Using and Developing OER Workshop
These notes and accompanying Powerpoint slide deck were created for use with university and
college staff universities as part of the Opening Educational Practices in Scotland (OEPS) project
which ran from 2014 – 2017. The workshop design was developed by Pete Cannell. It was based
on feedback from project partners some of whom had attended the OEPS Thinking About Open
Workshop.
These materials are licensed as CC BY 4.0 (unless otherwise stated) and can be adapted, reused
and remixed.
Background reading
There are a host of useful background resources in the OEPS collection. This workshop could be
used as an introduction to either or both of the short open courses ‘How to make an open online
course’ and ‘Becoming An Open Educator’
Notes to accompany the slides
Slide 2: Agenda
Slide 3: A note about the OEPS project
Slide 4: A prompt for the workshop participants to introduce themselves. It’s helpful if they share
their subject background and what they hope to get out of the workshop.
Slide 5: A quick plenary activity – what do you think about when you think about open – go round
the room – try to get everyone to contribute – capture responses on a flipchart.
Slide 6: Review the 5R’s – pause for questions and comments – quick question to the group – how
many were aware of these definitions?
Slide 7: Hands up – we always found it useful to pause for questions and discussion at this point -
there may well be a mix of knowledge of open education among the participants – so for example
it may be the first time that some participants have thought about open licensing and what that
can mean in terms of use and reuse. All these questions won’t be resolved at this point you may
need to revisit them later.
Slide 7: Activity: in groups of 4 – spend ten minutes thinking about the opportunities to using
Open Education and also the challenges – each group records responses on flipchart paper. Post
responses on wall and 5 minutes for participants to stretch their legs, circulate and view each
others responses
Slides 8 and 9: Review some responses to ‘Why Open?’ from another workshop
Slide 10: The range of CC licences – if good internet access could go to www.creativecommons.org
Slide 11: How to choose a licence – us the Creative Commons licence finder tool
1
Slide 12: Where to find OER? Before showing slide ask the participants
Slide 13: Using Google to find openly licensed material - we found surprisingly few lecturers knew
about this. Note that Google and YouTube are the sites most academics use to find resources.
Slide 14: Using YouTube to find openly licensed material.
Slide 15: Review TASL
Slide 16: Return to the challenges of using OER (participant responses should be up and visible in
the room). Open discussion about licensing – how participants understand fair use – are they
convinced of the advantages of using openly licensed materials?
Slide 17: Review OEP
Slide 18: Working through the questions on making and sharing – either in plenary or small groups
as appropriate. if the latter it would be useful for groups to report back using the questions as a
frame.
Slide 19: Review how and when you can mix differently licensed material.
Slide 20: OpenLearn Create an example of a community site that provides educators with a ‘no
strings’ site to create and host open resources and provides tools and guidance to do so.
Slide 21: Links to two courses that cover the workshop material in much greater depth.
Slide 22: Links to the OEPS archive and the OEPS legacy collection.
Postscript
At the end of workshop you’ll have lots of valuable thoughts recorded on flipcharts, post-it notes
etc. It’s a good idea to use a mobile phone camera to capture all the data so that it can be
organised and saved for reference.

Using and developing oer workshop notes

  • 1. Using and Developing OER Workshop These notes and accompanying Powerpoint slide deck were created for use with university and college staff universities as part of the Opening Educational Practices in Scotland (OEPS) project which ran from 2014 – 2017. The workshop design was developed by Pete Cannell. It was based on feedback from project partners some of whom had attended the OEPS Thinking About Open Workshop. These materials are licensed as CC BY 4.0 (unless otherwise stated) and can be adapted, reused and remixed. Background reading There are a host of useful background resources in the OEPS collection. This workshop could be used as an introduction to either or both of the short open courses ‘How to make an open online course’ and ‘Becoming An Open Educator’ Notes to accompany the slides Slide 2: Agenda Slide 3: A note about the OEPS project Slide 4: A prompt for the workshop participants to introduce themselves. It’s helpful if they share their subject background and what they hope to get out of the workshop. Slide 5: A quick plenary activity – what do you think about when you think about open – go round the room – try to get everyone to contribute – capture responses on a flipchart. Slide 6: Review the 5R’s – pause for questions and comments – quick question to the group – how many were aware of these definitions? Slide 7: Hands up – we always found it useful to pause for questions and discussion at this point - there may well be a mix of knowledge of open education among the participants – so for example it may be the first time that some participants have thought about open licensing and what that can mean in terms of use and reuse. All these questions won’t be resolved at this point you may need to revisit them later. Slide 7: Activity: in groups of 4 – spend ten minutes thinking about the opportunities to using Open Education and also the challenges – each group records responses on flipchart paper. Post responses on wall and 5 minutes for participants to stretch their legs, circulate and view each others responses Slides 8 and 9: Review some responses to ‘Why Open?’ from another workshop Slide 10: The range of CC licences – if good internet access could go to www.creativecommons.org Slide 11: How to choose a licence – us the Creative Commons licence finder tool
  • 2. 1 Slide 12: Where to find OER? Before showing slide ask the participants Slide 13: Using Google to find openly licensed material - we found surprisingly few lecturers knew about this. Note that Google and YouTube are the sites most academics use to find resources. Slide 14: Using YouTube to find openly licensed material. Slide 15: Review TASL Slide 16: Return to the challenges of using OER (participant responses should be up and visible in the room). Open discussion about licensing – how participants understand fair use – are they convinced of the advantages of using openly licensed materials? Slide 17: Review OEP Slide 18: Working through the questions on making and sharing – either in plenary or small groups as appropriate. if the latter it would be useful for groups to report back using the questions as a frame. Slide 19: Review how and when you can mix differently licensed material. Slide 20: OpenLearn Create an example of a community site that provides educators with a ‘no strings’ site to create and host open resources and provides tools and guidance to do so. Slide 21: Links to two courses that cover the workshop material in much greater depth. Slide 22: Links to the OEPS archive and the OEPS legacy collection. Postscript At the end of workshop you’ll have lots of valuable thoughts recorded on flipcharts, post-it notes etc. It’s a good idea to use a mobile phone camera to capture all the data so that it can be organised and saved for reference.
