- Europeans are living longer than ever, changing the societal make-up in our cities and regions. The number of older people living in urban environments is growing at an exponential scale, whilst working-age populations are shrinking. A quarter of the population of Europe is 60 years or older The number of people aged 85 years or more is projected to increase from 12.5 million in 2019 to 26.8 million by 2050 The number of centenarians (people aged 100 years or more) is projected to grow from 96k in 2019 to close to half a million (484k) by 2050.
- In the developed world, three-quarters of older persons live in cities. Therefore, making cities age-friendly is one of the most effective policy approaches for responding to demographic ageing. In an age-friendly community, policies, services and structures related to the physical and social environment are designed to support and enable older people to “age actively” Meaning to live in security, enjoy good health and continue to participate fully in society. Public and commercial settings and services are made accessible to accommodate varying levels of ability. This need to create age and gender friendly cities becomes an urgent policy problem. Urban planners are under pressure to create responsive, liveable cities that work for all
- Its clear to Governments everywhere that this demographic shift presents new multi-dimensional challenges around health, mobility, economics and the physical environment.
- Despite being the highest growing demographic in urban areas, older generations don’t engage with urban planning as they feel their views don’t matter They can struggle with the online world, and with bureaucratic city processes Other barriers to participation include illness/disability, loss of contact with friends/relatives and lack of a supportive peer community
- Urbanage project disrupts the status quo through its decision-support Ecosystem for urban planning Solution is co-created by urban planners and older people to ensure it meets the needs of everyone Integrates multidimensional Big Data analysis; modelling and simulation with Artificial Intelligence algorithms, visualization
- Ensures complex and systemic city processes can be better understood by everyone through easy-to-understand Digital Twins and adoption of gamified interfaces The Urbanage Digital Twins are a synchronised, virtual representation of the real word, connecting and mirroring what is happening in near real-time. Make understanding complex and systemic city processes easier to understand Provide a holistic understanding of specific situations and enable simulation modelling of the impact of different actions which can help both urban planners and policy makers, and older citizens, experiment safely with ideas and make optimal decisions about services, and policy actions.

- Helsinki has advanced city service operations, designed for general public needs. But due to aging population, a need to locate accessibility issues, malfunctions in general infrastructure, or change demand, increases, and it is a challenge to ensure safe everyday life for these special groups. The URBANAGE Ecosystem will enable users, seniors, to input and observe points-of-interest (for example suitable doorways, wheelchair ramps, slippery entrances or so) in their districts Smart IoT devices will be used to collect issue findings in real-time, with the user-driven/supported, and in an automatic manner.
- Use case 2: Through evidence-based policy for the older adults based on historical, actual, and predictive information in the social and geographical domain, we want to inform policy-making organs in the public services to improve short and mid-term decisions for older adults. Use Case 1 In Flanders obstacles in the public domain can have a major impact on older adults and people with limitations of mobility. Think of a walkway or road that is interrupted, an event that takes place, etc. Older adults should be informed, in order to organize themselves to cope with these obstacles. There is data about obstacles in the public domain and there is also data about age, physical disabilities, places of residence, and points of interest. Through specific algorithms, it could be determined which people might experience potential nuisance But not all older people are digitally minded. We want to investigate how older people can be informed and what role the network of the older adults can play in this use case to react pro-actively to obstructions in the public domain.
- Setting up a digital twin of the city would allow simulating and obtaining objective comparisons about the relative benefit of a new intervention or the inconveniences and difficulties of public works For example the remodeling of a street could produce many difficulties for a specific segment of the population, in this case, the older population. Having a digital twin of the city will be of great value to make a more objective and deeper multi-criteria analysis to make informed decisions. Furthermore, extending, enriching, and updating the digital twin along time will allow future analysis, comparing the expected with the actual results. The digital twin will be used to simulate simple scenarios such as breakdowns in installations and complex ones, such as remodeling areas of a neighborhood. In relation to the new General Urban Plan, the digital twin will be able to provide objective information based on the most up-to-date data regarding the consequences of each of the options considered in the planning.
- UrbanAge Digital Twins provide a unique opportunity to break down existing data silos, and build more inclusive and resilient European cities for all With advances in technology, and political will, there is no reason why Digital Twins cannot support complex, multi-faceted, age-aware decisions which create healthy and happy places where people can age gracefully
