Shirley Temple Timeline
Character: Shirley Temple
Chronological/Timeline
Hook:
(Sing and dance around to Animal Crackers in My Soup )
As you can see there, that was one of the many songs I performed as young child. I was an actress
during the Great Depression, so with my cute little curls and abundance of joy, I made many people
very happy, so I guess you could call me the child star of my time.
Background info (birthplace, birthdate, any relevant childhood info., relevant relationship info., etc.):
I was born on April 23, 1928, in Santa Monica, California. My mother and father were a banker and a
housewife with two older children. My father being George Francis Temple, and my mother being
Gertrude Temple. My two older brothers were John Stanley Temple being the oldest of us all, and
George Francis Temple, Jr. being the second oldest.

Roosevelt referred to me as Little Miss Miracle for raising the public s morale during the hard times of
The Great Depression, even going so far as to say, As long as our country has Shirley Temple, we will
be all right. My song and dance routine to the tune On the Good Ship Lollipop in 1934 s Bright Eyes
earned me a special Academy Award, for Outstanding Personality of 1934. By 1940, I had 43 films
under my belt.

In 1945 I married actor John Agar Jr., when I was only 17 years old. This marriage consisted of my
first daughter. My first marriage later ended in a divorce in 1949. I then remarried the following year,
to California businessman Charles Alden Black, where I had two more children, a son and another
daughter. My Husband Charles would later die from complications of a bone marrow disease in 2005.
The same year I received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild.

Minority Report Research Paper
Minority Report
What s the best way to lower the homicide rate? By stopping homicides before they happen? At least
that s what the precrime police thought. Neuroin, a new drug introduced into society causes major
birth defects in children of moms that use it. Many did not survive, but three were saved. They had an
unwanted gift though. They could successfully predict future homicides by visions they receive. These
children, called precognitives or precogs, help the department of precrime to completely stop murders
in Washington D.C. for 6 years. The system was thought to be perfect, until a prevision was seen
predicting John Anderton, one of the heads of precrime, is predicted to kill someone he hasn t even
met yet. John takes off to try ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The security is higher, using a scan of the retina, which is more reliable than a fingerprint, a signature
or a pin number. The computers are highly advanced, no longer having touch screens, but projections
that can be maneuvered by hand motions. Cars that drive themselves in the far future seem much
safer, and more convenient. Minimal crashes will occur, and a person could do other things instead of
driving, say finishing a reaction paper... Although the precrime was a good idea, it proved to be
unreliable and manipulatable, the precrime police did decide to take it down in the end, returning to
more reasonable methods of fighting crime. With good always comes bad. I mean, how would we
define what is good without the evil? With the updated technologies came things like new, more
detrimental drugs, and attempts to get around these new technologies. The removing or replacing of
eyeballs is an example of a retaliation to these new technologies. But, you have to expect people will
find new ways to cheat the system and get around new securities. The good, new technology overrides
the bad things of society. Subsequently, I believe that the future society is better than

Analysis Of The Book Invisible Lakes
If the depth of Jay Gatsby s maniac love for Daisy was made known immediately, or the tension in
Madame Bovary didn t rise in such calculated fashion, or Moby Dick started with Captain Ahab s fatal
standoff with his white whale, some of literature s most beloved works would lose a great amount of
their clout. Organization is among the most potent tools in literature. Content always steals the
spotlight but the manner in which ideas are conveyed holds equal weight. Invisible Cities avoids the
traditional template of a logical or chronologically organized narrative. My essay Invisible Lakes is a
vain attempt to mimic the novel s eclectic organization. Italio Calvino utilizes a kaleidoscopic, narrow
point of view to describe Venice in Invisible Cities, just as I do in my essay Invisible Lakes, both to
achieve the goals of alluding to larger themes, developing more palpable scenes, and maintaining a
phantasmagoric motif, each with varying results.
Calvino aims to maintain a dream like lens throughout Invisible Cities. He was thinking of all these
things when he desired a city. Isidora, therefore, is the city of his dreams: with one difference. The
dreamed of city contained him as a young man; he arrives at Isidora in his old age. In the square there
is a wall where the old men sit and watch the young boy go by; he is seated in a row with them.
Desires are already memories. Page 8, Cities and Memories, 2

Compare And Contrast John Updike And Boys And Girls
After reading A P by John Updike and Alice Munro s Boys and Girls , a centralized theme arose. Each
story s protagonist demonstrates a unique internal struggle centered on the restrictions society places
upon them. Even though the short stories written by John Updike and Alice Munro are remarkably
different from each other, it is possible for a reader to interpret similarities between the two. A P is the
story of a nineteen year old boy, Sammy, who is fighting against the expectation to blindly accept the
social norms of society and follow the dull, routine life set before him. Sammy currently works as a
cashier at the local A P supermarket and describes the customers shopping within A P as sheep,
houseslaves and pigs being loaded into a chute. He yearns to be something more than a chain climbing
employee like his co worker, Stokesie, or his boss, Lengel, who haggles over cabbages and hides in
the manager s office all day.
When three young teenage girls enter the store wearing nothing but bathing suits, things begin to
change for Sammy. Sammy takes notice of the actions of the girls; how they go against the normal
traffic flow of the supermarket and break the social rules of society with their attire. It is these
attributes that attract Sammy to them, as they represent freedom and escape from the life he finds
himself in. When Lengel approaches them and reprimands them for what they are wearing, Sammy
quits in the hopes of becoming the girls unsuspected hero.

James Barrie s Story Of Peter Pan
Since the manifestation of James Barrie s story of Peter Pan over one hundred years ago, there have
been numerous adaptations. The author Barrie also adapted his story as well on a few occasions in
many ways. In fact, Barrie was the first to plan a film scenario, however, his plan failed to be used for
the first film adaptation of Peter Pan in 1924 (Barrie, 2011). In this analysis, the criticism of Peter Pan
s movies will be separated in two ways, first, from the point of view that the film is an exact replica of
the novel and the other point of view is that the viewer considers the film as an autonomous piece with
different interpretations. I will first argue that Barrie s original text adapted by Walt Disney s version
is not in keeping with the darker, intricate original story however, the film is an autonomous piece of
art that successfully opens viewers to their personal interpretations.
I will then consider extra cinematic codes of the interpretations for James Barrie s story of Peter Pan
through the adaptation of the film, Finding Neverland, with focus on: language codes, visual codes,
non linguistic sound codes and cultural codes (McFarlane, 1996).
To further the analysis a comparison from the original historical text of, J.M Barrie s Peter Pan and
Lewis Carroll s Alice s Adventure in Wonderland that have been adapted to film I will outline the
similarities as well as the differences. Barrie s Peter Pan and Carroll s Alice s are both characters that

Omnivore s Dilemma By Michael Pollan

Book Review
Omnivore s Dilemma By Michael Pollan
Michael Pollan is the author of several New York Times bestseller books including the Omnivore s
Dilemma. He is a professor of journalism at UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. Michael
Pollan s perspective on food is that we should know what is in it and where it comes from, who grows
it and how. The theme of this book is the industrial revolution for food. Its purpose is to make
awareness that our food is getting its energy from our resources. Michael Pollan s goal with the
omnivore s dilemma was to shed light on the way we eat now by telling stories about how we ate then
and explaining the pros and cons of our change. He introduces his book about food ... Show more

Michael refers to the supermarket as a landscape where all species derived from the single crop of
corn. Michael tells a story about a corn field in Iowa where the farm had been passed down to the
family and was quiet successful back in the day. George s crop in inedible they are fed to livestock so
shipped to factories to be processed. His family survives from the income of his wife who works for a
social services agency. The supply of corn has greatly surpassed the demand and therefore alternative
decisions must be made as to where the corn will go which is why it is fed to cattle and other
livestock. This is Pollan s way of tracing the steps of the industrial food chain. Since corn is produced
so cheaply using synthetic nitrogen which creates a dependency on our fossil fuel resources rather
than our solar resource. The Feedlot method has produced more issues than solutions. Yes, it does
result in fattening cattle quicker which in term then produces faster meat but it results in manure that
is extremely high in concentration of phosphorous and nitrogen that cannot be used as fertilizer to
regenerate nutrients in the soil. If the soil cannot be regenerated cattle must be moved which leads to
medical problems, which were attempted to be solved using antibiotics but only increased antibiotic
resistant bacteria. These new practices benefit corporations that run them and produce easy and quick
cheap meat but Pollan warns that they come with repercussions. Some of those

To The Lighthouse Essay
Pause, reflect, and the reader may see at once the opposing yet relative perceptions made between life,
love, marriage and death in Virginia Woolf s To the Lighthouse. In this novel, Woolf seems to capture
perfectly the very essence of life, while conveying life s significance as communicated to the reader in
light tones of consciousness arranged with the play of visual imagery. That is, each character in the
novel plays an intrinsic role in that the individuality of other characters can be seen only through the
former s psyche. Moreover, every aspect of this novel plays a significant role in its creation. For
instance; the saturation of the present by the past, the atmospheres conjoining personalities and
separating them, and the moments ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was always true. He was incapable of untruth; never tampered with a fact; never altered a
disagreeable word to suit the pleasure or convenience of any mortal being, least of all of his own
children... (Woolf 8). This quality that Mr. Ramsay possesses, however positive or negative, is
juxtaposed with that of an opposing quality which is characterized in Mrs. Ramsay: But then again, it
was the other thing too not being able to tell him the truth, being afraid, for instance, about the
greenhouse roof and the expense it would be... (Woolf 45). To the Lighthouse, then, is really a story of
a struggle between two kinds of truth Mr. Ramsay s and Mrs. Ramsay s. For him, truth seems to be
concrete, factual; for her, truth seems to be one s endeavor toward truth. To further clarify this claim, I
will make reference to a point in the novel in which the reader is able to see just how different Mr. and
Mrs. Ramsay perceive life. It is when they are discussing their son Andrew, and what he might
accomplish in life: Oh scholarships! she said. Mr. Ramsay thought her foolish for saying that, about a
serious thing, like a scholarship. He should be very proud of Andrew if he got a scholarship, he said.
She would be just as proud of him if he didn t, she answered (Woolf 74). The differing
3 approaches of Mr. and Mrs. Ramsay, (whether perceived as right or wrong) present a choice between
the former and the latter; which is indeed a matter of preference; of

The Goals And Goals Of The Black Panther Party
Civil rights are something every person should have. It s the thing that allows people to think and act
freely, and have a healthy life. But for some time, African Americans didn t have civil rights. They
were considered less important and often hated so that people who just so happened to have brown
skin, had fewer opportunities in the U.S. But some people were willing to stand up against this notion
that African Americans didn t deserve civil rights. They began to become groups that banded together
to stop this inequality. One of these groups was the Black Panther party, an organization dedicated to
ending police brutality and improve the lives of African Americans.

It tired to solve issues in the black community. One of the ways they tried to end police brutality for
blacks is by having armed patrols follow the police in African American communities (BlackPast).
These patrols would wear leather coats and berets to show their military like force. These patrols
would act in civil disobedience to make the police. The party tried to end police brutality in other
ways to by listening in to police scanners to end violent encounters with African Americans
(Washington Post). There were several violent conflicts with the police that the Panthers got into. John
Frey, a member of the black panther party shot and killed a policeman during one of these conflicts,
and spent 15 years in prison after being convicted of manslaughter (History). The Party also did
several other programs to like free breakfast, schooling, and health clinics to improve the African
Americans lives. They also did an armed protest in the California Sacramento, at the California
statehouse (Britannica). This was a demonstration of civil rights, and the right to bear arms
(Engelbert). The Black Panther Party also relied on symbols and phrases so that the party and its
motives would stick in people s heads. The phrase Black Power was made to show the independence

The Complexity Of Sociological Concept Of Health And Illness
The complexity of sociological concept of health and illness is not easy to define and measure. As was
summarised by Nettleton (2013) and according to Blaxter (2010) the definition of health can be both
negative and positive. On the one hand there is a medical model of health, which tends to be negative
and it is based on body s ability to function and body s chemistry. This biomedical perspective
describes health as the absence of disease in measurable biological norm. On the other hand a positive
definition, which is linked to well being of individual, stated that health is a complete physical, mental
and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity , was established by World
Health Organisation (WHO) in 1948. Being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore care and treatment should be only delivered by trained medical specialist and health
professionals. Alternative and complementary medicine cannot challenge the dominance of
biomedicine. As was summarised by Barry (2011) study of Illich (1993) stated that there are also
harmful consequences of medical intervention. These implications of the power of medicine are
referred to the term of Iatrogenesis, which implicates that without the medical intervention no harm
would be done. Medical errors, negligence and adverse effect of drugs can affect patients health.
Furthermore in some cases health professionals sometimes neglect patients right to inform about their
health, which can play a major role in their process of recovery from illness. Illich (1993) also uses a
term of medicalization of life where medical professionals, pharmaceutical companies promote
sickness of society for their interest to gain power over society (ibid). Nettleton (2013) described
medical model in the way that it is only aiming to restore body from disease to the normal state of
being, free form any form or symptoms of disease. This matter is rather personal for individuals, what
is normal and what is not tends to be subjective. Furthermore according to Walsh (2004) the
biomedical model has been criticised and challenges since 1960 for only focusing on biological causes
of illness. The critique is based on fact that this model is neglecting the impact of environmental,
sociological and psychological aspects on health and illness. Famous study by McKeown (1979)
provides another criticism of medical science by questioning their validity. McKeown thesis stated
that growth of population in Western societies was mainly due to economic conditions, better nutrition
and improvements of personal hygiene rather than improvements of

Maybe an hour later
I have to find it for you, a gruff voice said.
My sight came back, diffused, dim dreamlike. A ghost drifted beside me in a billowy blouse, navy
breeches, stockings, and buckled boots. His hair long and loose and peacock blue was gathering a lace
of dust. He was blurred as ghosts often are, but his voice was clear.

away from the etched figures on the limestone wall when I heard a distant voice that was definitely
Bane s echoing around the mineshaft. Hurry up, girl.
I crept the rest of the way through and stumbled out into the stone space. I must have looked like a
dirty coal miner, but Bane was too interested in the Sade Stone to pay me much attention.
It s about time, he said.
Sorry, for the delay. The Stone s inside, I mumbled, handing him the flashlight.
He took several long strides, stopped, and eyed me suspiciously.
Breathe, I told myself. He s a man, not a monster.
Is this another one of your tricks?
No, I replied.
No, sir, he corrected.
Sir, I repeated.
He unscrewed the flashlight cap and dumped the pebbles into his hand. You re so done.
I turned to run, wondering if I d appear on a milk carton someday soon a blond kid, hands clasped
over my doughnut shaped mouth as a madman chased after me.
I reached the corridor with the low ceiling just as Bane rounded the corner. In seconds, my sneakers
crossed laces with his tennis shoes, and our combined forward momentum carried us through in a
tangle of elbows and knees and a sudden frenzy of flying rocks. I hit the mine floor rolling like a girl
shaped soccer ball.
Bane stopped me with a kick to the chest. He could have continued thumping me into Silly Putty, but

Laws Against Child Abuse
Child abuse has been a major problem in the United States for many years. Child abuse is the
physical, sexual, or emotional maltreatment or neglect of a child or children ( Definitions of Child
Abuse Neglect). One in five children, who are abused, die every single day as a result of child abuse,
with most of these children being under the age of four. Some people believe child abuse should not
be the government s problem because people have the right to do whatever they want with their
children, but these people do not understand the effect child abuse has on innocent children, therefore
why laws that protect children should be enforced regardless of the privacy and rights of the abusers
being violated.
The laws about child abuse are established in order to protect all of the children in the United States.
In New York laws require that any social service profession or school related profession, or health care
professions must report child abuse, even if they are suspicious. This law and all the other laws
pertaining to child abuse need to be more heavily enforced in order to protect children now and make
sure they are kept safe in the future. Laws against child abuse are of absolute necessity to stop those

Following the theory of impression management, I found that I would put on a sort of mask as I began

change myself to fit the needs of each patient I spoke with. For one person I was silly and cheerful but
for another I was quiet and patient. No two people are the same in the kind of friend they need. Unlike
friendships in everyday life, I was able to upkeep these facades since it was a short time span.
Furthermore, these friendships were able to be one sided, it was not important what I might need from
a friendship just what I could do to make these people s day slightly better even for a moment.
Similarly, the patients would try to show their best side whenever I was around. As one lady described
to me, the nurses have seen me at my worst, but that doesn t mean you have to . This brought me to
the realization that I was not doing a service to these people by pretending to be something I was not. I
decided to begin treating all the people the same and with the respect the deserve. Each person is
having a hard time and is being constantly analyzed, they did not need me for that. Once I began to act

Edward Taylor And Anne Bradstreet
Throughout this class we have read different types of literature from many different authors. Some of
the material I truly enjoyed and some of it not so much. I really enjoyed the Native American literature
that we started out with in the beginning of the semester. I think the Native Americans are beautiful
people who appreciated the land more than most. The Native Americans were smart people who used
short stories such as The Chief s Daughters and Coyote and Bear to warn their readers of dangers or
teach them moral lessons. I also enjoyed authors such as Edward Taylor, Anne Bradstreet, and Thomas
Paine. I did not like reading William Byrd s material, chiefly because he was rude and spoke nastily of
the Native Americans. It personally offended me that he thought their belief of afterlife to be gross and
sensual .
I have read material from many different authors and although I enjoyed most of them, I have to say
that my two favorites were Edward Taylor and Anne Bradstreet. Both of these authors are Puritans,
and it is easy to tell when reading their pieces. Puritans typically write in simple language, and always
refer to God. Edward Taylor created a powerful analogy in his piece, Upon a Spider Catching a Fly.
The analogy that he describes is an analogy between people and Satan. The spider represents the devil,
who is manipulative and wants to trap people in his web of sin. The wasp represents someone who is
strong in their faith and does not let themselves get trapped in

Graphic Design Of A Graphic Designer Essay
Graphic design is everywhere; it is a way of communicating through the use of type, space and image.
Graphic designers use numerous methods to create and combine words, symbols, and images, which
creates a visual representation of ideas and messages. A graphic designer may use a combination of
typography, visual arts and page layout techniques to produce a final result. William Morris and Joost
Schmidt have both used these techniques to produce astonishing pieces of graphic design, which are
going to be compared and contrasted throughout this essay. The 1923 legendary typographer and
graphic designer Joost Schmidt in Weimar, Germany created Bauhaus Exhibition Poster. The other
piece of design I have decided to analyse is a two page spread of the edition of works of Geoffrey
Chaucer. This was the Kelmscott press finest achievement; it was designed by William Morris and
illustrated by his friend Burne Jones. This was the most beautiful book of its day; it serves as a tribute
to Chaucer and to Morris himself. (Meggs, P., Purvis, A. 2006).
These design outcomes came from two very contrasting movements. The Arts and craft Movement
and the Bauhaus movement. The Arts and Crafts Movement was an international design movement
that thrived between 1800 and 1910. The main influence was writer and designer William Morris.
William Morris was one of the most influential designers of the Arts and crafts movement. He led the
way for the practice of producing and designing without the

African Americans and feminist groups reached most of their goals. It was a turning point as a new

Advantages And Differences Of Catholic School And Public...
In America today, Americans have progressively paid more attention to the schooling process, trying
harder to get the best education possible for their children. Catholic schools and Public schools both
have advantages and disadvantages. Today, parents choose whether they would like to have their child
in a public or private school. Both schools provide education and opportunities for students, but the
decision of where to go is based on preferences of the parents. As educational institutions, Catholic
Schools and Public schools are similar, yet different. The instructors in both Catholic and Public
schools have similar teaching skills, yet differences exist. Catholic school reputation is one of being
uptight and strict. The strictness of Catholic schools focuses on how long the uniform skirt is, having
the uniform shirt always tucked in, wearing the right ankle socks, and not wearing makeup. Catholic
schools discipline is not extreme. If a student becomes in trouble, the instructor would call the parents,
there is not detention. Catholic school is very conservative. Catholic schools have certain numbers of
students, so they are not exposed to different types of people. Catholic school held a high reputation
on how students should act in class. Being Catholic was very important in the school, and if not
Catholic the students would judge the non Catholic. Public school is opened to people with different
preferences. The open mindedness of Public schools allows students to

The Vision And Mission Statement To A Company Is As Important
The vision and mission statement to a company is as important as food and water to a person. It is all
about survival. Companies strive every day to satisfy customers, while making a a profit. Therefore,
management should not only write a mission and vision statement, but it should be one that is
communicated with clarity that reveals the company s present business and purpose as well as its
future. The purpose of this writing is to discuss the mission and vision statements of Southwest

However, the transition of Delta to Atlanta, Georgia created a shift in my traditional travel plans.
Subsequently, I have visited with most of the other airlines in the Memphis area. One day while
googling for a cheap last minute flight, I found an interesting deal entitled wanna getaway on the
Southwest Airlines website. Therefore, for the last few years, I have traveled with this airline.
A snapshot of Southwest s website is an understatement of the company s accomplishments. For
example, Thompson and Gamble (2010), revealed that Southwest Airlines lead the market for
domestic travel despite the profit losses from 1980 to 2009. Moreover, they share Southwest s original
marketing plans that superseded media ads. In 1971, this attention getting scheme was used to hire
ladies with the Raquel Welch look: the company hired long legend beauties with sparkling
personalities, dressed in hot pants and white boots. Their marketing strategies changed drastically
from 1970 to 1973, which was remarkable for that season. However, technology, Facebook, Twitter
and the internet allow society to scrutinize websites which include a vision and mission statements.
Southwest s vision statement is broad and generic, while there are some positives, there are some
shortcomings as well. It lacks a clear path as to the company s future; all airlines vision is to move
cargo: people and things. Nonetheless, it is feasible; it is

The use of an elevator is a common thing. Most Americans use the elevator without incident, and we
all know how to behave in one. For example, it is a norm that when you get into an elevator, if
someone is standing in one corner, you go to the other corner. You do NOT stand right next to them
and crowd them when the rest of the elevator is empty. Another norm would be that you face the doors
you do NOT keep your back to the door and stare at the other people in the elevator. So, think about
why these norms are in place and what purpose they serve (some hints would be to think about
personal space, our tolerance for strangers, etc).

I had an opportunity to meet the ELL teacher who is responsible for educating ELL students in the
district. She allowed me to observe her teaching a couple of students at Brighton Elementary School.
The teacher informed me that she teaches ELL students using Scholastic books and a Scholastic app.
Additionally, the scholastic app is usually used to help students replace missing words in a sentence,
assist students with pronunciation, punctuation, comprehension. While I was observing her class, the
students would click on a word and the computer would pronounce the word for them. This is a really
good way for students to learn how to pronounce words accurately. I also observed her using several
strategies to facilitate these students understanding of English as a second language, for instance, she
mentioned one strategy for capital letters you step on gas and another for periods you brake . Another
strategy that she uses when teaching them to write sentences is Mr. Space , which is the size of a
Popsicle stick, and it allows the students to put appropriate spaces between each of their words. The
students are required to take a test at the end of the year to measure their progress. Students are

He remembered the clean environment, trickling streams, proud trees, pristine forests, ferns and heaps

What happened here? Caroline asked.
For us to find out I guess.
They walked back to the main building and then up the front steps. When they pushed the door, it

One important thing that I learnt from this skill is that sometimes you might not need to speak a lot or
try to speak all the time, but the important thing is that you should try to see which actor shares the
same opinion as you and whether that actor is strong enough to act on your behalf. This was really
obvious in the activity of multilateral negotiations on negotiating intervention in a civil conflict where
I played Iraq. I found that Iraq shared a lot in common with the Arab states, especially Iran on the
Syrian issues. Balancing interests in the negotiation through the Arab countries helped Iraq protect its
interests. Without speaking much, but allying very well with Iran and balancing the interests with the
Arab states, it turned out that I gained the highest score in my group.
However, there was one thing I found quite unrealistic about this activity. That was the rule on
unanimous agreement. I do not think this can be applied in the real world situation. I think that it
would be better if we do not need to stick on this. The unanimous rule made some players concede too
much, and that did not reflect real international negotiations. The role play on Six party talks was both
fun and useful. This role play gave me a chance to practice more skills on negotiation and chairing.
This activity really showed the difficulties of negotiations on issues that are really critical to national
survival. The North Korean issue was very

History And Development Of Modern Operative Obstetrics Essay
Chapter 2 2.1 History of caesarean section and development of modern operative obstetrics The first
modern caesarean section was performed by German gynaecologist Ferdinand Adolf Kehrer in 1881.
(1) Probably the very first documented evidence of caesarean birth is a legal text dating to theera of
Hammurabi (1795 1750 BC), describing the birth of a male child pulled out of the womb of a
deceased woman (7). The name sectio caesarea was first used by the French obstetrician Guillimeau in
1598. At that time, the operation was used to deliver live babies from dead mothers (4). There are
three different explanations about the origin of the name of the operation. 1) In 715 BC, the King of
Rome, Numa Pompilius, codified the Roman laws. According to the law, it was forbidden to bury a
dead pregnant woman before the fetus was excised. If the child was alive, it was called a caeson . This
law, Lex Caesaris or Lex Caesarea, is assumed to be the origin for the name of the procedure cesarean
section (4, 7, 9). 2) It has also been stated, that Julius Caesar has been delivered by this method, and
gave the name for the operation. This is considered unlikely, because his mother is known to have
been alive during Julius Caesars adulthood. During his reign about 100 BC no woman is known to
have survived the operation. 3) A third explanation is that the name is simply derived from the Latin
verb caedare, to cut. The word section is also derived from the latin verb secare, to cut (4).

Technology has given anyone with basic computer knowledge the ability to create multimodal blended
structure slide decks, and then distribute this media throughout the internet. I utilized The Non
Designer s Design Book because it emphasizes the four basic principles of good visual design, which
can easily be applied to create slide based presentations. These four principles include contrast,
repetition, alignment and proximity. The proper implementation of the principles are key to the
creation of an effective slideshow presentation. Another influential reading from our course which I
am able to apply to my project is Visual Language for Designers. The main points I take from this
reading, which are applicable to this project are the idea of minimalism in a low fidelity visual and the
idea of reducing the quantity of elements in a visual.
For this project, I also utilized other sources which dealt directly with the effective use of visual in
presentations. One valuable project resource was a 2014 TEDx talk given by David JP Phillips entitle
How to Avoid Death by PowerPoint. The main points taken from this source include the limitation of
one topic per slide, the importance of the size of visuals in presentations, the ability to capture the

What Was The Expansion Of Westward Expansion
As more Americans began traveling west in the mid 1800s, it soon became not a matter of if but when
we would effectively connect the two coasts. Current methods of traveling were extremely slow and
costly, and many were pushing to advance into the west. Fortunately, on July 1, 1862, President
Lincoln signed the Pacific Railway Act, which authorized the Union Pacific Railroad and the Central
Pacific Railroad companies to build a railroad that started from Omaha, Nebraska and ended in
Sacremento, California. The government offered money and land, about 6400 acres, for every mile of
track laid. The two companies raced to build as much track as possible and eventually met at
Promontory Point, Utah on May 10, 1869. They had built 1775 miles of track through the Sierra
Nevada mountains, across the Great Plains, and endured a great number of difficulties along the way.
It was a joyous event when the final spike was driven into the ground, finally completing the
transcontinental railroad that connected the east and the west.
The mid 19th century was a time of westward expansion in the United States. Americans believed that
it was their destiny, and for many their god given right, to expand from coast to coast. The railroad
was seen as a way to reach this ideal and, as a stereotypical cowboy may say, Boy howdy did it. When
the final spike was driven in, people left and right celebrated, shooting cannons and ringing bells.
After a divisive Civil War, the transcontinental railroad

Comparing The Philosophies Of Michael Pollan And Raj Patel
The world continues to face a wide scale food crisis. The effects of this crisis reach from the farmers
who grow and raise the food to the very system of laws that are in place to govern the system itself.
Food giants are reaching deep into their pockets for lobbying in order to take advantage of both the
producers and the consumer all in the name of profit. Moreover, farmers are being driven to suicide,
and the ecosystem s livelihood is treading a fine line. Both Michael Pollan and Raj Patel bring to light
these problems and offer suggestions to help lessen their severity. Though there are many philosophies
on which they both agree, they both have their own ideas to fight back. Pollan seeks to challenge the
consumer as an individual while ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The three contingencies of Patel s plan include changing the governing laws of agribusiness,
improving the conditions of and supporting rural areas, and changing the role of eating in society.
Before much progress can be made, the ways in which businesses are required to operate must change.
Without any new legislations to stand in their way, nothing will alter the ways in which they operate or
the ways they look to further solidify their dominance. Next, rural growers simply need more help. In
current conditions, they barely scrape by due to the increasing demands from their purchasers and the
decreasing amounts of compensation collected. Contrary to the original perception, crop subsidies,
most associated with corn, provide no help to these smaller farmers. They can t compete with the mass
growers and their enormous swathes of land. It drives the rural farmers out of those particular markets,
and it often prevents them from growing crops their land is most suitable for. Finally, Pollan pushes
the idea that there must be a revamp of the meaning of food to consumers. As it stands, people view
eating as a task rather than an enjoyable experience. This leads the consumer to think little of the food,
especially in ways Michael Pollan insist they must think about the food. This anti cooking architecture
of society is, nonetheless, a self perpetuating cycle of

Attention everyone, a creaky voice scratched out on the old speaker, Attention, judging for
showmanship is about to begin, everyone please round up your animal and come to the ring. My

Everywhere around there was nothing but faded denim jeans, cowboy boots, old t shirts, plaid shirts,
and the occasional stetson. The screeching and bleating of surrounding animals bounced around in my
head, making it more difficult to concentrate. The smell of manure and farm animal burned my
nostrils as I shook my head to clear my thoughts. All around me people quickly rushed to their animals

all while freshening up themselves. Meanwhile I carefully took my market lamb away from the

thinks separately and contributes to new findings for the world. Without the Tower of Babel, not
everyone would be spread out like they are now, and we would all be thinking together, like one,
instead of all thinking up new ideas separately. We wouldn t ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Some people think that all languages evolved from one main language. They think all that the original
language changed a lot and changed differently depending on where you lived and who you were
with. In different countries, this main language changed in their own ways and eventually became a
new language. Languages are linked together by shared words, sounds, and grammatical construction.
So how could all languages have come from one original language if the words, sounds and
grammatical construction in many languages are nowhere near similar to that of other languages?
They couldn t have. Quoting from notes from my class Book of Genesis, There is no mathematical
possibility that these variations could have evolved by chance and no linguistic possibility that they all

My Philosophy And Rationale In The Classroom
Philosophy and Rationale The assertiveness is a clear affirmation that both teachers and students are to
be treated with respect (Purkey, 2004, p. 100). My philosophy within the classroom, is creating and
maintaining a sense of respect; a classroom where a mutual respect between myself and the students is
seen among all who enter the classroom environment. However, with this sense of mutual respect,
students should understand that if misbehavior does occur, all students will have a voice, but I have
the ultimate decision of choosing the route we take to ensure that this misbehavior does not occur
again. I also want students to be self aware; understanding that they are in control of their own lives
and that I respect them enough to let them make their own rational decisions. Another key component
in my philosophy of the classroom, is getting to know the students on a personal level. I want to know
about their families, the sports they play, the foods they like to eat, the friends they have, and/or the
church they attend. Based on personal experience, when a teacher takes the time to know you outside
of the classroom, a great bond is built. When the bond is built, a sense of trust in created between the
teacher and student. I want my students to trust me, respect me, but know that I believe in them to
make decisions that are beneficial for themselves; through this, I will respect my students, listen to
them, and support them in the decisions they make. If we set

Police Power In The 19th Century
During 1829, Parliament established the London Metropolitan Police Act, which approved the
foundation of an administration sponsored police drive. This new police drive had a standing quality
of a thousand men serving under the bearing of Sir Robert Peel. There were 17 divisions, which had 4
examiners and 144 constables each. The power central command was Scotland Yard, and it offered an
explanation to the Home Secretary. (19th Century Justice, 2006). In spite of the fact that wrongdoing
was taking off, many individuals expected this new police power would break down into a battle ready
instrument for political persecution and the refusal of opportunity. During the mid eighteenth century,
the police were frequently cruel and tormenting,

  • 2. Shirley Temple Timeline Character: Shirley Temple Chronological/Timeline Hook: (Sing and dance around to Animal Crackers in My Soup ) As you can see there, that was one of the many songs I performed as young child. I was an actress during the Great Depression, so with my cute little curls and abundance of joy, I made many people very happy, so I guess you could call me the child star of my time. Background info (birthplace, birthdate, any relevant childhood info., relevant relationship info., etc.): I was born on April 23, 1928, in Santa Monica, California. My mother and father were a banker and a housewife with two older children. My father being George Francis Temple, and my mother being Gertrude Temple. My two older brothers were John Stanley Temple being the oldest of us all, and George Francis Temple, Jr. being the second oldest. Roosevelt referred to me as Little Miss Miracle for raising the public s morale during the hard times of The Great Depression, even going so far as to say, As long as our country has Shirley Temple, we will be all right. My song and dance routine to the tune On the Good Ship Lollipop in 1934 s Bright Eyes earned me a special Academy Award, for Outstanding Personality of 1934. By 1940, I had 43 films under my belt. • 3. Minority Report Research Paper Minority Report What s the best way to lower the homicide rate? By stopping homicides before they happen? At least that s what the precrime police thought. Neuroin, a new drug introduced into society causes major birth defects in children of moms that use it. Many did not survive, but three were saved. They had an unwanted gift though. They could successfully predict future homicides by visions they receive. These children, called precognitives or precogs, help the department of precrime to completely stop murders in Washington D.C. for 6 years. The system was thought to be perfect, until a prevision was seen predicting John Anderton, one of the heads of precrime, is predicted to kill someone he hasn t even met yet. John takes off to try ... The computers are highly advanced, no longer having touch screens, but projections that can be maneuvered by hand motions. Cars that drive themselves in the far future seem much safer, and more convenient. Minimal crashes will occur, and a person could do other things instead of driving, say finishing a reaction paper... Although the precrime was a good idea, it proved to be unreliable and manipulatable, the precrime police did decide to take it down in the end, returning to more reasonable methods of fighting crime. With good always comes bad. I mean, how would we define what is good without the evil? With the updated technologies came things like new, more detrimental drugs, and attempts to get around these new technologies. The removing or replacing of eyeballs is an example of a retaliation to these new technologies. But, you have to expect people will find new ways to cheat the system and get around new securities. The good, new technology overrides the bad things of society. Subsequently, I believe that the future society is better than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Analysis Of The Book Invisible Lakes If the depth of Jay Gatsby s maniac love for Daisy was made known immediately, or the tension in Madame Bovary didn t rise in such calculated fashion, or Moby Dick started with Captain Ahab s fatal standoff with his white whale, some of literature s most beloved works would lose a great amount of their clout. Organization is among the most potent tools in literature. Content always steals the spotlight but the manner in which ideas are conveyed holds equal weight. Invisible Cities avoids the traditional template of a logical or chronologically organized narrative. My essay Invisible Lakes is a vain attempt to mimic the novel s eclectic organization. Italio Calvino utilizes a kaleidoscopic, narrow point of view to describe Venice in Invisible Cities, just as I do in my essay Invisible Lakes, both to achieve the goals of alluding to larger themes, developing more palpable scenes, and maintaining a phantasmagoric motif, each with varying results. Calvino aims to maintain a dream like lens throughout Invisible Cities. He was thinking of all these things when he desired a city. Isidora, therefore, is the city of his dreams: with one difference. The dreamed of city contained him as a young man; he arrives at Isidora in his old age. In the square there is a wall where the old men sit and watch the young boy go by; he is seated in a row with them. Desires are already memories. • 5. Compare And Contrast John Updike And Boys And Girls After reading A P by John Updike and Alice Munro s Boys and Girls , a centralized theme arose. Each story s protagonist demonstrates a unique internal struggle centered on the restrictions society places upon them. Even though the short stories written by John Updike and Alice Munro are remarkably different from each other, it is possible for a reader to interpret similarities between the two. A P is the story of a nineteen year old boy, Sammy, who is fighting against the expectation to blindly accept the social norms of society and follow the dull, routine life set before him. Sammy currently works as a cashier at the local A P supermarket and describes the customers shopping within A P as sheep, houseslaves and pigs being loaded into a chute. He yearns to be something more than a chain climbing employee like his co worker, Stokesie, or his boss, Lengel, who haggles over cabbages and hides in the manager s office all day. When three young teenage girls enter the store wearing nothing but bathing suits, things begin to change for Sammy. Sammy takes notice of the actions of the girls; how they go against the normal traffic flow of the supermarket and break the social rules of society with their attire. It is these attributes that attract Sammy to them, as they represent freedom and escape from the life he finds himself in. When Lengel approaches them and reprimands them for what they are wearing, Sammy quits in the hopes of becoming the girls unsuspected hero. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. James Barrie s Story Of Peter Pan Since the manifestation of James Barrie s story of Peter Pan over one hundred years ago, there have been numerous adaptations. The author Barrie also adapted his story as well on a few occasions in many ways. In fact, Barrie was the first to plan a film scenario, however, his plan failed to be used for the first film adaptation of Peter Pan in 1924 (Barrie, 2011). In this analysis, the criticism of Peter Pan s movies will be separated in two ways, first, from the point of view that the film is an exact replica of the novel and the other point of view is that the viewer considers the film as an autonomous piece with different interpretations. I will first argue that Barrie s original text adapted by Walt Disney s version is not in keeping with the darker, intricate original story however, the film is an autonomous piece of art that successfully opens viewers to their personal interpretations. I will then consider extra cinematic codes of the interpretations for James Barrie s story of Peter Pan through the adaptation of the film, Finding Neverland, with focus on: language codes, visual codes, non linguistic sound codes and cultural codes (McFarlane, 1996). To further the analysis a comparison from the original historical text of, J.M Barrie s Peter Pan and Lewis Carroll s Alice s Adventure in Wonderland that have been adapted to film I will outline the similarities as well as the differences. Omnivore s Dilemma By Michael Pollan Benecia Felix COL:Earth Book Review Omnivore s Dilemma By Michael Pollan Michael Pollan is the author of several New York Times bestseller books including the Omnivore s Dilemma. He is a professor of journalism at UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. Michael Pollan s perspective on food is that we should know what is in it and where it comes from, who grows it and how. The theme of this book is the industrial revolution for food. Its purpose is to make awareness that our food is getting its energy from our resources. Michael Pollan s goal with the omnivore s dilemma was to shed light on the way we eat now by telling stories about how we ate then and explaining the pros and cons of our change. The supply of corn has greatly surpassed the demand and therefore alternative decisions must be made as to where the corn will go which is why it is fed to cattle and other livestock. This is Pollan s way of tracing the steps of the industrial food chain. Since corn is produced so cheaply using synthetic nitrogen which creates a dependency on our fossil fuel resources rather than our solar resource. The Feedlot method has produced more issues than solutions. Yes, it does result in fattening cattle quicker which in term then produces faster meat but it results in manure that is extremely high in concentration of phosphorous and nitrogen that cannot be used as fertilizer to regenerate nutrients in the soil. If the soil cannot be regenerated cattle must be moved which leads to medical problems, which were attempted to be solved using antibiotics but only increased antibiotic resistant bacteria. These new practices benefit corporations that run them and produce easy and quick cheap meat but Pollan warns that they come with repercussions. Some of those ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. To The Lighthouse Essay Pause, reflect, and the reader may see at once the opposing yet relative perceptions made between life, love, marriage and death in Virginia Woolf s To the Lighthouse. In this novel, Woolf seems to capture perfectly the very essence of life, while conveying life s significance as communicated to the reader in light tones of consciousness arranged with the play of visual imagery. That is, each character in the novel plays an intrinsic role in that the individuality of other characters can be seen only through the former s psyche. Moreover, every aspect of this novel plays a significant role in its creation. For him, truth seems to be concrete, factual; for her, truth seems to be one s endeavor toward truth. To further clarify this claim, I will make reference to a point in the novel in which the reader is able to see just how different Mr. and Mrs. Ramsay perceive life. It is when they are discussing their son Andrew, and what he might accomplish in life: Oh scholarships! she said. Mr. Ramsay thought her foolish for saying that, about a serious thing, like a scholarship. He should be very proud of Andrew if he got a scholarship, he said. She would be just as proud of him if he didn t, she answered (Woolf 74). • 10. The Complexity Of Sociological Concept Of Health And Illness The complexity of sociological concept of health and illness is not easy to define and measure. As was summarised by Nettleton (2013) and according to Blaxter (2010) the definition of health can be both negative and positive. On the one hand there is a medical model of health, which tends to be negative and it is based on body s ability to function and body s chemistry. This biomedical perspective describes health as the absence of disease in measurable biological norm. On the other hand a positive definition, which is linked to well being of individual, stated that health is a complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity , was established by World Health Organisation (WHO) in 1948. Alternative and complementary medicine cannot challenge the dominance of biomedicine. As was summarised by Barry (2011) study of Illich (1993) stated that there are also harmful consequences of medical intervention. These implications of the power of medicine are referred to the term of Iatrogenesis, which implicates that without the medical intervention no harm would be done. Medical errors, negligence and adverse effect of drugs can affect patients health. Furthermore in some cases health professionals sometimes neglect patients right to inform about their health, which can play a major role in their process of recovery from illness. Illich (1993) also uses a term of medicalization of life where medical professionals, pharmaceutical companies promote sickness of society for their interest to gain power over society (ibid). Nettleton (2013) described medical model in the way that it is only aiming to restore body from disease to the normal state of being, free form any form or symptoms of disease. This matter is rather personal for individuals, what is normal and what is not tends to be subjective. Furthermore according to Walsh (2004) the biomedical model has been criticised and challenges since 1960 for only focusing on biological causes of illness. The critique is based on fact that this model is neglecting the impact of environmental, sociological and psychological aspects on health and illness. Famous study by McKeown (1979) provides another criticism of medical science by questioning their validity. Child abuse is the physical, sexual, or emotional maltreatment or neglect of a child or children ( Definitions of Child Abuse Neglect). One in five children, who are abused, die every single day as a result of child abuse, with most of these children being under the age of four. Some people believe child abuse should not be the government s problem because people have the right to do whatever they want with their children, but these people do not understand the effect child abuse has on innocent children, therefore why laws that protect children should be enforced regardless of the privacy and rights of the abusers being violated. The laws about child abuse are established in order to protect all of the children in the United States. In New York laws require that any social service profession or school related profession, or health care professions must report child abuse, even if they are suspicious. Some of the material I truly enjoyed and some of it not so much. I really enjoyed the Native American literature that we started out with in the beginning of the semester. I think the Native Americans are beautiful people who appreciated the land more than most. The Native Americans were smart people who used short stories such as The Chief s Daughters and Coyote and Bear to warn their readers of dangers or teach them moral lessons. I also enjoyed authors such as Edward Taylor, Anne Bradstreet, and Thomas Paine. I did not like reading William Byrd s material, chiefly because he was rude and spoke nastily of the Native Americans. It personally offended me that he thought their belief of afterlife to be gross and sensual . I have read material from many different authors and although I enjoyed most of them, I have to say that my two favorites were Edward Taylor and Anne Bradstreet. Both of these authors are Puritans, and it is easy to tell when reading their pieces. Puritans typically write in simple language, and always refer to God. Edward Taylor created a powerful analogy in his piece, Upon a Spider Catching a Fly. The analogy that he describes is an analogy between people and Satan. Graphic designers use numerous methods to create and combine words, symbols, and images, which creates a visual representation of ideas and messages. A graphic designer may use a combination of typography, visual arts and page layout techniques to produce a final result. William Morris and Joost Schmidt have both used these techniques to produce astonishing pieces of graphic design, which are going to be compared and contrasted throughout this essay. The 1923 legendary typographer and graphic designer Joost Schmidt in Weimar, Germany created Bauhaus Exhibition Poster. The other piece of design I have decided to analyse is a two page spread of the edition of works of Geoffrey Chaucer. This was the Kelmscott press finest achievement; it was designed by William Morris and illustrated by his friend Burne Jones. This was the most beautiful book of its day; it serves as a tribute to Chaucer and to Morris himself. (Meggs, P., Purvis, A. 2006). These design outcomes came from two very contrasting movements. The Arts and craft Movement and the Bauhaus movement. The Arts and Crafts Movement was an international design movement that thrived between 1800 and 1910. In America today, Americans have progressively paid more attention to the schooling process, trying harder to get the best education possible for their children. Catholic schools and Public schools both have advantages and disadvantages. Today, parents choose whether they would like to have their child in a public or private school. Both schools provide education and opportunities for students, but the decision of where to go is based on preferences of the parents. As educational institutions, Catholic Schools and Public schools are similar, yet different. The instructors in both Catholic and Public schools have similar teaching skills, yet differences exist. Catholic school reputation is one of being uptight and strict. The strictness of Catholic schools focuses on how long the uniform skirt is, having the uniform shirt always tucked in, wearing the right ankle socks, and not wearing makeup. Catholic schools discipline is not extreme. If a student becomes in trouble, the instructor would call the parents, there is not detention. Catholic school is very conservative. Catholic schools have certain numbers of students, so they are not exposed to different types of people. Catholic school held a high reputation on how students should act in class. She allowed me to observe her teaching a couple of students at Brighton Elementary School. The teacher informed me that she teaches ELL students using Scholastic books and a Scholastic app. Additionally, the scholastic app is usually used to help students replace missing words in a sentence, assist students with pronunciation, punctuation, comprehension. While I was observing her class, the students would click on a word and the computer would pronounce the word for them. This is a really good way for students to learn how to pronounce words accurately. I also observed her using several strategies to facilitate these students understanding of English as a second language, for instance, she mentioned one strategy for capital letters you step on gas and another for periods you brake . Another strategy that she uses when teaching them to write sentences is Mr. Space , which is the size of a Popsicle stick, and it allows the students to put appropriate spaces between each of their words. The students are required to take a test at the end of the year to measure their progress. Students are supposed to show growth and progress and this data is communicated to the student s parents. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One important thing that I learnt from this skill is that sometimes you might not need to speak a lot or try to speak all the time, but the important thing is that you should try to see which actor shares the same opinion as you and whether that actor is strong enough to act on your behalf. This was really obvious in the activity of multilateral negotiations on negotiating intervention in a civil conflict where I played Iraq. I found that Iraq shared a lot in common with the Arab states, especially Iran on the Syrian issues. Balancing interests in the negotiation through the Arab countries helped Iraq protect its interests. Without speaking much, but allying very well with Iran and balancing the interests with the Arab states, it turned out that I gained the highest score in my group. However, there was one thing I found quite unrealistic about this activity. That was the rule on unanimous agreement. I do not think this can be applied in the real world situation. I think that it would be better if we do not need to stick on this. The unanimous rule made some players concede too much, and that did not reflect real international negotiations. • 30. History And Development Of Modern Operative Obstetrics Essay Chapter 2 2.1 History of caesarean section and development of modern operative obstetrics The first modern caesarean section was performed by German gynaecologist Ferdinand Adolf Kehrer in 1881. (1) Probably the very first documented evidence of caesarean birth is a legal text dating to theera of Hammurabi (1795 1750 BC), describing the birth of a male child pulled out of the womb of a deceased woman (7). The name sectio caesarea was first used by the French obstetrician Guillimeau in 1598. At that time, the operation was used to deliver live babies from dead mothers (4). There are three different explanations about the origin of the name of the operation. 1) In 715 BC, the King of Rome, Numa Pompilius, codified the Roman laws. According to the law, it was forbidden to bury a dead pregnant woman before the fetus was excised. If the child was alive, it was called a caeson . This law, Lex Caesaris or Lex Caesarea, is assumed to be the origin for the name of the procedure cesarean section (4, 7, 9). 2) It has also been stated, that Julius Caesar has been delivered by this method, and gave the name for the operation. This is considered unlikely, because his mother is known to have been alive during Julius Caesars adulthood. During his reign about 100 BC no woman is known to have survived the operation. 3) A third explanation is that the name is simply derived from the Latin verb caedare, to cut. The word section is also derived from the latin verb secare, to cut (4). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. What Was The Expansion Of Westward Expansion As more Americans began traveling west in the mid 1800s, it soon became not a matter of if but when we would effectively connect the two coasts. Current methods of traveling were extremely slow and costly, and many were pushing to advance into the west. Fortunately, on July 1, 1862, President Lincoln signed the Pacific Railway Act, which authorized the Union Pacific Railroad and the Central Pacific Railroad companies to build a railroad that started from Omaha, Nebraska and ended in Sacremento, California. The government offered money and land, about 6400 acres, for every mile of track laid. The two companies raced to build as much track as possible and eventually met at Promontory Point, Utah on May 10, 1869. They had built 1775 miles of track through the Sierra Nevada mountains, across the Great Plains, and endured a great number of difficulties along the way. It was a joyous event when the final spike was driven into the ground, finally completing the transcontinental railroad that connected the east and the west. The mid 19th century was a time of westward expansion in the United States. Americans believed that it was their destiny, and for many their god given right, to expand from coast to coast. The railroad was seen as a way to reach this ideal and, as a stereotypical cowboy may say, Boy howdy did it. When the final spike was driven in, people left and right celebrated, shooting cannons and ringing bells. After a divisive Civil War, the transcontinental railroad ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The effects of this crisis reach from the farmers who grow and raise the food to the very system of laws that are in place to govern the system itself. Food giants are reaching deep into their pockets for lobbying in order to take advantage of both the producers and the consumer all in the name of profit. Moreover, farmers are being driven to suicide, and the ecosystem s livelihood is treading a fine line. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The three contingencies of Patel s plan include changing the governing laws of agribusiness, improving the conditions of and supporting rural areas, and changing the role of eating in society. Before much progress can be made, the ways in which businesses are required to operate must change. Without any new legislations to stand in their way, nothing will alter the ways in which they operate or the ways they look to further solidify their dominance. Next, rural growers simply need more help. In current conditions, they barely scrape by due to the increasing demands from their purchasers and the decreasing amounts of compensation collected. Contrary to the original perception, crop subsidies, most associated with corn, provide no help to these smaller farmers. They can t compete with the mass growers and their enormous swathes of land. It drives the rural farmers out of those particular markets, and it often prevents them from growing crops their land is most suitable for. Finally, Pollan pushes the idea that there must be a revamp of the meaning of food to consumers. As it stands, people view eating as a task rather than an enjoyable experience. This leads the consumer to think little of the food, especially in ways Michael Pollan insist they must think about the food. My Philosophy And Rationale In The Classroom Philosophy and Rationale The assertiveness is a clear affirmation that both teachers and students are to be treated with respect (Purkey, 2004, p. 100). My philosophy within the classroom, is creating and maintaining a sense of respect; a classroom where a mutual respect between myself and the students is seen among all who enter the classroom environment. However, with this sense of mutual respect, students should understand that if misbehavior does occur, all students will have a voice, but I have the ultimate decision of choosing the route we take to ensure that this misbehavior does not occur again. I also want students to be self aware; understanding that they are in control of their own lives and that I respect them enough to let them make their own rational decisions. Another key component in my philosophy of the classroom, is getting to know the students on a personal level. I want to know about their families, the sports they play, the foods they like to eat, the friends they have, and/or the church they attend. Based on personal experience, when a teacher takes the time to know you outside of the classroom, a great bond is built. When the bond is built, a sense of trust in created between the teacher and student.
