condition of mind that expresses satisfaction
with thermal environment.

sensation of thermal comfort:
▪ Air temperature [°C]
▪ Relative humidity [%]
▪ Air velocity [m/s]
▪ Mean radiant temperature [°C],
▪ Metabolic rate [met]
▪ Clothing index [clo]

1. What is Thermal Comfort
Energy released by metabolism depend on
muscular activity.
Metabolism is measured in Met
(1 Met = 58.15 W/m2 of body surface).
A normal adult has a surface area of 1.7 m2,
and a person in thermal comfort with an
activity level of 1 Met will thus have a heat
loss of approximately 100W.

ASHRAE Standard 55 (of USA) uses
the PMV model to set the
requirements for indoor thermal
conditions.
It requires that at least 80% of the
occupants be satisfied.

The adaptive model is based on the idea
that outdoor climate influences indoor
comfort because humans can adapt to
different temperatures during different
times of the year.
This method are also implemented in
ASHRAE Standard 55 and CEN
Standard: EN-16798

** Operative temperature: The temperature
sensed by people, takes into account not only
the temperature of the indoor air, but also the
temperature of the surfaces (floor, walls, ceiling
and windows).
