Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch post-impressionist painter born in 1853 who produced some of the most famous and influential artworks in Western culture. He struggled with mental illness and poverty throughout his life. As a young man he worked briefly as an art dealer but found his calling in painting in the 1880s. His vivid use of color and emotional depictions of rural life came to define his signature style. He had a close relationship with his brother Theo, who financially supported him. Though unsuccessful in his lifetime, Van Gogh is now regarded as one of history's greatest artists, known for paintings like The Starry Night and Sunflowers. He died by suicide in 1890 at the young age of 37.
