Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter born in 1853 in the Netherlands. He had an unstable early life working unsuccessfully in various jobs before deciding to become an artist in his late 20s. He studied art in Belgium and later moved to Paris where he was influenced by Impressionist painters. Van Gogh struggled with mental illness throughout his life and cut off part of his left ear lobe during a fit of madness. He later shot himself and died at the young age of 37, having sold only one painting during his lifetime. Though his career was brief, Van Gogh is now considered one of the most influential figures in the history of Western art for his expressive use of color and style.
