2. A zoom out has been used at the beginning of the music
video to introduce the first character. – Snoop Dog. It
begin with a medium close up and gradually zooms out into
a wide shot. The purpose of the zoom out is to show the
surroundings of the artist to set the scene. As you can
see, the environment is busy full of sweets and candy.
The second artist introduced (Katy Perry) has been
introduced through a long shot. She comes out of trees of
candy and looks around as if she is highly fascinated by
the amounts of candy that is around her. The long shot
enables viewers to see enlarged sweet wrappers, candy
floss representing blossom trees… it looks as if she is in
a dream.
A slight tilt has been used when the artist has laid on
the clouds. The tilt only happens for a small duration and
then switches to a medium close up. The tilt has been used
to make it increasingly clear of what the artist is laying
on – a large candy floss like cloud.

3. Different types of shots have been used to attract the two different types of
genders. The large cloud where Katy Perry is laying naked on is used to attract male
attention due to minimal exploitation of nudity. This has been done with the use of
a medium close up showing only the body and a small amount of the clouds. This
almost supports the male gaze in some sort of way because it is quite unexpected in
contrast to the rest of the music video.
On the other hand, close up shots of the face of Katy Perry and the props are more
directed at a female audience because the music video tends to be fantasy like which
is what would attract young female girls.

4. Mise en scene
The costumers that are worn by the artists involve sweets.
Katy Perry wears a colourful dress which has attachments
of a variety of sweets. There are loads of attachments of
lolly pops and cones. Snoop dog however, wears a
sophisticated suit that is covered in an assortment of
sweets.
The group of women at the end of the music video when
they are all dancing were wearing doughnuts on their chest
to represent bras or perhaps their breast. This is partly
sexualising the women by covering their feminine parts
discretely.
The lighting within the music video is vibrant due to the
use of sweets and the theme of the song. The song is
positive therefore, by making the music video in colour,
it compliments the lyrics. The colourful settings appears
to be in some sort of wonderland which reminds me of Alice
and the Wonderland and also a beach resort that appears at
the end of the music video.
Predominantly, the props consist of oversized sweets
literally in every shot. I believe that the reason for
using sweets as props is to compliment the lyrics of the
song. They have been used to represent Californian girls
as irresistible and addictive since that is the
connotations of sweets.

5. Editing
CGI – Computer generated imagery has been used quite fluently
for example a lifelike gingerbread man and gummy snakes. This
has deliberately been done to create a sense of realism and
dream like features. This is more of a child like wish with the
ginger bread man because there are brownie girls which is
linked to the lifestyle of young girls in America who sell
cookies. It is easily clear due to their outfits.
At the beginning of the music video, it displays a box which
has been altered through CGI. Whilst the box floats out of the
frame, it opens. The box alone is based on a board game called
‘CANDYFORNIA’ which simply is a combination between the board
game candy land and California. The design of the game candy
land appears to be in the same layout. As a summary, viewers
are able to identify that the game is California in the style
of beautiful irresistible candy.
The cuts within the music video are at a normal speeded pace.
This has been done to compliment the pace of the soundtrack.

6. Sound
The sound within the music video is all non diegetic.
The sound either comes from the soundtrack or specially
sound effects that were generated through the computer.
A glistening/ sparkling sound was used to represent the
item being valuable and amazing. Other than that, the
soundtrack is the main basis of the music video which
has been professionally altered to suit the music video.
