1. What is daylight?
Definition:
Combination of all direct and indirect
sunlight during daytime
Advantage:
▪ Reduce use of artificial lighting =>
reduce energy use
▪ Natural light => enhance wellbeing and
productivity
Disadvantage:
▪ Solar heat gain => increase cooling
demand => increase energy use
▪ Direct sunlight and Glare =>
uncomfortable

▪ Region: for TROPICAL climate => Should use shading!
▪ Site: sky exposure angle, obstructions
▪ Orientation: maximize Southern exposure, optimize Northern
exposure and minimize Eastern & Western exposure
▪ Building form: maximize perimeter to daylight
▪ Glazing ration: larger window area => more daylighting and
more heat gain. Size windows according to use and
orientation: keep reasonable minimum
▪ Glazing specification: triple glazing, tinted or reflective glass
can result in reduced daylight levels
▪ Window height and location: place windows high in the wall
of each floor => daylight to penetrate deeply into the interior
▪ Think about using light shelves, clerestories and using
properly skylights for daylighting with solar controls (size &
orientation)

Definition: Combination of all direct and indirect sunlight during daytime Advantage: ▪ Reduce use of artificial lighting => reduce energy use ▪ Natural light => enhance wellbeing and productivity Disadvantage: ▪ Solar heat gain => increase cooling demand => increase energy use ▪ Direct sunlight and Glare => uncomfortable

  • 6. 29 August 20206 ▪ Region: for TROPICAL climate => Should use shading! ▪ Site: sky exposure angle, obstructions ▪ Orientation: maximize Southern exposure, optimize Northern exposure and minimize Eastern & Western exposure ▪ Building form: maximize perimeter to daylight ▪ Glazing ration: larger window area => more daylighting and more heat gain. Size windows according to use and orientation: keep reasonable minimum ▪ Glazing specification: triple glazing, tinted or reflective glass can result in reduced daylight levels ▪ Window height and location: place windows high in the wall of each floor => daylight to penetrate deeply into the interior ▪ Think about using light shelves, clerestories and using properly skylights for daylighting with solar controls (size & orientation) 2.
