Hydroelectricity is a renewable energy source that generates electricity through hydropower by harnessing the gravitational force of falling or flowing water. It accounts for 16% of global electricity production. Hydropower is produced in 150 countries, with large hydroelectric dams over 10 GW located in China, Brazil/Paraguay, and Venezuela. Hydroelectricity has advantages but can also negatively impact ecosystems and contribute to methane emissions from reservoirs. The Narmada Bachao Andolan is a social movement opposed to large dams being constructed on the Narmada River in India due to concerns over displacement of people and environmental impacts.
