In The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath there were many prominent female characters that
Esther came into contact with that had an affect on her life. The individual women
all behaved quite differently and gave Esther a different, and at times confusing,
sense of what it was to be a woman. They spanned from Doreen, the sensual and
experienced friend who had little concern with conforming to rules, to Mrs. Willard,
the stereotypical housewife who willingly became a floormat to be walked all over
by her husband. Throughout the novel, Esther compared herself to these different
women and often found that she didn t fit in with any of them. She felt as if she
must become a certain type of woman but wasn t attracted to the lifestyles of any
of the women that she met, making it hard for her to find her own identity. The
restrictions that were placed on Esther as a woman and the ways in which she was
expected to conform to society fueled her depression and made it hard for her to
discover and accept her identity. The novel began with the reader being introduced
to Doreen which was interesting seeing as though she was on one of the far ends of

An experience I feel fortunate to have had is the Nigerian education system. As a
result of my journey through the flawed but wholesome education system, I have
developed many skills at such a young age. I have learned to take initiative in my
classes, because, a common tradition in Nigerian schools is for teachers to test
students on topics not covered and justify those actions by giving students a scheme
of work, which is essentially a list of topics to be covered in the schoolyear. Going
through this system, I have learned to befriend older students and ask them for

had it easy as in their time both girls and boys were whipped on their rear but

I like to assume I am invincible, that nothing terrible will ever happen to me. It
wasn t until my life started to fall to pieces that I realized I had to try just as hard
as everyone else in this world. Having too much pride, or what some refer to as
tragic flaw, will almost definitely lead to one s downfall. Personally, my problem
was that my understanding of the law was simplistic. All the rules that responsible
citizens follow day in and day out somehow didn t apply to me. I could pick fights,
I could stay out past curfew, I could vandalize others property, and it would never

According to Ge and McVay research study findings, business complexity is
positively correlated with firm disclosure of material weaknesses. They hypothesized
that the firms with more complicated transactions likely to have greater chance for a
disconnect in the financial reporting process, and thus a material weakness (Ge et
al., 148). To measure business complexity, Ge and McVay used the number of
operating segments reported in the annual 10 K and the existence of foreign currency
exchange translation. Ge and McVay had two subgroups within their study: firms that
disclosed material weaknesses and a control group of 2003 Compustat firms who did
not report any material weaknesses.

In comparison to Doyle et al. study, Doyle and his colleagues hypothesized that the
complexity of the firm is a driver of internal control weaknesses (Doyle et al., 9). To
measure the business complexity of a firm, Doyle et al. used three measures to
include the number of special purpose entities, number of operating segments and the
existence of foreign currency adjustment. The findings of Doyle et al. were as
predicted. The three complexity measures were higher in firms that reported material
weaknesses in comparison to the 2003 Compustat firms, who did not report any
material weaknesses. This indicates that company complexity is positively correlated
to the disclosure of material misstatements.
Company Profitability
In relation to the Ge and McVay research study findings, company profitability is
negatively correlated with firm disclosure of material weaknesses. Ge and McVay
hypothesized that poorly performing firms simply might not be able to adequately
invest in proper internal controls (Ge et al., 151). This would result in a greater
chance of disclosing material weaknesses. In order to test their hypothesis, they used
two profitability metrics consisting of return on assets (ROA) and cash from
operations scaled by assets (CFO/A).

A Brief Look at Oscar Romero
Oscar Romero was an amazing man. Even though his life was cut short, he was
able to make an impact on the society that he lived in. Oscar Romero died a hero and
an advocate for the people of El Salvador, specifically the city of Agulaires. Leading
up to his death, Romero s spiritual journey evolved. Romerowas elected Archbishop
because few saw Romero as a threat. He was very intelligent, and would hardly take
his head out of a book. When Romero was elected he became good friends with
Rutilio Grande. Grande was a priest of Agularies. His mission was to help the poor.
After aggravating the government, Grande was killed, along with a young boy and
an older man. This event greatly affected Romero s spiritual journey. Romero stated,
I took off [Rutilio Grande s] socks, all soaked in blood. I helped prepare his body for
burial. When I heard the news, I felt as if I was being lifted into the air and
suddenly dropped to the ground. I was so bewildered I don t even know how I got
to the church. And now I wonder how I was able to get through everything that
everything that happened that day. I loved him. That s why I kept a small piece of
cloth with his blood on it. (Page 26).
