The Catcher in the Rye
The book The Catcher in the Rye is placed around the 1950s narrated by a young man named Holden
Caulfield who himself is the protagonist. Holden is not specific about his setting, location, time and
other physicality while narrating the story but he makes one thing clear: He is undergoing treatment in
a mental hospital or infirmary. The events he narrates comprises of time in between the start of
Christmas break and him leaving his school as he is expelled. Holden is sixteen years old. His story
commences from Saturday following the end of classes at the Pencey prep school in Agerstown,
Pennsylvania. Pencey is Holden s fourth school; he has already failed out of three others. At Pencey,
he has failed four out of five of his subjects and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Basically, he finds her attractive as she crosses her legs and lights a cigarette he, for a moment wants
to forget that she is her school mates mother. When he arrives at Penn Station, he goes into a phone
booth and considers calling several people, but for various reasons he decides against it. He gets in a
cab and out of certain unmentioned curiosity he asks him about where the ducks in Central Park go
when the lagoon freezes, but his question annoys the driver. Holden has the cab driver take him to the
Edmont Hotel, where he checks himself in. Right from that Edmont Hotel s room Holden can see into
the rooms of some of the guests in the opposite wing. He watches a man putting on silk stockings,
high heels, a bra, a corset, and an evening gown. He also sees a man and a woman in another room
taking turns spewing out mouthful of their drinks into each other s faces and laughing wildly. He
construes the couple s behavior as a form of sexual play and is both upset and provoked by it. After
smoking a couple of cigarettes, he calls Faith Cavendish, a woman he has never met but whose
number he got from a friend at Princeton. Holden thinks he remembers hearing that she used to be a
stripper, and he believes that he can persuade her to have sex with him. He calls her, while she is at

A PAnd Barn Burning Comparison
Sammy from John Updike s A P and Sarty from William Faulkner s Barn Burning are two great
examples of young people raising their standards and doing what they believe is right. In A P , Sammy
is nineteen years old and works at a local grocery store named the A P. His life changes the day he
quits his job after defending three girls that are called out by Lengel, the manager, for breaking the
unwritten dress code. In Barn Burning , Sarty is a ten year old boy who struggles between the fine line
of right and wrong when his father, Abner Snopes, is put on trial for burning down a barn. When his
father attempts to burn down another barn, Sarty takes charge and warns the owner. A P and Barn
Burning are short story classics that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sarty never justifies his father s actions and is aware that if he allows things to remain the same, he
will become a product of his environment. This is his motive for warning Abner s next barn burning
victim and his chance to move on with his life.
The time periods and locations in which A P and Barn Burning take place are very different. Sammy
lives in a more favorable time in the United States than Sarty. A P is set in a small town north of
Boston, Massachusetts around 1960. At this time, the United States was the main military
manufacturer and financial power in the capitalist world. The Hippie Movement just started and
shocked many traditional families with a new way of living. Sarty lives in Mississippi about twenty
years after the Civil War. Life was tough for Mississippians post Civil War. The Southern states were
in debt and devastation from the war was everywhere. Although America was transforming into a
more modern country in both stories, the time periods in which they live are completely opposite.
Sammy and Sarty are two protagonists that have to mature beyond normal circumstances and
experience the real world at tender ages. Each character is forced to grow up and refine themselves in
their darkest hour. Sammy and Sarty are both dissatisfied with their authority figures; however, the
time periods in which they live take place in different

Act 3 Scene 3 as the Turning Point of the Play Othello by William Shakespeare
Shakespeare wrote Othello in 1602. During Elizabethan times there were very few black people in
England. The white people felt scared about the black people because they didn t understand them.
The play explores racism and mixed race relationships.
Shakespeare apparently felt free to handle Giraldi s story with perfect freedom. He transformed a
straggling narrative of sordid crime into compact drama and high tragedy. The masterly first act is
essentially Shakespeare s invention. In this act, Othello, who has eloped with Desdemona, is accused
of stealing her. Blinded by prejudice, Desdemona s father cannot believe his ... Show more content on

We can see the anger and the resentment of Iago towards Othello by looking at the words that Iago
uses while reffering to Othello, for example the Moor , the devil , an old black ram .
In terms of Iagos feelings towards Cassio, his feelings are of Jealousy because Iago expected him self
to be promoted. Cassio is being described by Iago as mere prattle without practice, is all his soldier
ship . These words show that Cassio does not have the necessary experience in order to be Othello s
lieutenant.
I hate the Moor and He s done my office are words of resentment used during the play and they
describe the way Iago feels towards Othello and his idea of promoting Cassio as his Lieutenant.
Othello is portrayed as a loyal and faithful soldier to the Venation government. This can be interpreted
from the following words that Othello uses himself.
My services which I have done the signiory
This describes Othello as being proud of the services that he has done for his government. Also he is
seen as someone who respects the power structure of the city because he uses words such as most
potent, grave, reverend signior , as well as very noble .
He is also portrayed as a brave and a skillful soldier who is essential for the Venetian Government

The Purpose Of A Case Study
Media research indicates that journalistic standards and practices are socially constructed systems,
which deal with complex work processes by organising news flow and explicating roles and
competencies (Tuchman 1978; Fishman 1980). The case study method is regarded as a valid tool to
analyse a complex issue. A case study is defined as an empirical inquiry that investigates a
contemporary phenomenon within its real life context (Yin 2003: 13). It is best used to understand
complex social and organisational issues. Case study evidence to answer research questions and
contribute to theory development originates from a variety of sources, such as documentation, archival
records, interviews (qualitative or quantitative) and observation. In this ... Show more content on

The second is that it is not easily open to generalisation but if it is contextualised and carefully
described then others can consider its usefulness in other contexts and examples (Wisker 2001:191).
Finally, Dominick and Wimmer argue that case studies are likely to be time consuming and may
occasionally produce massive quantities of data that are hard to summarise (1987: 165). With regard
to this study, I would like to argue that the strengths of observations outweigh the weaknesses. In
addition, there is simply no other method that applies better to what I want to investigate. The findings
are not representative of all newsrooms experimenting with convergence since the research is derived
from one case. Therefore I do not wish to generalise any findings from this case study. I tried to
provide readers with good raw material for their own generalising because the reader can make his or
her own generalisations and interpret it their way (Stake, 1995:102). However, the findings will offer
insights that could be probed for future

Taking a Look at Peripheral Neuropathy
Peripheral neuropathy is a fairly common neurological problem and is a generalized term that means
that there is a disorder in the peripheral nervous system. Being that this is a broad definition and
includes many varieties and causes of peripheral nerve disease, a proper diagnosis is needed for the
definition to be specified. The overall prevalence of the condition is about 2400 (2·4%) per 100 000
population, but in people older than 55 years, the prevalence rises to about 8000 (8%) per 100 000.
(Simpson, 2010) Yet this does not include traumatic peripheral nerve injuries meaning that the number
of peripheral neuropathy in our society is greater. In first world countries, the most common cause of
peripheral neuropathy is diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases
characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both.
(Loganathan, 2006) Due to the fact that the diagnose of diabetes mellitus has increased in our general
population of the USA, the amount people in risk of diabetic peripheral neuropathy is also expected to
increase.
In our case we are dealing with diabetic peripheral neuropathy that results from nerve damage due to
the high blood glucose levels diabetics. About 60 to 70 percent of people who have had diabetes for
many years have some form of nerve damage, but not everyone has symptoms. (Inzucchi, 2012)
Common types of diabetic neuropathy are those that affect the limbs along with the

The Cold Creek
It was cold and still the dark of dawn.
Rafel looked up from the creek before him to the ten foot high privacy brick fence encasing the
Chamberlain Golf Resort across the breadth of the snaking creek. His mission, for now, was to swim
across the mile wide creek and through a channel underneath the walls to the man made lake within
the golf course. Where he would take up a sniper position and await further instructions on his
unknown target. He still had about an hour of darkness to his advantage.
He stripped to his dry diving suit, putting on his goggles, he took a deep breath and plunged in.
The initial jarring impact of the dive was always the worst. The sharp blast of the cold that forced a

Juvenile Rights Of Juveniles
The Rights of juveniles Juveniles also have rights that look out for their best interest. According to,
Delinquency and Juvenile Justice in American Society, Sheldon provides the rights that juveniles are
granted. The supreme court ruled that when a judge considers whether to transfer a case from juvenile
court to an adult court, a juvenile is entitled to a hearing and has the right to counsel. The court must
provide a written statement giving the reasons for the waiver, and the defense counsel must be given
access to all records and reports used in reaching the decision to waive. Often times juveniles rights
are waived or broken due to lack of proper legal representation. (Sheldon, 2006) In the case of Gault,
they argued that the juvenile code of Arizona was unconstitutional: The justices found in favor of
Gault include (1) adequate written notice of charges, (2) the right to counsel, (3) privilege against self
incrimination, (4) the right to cross examine accusers, (5) a transcript of the proceedings, and (6) the
right to appellate review. (Gault, 2002) Nevertheless, more recent studies indicates that the system
today has failed to deliver the procedural justice promised by gault. For example, misconduct which
includes forcing unprepared parties to proceed with trial or a guilty plea, interrupting the lawyers
witness examinations with their own questions, and cutting off lawyers questioning. It was also
revealed , two thirds of the surveyed court workers noted that

German Expressionism And The German Expressionism
It has been argued that the German expressionist movement has had an influence on many later
filmmakers and genres. I agree with this argument and in this essay I will be explaining why I believe
this to be the case by discussing the common traits of expressionism and applying them to later films
and genres.
Unlike other European countries, the film industry in Germany in post World War I was booming, in
fact it was second only to Hollywood. This was mainly due to the German government s ban on
foreign films and the rising demand by German theatres. Between 1914 and 1918 the amount of film
production companies rose from 25 to 130 and continued to grow, by 1921 there were over 300
companies. The government supported filmmaking throughout the post war period; the ban was lifted
in 1920 which gave German filmmakers little competition for over five years.
Expressionism began in the form of paintings in 1908 and soon transferred to a wide range of media
including cinema. In 1920 a film was premiered in Berlin and critics declared expressionism had
reached cinema. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (directed by Robert Wiene) was the first of its kind.
Although audiences were used to this style in art and other media, it had never been seen on film
before and was a success with the public. From that point onwards other films with the same distinct
style were released. In the short period between 1920 and 1927 over twenty films were made that fit
into the category of expressionism

Analysis Of Gateway To Freedom
Gateway to freedom is about the times when the slaves were helped by abolitionists to escape to
Canada in hope to find freedom. It is a book authored by Eric Foner, an American Historian. He is
well known for writing about the American political history, freedom history, historiographies and
about the African American biography. In 2011 he won the Lincoln Prize, the Bancroft Prize Pulitzer
prize for History for his book The Fiery trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery . Gateway to
freedom takes us back to the slave trade period, in New York City which was a significant hub for
railway activity. It is also in New York where there was the largest population of blacks, which made it
as some sort of haven for fugitives and runaways.

Foner shows how Gays helped save the fugitives, providing safety homes and aiding them escape to
Canada. Gays also provides a crucial insight on the key role played by the slaves in realizing their
freedom. His books Reconstruction and Give me Freedom show very well the emerging social issues
of race, social life and politics in the aspect of improved approaches toward the status of the blacks in
the American society. However, Foner focuses more on the negative aspects, while aspects such as
urbanization and more job opportunities are not looked upon ( Papson Calarco ,2015).
In 1850, the Compromise was formed as a way of preventing the southerners from withdrawing from
the Union. Part of this law, was the Fugitive Slave act, which aroused many reactions from the public
that it ultimately led to the civil war. This Fugitive Slave Act stated that the southerners were still
owners of these slaves that had escaped to the north and that the Northerners had to abide to it, even
though most of their states had illegalized slavery. This law also made it hard for the blacks to have a
fair trial as they were not able to prove whether they were free or not. This led to the blacks in the
northern states freeing to Canada in fear of being returned to slavery and because they did not feel as
safe anymore. The Compromise, to keep the southerners in the Union, made these laws on slaves to
favor them. However unexpectedly it made the Abolitionists

Piaget s Theory Of Cognitive Development Essay
Discuss Piaget s theory of Cognitive Development Cognitive Development can be defined as the
development of thought processes. This includes thinking, concept understanding, problem solving,
and decision making and remembering from childhood on to adulthood. There are two theories of
Cognitive development that offer us two different ways of understanding it. The first is called Domain
general. This theory states that one line of development determines all of the changes in a child s
intellectual system (van Geert, 1998). This means that if one thing goes wrong then it will impact on
all other areas of a child s cognitive system, resulting in a high scale problem. The second is the
Domain specific theory. This theory varies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Children in this stage believe that everything is about them; they have an egocentric view of the
world. Piaget s three mountains task was used in order to detect the ability to mentally rotate an image
(Inagaki et al., 2002). Children aged four or five were not able to say what another person would be
able to see from their view; these skills are not gained until the age of around nine years old.
120281576 In stage three we have the concrete operations where children begin to gain some logical
reasoning about the world. This stage occurs between seven and twelve years of age according to
Piaget. They start to solve conservation problems but are very limited to concrete situations as they
find systematic thinking difficult (Piaget, 1972). Stage four is the formal operational stage, ages
twelve and above. Children learn to think about abstract ideas logically in this stage. They learn to
understand that their behaviour can have different consequences under different condition (Piaget,
2008). There are many critics of Piaget s stage theory, Margaret Donaldson and Hughes to name a few.
A problem with his theory is that it proposes a single linear sequence that holds four very broad stages
where each person must pass in order to fully develop their cognitive skills (Feldman, 2004). It
therefore is too general as it does not give us much detail about the different stages and does not take
into account any individual differences at all.

The Issue Of The Canadian Election
The 2015 Canadian election was one of great importance that showcased a changing of guard in the
Canadian political context. Key issues in this election were; Bill c 21, multiculturalism, the refugee
crisis, Marijuana legislation, war on terror and ISIS, and environmental policies. Although these are
all pinnacle matters, one of the most pressing issue was economic policies. Economics policy is what
is commonly seen as the commons man s issues and what might win most people over in an election

The Consumption Of Fast Food
The number of kids affected by obesity has tripled since 1980, and this can be traced in large part to
lack of exercise and an unhealthy diet (Pedro et al.). Caloric intake has increased enough since the
1970 s which explains the rising trend in obesity, while caloric output has remained essentially
unchanged. Americans are eating more unhealthy food and intaking more calories, causing this
nationwide epidemic. The big fast food chains market their foods to Americans constantly. On
average, teens see three to five fast food ads per day (Muntel). Fast food is ingrained into the minds of
children and the craving for it stays with them even when they are adults. Americans should eliminate

Extra fat in the body can lead to numerous amounts of diseases. Including heart disease, stroke, high
blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, and asthma. This is a major issue, since obesity rates are much higher
among children, teens, and adults who consume fast food regularly. Obesity leaves adolescents with
problems for the rest of their lives, which is why Americans should eliminate the regular consumption
of fast food from their diet.
Nonetheless, it is a remarkably tough task to get Americans to eliminate fast food from their diet. The
expenditure of this unhealthy food is very common in young America. Fast food consumption has
greatly increased in the past forty years because of low prices compared to the rest of the market and
the fast paced American lifestyle. America has the fifth highest teen obesity percentage in the world,
with more than fifteen percent of teenagers being considered obese (Muntel). According to Dr. David

Japan, which allows her to hold on to the idea of still being married to Pinkerton. This is important
because Pinkerton told Butterfly that he would return the next time that Robin s nested in America,
and Cio Cio San notes that Robins have already nested three times in Japan. In addition, she is, also,
religious. Cio Cio San, after she is married, changes her religion to Christianity, which causes her to
get disowned by her whole family and Bonze, her priest uncle, curses her. Thus, religion played a
huge part in Butterfly s life. Also, there is a lot of foreshadowing in the story, such as when Pinkerton
proclaims that he will take an American wife before getting married to Butterfly, so we know that
something terrible is going to happen to Butterfly, which makes her the object of the audiences

Letter To Queen Victoria Essay
In the text, Letter to Queen Victoria , written by Lin Zexu in 1839, he implores the Queen of Great
Britain, Queen Victoria, to stop her subjects from selling opium to the Chinese public. Zexu does so
by exemplifying the past relationship of China and Britain, by moral persuasion, and by warnings and
threats. However, Lin Zexu s assumption of calling British subjects as Barbarian and compliant to
Chinese rule ineffectively persuades. First, Lin Zexu exemplify the past good relationship of China
and Britain by stating that the past rulers and traditions of Britain are at peace with China, that both
nations benefited from trade until Opium outbreaks throughout China s population . Zexu states The
kings of your honorable country by a tradition handed down from generation to generation have

Lin Zexu stated that they will increase the common weal and get rid of evil , referring to opium
distribution in China. Zexu soothed Queen Victoria that if they agree to China s condition, heaven and
spirit will support her, give her a long life and fortune. In addition, he warned her that he who sells
opium shall receive the death penalty. Zexus, further imploring of the Queen of Britain by threats,
stated: if the merchant of your honorable country wish to enjoy trade with us on a permanent basis
they must fearfully obey our law in which penalties are decapitation or strangulation. In conclusion,
the 1839 Letter to Queen Victoria by Lin Zexu argued that Opium is a source of evil and pain and
appealed to the Queen of Great Britain to abolish sale and smuggling of opium in China. Zexu did this
through exemplifying the past trading relationship of China and Great Britain, also by moral
persuasion, and last by means of warnings and

Analysis Of The Jumping Frog
The lowest intellect, like the highest, possesses a skill of some kind and takes a keen pleasure in
testing it, proving it, perfecting it (Mark Twain). The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County
was one of Mark Twain s first works and it helped people start to notice who he was. This short story
was about someone listening to a man telling a story about a gambler and a frog. Although the story
itself sounds a bit weird, that was one of the ways of writing that Twain was best known for. The
writing style that Twain uses in this work, and many others, helped create his success and makes him a
better writer. In this specific short story, the speaker spoke very seriously and casually which
countered the tone that was most based on the listener being annoyed that they had to hear his story.
This aspect of the story helped contribute more towards Twain s writing style, and his style yet to
come. In 1865 his story about the jumping frog of Calaveras County, which was published in New
York and reprinted in papers around the United States, started to make him celebrated too. (Stephan
Railton) Although The Jumping Frog wasn t Twain s most popular piece by a long shot, it did very
well for him at the time. At this point in Twain s writing, it was the his first great success which helped
make it as timeless as it is. He later went on to write famous books such as The Adventures of Tom
Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn which both shared the humor that Twain is most

The Effects Of Alcoholism On The Individual Health
When talking about alcoholism, we have to take into consideration all of the effects that the alcohol
use and misuse have, not only on the individual and its family but on the whole society as well. More
or less people drink because they want to socialize and some people drink because they think that with
the alcohol they will recover a solution or make their problems easier. Alcohol can have big
implications on the individual health. The individual that is an alcoholic or that has alcohol related
problems can be more prone to different diseases. If the alcohol is used constantly for a long period of
time it can harm not only the physical but the mental health as well. The individual using alcohol can
become aggressive and violent towards the family. The household may also suffer not just physical but
a mental abuse as well. The individual with an alcohol related problem may start being absent from
work more frequently, having a lack of productivity, be more easily annoyed and begin arguing with
coworkers or superiors. This may lead to losing the occupation and create even bigger troubles with
the family, friends, and the vicinity. From this being said, there is a big burden on the society as well.
All the injuries, violence that may occur, traffic accidents, treatments, medical bills, changing policies,
and so many other problems that the society has to deal with. Every society, country, nation is
different and unique. All of them have

Finding Enlightenment In Siddhartha
Siddhartha takes place in Nepal, India. The major theme that really stood out to me was how
Siddhartha tried to find Enlightenment. All the Brahmins and sages of the Brahma pathway of life are
also trying to find Enlightenment. Siddhartha grows up around all the Brahmins and sages, and he is
guided by the Brahmin teachers which none of them have found Enlightenment. While in search of
Enlightenment, Siddhartha runs into the Buddha. The Buddha himself has already found
Enlightenment, Siddharth wants to be guided by the Buddha. Siddartha now has to leave his own
home and father, in the search to find Enlightenment. One thing is, Siddartha doesn t believe that you
can be taught to find Enlightenment, but only truly find it for yourself. Siddhartha learns that a true
seeker could not accept any teachings, not if he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is much too dependent on others, that he himself cannot find Enlightenment. When someone is
seeking...it happens quite easily that he only sees the thing that he is seeking; that he is unable to find
anything, unable to absorb anything...because he is obsessed with his goal. Seeking means: to have a
goal; but finding means: to be free, to be receptive, to have no goal. (113) Govinda s failure in
comparison to Siddhartha s success into Enlightenment supports the fact that you cannot be taught
Enlightenment. Gotama s teaching steered Govinda in the wrong direction. Because of Gotama s
teaching, Govinda is trying to get Gotama to teach him and becomes a follower of Govinda. He was
originally on the same path as Siddhartha, but was not as strong as a self believer as Siddhartha. Even
through the teaching of others that you cannot be taught Enlightenment, Govinda is still following the
crowd of all the people who have not found it by having the same beliefs. You must find it truly in
yourself, and that is what Siddhartha is trying to portray to his blinded friend

The Lokia And Like The Leaves By Graciela Huinao And Two...
Scars that can t be seen, are the hardest to heal. This phrase can be connected to the two literary
poems, The Lokia, written by Graciela Huinao and Like the Leaves poet by Humberto Ak abal. In The
Lokia, expresses the grief of the Native Americans of losing their properties to the Europeans.
Similarity, the second poem Like the Leaves, illustrates that a tree is a figure of a Native American
losing their culture and themselves to the injustices of their society. Both of these two poems are then
connected to a historical text, Canada s Hidden History, My Mother and Me, authored by Gabrielle
Scrimshaw. In Canada s Hidden History, My Mother and Me communicate the injustice events of the
Native Americans has to endure; only lived the role of a bystander. In the two literary poems, The
Lokia, written by Graciela Huinao and Like the Leaves by Humberto Ak abal, the two authors used
symbolism to convey the scars of the Native American society, which it can never be healed. The two
poems, however, advocate becoming an upstander that stands against the injustices. The Loika, who
can only sing in sorrow, is a representation of the scars in the Native Americans that can t do anything
to stop the conqueror. The Loika sings, for the loss of its home, property, and resources. Huinao
expresses, Loika, why do you sing, if your voice wavers? I sing for my tree, for the morsels of food,
for my land, For what was mine yesterday. I sing for the sorrow of losing these things... (Huinao,

some of the most brutal, violent, and heinous crimes would take place, giving weight to not just the

of the community initiative was brought about when it was discovered that little to nothing was
contributed from the group back to the community, as would be the case with the second community
initiative called Community Urban Development Incorporated. It wouldn t be until the Black Mafia s
third community initiative front that a lasting impact is made. The third initiative would be called
Black B Inc. (short for Black Brothers Inc.) and it was incentivized to help clean up neighborhoods
that struggled with gang warfare, although it had more of an opposing effect than a helping effect.

Psychoactive Drug Addiction
A narrow definition of the term addiction refers to habitual psychological and physiological
dependence on a substance beyond one s voluntary control. Terms such as workaholic, sex addict, and
computer junkie arose to describe behaviors that have features in common with alcoholism and other
substance addictions. Substance addiction is a multi pronged system in which lifestyle has a role but
the biology of a person s body is a major factor. These substances, which are called psychoactive
drugs, are what people become addicted to and are described as chemicals that affect mental processes
and behavior by temporarily changing perception and awareness. There are many different theories
about what addiction is and why it happens but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once GAMA is attach to the receptor sites on the protein neurons then the channel is opened and the
chloride flow freely. Allowing these negatively charged chloride ions to flow into cells causes neurons
to become less active and pulse less therefore the brain is sending and receiving fewer
neurotransmitters (McKim 158). As talked about earlier, different drugs influence each of these
neurotransmitters differently. Each psychoactive drug has different effects on the body and different
uses. The term psychoactive describes a substance that affects the central nervous system (the brain
and spinal cord), producing changes in a person s mental activity or behavior. Psychoactive drugs may
affect the way an individual thinks, behaves, and analyzes. Many popular and widely used substances
are psychoactive such as alcohol. Many Doctors prescribe psychoactive drugs for different reasons.
Among the most important medical uses are as anesthesia for surgery and as analgesics (painkillers).
Dangerous psychoactive drugs are believed to have little or no medical benefit, so are used illegally
for recreational purposes including altering consciousness, improving performance, and improving
mood. When drugs are used for these purposes it can eventually lead to addiction.
There are 4 main categories which all psychoactive drugs fall under. These categories consist of the
following hallucinogens, stimulants, depressants, and opiates. Hallucinogens can cause people to

William Shakespeare s Twelfth Night And Thomas Middleton...
The Renaissance: Essay 1 revisited
The Renaissance was a time of cultural and social revolution in England, at least in the south of it.
The plays and playwrights of the time challenged the societal norms and pushed boundaries into never
before thought of areas, this essay will show how Renaissance drama was subversive and created the
world we live in today. The two plays I will be focusing on are: William Shakespeare s Twelfth Night
and Thomas Middleton s Women beware Women . Both share similar themes yet go about them very
differently to one another.
Twelfth Night (or What You Will ) was written in 1601, near the middle of Shakespeare s career, and a
mere 15 years before his death in 1616. Considered by many critics as one of his greatest comedies,
Twelfth Night is about deception, disguises and madness, along with the bizarre things caused by love
itself. This play is also one of Shakespeare s plays that include a female protagonist, pretending to be a
man. (At the time of the play all parts where played by men, so Viola would have been a man
pretending to be a women who was also pretending to be a man!)
Viola, the female protagonist, like many of Shakespeare s heroines is likeable from the get go with no
real character flaws to note of and no serious faults to note of. (Discounting her decision to dress as a
man, as it sets the plot in motion.) And while other character s love is a fickle thing, such as Orsino
who can t decide between Olivia and

Connectivity And Its Discontent By Sherry Turkle
All advantages have corresponding disadvantages. Sherry Turkle s essay Connectivity and its
Discontents address her stance towards technological communication. Throughout her essay, she
provides examples that illustrate how the world is consistently depending on technology for
communication. Turkle s opinion towards the issue is that, she believes we ll eventually sacrifice
communication for mere connection. Her examples make the reader consider that technological
communication leads to human beings losing intensity in communication in both personal and
professional situations because of distraction and convenience. The twenty first century widely
introduced a variety technological advancements which made people rely often on the technology.
Thinking back to her opinion towards the issue I would agree with the idea that humans are becoming
too attached to technology, but I would disagree that technology draws a wedge between people.
Having an environment that is advancing daily in technology makes communication everyday easier
for people. It expanse the availability for communication for the people who are in different countries,
gives them the ability to communicate in the comfort of their own home. For an instant, my mother
lives here in the United States, but her family lives in Mexico, therefore, communicating face to face
is inconvenient for them unless she flies to them. Technology has made my mother connect more with
her family due to appreciating every moment

Analysis Of Lorna Crozier s Poem The Eye Rhyme
A strong masculine rhyme consisting of a single stressed syllable My Tongue is generations dead, My
Nose defiles a comely head; (5 6) gives a weight to these lines and provides rhetorical emphasis. It
creates a break by bonding these lines tightly to each other. Because it is a perfect rhyme, it sounds a
bit cutesy and childish, so it creates levity to contrast and enlighten the theme of death. The eye
rhyme, For hearkening to carnal evils My Ears have been the very devil s (7 8) creates more
dissonance and thus disjunction in the reader. This irritation allows passage back into a state where it
easier to empathize with the devil and evil. More furtive then the Hand in low And vicious venery Not
so! (11 12) exemplifies an imperfect or partial or approximate or slant or pararhyme which supports
the theme of deception and dissent articulated by the words, furtive (11) and, Not so! (12).
3.What is the chief symbol in Lorna Crozier s poem Forms of Innocence (Geddes, 751)? What does
the symbol suggest beyond its literal meaning?
The chief symbol in Lorna Crozier s poem is the black swan. The swan evokes the dark passionate
mysterious mystic of wild unpredictable dark feminine energy that holds the quiet potential power of
creation. The swan is the companion of the love goddesses Saraswati and Venus in Roman mythology.
It represents the flight of a young girl s innocent ignorance towards the sky as it is ripped away by the
powers of sexual enlightenment. The bird acts as a

  • 2. The Catcher in the Rye The book The Catcher in the Rye is placed around the 1950s narrated by a young man named Holden Caulfield who himself is the protagonist. Holden is not specific about his setting, location, time and other physicality while narrating the story but he makes one thing clear: He is undergoing treatment in a mental hospital or infirmary. The events he narrates comprises of time in between the start of Christmas break and him leaving his school as he is expelled. Holden is sixteen years old. His story commences from Saturday following the end of classes at the Pencey prep school in Agerstown, Pennsylvania. Pencey is Holden s fourth school; he has already failed out of three others. At Pencey, he has failed four out of five of his subjects and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He gets in a cab and out of certain unmentioned curiosity he asks him about where the ducks in Central Park go when the lagoon freezes, but his question annoys the driver. Holden has the cab driver take him to the Edmont Hotel, where he checks himself in. Right from that Edmont Hotel s room Holden can see into the rooms of some of the guests in the opposite wing. He watches a man putting on silk stockings, high heels, a bra, a corset, and an evening gown. He also sees a man and a woman in another room taking turns spewing out mouthful of their drinks into each other s faces and laughing wildly. He construes the couple s behavior as a form of sexual play and is both upset and provoked by it. After smoking a couple of cigarettes, he calls Faith Cavendish, a woman he has never met but whose number he got from a friend at Princeton. • 3. A PAnd Barn Burning Comparison Sammy from John Updike s A P and Sarty from William Faulkner s Barn Burning are two great examples of young people raising their standards and doing what they believe is right. In A P , Sammy is nineteen years old and works at a local grocery store named the A P. His life changes the day he quits his job after defending three girls that are called out by Lengel, the manager, for breaking the unwritten dress code. In Barn Burning , Sarty is a ten year old boy who struggles between the fine line of right and wrong when his father, Abner Snopes, is put on trial for burning down a barn. When his father attempts to burn down another barn, Sarty takes charge and warns the owner. A P and Barn Burning are short story classics that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sarty never justifies his father s actions and is aware that if he allows things to remain the same, he will become a product of his environment. This is his motive for warning Abner s next barn burning victim and his chance to move on with his life. The time periods and locations in which A P and Barn Burning take place are very different. Sammy lives in a more favorable time in the United States than Sarty. A P is set in a small town north of Boston, Massachusetts around 1960. At this time, the United States was the main military manufacturer and financial power in the capitalist world. The Hippie Movement just started and shocked many traditional families with a new way of living. Sarty lives in Mississippi about twenty years after the Civil War. Life was tough for Mississippians post Civil War. The Southern states were in debt and devastation from the war was everywhere. Although America was transforming into a more modern country in both stories, the time periods in which they live are completely opposite. Sammy and Sarty are two protagonists that have to mature beyond normal circumstances and experience the real world at tender ages. Each character is forced to grow up and refine themselves in their darkest hour. Sammy and Sarty are both dissatisfied with their authority figures; however, the time periods in which they live take place in different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Act 3 Scene 3 as the Turning Point of the Play Othello by... Act 3 Scene 3 as the Turning Point of the Play Othello by William Shakespeare Shakespeare wrote Othello in 1602. During Elizabethan times there were very few black people in England. The white people felt scared about the black people because they didn t understand them. The play explores racism and mixed race relationships. Shakespeare apparently felt free to handle Giraldi s story with perfect freedom. He transformed a straggling narrative of sordid crime into compact drama and high tragedy. The masterly first act is essentially Shakespeare s invention. In this act, Othello, who has eloped with Desdemona, is accused of stealing her. Blinded by prejudice, Desdemona s father cannot believe his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cassio is being described by Iago as mere prattle without practice, is all his soldier ship . These words show that Cassio does not have the necessary experience in order to be Othello s lieutenant. I hate the Moor and He s done my office are words of resentment used during the play and they describe the way Iago feels towards Othello and his idea of promoting Cassio as his Lieutenant. Othello is portrayed as a loyal and faithful soldier to the Venation government. This can be interpreted from the following words that Othello uses himself. My services which I have done the signiory This describes Othello as being proud of the services that he has done for his government. • 5. The Purpose Of A Case Study Media research indicates that journalistic standards and practices are socially constructed systems, which deal with complex work processes by organising news flow and explicating roles and competencies (Tuchman 1978; Fishman 1980). The case study method is regarded as a valid tool to analyse a complex issue. A case study is defined as an empirical inquiry that investigates a contemporary phenomenon within its real life context (Yin 2003: 13). It is best used to understand complex social and organisational issues. Case study evidence to answer research questions and contribute to theory development originates from a variety of sources, such as documentation, archival records, interviews (qualitative or quantitative) and observation. The second is that it is not easily open to generalisation but if it is contextualised and carefully described then others can consider its usefulness in other contexts and examples (Wisker 2001:191). Finally, Dominick and Wimmer argue that case studies are likely to be time consuming and may occasionally produce massive quantities of data that are hard to summarise (1987: 165). With regard to this study, I would like to argue that the strengths of observations outweigh the weaknesses. In addition, there is simply no other method that applies better to what I want to investigate. The findings are not representative of all newsrooms experimenting with convergence since the research is derived from one case. Therefore I do not wish to generalise any findings from this case study. I tried to provide readers with good raw material for their own generalising because the reader can make his or her own generalisations and interpret it their way (Stake, 1995:102). • 9. Taking a Look at Peripheral Neuropathy Peripheral neuropathy is a fairly common neurological problem and is a generalized term that means that there is a disorder in the peripheral nervous system. Being that this is a broad definition and includes many varieties and causes of peripheral nerve disease, a proper diagnosis is needed for the definition to be specified. The overall prevalence of the condition is about 2400 (2·4%) per 100 000 population, but in people older than 55 years, the prevalence rises to about 8000 (8%) per 100 000. (Simpson, 2010) Yet this does not include traumatic peripheral nerve injuries meaning that the number of peripheral neuropathy in our society is greater. In first world countries, the most common cause of peripheral neuropathy is diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. (Loganathan, 2006) Due to the fact that the diagnose of diabetes mellitus has increased in our general population of the USA, the amount people in risk of diabetic peripheral neuropathy is also expected to increase. In our case we are dealing with diabetic peripheral neuropathy that results from nerve damage due to the high blood glucose levels diabetics. About 60 to 70 percent of people who have had diabetes for many years have some form of nerve damage, but not everyone has symptoms. • 11. Juvenile Rights Of Juveniles The Rights of juveniles Juveniles also have rights that look out for their best interest. According to, Delinquency and Juvenile Justice in American Society, Sheldon provides the rights that juveniles are granted. The supreme court ruled that when a judge considers whether to transfer a case from juvenile court to an adult court, a juvenile is entitled to a hearing and has the right to counsel. The court must provide a written statement giving the reasons for the waiver, and the defense counsel must be given access to all records and reports used in reaching the decision to waive. Often times juveniles rights are waived or broken due to lack of proper legal representation. (Sheldon, 2006) In the case of Gault, they argued that the juvenile code of Arizona was unconstitutional: The justices found in favor of Gault include (1) adequate written notice of charges, (2) the right to counsel, (3) privilege against self incrimination, (4) the right to cross examine accusers, (5) a transcript of the proceedings, and (6) the right to appellate review. (Gault, 2002) Nevertheless, more recent studies indicates that the system today has failed to deliver the procedural justice promised by gault. • 12. German Expressionism And The German Expressionism It has been argued that the German expressionist movement has had an influence on many later filmmakers and genres. I agree with this argument and in this essay I will be explaining why I believe this to be the case by discussing the common traits of expressionism and applying them to later films and genres. Unlike other European countries, the film industry in Germany in post World War I was booming, in fact it was second only to Hollywood. This was mainly due to the German government s ban on foreign films and the rising demand by German theatres. Between 1914 and 1918 the amount of film production companies rose from 25 to 130 and continued to grow, by 1921 there were over 300 companies. The government supported filmmaking throughout the post war period; the ban was lifted in 1920 which gave German filmmakers little competition for over five years. Expressionism began in the form of paintings in 1908 and soon transferred to a wide range of media including cinema. In 1920 a film was premiered in Berlin and critics declared expressionism had reached cinema. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (directed by Robert Wiene) was the first of its kind. Although audiences were used to this style in art and other media, it had never been seen on film before and was a success with the public. From that point onwards other films with the same distinct style were released. In the short period between 1920 and 1927 over twenty films were made that fit into the category of expressionism ... Gays also provides a crucial insight on the key role played by the slaves in realizing their freedom. His books Reconstruction and Give me Freedom show very well the emerging social issues of race, social life and politics in the aspect of improved approaches toward the status of the blacks in the American society. However, Foner focuses more on the negative aspects, while aspects such as urbanization and more job opportunities are not looked upon ( Papson Calarco ,2015). In 1850, the Compromise was formed as a way of preventing the southerners from withdrawing from the Union. Part of this law, was the Fugitive Slave act, which aroused many reactions from the public that it ultimately led to the civil war. This Fugitive Slave Act stated that the southerners were still owners of these slaves that had escaped to the north and that the Northerners had to abide to it, even though most of their states had illegalized slavery. This law also made it hard for the blacks to have a fair trial as they were not able to prove whether they were free or not. This led to the blacks in the northern states freeing to Canada in fear of being returned to slavery and because they did not feel as safe anymore. • 16. Piaget s Theory Of Cognitive Development Essay Discuss Piaget s theory of Cognitive Development Cognitive Development can be defined as the development of thought processes. This includes thinking, concept understanding, problem solving, and decision making and remembering from childhood on to adulthood. There are two theories of Cognitive development that offer us two different ways of understanding it. The first is called Domain general. Children aged four or five were not able to say what another person would be able to see from their view; these skills are not gained until the age of around nine years old. 120281576 In stage three we have the concrete operations where children begin to gain some logical reasoning about the world. This stage occurs between seven and twelve years of age according to Piaget. They start to solve conservation problems but are very limited to concrete situations as they find systematic thinking difficult (Piaget, 1972). Stage four is the formal operational stage, ages twelve and above. Children learn to think about abstract ideas logically in this stage. They learn to understand that their behaviour can have different consequences under different condition (Piaget, 2008). There are many critics of Piaget s stage theory, Margaret Donaldson and Hughes to name a few. A problem with his theory is that it proposes a single linear sequence that holds four very broad stages where each person must pass in order to fully develop their cognitive skills (Feldman, 2004). It therefore is too general as it does not give us much detail about the different stages and does not take into account any individual differences at all. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County was one of Mark Twain s first works and it helped people start to notice who he was. This short story was about someone listening to a man telling a story about a gambler and a frog. Although the story itself sounds a bit weird, that was one of the ways of writing that Twain was best known for. The writing style that Twain uses in this work, and many others, helped create his success and makes him a better writer. In this specific short story, the speaker spoke very seriously and casually which countered the tone that was most based on the listener being annoyed that they had to hear his story. This aspect of the story helped contribute more towards Twain s writing style, and his style yet to come.
