb and stand up for what he or she thinks is right without the fear of termination. Back in the days before tenure, it was impossible for a teacher, mainly women, to have any kind of social life outside of work. If anything they did was considered questionable and observed by a superior or parent, they could be dismissed from their position as a teacher. Teacher tenure was a much needed hero for many scrutinized teachers. Breeding Complacency The basic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Literary Analysis Of Stephen King s Why We Crave Horror Why is horror a necessity to human life? Why, when something horrible has taken place people want to know all the gruesome details? Why is it that we all love packing into a movie theater to watch innocent people be lynched and destroyed? In his essay Why We Crave Horror Stephen King rightfully claims he has the answers to these troubling questions. He brilliantly states that humans crave horror to face our fears, to regain a sense of normality, and have a little fun. King s first great reason why we love horror is to prove we are not scared. King explains this by comparing horror movies/stories to a roller coaster. At the beginning of his essay, he states that we watch horror To show that we can, that we are not afraid, that we can ride the roller coaster (King, Why We Crave 1). This a great comparison, because we can all relate to a situation like this. Horror might not be our favorite thing to read or watch, but we do it to show we are brave enough to take it on. Who would want to read about women being cut up and destroyed like in the short story Strawberry Spring . For example, near the beginning of the narrator s encounter, a junior named John Dancey happened upon a dead girl lying in a shadowy corner of the Animal Sciences parking lot (King, Strawberry Spring 2). We try to avoid our worst fear of death, but when the time comes we will read about it, because we can not look like a coward. We are Daring the nightmare (King, Why We Crave 1) just to prove we have the guts. Another reason why we crave horror is that we reestablish our feelings of essential normality (King, Why We Crave 1). Let s say someone is having a horrible day, and feeling very depressed or down about themselves. Well, reading a horror story like Strawberry Spring will cheer that individual up. This is because we start to feel like We are still light years away from true ugliness (King, Why We Crave 1). For example, at the end of the short story the narrator starts to realize he is the killer of all the horrible murders, and didn t even know. The narrator says things like The lovely creeping fog and Such an ugly word trunk and wondering why in the world I should be afraid to open it. We start to feel ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 20. Importance Of Cerebral Circulation Cerebral Circulation A constant flow of blood to the brain is vital to its proper functioning. Blood supplies the brain with oxygen and to perform maximally the brain requires about 25% of the body s oxygen (Webb, 2016). Lack of oxygen for a prolonged period results in cell death causing irreversible damage to the brain. Two paired arteries, four total, supply the vital source of blood to the brain and spinal cord. Arterial Structures Blood supply to the brain is divided between the internal carotid arteries (ICA) and the vertebral arteries. As stated in Cippola s text, the right and left ICA from the bifurcations of the common carotid arteries and the ICA itself also split in the anterior and middle cerebral arteries. Its primary function is to supply blood to the cerebrum. The vertebral arteries originate from the subclavian artery and then join distally to form the basilar artery , (Cipolla, 2009). The basilar artery later bifurcates into two posterior cerebral arteries , these arteries supply the inferolateral surface of the temporal lobe and the lateral and medial surfaces of the occipital lobe, (Webb, 2016). While the ICA mainly provides blood to the cerebrum, the vertebral arteries are the primary supply to brain stem and cerebellum. The ICA and the vertebral arteries join together to form what is known as the Circle of Willis. Circle of Willis The Circle of Willis is also known as the circulus arteriosus. This level can be imbalanced in excess or a deficit, but in a normal functioning body, the levels will return back to normal quickly by influence of the pancreas. The pancreas contains alpha and beta cells that are responsible for secreting glucagon and insulin, respectively[11]. Of interest to the pathophysiology of diabetes, is the role insulin plays in the regulation of blood glucose. When glucose levels in the blood are elevated, insulin is secreted from the pancreas and is circulated throughout the blood stream. Insulin lowers blood glucose by enhancing transportation of glucose across cell membranes, especially muscle and fat cells[11]. Also, insulin is responsible for inhibiting the breakdown of glycogen to glucose as well as the conversion of amino acids and fats into glucose to help lower blood glucose levels[11]. At the cellular level, insulin activates its receptor, which starts the cascade eventually leading to increased glucose uptake. (Lloyd Jones Lewis, 2014) The Industrial Revolution (1) transformed England from an agricultural to an industrial society where the machine had replaced manual labor. This may have led to the rise of mass unemployment and the exodus of workers from villages to cities in search of economic opportunities to survive. This also accounts for the increasing number of slums along the Thames River and the exploitation of women and children at the factories for extremely low wages. (Calmon, 1994) The Industrial ... They were not only used as machines by their employers, but were also victimized by them. The working class s exploitation stemmed solely from materialistic purposes, which resulted in a series of destructions such as the transformation of innocent characters into evil ones. Photography is not just about taking simple photographs. Professional photographers need to understand the concept of what makes the best photographs. Photographers must use lighting, different equipment, different types of photographs, and specific subject matter to create unique photographs as well as how to finish and edit them. The beginning of photography was in 1826, when Nicephore Niepce produced the first permanent photograph using a camera obscura. Three years later in 1829, Louis Daguerre joined partnership with Nicephore Niepce ( Ted s Photographics The Fundamental Principles of Photography Explained. ). In 1839, years after the death of Nicephore Niepce, Louis Daguerre became the first photographer to use silver iodide coated plates and a small box to take a photograph (Careers in Focus 101). Motion photographs were made in 1877 using a series of still photographs to create the illusion of motion. In 1889, Thomas Edison developed the first single unit motion picture camera; standards that are still used today (Careers in Focus, 25). Many professional photographers use different type of equipment: cameras, lenses, and accessories. Hip hop music was created out of rap music. Rap has been around since the 1970s. It was originally used as a way for inner city African American youths to voice their daily struggles. Most rap songs had a simple beat with words spoken to the rhythm of the beat. These songs were usually upbeat even when the subject matter was serious. There was the impression or hope that things will get better. Soon, corporate record labels started to repackage rap music as it gained in popularity. The business minded executives were looking to create a wider appeal by erasing hip hop s historic function. Hip hop ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The new music was labeled hip hop. Record companies seek out controversial artists that draw attention and free publicity in the media. Female artists are marketed as sex symbols. If they aren t, their careers are short lived. They may speak about equality between the sexes in their songs; they are still sexualized in a negative way in the media. They are disrespected and often referred to as bitch or ho . Exotic dancing is glamorized. Videos of half naked women dancing played on mainstream music networks has made today s youth feel that this behavior is acceptable. One of the most notable dystopian novels, it calls for a reader to conceptualize a world, in which society and science are synonymous with each other, history had faded far into obscurity, and Henry Ford, the creator of the assembly line, becomes a deity to many uniformed individuals. The book was about how humans are no longer created by the conventional means of mating, rather artificially, through the process of separating the ovaries and the sperm cells, and utilizing certain embryos in a biological process called Bokanovskification, the act of stimulating an embryo to undergo a mitotic process in which the end result being that up to 96 ... As we progress throughout the society s continuous developments, there is reasonable evidence to conclude that Huxley s dystopian novel was his premonitions and envisioning that society would be more centric to our technologies and science, as well as other factors, whilst losing sense of morality. One aspect of the novel that he would portray over our contemporary society is the oversaturation of technology in the story. For example, this could be showcased in this quote: ...appalled by the rushing emptiness of the night...so haggard and distracted among the hastening clouds. (Huxley, p.91). This quote reveals to the reader that being an observer of nature has some stigma connotated towards it. In essence, it is looked down upon, as the quote the succeeded it, one of characters urged to turn on the radio, as it was detracting her from the norms of her society. Another major aspect of technology, as mentioned previously, was cloning in society. There were many experiments performed on the cloned embryos as well as attempting to homologate them to the respective castes. For example, the deprivation of an embryo of a human at seventy percent you got dwarfs. (Huxley, p.14). Organizational Change Proposal Essay examples Organizational Change Proposal Science Applications International Corporation Self Development Process at SAIC Introduction Science Applications International Corporation has long enjoyed a very focused and substantive self development program. However, the self development program for individual employees is guided by management determination of where the employee best fits into the organization. This suggests a mid level, management centric approach to employee self development. By and large, employees have stated that management is too focused on task execution and not enough on developing subordinates. Access to management is difficult within SAIC. The hierarchical structure of the company promotes a disconnected workforce. The consequences of SAIC leadership not recognizing employee perceptions could prove to be severe. Employee turn over is high within many sectors of SAIC. This trend will continue if SAIC leadership does not empower their employees with more self determination in self development. Desired Future State The ideal state for self determination in the area of self development is to allow the individual employee maximum latitude in accessing, enrolling, and completing three to four self development modules annually. Many of these courses take an hour to complete on line. SAIC leadership should cover the hours used for each employee through general overhead dollars. Although this would prove to be costly, it would save the company millions in the long run. As an alternative, employees could take these classes on their own time, if the overhead costs proved too high. Most employees would not think twice about bettering themselves by giving up four hours of time annually. SAIC is on the verge of transitioning to become a learning organization. The sheer size of the company is a major obstacle however. In 2013, SAIC will split into two distinct companies. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. What Is The Conceptual Frameworks Of Both Philosophical... In philosophical jurisprudence, legal positivism has made a niche for itself in defining itself in opposition to a somewhat straight laced reading of natural law theory. Often the comparison is based solely on an exceedingly strong and doctrinal interpretation of the two competing models. In this paper I will examine and distinguish the conceptual frameworks of both philosophical positions, detailing the strong and weak theses of natural law ; while in turn also examining the implications of hard and soft legal positivism. The finer distinctions between these more tailored or qualified theses need to be recognized in order to provoke a better understanding of the disagreement from a conceptual perspective. In an ancient, modern, and contemporary context, natural law has been identified in not only with morality but also with the human ability to employ reason and to identify principles of rational conduct. Rational conduct, by ancient thinkers was more often identified by what is Good (be that in terms of divine eternal truths, or empirical notions of naturalistic perfection or completion) whereas more modern variant of natural law may identify a rational principle based on other considerations such as not only what is good, but what right, just, fair, reasonable or practical. Mark Murphy credits Thomas Aquinas with the natural law maxim necessarily, law is a rational standard for conduct (i.e. the strong thesis hard necessity). He argues that natural law is often falsely recognized to be synonymous with a Latin maxim commonly associate with Cicero, St. Augustine, or Thomas Aquinas is lex iniusta non est lex , or unjust law is not law . Subscribing to this maxim would be a preposterous and gross interpretation of mainstream Thomist natural law. Although this phrase may provoke reflection upon whether unjust laws ought to be considered valid, or truly law; this is just an oversimplified version of the logical principle of non contradiction and often incorrectly attributed to natural law, in the form of a straw man.
