1. Comparison between My Chemical Romance ‘Famous Last Words’ and Katy Perry ‘California Girls’<br />From studying the use of mise en scene in the music video of ‘Famous Last Words’ by My Chemical Romance, it is clear that there are extreme differences between the Rock/Indie genre compared to pop videos such as Katy Perry’s ‘California Girls’. From deeply analysing the band My Chemical Romance, it was noticeable that rock music videos tend to be performance based and idolises the band as a group. This is displayed meaningfully through the use of mise en scene as the colours used are black and whites in both costume and make-up. This emphasises the idea that there is no need for bright colours and vivid imagery as the video is purely about the presence and emotions of the band. Similarly, the lighting shifts from high key to low key but the majority of the video is in low key lighting, only allowing a minor account of the setting to be taken into consideration. However, when used, the high key lighting only acts a spotlight onto the band suggesting that the dominance of the lyrics and perception they wish to convey is more important to their audience than artificial creativity. In contrast to this, Katy Perry’s ‘California Girls’ is primarily a concept video. The mise en scene used is based upon a ‘fantasy world’ in which everything is made up of bright neon colours and giant sweets. The sweets used within the video almost portray a child-like aspect which is likely to greatly appeal to a younger generation. Moreover, when analysing colour in further detail, the bright electric colours, even displayed through the artist’s eccentric blue wig, leave room for imagination. This allows the audience’s attention to be automatically directed on to the superficial visualisations. In terms of lighting, the whole video has been shot in a high key which stresses emphasis on the importance of the actions, rather than directing the video on to the performance of the artists involved. Lastly, the costume that is worn by Katy Perry and the other female dancers is extremely sexualised only covering up the specific necessities of their bodies. Snoop Dog is presented in a colourful suit which generally fits in to the make-belief world. Overall, it is clear to see that the use of mise en scene differs immensely between different genres of music and the type of music video (being concept, narrative or performance) that is used. <br />
