Background and objectives: Maximal strength assessment of knee extensors in older adults using elastic resistance bands have rarely been addressed even though resistance training using elastic bands have shown large effects on muscle strength in this group of people. We therefore aim to determine the validity of maximal knee extension strength assessment using elastic resistance bands in older women and men. Methods: Twenty-four participants (12 women and 12 men; 61.8 ± 6.0 years; 173.5 ± 10.2 cm; 71.9 ± 15.7 kg) were included. To assess maximal knee extension strength, participants performed one-repetition maximum testing of concentric knee extension using elastic resistance bands as well as a maximal concentric knee extension isokinetic test at 60°/s using a stationary isokinetic dynamometer. Concurrent validity of the two measurement techniques were assed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC 2.1 ), Pearson correlations (R), concordance correlations (R c) and by determining variations on an individual level using 95% limits of agreement (LoA) with isokinetic dynamometry measurement as the reference standard.

It presented three case studies: 1) A man with a heart defibrillator who received a SCS for back pain with no issues over 5 months. 2) A man with a pacemaker whose SCS trial failed to relieve leg pain but his pacemaker was unaffected. 3) A woman with a bladder stimulator and expanded SCS coverage for back and knee pain, with no device interference over several years. The study concluded that while more research is needed, these cases found no evidence that SCS caused failures of other implanted devices.

Introduction: Core training is often divided into the training approaches core endurance-, core stability- and core strength training. The aim of the study was to compare the association between core strength, core endurance and core stability testing 52 healthy males and females.
Methods: The core strength and endurance tests were tested isometric in hip flexion, extension and lateral flexion. The time maintaining the positions in the core endurance tests, maximal force output in the core strength tests and total displacement in the core stability tests were examined with electromyography measurement of the core muscles in randomized order.A prospective comparative study of three treatment
This study compared the effectiveness of three treatment modalities for idiopathic adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder: 1) conservative treatment including physical therapy, 2) intra-articular steroid injections plus physical therapy, and 3) arthroscopic capsular release plus physical therapy. The study found that arthroscopic capsular release resulted in significantly better improvement in external shoulder rotation compared to conservative treatment alone. However, overall functional outcomes as measured by a shoulder rating questionnaire were similar across groups. The study concluded that conservative treatment remains an effective first-line option for adhesive capsulitis, though arthroscopic release may provide faster recovery of external rotation.
11. Frozen shoulder and Hydroplasty
This study compared the effectiveness of hydroplasty versus intra-articular steroid injection for the treatment of idiopathic frozen shoulder. The study included 50 patients divided into two groups. The hydroplasty group showed significantly greater improvement in pain, shoulder function and range of motion compared to the steroid injection group at the 1 month and 3 month follow ups. Hydroplasty was found to be a more effective treatment for idiopathic frozen shoulder than intra-articular steroid injection alone.
Medical shockwaves for chronic low back pain - a case series
This case series examines the use of medical shockwave therapy for 10 patients with chronic low back pain. Shockwave therapy involves using focused acoustic pulses to target deep tissue. After 3 sessions of 1000 pulses each over 3 weeks, 8 of the 9 patients showed excellent improvement in pain levels, functional disability, and reduced need for pain medication that was maintained at the 12 week follow up. This positive preliminary outcome supports further investigation of shockwave therapy as a potential disease-modifying treatment for chronic low back pain.

An aquatic exercise program improved muscular strength, endurance, work and power in patients with multiple sclerosis. For the lower extremities, knee extensor peak torque significantly increased from pre- to mid-trial. Fatigue and work values improved significantly from pre- to post-trial. For the upper extremities, all force measurements significantly increased from pre- to post-trial. Power and total work values also improved significantly, though no significant change in fatigue was found. The results indicate aquatic exercise can induce positive changes to muscular functioning for individuals with multiple sclerosis.

The WBV groups underwent twice weekly sessions for 8 weeks that progressively increased in intensity. The study found that muscle strength significantly increased in the stable platform group compared to the control group. This study examined the effects of two pre-cooling methods - cold water immersion and ice slurry ingestion - on core temperature and ratings of perceived exertion during cycling interval sprints in hot and humid conditions, compared to a no pre-cooling control. Both pre-cooling methods lowered core temperature prior to exercise, but only cold water immersion prevented core temperature from rising as much during exercise. However, pre-cooling did not correlate with lower ratings of perceived exertion, as was hypothesized. Therefore, pre-cooling lowers core temperature but does not affect the rise in perceived exertion from exercise in the heat.

The study compared the effectiveness of electrical stimulation (ES) versus voluntary exercise (VE) for strengthening thigh musculature after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructive surgery. Twenty patients were randomly assigned to either an ES or VE group and completed a 3-week training regimen. Results showed that patients in the ES group achieved significantly higher percentages of knee extension and flexion torque compared to patients in the VE group, indicating ES was more effective for strengthening thigh muscles early in postoperative rehabilitation.

This was a poster made for the University of Michigan Rehabilitation Biomechanics laboratory. As the lead for this reliability study, I had to utilize research and leadership skills in order to complete the task on time. This study was examining the day-to-day and within-day reliability of oxygen consumption and heart rate measurements on healthy subjects.
Applied kinesiology (ak)
Applied Kinesiology uses manual muscle testing to evaluate the central nervous system's response to various stimuli. However, pre-cooling did not correlate with lower ratings of perceived exertion, as was hypothesized. Therefore, pre-cooling lowers core temperature but does not affect the rise in perceived exertion from exercise in the heat.

This study compared the outcomes of two rehabilitation protocols for patients with Achilles tendinopathy: an exercise training group that was allowed to continue tendon-loading activities like running and jumping, and an active rest group that was not allowed such activities during the first six weeks. Both groups followed the same progressive strengthening program after the initial period. The study found no significant differences in outcomes between the groups, as both showed significant improvements on patient-reported and functional measures from baseline to 12-month follow-up. The results suggest that continuing tendon-loading activity during rehabilitation, using a pain-monitoring model, does not have negative effects.
A randomized, controlled trial of fusion surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis
This randomized controlled trial compared decompression surgery plus fusion surgery (fusion group) to decompression surgery alone (decompression-alone group) for patients with lumbar spinal stenosis, with or without degenerative spondylolisthesis. 247 patients were randomly assigned to either the fusion group or decompression-alone group. The primary outcome was the Oswestry Disability Index score at 2 years, with no significant difference found between groups. Secondary outcomes and 5-year follow up results also showed no significant differences. The fusion group had longer hospitalization, more bleeding, and higher costs. Outcome measures including pain, stiffness, physical function, and quality of life were assessed at 4 and 12 weeks. At 4 weeks, cupping resulted in significantly greater improvements in pain, physical function, and quality of life scores compared to the control group. Many benefits were still present at 12 weeks, though some scores were no longer significantly different. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of passive stretching versus massage on preventing the symptoms of delayed onset muscle soreness in normal adults. STUDY DESIGN: Quasi- Experimental study design. SUBJECTS: 50subjects, with the age group of 18-21 years of both the genders were selected. INTERVENTION: Subjects were randomly divided into 2 groups (Group A& Group B), 25 subjects in Group A received passive stretching and 25 subjects in Group B received Massage after 3 hours of inducing DOMS. OUTCOME MEASURE: Pain, Elbow Range of Motion and swelling were assessed by Visual analogue scale, goniometer, Inch tape. RESULTS: Statistical analysis was done by using independent ‘t’ test and paired ‘t’ test which showed there is no statistical significant difference between Group A(Passive stretching) and Group B(Massage). CONCLUSION: The result of this study concludes that massage decreased the pain immediately after intervention and regained the Elbow Range of Motion at immediately at 24 hours, at 48 hours and 72 hours than passive stretching. But massage and passive stretching has equal effect on pain reduction at 24hours, 48 hours and 72 hours after intervention. Similarly they both have equal effect on Arm Circumference.

This study compared the effectiveness of passive stretching and massage on preventing symptoms of delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) in normal adults. 50 subjects performed eccentric exercises to induce DOMS in their biceps, then were randomly assigned to receive either passive stretching or massage. Pain, range of motion, and swelling were measured before and after the interventions, and at 24, 48, and 72 hours. Massage decreased pain immediately after more than stretching, and improved range of motion recovery at all timepoints compared to stretching. However, both interventions had equal effects on reducing pain at later timepoints and reducing swelling. The results show that massage may provide faster relief of DOMS symptoms than passive stretching.

Body composition analysis was performed on 67 participants to determine ratios of total fat, body fat, visceral fat, and total muscle. Spinal curvatures of the thoracic and lumbar regions were also measured. The results showed a significant positive correlation between total fat ratio and lumbar lordosis, as well as between visceral fat ratio and lumbar lordosis. Thoracic kyphosis was positively correlated with total fat ratio and visceral fat ratio. Total muscle ratio showed a negative correlation with lumbar lordosis and thoracic kyphosis. The ability to recreate computational results with minimal effort and actionable metrics provides a solid foundation for scientific research and software development. When people can replicate an analysis at the touch of a button using open-source software, open data, and methods to assess and compare proposals, it significantly eases verification of results, engagement with a diverse range of contributors, and progress. However, we have yet to fully achieve this; there are still many sociotechnical frictions.
Inspired by David Donoho's vision, this talk aims to revisit the three crucial pillars of frictionless reproducibility (data sharing, code sharing, and competitive challenges) with the perspective of deep software variability.
Our observation is that multiple layers — hardware, operating systems, third-party libraries, software versions, input data, compile-time options, and parameters — are subject to variability that exacerbates frictions but is also essential for achieving robust, generalizable results and fostering innovation. I will first review the literature, providing evidence of how the complex variability interactions across these layers affect qualitative and quantitative software properties, thereby complicating the reproduction and replication of scientific studies in various fields.
I will then present some software engineering and AI techniques that can support the strategic exploration of variability spaces. These include the use of abstractions and models (e.g., feature models), sampling strategies (e.g., uniform, random), cost-effective measurements (e.g., incremental build of software configurations), and dimensionality reduction methods (e.g., transfer learning, feature selection, software debloating).
I will finally argue that deep variability is both the problem and solution of frictionless reproducibility, calling the software science community to develop new methods and tools to manage variability and foster reproducibility in software systems.

The binding of cosmological structures by massless topological defects
Assuming spherical symmetry and weak field, it is shown that if one solves the Poisson equation or the Einstein field
equations sourced by a topological defect, i.e. a singularity of a very specific form, the result is a localized gravitational
field capable of driving flat rotation (i.e. Keplerian circular orbits at a constant speed for all radii) of test masses on a thin
spherical shell without any underlying mass. Moreover, a large-scale structure which exploits this solution by assembling
concentrically a number of such topological defects can establish a flat stellar or galactic rotation curve, and can also deflect
light in the same manner as an equipotential (isothermal) sphere. Thus, the need for dark matter or modified gravity theory is
mitigated, at least in part.

Abstract Background and objectives: Maximal strength assessment of knee extensors in older adults using elastic resistance bands have rarely been ddressed even though resistance training using elastic bands have shown large effects on muscle strength in this group of people. We therefore aim to determine the validity of maximal knee extension strength assessment using elastic resistance bands in older women and men. Methods: Twenty-four participants (12 women and 12 men; 61.8 ± 6.0 years; 173.5 ± 10.2 cm; 71.9 ± 15.7 kg) were included. To assess maximal knee extension strength, participants performed one-repetition maximum testing of concentric knee extension using elastic resistance bands as well as a maximal concentric knee extension isokinetic test at 60°/s using a stationary isokinetic dynamometer. Concurrent validity of the two measurement techniques were assed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC2.1), Pearson correlations (R), concordance correlations (Rc) and by determining variations on an individual level using 95% limits of agreement (LoA) with isokinetic dynamometry measurement as the reference standard.
