ANALYSIS
Thinking of you – Katy Perry
‘Thinking of you’ is a song by American singer and songwriter- Katy Perry, taken from her second album One of the
boys. The song is a pop ballad and features acoustic instruments.
A key convention of pop videos such as this is a performance element
. Thinking of you is narrative based and although she is playing a
character, there are clips of her performing the songs. Narrative
based videos are videos which focus on a storyline rather than
performance. Narative based video clearly show a plot and act
as a mini video telling a story. Katy shows her video as narrative
base as you see her get ready to go to what seems to be a funeral
and you see her lash backs to events with her boyfriend, showing
a story of their relationship.
Another common convention of pop videos
is using fade in and out effects, and quick cuts when editing, such as
in ‘that girl’ by mcfly. Thinking of you begins with a fade in to the first
shot, an abstract shot of her shoes. There are many jump cuts
throughout the music video and some match cuts.
Thinking of you- Katy Perry
Neutral colour schemes are also popular in pop videos and thinking of you follow through with this . Set in hr 1940’s,
a decade of pastels and neutrals in fashion, the mise en scene was very subdued and natural. The costumes include
dulled such (in he funeral shots and men's clothing), but are highkey in the flashed back which are supposed to be
happy flashbacks of her relationship. The neutral colour palette throughout consists of greys, browns and nudes. This
shows a very simplistic aura and almost takes away focus from the props and costumes to place more of our focus
on the story being presented.
I believe they use the flashbacks and high key lighting to almost bring us into Katy's mind so we can see what
she's been through and this makes us relate to her character more, I personally believe this relates to the release
from reality that some people search for through music videos and media.
Thinking of you – continued…
The mise en scene, regarding costume, is very scant, with
katy perry’s outfits in the present consisitng of 1940’s
underwear including grater belt and old ups. This could be a
technique used to portray katy as sexually desirabole, which
would popularise her as an artist female viewers in
particular but perhaps also as elegant.
Although in a risque costume, the camera is
very focused on sexualisation on a
moderate elevel due to focus oints of its
close ups on katy’s lips and eyes apposed
to her breast of legs. This could be due to
the tragic nature of her track and the video
needs to mirror that in its approach, so
despise her near-bare apprance, the filming
technqie and style creats an immpression of
elegnace and not promiscuous. It highlights
her femine features in a repsectable way.
References to sexualised costume and camerawork do appeal to auiences
and work to further popularise the video. The artist is marketted as being
attractive and appealing and so are naturally easier to eatch on film and
more pleasing to lisent to and follow. Laura Mulvey's female gaze was
used throughout this video as Katy is shown in a sexual way, personally I
believe this done to pace emphasis on her vulnerability rather than
promiscuity. This develops the plot shown throughout and brings depth to
Katy’s persona and attitude presented as this is different to her day to day
lie . I believe she is shown as vulnerable as she has gone through loss and
perhaps she feels torn apart and alone from the bereavement and this
creates a unique music video as women are typically objectified.
Poker face- lady gaga
The poker face video displays typical generic conventions
found in pop videos. Another convention is lady gaga being
the main focus in the video, as se is the main artist and is
performing throughout. Furthermore the artist is filmed in
several costumes and positions, consisting highly of close ups
to focus on the artist and wide shots to show the setting and in
this case the dancers. Two visual elements that suggest it’s a
pop video as there are dancers in the majority of shots.
The setting is set in a modern mansion in America, thus complimenting the
artists modern vibes. Also, the modern mansion suggests Gaga is very wealthy
which creates admirability. This fits in with the song for the video as it is called
poker face, I believe that the director took this literally. Perhaps she’s hiding
behind a façade in the media or maybe she’s got her wealth from being
someone she's not since she changes her sound after this song. I think the
genre does compliment the video as it fits in with the current trends in pop
culture such as luxury.
Poker face video contains a lot of split screens, this can be used to be a
representation of how society has a blurred view and different opinions on
celebrities and pop culture.
On the other hand this shot could suggest that a lot of people are
copycatting her style and that its hard to be an individual in pop culture.
Poker Face- Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga was filmed in several costumes to show her
wealth, the variety of costumes shows her luxury life style
and this can also help present her individuality. Each outfit
is very unique and not typically worn by celebrities
therefore she is presenting herself as her own style of
artist.
The low key lighting presents elements of mystery, as
this video was released when Gaga was an upcoming
artist she has created a lot of mystery and has used this
technique to attract and drag in her audience. The
elements of mystery in pop videos helps attract an
audience as they feel encaptured and want to find out
what the mystery is. This is a common technique used
for music videos as this encourages audience to wtach
to see the mystery in the video. This is done though
uise of lighting, close ups and extreme close up & fast
pace editting.
Thriller- Michael Jackson
This long shot is used to show tat after the small argument they both
had is influencing the way she looks at Michael.
The close ups are used in these two
contexts in different ways. The first
close up with the female character is
used at fairly at the beginning
where Michael is singing to her
down the dark alley.
The second close up is where it
shows the transformation of Michael
when he turns into a zombie, after
both of them being circled. It
highlights the change in his persona.
As this music video consists of narrative, a
majority of it follows a story , leaving not a lot
of solo instrumentals or lyrics to be illustrated
by Michael Jackson, never the less there are
some parts where Michael sings along.
Due to the fact
that the track
changes tempo
the video pace
follow this
aswell, all the
elenemts of the
video such as
camera
movemnet and
editting and
lighting
changes with
the tracks.
During this time, MJ was fairly young and appealed a lot to the
younger demographics. Due to this he kept most his videos
accessible and watchable to a large variety of ages, this meant
keeping the video and his music free from explicit language
and imagery, which is why the music video does not consist of
any intersexuality or voyeurism
The way characters are
positioned within a frame can ell
a lot about them, levels of
supremacy can be identified…
We can see that MJ and his
girlfriend are surrounded by
zombies. We can tell just by
looking at this shot that they are
powerless and alone.
