OPNFV VIM integrates control and management components from upstream projects such as openstack, ONOS, ODL, etc. While huge success has been achieved in OPNFV for integration, automated build and deployment, the performance of VIM for controlling and managing virtual network has received little attention. This presentation is to address the VIM performance related to the network part of the infrastructure. Based on a Telco use case, we define performance metrics for SDN controller, northbound communication channels, and network provisioning. ONOSFW and OpenStack are two components for VIM. Test data is collected and analyzed for performance evaluation and suggestions for future improvements. China Unicom, ON.LAB and Huawei jointly define the use case and methodology, do analysis, and produce results.

Dr. Christos Kolias' Bio: Christos Kolias is a senior research scientist at Orange Silicon Valley (a subsidiary of Orange). Christos is a co-founder of the ETSI NFV group and had led the formation of ONF’s Wireless & Mobile working group. He has lectured on NFV and SDN at several events. Christos has more than 15 years of experience in networking, he is the originator of Virtual Output Queueing (VOQ) used in packet switching. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from UCLA.

It is now time for taking the next steps and to extend the colloaboration with upstream projects -- by opening up previously proprietary developments, by contributing code and other artifacts in order to create a ecosystem of NFV platforms, applications, and management/orchestration systems.
This talk shares some insights on how Red Hat and NEC are working together to foster collaboration in the NFV ecosystem by actively working with OpenStack and other upstream projects.
NEC has pioneered the adoption of Linux, KVM, Open vSwitch, and OpenStack for their mobile network core product line (virtualized EPC) and has gained significant experience through development work and deployments. NEC's extensions for high efficiency and high availability have led to contributions of new features to OpenStack, such as DPDK vSwitch control and CPU allocation features. For NEC, it is very important to have those features integrated into the mainstream code base for building reliable infrastructure systems.
Red Hat, one of main contributors to OpenStack, leads the development of those functions to meet NFV requirements in OpenStack, making critical and demanding applications run of top of open platforms. The presentation explains how NEC and Red Hat are integrating and optimizing Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform and NFV, along with contributions to open source communities, including OpenStack and Open Platform for NFV (OPNFV).

Telco operators are on journey to discover what virtualization means for the network. Markets have believed that NFV architecture elements: NFVI and VIM, hold the complete responsibility in providing virtualized networks with carrier grade properties.
Telco operators have reached to a conclusion that VNFs must take their fair share of responsibility to realize NFV goals while meeting carrier-grade behavior in the entire NFV architecture. While the trend moves on, Cloud native VNFs are emerging best citizens of the cloud. Thus communication from EMS to VNFM is blurred and eventually may disappear in the future. This requires better understanding of, and agreement over the role of VNFMs and EMS for VNFs.
This presentation describes the evolution of Distributed VNF management, Architectural design considerations and Use-case scenarios. The following proposal is based on a comprehensive study on evolving cloud native VNF management.
We are working on KVM enhancements for NFV as a collaborative development project in OPNFV, focusing on three key features: minimal Interrupt latency variation, inter-VM (Virtual Machine) communication, and fast live migration. In this presentation, we introduce and provide an update on the project, and how we plan to work with the upstream KVM project.
Minimal Interrupt latency variation is required for data plane VNFs to achieve deterministic execution. We present an update, demonstrating how hardware and software enhancements can help when reducing latency variations.
We evaluate and compare the options for inter-VM communication (e.g. ivshmem, vhost user, VMFUNC, etc.) in terms of performance, interface/API, usability/programing model, security, and maintenance.

Telco operators are on journey to discover what virtualization means for the network. Markets have believed that NFV architecture elements: NFVI and VIM, hold the complete responsibility in providing virtualized networks with carrier grade properties.
Telco operators have reached to a conclusion that VNFs must take their fair share of responsibility to realize NFV goals while meeting carrier-grade behavior in the entire NFV architecture. While the trend moves on, Cloud native VNFs are emerging best citizens of the cloud. Thus communication from EMS to VNFM is blurred and eventually may disappear in the future. This requires better understanding of, and agreement over the role of VNFMs and EMS for VNFs.
This presentation describes the evolution of Distributed VNF management, Architectural design considerations and Use-case scenarios. The following proposal is based on a comprehensive study on evolving cloud native VNF management.
We are working on KVM enhancements for NFV as a collaborative development project in OPNFV, focusing on three key features: minimal Interrupt latency variation, inter-VM (Virtual Machine) communication, and fast live migration. In this presentation, we introduce and provide an update on the project, and how we plan to work with the upstream KVM project.
Minimal Interrupt latency variation is required for data plane VNFs to achieve deterministic execution. We present an update, demonstrating how hardware and software enhancements can help when reducing latency variations.
We evaluate and compare the options for inter-VM communication (e.g. ivshmem, vhost user, VMFUNC, etc.) in terms of performance, interface/API, usability/programing model, security, and maintenance.

A leading Tier-1 Operator in APAC was evaluating new technologies to deliver enhanced managed network services for its Enterprise customers. With the growth in the demand for these services driven by the region’s growing consumption of web-based content and applications, the full-fledged telecommunications company embarked on an initiative to enhance the capacity and capabilities of its managed network services, with the aim of positioning itself as the best-in-class provider of next-generation cloud data center services.
As part of this transformation, the Operator identified NFV-based intelligent service orchestration, leveraging SDN and NFV technologies to pioneer the development of a portfolio of managed network services and invited vendors to participate in a Proof of Concept (PoC) to validate solutions that will be able to deliver these capabilities.
In response to the initiative, Anuta Networks in collaboration with the Tier-1 Operator, HPE and Logicalis, a leading IT solutions and managed services provider, conducted a PoC that saw the company validating the first end-to-end Managed Network Service Delivery using the IETF YANG Modeling Framework.
The PoC saw the deployment of Anuta Networks' NFV Orchestrator and VNF Lifecycle Manager - Anuta NCX - which provides carrier-grade NFV orchestration for instantiating, managing, and chaining Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) in accordance to IETF’s Management and Orchestration (MANO) guidelines. HPE provided the NFVI including Helion OpenStack, HP Compute, HPE Virtual Router (VRS) and HPE DCN SDN (OEM version of ALU Nuage VSP) controller.
First of its kind, the highly successful PoC demonstrated capabilities of Anuta Networks via its NCX solution to deliver carrier-grade NFV orchestration while dynamically and intelligently provisioning computing, storage and networking resources to enable the Tier 1 Operator to efficiently deliver next-generation cloud services to clients across the region.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
