This document summarizes the first meetup of the Software Defined Networking Research Group (SDNRG) at the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) in Indonesia. The meetup provided an introduction to SDNRG, which aims to be a collaborative community for knowledge sharing about SDN technology. It discussed how SDNRG can help bridge the gap between network researchers and practitioners by providing opportunities for practitioners to get help understanding SDN and for researchers to get real-world use cases to inform their work. The goal is that this collaboration can help educated researchers build practical SDN solutions, practitioners architect better networks, and vendors propose the right SDN solutions to customers.

• There’s big gap between network research/edu
community and network practitioners community
• SDN technology is standing between these community
• They need each others
• Network practitioners need help for their problems
• Research/edu need real use case for their research

9. Bridging the gaps - Networkers
• SDN right now is hot topics in network practitioners
community
• But they cannot easily comprehend it
• Or even apply it in their place (Enterprise, SP/ISP/DC)
• Vendors has all its definition on SDN
• Make it harder to choose which tech to use
• Interoperability became big issue

10. Bridging the gaps - Research/Edu community
• Research edu community can help
• They have all the time they need
• Their testbed can fail without causing financial loss
• But they need real use case from practitioners
• SDN technology offer simpler and cheaper testbed
• Simulating entire campus network on single laptop

11. Bridging the gaps - Vendors & SI
• Vendors has its own SDN definitions
• But let’s throw all SDN definitions in this group
• Educate networkers & researcher about vendor tech
• Opportunity to interop between vendors
• Tech understanding leading to the sales lead
