Groundwater and surface water in India are contaminated with metals and chemicals, and sanitation and hygiene services are almost non-existent. Half the population lacks access to toilets, and only a quarter have access to clean water. Women and children suffer most from water-borne diseases, and 1000 children under 5 die daily due to lack of access to clean water and sanitation. Proposed solutions include reducing pollution from factories, setting up water treatment plants, creating awareness programs about sanitation, and organizing clean drinking water programs for underserved populations.
