Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch post-impressionist painter known for his striking use of color and emotional power in works like The Potato Eaters. He worked as an art dealer early in his career before becoming a missionary and pastor, and began drawing people in the mining community he worked with in Belgium. Van Gogh taught himself to paint and developed his signature expressive style after moving to France in the 1880s and being exposed to Impressionism, with his works taking on brighter colors during his time in Arles.
