Vincent van Gogh
GENERAL INFORMATION
Vincent van Gogh was born in 30 March 1853
and died in 29 July 1890. His nationality was
Dutch and he was an artist.
His reputation spread rapidly and he is today
recognized as one of the most important
painters of all time.
THE BEGINNING OF HIS
CAREER
At the age of 16, he engaged in the art trade for a time
at Goupilator & Company. In 1873, the company
relocated to London and later to Paris. After being
fired from his job in 1876, he returned to Amsterdam
to study theology. Van Gogh has been preaching for
about six months, showing particular interest in the
poverty of the people in the area. This is also the time
when he starts drawing small projects and probably
decides to get involved with art.
HIS TEACHERS AND HIS
INFLUENCES
In 1880, at the age of 27, he began to take his
first painting lessons with his teacher, Anthony
Moves, on the subjects of art. The following
years create works mainly influenced by the
painting of Jean François Miguel. In the winter
of 1885 he attended classes in academies of
Antwerp by Professor Eugene Siberdt.
HIS TECHNIQUES
It is heavily influenced by the impressionist movement
and in particular the use of color. Van Gogh himself
ranks more among post-Impressionist painters. He
often used impressionist techniques but also
developed a personal style, distinguished by the use
of complementary colors that the impressionists
avoid. During this period, he also devised a special
technique of brush swirls while his paintings were
dominated by vibrant colors such as yellow, green
and blue.
HIS DEATH
In July 1890, Van Gogh showed symptoms of
severe depression and finally shooted himself
in the chest on July 27 and died two days later.
