University Of Michigan Application Essay
Crafting an essay on the University of Michigan application can be a challenging yet rewarding
task. The difficulty lies not only in the need to showcase your academic achievements,
extracurricular activities, and personal qualities but also in the necessity to align your aspirations
with the unique values and offerings of the university. It requires meticulous research to
understand the university's culture, programs, and opportunities, and then effectively articulating
why you are an ideal fit.
Moreover, the University of Michigan often poses specific essay prompts that demand thoughtful
responses. These prompts may require you to reflect on personal experiences, challenges, or
future goals, adding an additional layer of complexity to the writing process. Balancing
authenticity, creativity, and relevance within the limited word count is a delicate task that many
applicants find challenging.
Additionally, the competition is fierce, and the admissions committee looks for essays that not
only stand out but also convey a genuine sense of passion and purpose. This adds pressure to
applicants, making the writing process more demanding.
Despite the challenges, writing an essay for the University of Michigan application is an
opportunity to express yourself and demonstrate your unique qualities. It requires careful
planning, multiple drafts, and perhaps seeking feedback from peers or mentors. Successful
essays often involve a combination of introspection, storytelling, and a clear connection between
your past experiences and future aspirations.
In conclusion, tackling a University of Michigan application essay demands time, effort, and a
deep understanding of both your own narrative and the university's ethos. It is a task that goes
beyond mere academic achievements, requiring a careful balance of self-expression and
alignment with the values of the institution.

The Life of Charlemagne by Einhard
Charlemagne is described by Janet Nelson as being a role model for Einhard.
Einhard himself writes in the first paragraph of The Life of Charlemagne, After I
decided to write about the life, character and no small part of the accomplishments
of my lord and foster father, Charles, that most excellent and deservedly famous
king, I determined to do so with as much brevity as I could. I feel that these are
sincere words about the man who cared for Einhard. I feel that Einhard s purpose for
writing The Life of Charlemagneis to praise the works of his foster father and create
a historical document that would describe the great deeds of Charlemagne so that he
would not be forgotten throughout time as a great leader and man. After... Show more

After he had taken the imperial title, since he saw that many things were lacking in
the laws of his people (for the Franks have two laws, very different in many places),
he thought of supplying what was lacking and reconciling their differences and of
correcting what was bad or wrongly expressed. But he did nothing more than add a
few chapters to the law, and they were unfinished. He did, however, order that the
laws of all peoples under his rule which were not written should be written down.
He also encouraged Romanesque building and architecture and was studying the
languages of Latin and Greek which were spoken amongst the Romans. He was not
simply content with his native tongue but even spent time learning foreign
languages. Of these he learned Latin well enough to pray in it as much as in his
own native language, but he was able to understand Greek better than he could
speak it. He was so fluent that he even seemed verbose. Einhard continues to go on
and describe how Charlemagne encouraged studious behavior and his attempt to
preserve learning in his community, which very much emulates Roman society.
However he was not solely emulative of Roman cultural, he also encompassed many
aspects of his German heritage. Einhard follows the account of Charlemagne s
codification of the laws with, He also ordered that the very old German songs, in

Reflective essay -Counselling session
Introduction. In this reflective essay I will provide an analysis of the counselling
session I conducted and recorded. This will include a summary of the session. I
will also describe the micro and advanced counselling skills utalised, as well as a
critical evaluation of their effectiveness. A discussion of my application of these
skills, as well as areas of possible improvement will supported by reference to
relevant literature. Summary of the session. Leesa is a 37 year old woman who I
have seen around four months previously. At the previous session Leesa spoke of
her frustrations at work and of her hopes of securing a promotion. Leesa s
presentation was one of lethargy consistent with someone who was suffering feelings

It also conveyed that I was empathetic towards her situation. Geldard and Geldard
(2009) explain that minimal responses not only convey that the counselor is
listening, they can also be used to convey a message, such as surprise, agreement
or even to challenge what has been said. The meaning of these minimal responses
is also influenced greatly upon the delivery of them. Tone of voice, facial
expression, posture and eye movement all help to determine the way in which these
messages are received. An example of a minimal response I made that conveyed
empathy would have been; when the client was describing her feelings of not being
respected in her workplace and I responded by saying: sounds horrible . This short
response did not interrupt the flow of conversation, and encouraged the client to
continue. My tone of voice and facial expressions were also congruent with someone
who empathized and was interested in what was being said. Reflective Listening.
Summarising, paraphrasing and reflection of feelings are all examples of counselling
micro skills that let the client know that the counselor is listening and understanding
them correctly. Although it is important to try to respond accurately it is not essential
as an incorrect response can encourage the client to re think what they have said and
then clarify it, possibly resulting
Tri Part Theory
The Tri part Theory of the Soul consist of the four virtues in which help establish an
ideal state with no corruption, the 4 virtues are wisdom, courage, temperance, and
justice. According to Plato the first three needed to be understood in order for justice
to be understood as well. The first virtue is wisdom which is the possession of
knowledge and prudence in listening to council is found in the act of guardianship,
which would then stand in for the virtueof rulers. The second virtue is courage which
is bravery and holding fast to educated convictions in the face of adversity which is
the virtue of soldier. And example of courage would be Socrateswilling to die for
something he believed in. The third virtue which need to be understood... Show more

When we don t practice this temperance we become a slave to oneself in which we
rely on another person or have let our virtue go in which the better part is
overwhelmed by the worse. The fourth virtue is justice, which is the virtue of entire
city when they work in unison, which can only be understood if the first three are
virtues are understood by their proper class citizens. The virtue of justice in the city is
when each class performs their proper function and not interfere with others. When
they don t perform their duty/ techne that is when we find corruption and self
ambition. Similarly, we have justice in an individual in which the human soul is
divided into 3 parts: mind, heart, and appetites. A human is just when each part of
the soul is performing its function. The mind is the rational part of the body that is
to rule over the rest in which the virtue of the mind is wisdom. The heart is the will
power that assists the mind in ruling the body. The body is the mediator to keep
order in which the virtue of the heart is courage to keep brave. The appetites is the
desire of the flesh. For appetizers we must exercise the virtue of temperance so they
do not control
God Is The God Of Wine And Parties
Dionysus is the god of wine and parties. He is the son of Semele, a mortal, and
Zeus, god of the sky and ruler of all the gods. There have been many similarities
between Dionysus and Jesus made by people throughout history yet we have to
wonder why do we need Dionysus? He is not exactly the most moral god ever. Is he
actually important and necessary in Greek mythology? Does his danger outweigh his
importance and necessity? What is the play telling us about sanity and insanity?
There have been so many similarities throughout history noted between Dionysus in
The Bacchae and Jesus in The Bible. Some similarities include their births, people
wanting to kill them as infants, others disbelief that they are gods, the persecution
because others do not believe in their divinity, and their rebirths.
Both gods were born to virgins and miraculously conceived without sex. When
Semele told others about her pregnancy, she was mocked. They said that Dionysus
was no son of Zeus, but Semele had slept beside a man in love. Cadmus lied to
protect his daughter s name. (Euripides 20, 28). In the book of Matthew, Mary
conceives a child through the Holy Spirit while she was still betrothed to Joseph
(Matthew 1:18).
Both gods lives were in danger as infants. When Dionysus was born Zeus s wife,
Hera, was furious Zeus had had another affair and tried to throw Dionysus down
Mount Olympus. Zeus hid Dionysus and gave Hera a [baby] molded piece of the
ether that encircles the Earth (Hathaway 247)
Patrick s Sacrifice
Please accept my warmest regards in this time of need for you and your family.
Specialist Patrick E. Boss gave the ultimate sacrifice for his family, friends,
brothers in the military, and this great country you and I call home. He will be
truly missed in your home, and also in our ranks within the battalion. Patrick s
sacrifice will resonate for many years to come. Patrick gave his life so that you
and I can be free and for that we can never thank him enough. As you know Patrick

your son after he was struck. Patrick was not vocal when he was struck, but was
conscious throughout the ordeal. Do to the amount of blood loss Patrick was
unable to be saved. Every effort was made to protect and save Patrick s life while

deceased by Dr. Joe Smith. At this time the incident is under investigation to
determine what happened while Patrick s unit was out on their convoy, so that
future incidents like the one that happened to your son can be prevented. I feel
that is very important for you to know that Patrick s death is not in vein and, that
Patrick passed doing what we are all grateful for which is protecting the freedom of
the United States of America. Patrick will be truly missed within our battalion and

Smokers in Great Britain and the United States
Introduction
Referring to smoking, different countries have different attitudes towards the habit.
Some countries have strong negative altitude against smoking while others do not. In
both America and United Kingdom, smokers are seen as social pariahs while in Hong
Kong, the altitude towards smokers is not strict (Diagnostic and statistical manual of
mental disorders, 2013). However, the only one similar attitude between all the three
countries is that they all disapprove smoking. This paper will explore the statement

Smoking is a risk factor for many diseases including lung cancer, chronic lung
cancer and other cancers. 90% of cases of lung cancer are attributed to smoking
(Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, 2013). Additionally,
smoking increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases in women and men aged
between 35 and 69 (Owing, 2005). Smoking accounts for 25% and 30% of cases all
cardiovascular diseases in young adults in the America and Britain respectively. This
number is big when compared to Hong Kong which as 12%. 15% to 20% of all cases
of cancer are caused by smoking in both the America and Britain (Gilman and
Zhou, 2004). Smoking causes 75% of cases of chronic cancer including
emphysema and bronchitis. Smoking increases the risk of lung diseases as it
damages the airway and alveoli. In other words, the rate of morbidity in both
America and Britain as a result of smoking is very high and this is why the two
countries have taken the habit very serious by treating all smokers as social pariahs
(Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, 2013).
In as much as there is a big difference in attitude to smoking in the America and
Britain with attitudes in Hong Kong, there are also several similarities between the
same. First, the attitudes are the same when it comes to the need of stipulating
measures of dealing with the practice. Policies
Forsaken Promises
What does the future hold? What will happen at the end of the age? Will the church
be raptured up into Heaven or will the church remain on Earth? Are the Jews still
God s chosen people? Has the church replaced Israel? These and other questions have
been asked since Jesus left Earth and ascended into Heaven. Since that day Christians
have been looking and longing with eager anticipation for the return of Christ. The
study of the return of Christ, or last things, is known as Eschatology, and within
Eschatology there are several schools of thought concerning the Church and Israel.
These schools of thought are known as Covenant and Dispensational Theology. Two
similar schools of thought within Dispensational theology are known as Classical and

Boice writes, In the OT there is the creation of an ekklesia, an assembly of those
who are called out of a normal relationship to the world in order to be a special
people of God. The church is not Plan B in God s plan of salvation but rather was
hinted at in the OT through the calling out of Abraham and Israel but was not fully
realized until the NT. Blaising argues this point when he writes, The church is seen
less and less as a parenthesis in the divine program. Instead it is seen as vitally
linked to and comprehended in the plan of God revealed in the Old Testament. The
sharp line which is drawn between the Church and Israel is dulled within PD as this
view attempts to harmonize the two Testaments into one unifying work of God
throughout all of history.
TD views the church as in a parenthetical relationship with God and His plan for
Israel. TD taught that the offer to the kingdom of Israel was genuine, but it was also
conditional and contingent on the nations response, when Israel choose to reject the
Messiah, the offer of Jesus Christ was offered to the Gentiles and the kingdom did not
immediately appear but was postponed. TD argue that had the Israelites accepted the
Messiah the Kingdom would have begun immediately, however, since Israel rejected
Jesus the offer went to the Gentiles. Therefore, since

Commission ________________________________________ Objective Inform the
Mayor about the Child Welfare Agency and propose solutions to the issues at hand.
________________________________________ As you know, the Agency has
recently come under fire from the press because of a number of issues that have
come to fruition within the Agency. To highlight a few of the issues, they include
the death and arrest of two of our clients as well as a number of news agencies
reporting negatively about our personnel. Upon further review of these issues,
there appears to be more complexities that need to be addressed on both an internal
and external level. Issues This past week, two failed cases occurred days in
between each other. Eight year old Michelle Moore was found in what has been
deemed a homicide in her Newark home and twelve year old, Genesis Rincon was
arrested for possession of narcotics with intent to distribute. These two clients were
both supposed to be under the supervision of our case managers. Upon the conduction
of an internal review from our Inspector General, it was found that not only did these
caseworkers have a higher amount of absenteeism regarding client check ups but one
of the caseworkers is romantically involved with her superior an Assistant
Commissioner who was recently transferred from a different department.
Education Reform
Throughout history, reforms look differently based on the motivations of the
reformers ( Education Reform, n.d.). Educational reform consists of changes that are
made in public education ( Education Reform, n.d.). Education reform involves any
and all changes in the way a school or schooldistrict functions, from teaching
methods and any administrative processes. Educational reform is used as an ancillary
for needed economic changes in the United States ( EducationReform, n.d.).
Education reformers want to have curriculum standards tied to testscores ( Education
Reform, n.d.). Many reformers have focused on changing society by reforming
education on more humanistic, scientific, and even democratic philosophies (
Education Reform, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the funding is not available then the reform becomes a burden as opposed to an
aid (Chen, 2015). The National Association of State Boards of Education
(NASBE) estimated that the program would cost $7 billion dollars over a seven
year period in order for all states to develop and implement the testing programs
outlined in the NCLB Act (Chen, 2015). However, the NCLB budget only
authorized $400 million dollars to go towards helping the states design and
implement the tests which meant the schools would be responsible for more than
$6 billion dollars (Chen, 2015). A second disadvantage is that schools began to
focus on reading and math (Chen, 2015). Students were not provided with a well
rounded education (Chen, 2015). Some schools cut back on science and art in order
to focus on English and math (Chen, 2015). Some teachers voiced that education is
not really improving (Chen, 2015). They believe that other subjects were sacrificed
in order for schools to have proficiency in the subject areas that were being tested
(Chen, 2015).
No Child Left Behind (NCLB) was the largest showing of irresponsibility from
policymakers (Rothstein, 2008). The implementation of NCLB narrowed the
curriculum and has caused more harm than good to the student population (Rothstein,
2008). Since the implementation of NCLB school systems have focused on reading
and math, while neglecting art,
Character Analysis Of Victor Frankenstein
Within this novel, our main character is the scientist Victor Frankenstein. His
curiosity and will to make the dead, well become alive, is what drives him to want
to succeed. His never ending curiosity of the fundamentals of the human body has
kept him pushing further, even losing sleep and his health decline. He strives to feed
that will, and when he does in fact succeed, he is astonished at to what he has created,
but appalled by its looks and inhuman demeanor.
Within the novel, in chapter 5, he is able to create and succeed at his lifelong dream.
In doing so, he is already regretting what he has done by the end. He create
something that went against what man was made for. He brought the dead and gave
it a life. In his eyes, wasting time on creating a monstrosity really got to Dr.
Frankenstein, making him distressed, leading him to let it roam free while he rested.
He dreamed of creating something such as the monster, but didn t think far enough to
what would happen after his success. Leading, to his problematic plot throughout the
rest of the book.
His need to create something that others haven t is evident in his journey
throughout his life. He wished to do something that would amaze others, leave him
in the books. His drive for success took over him, leading him to enclose and
distance himself from society in order to complete what he dreamed of. The
completion of his project led to the disruption of his once peaceful lifestyle. The fall

The Physics Of Thermal Energy
Thermal Energy in Peanuts
Kristin Guenev, Hannah Potter, Rebecca Fluegel
At the ignition of a peanut, how much thermal energy is produced? The same energy
that is emitted at the burning of a single peanut contains the same principles that heat
our homes, cook our food, or why we feel cold in the winter and warm in the summer.
Though much associated with temperature, thermal energy is not the same. If we were
dealing with temperature in our experiment, we would have asked: What is the
change in temperature of water when a peanut is burned? However, thermal energy is
the potential movement of heat from one object of high temperature to lower
temperature.
When comparing a steaming cup of coffee, and an iceberg, the temperatures are
exactly what they seem to be, but the thermal energy of the two objects are the direct
opposite of what they are assumed. Sure, the coffee has more heat, but the iceberg has
more energy.
One of the reasons we chose a peanut, of all things, was the remarkable amount of
thermal energy that it contains. Due to our experiment and the specific heat
equation, Q = mcDT, where Q is the heat flow in calories, m is mass, c is the
specific heat and DT is the temperature difference between the two objects, we
discovered that an average peanut can produce 45.54 calories, or 190.5 joules, which
will further be explained. This conclusion of a single peanut s potential energy was
what attracted our group to the

This paper will explore research results done through the internet and through
published books on the background of the cult group Aum Shinrikyo, now known as
the group Aleph, and several other Sarin gas attacks, to include the terrorist attack
on the Tokyo subway on 20 March 1995. There is a lot of speculation and questions
surrounding this cult group, which will be discussed later, who started out as a

The articles focus on the beginnings of the group as a peaceful yoga group and lead
up to the most recent events with the chemical attacks of the Tokyo subway systems.
Shoko Asahara, who was born Chizuo Matsumoto, during his stay in India in 1986,
while he was on various religious retreats in the Himalayan Mountains, claimed to
have found enlightenment and upon his return to Japan founded the group Aum
Shinrikyo in 1987. The group started out with a small following from the yoga
studio, Aum Shinsen no kai, he and his wife, Kazuko, owned and operated.
Eventually word starting spreading about his so called teachings of the supreme truth
(World Religions and Spirituality Project VCU, Jackie Fowler, 2001). Asahara
claimed that he had the power to read minds and because of his enlightenment,
claimed to have visions or prophesies, as he would call them, about future events.
Asahara started preaching sermons about how his visions showed him that the world
would end by the turn of the 21st century and that the only survivors would be Aum
Shinrikyo members themselves. The group was so obsessed with Armageddon that it
went so far as to try to make it happen themselves.
In March 1993, Asahara gave orders to start production of Sarin gas
The Andromeda Galaxy
The Andromeda Galaxy was named after a mythological Princess named
Andromeda. And it contains approximately one trillion stars and twice more of the
Milky Way s. And is estimated by about 200 400 billion stars. Also this subject is
interesting to me because it shows all the different stars that are connected to each
other and I think that it cool how the color are mix together. And the Andromeda
galaxy, is spanning approximately about 220,000 light years and it is the largest
galaxy that is in our Local Group.

The Democracy And Human Rights
For as long as it has existed, the Chinese government has been power hungry, They
have limited the freedom of citizens so that they can make the decisions themselves,
such as not allowing citizens to vote for government officials. Instead, officials are
simply appointed by others in government. Citizens want reform, protests have
occurred across the country for change to a democratic system so that citizens can
finally elect the people that represent them. This would give citizens more power,
but as result, take some away from the government, which they do not want. The
Chinese government needs to listen to their citizens and change to a democratic
system to give them more freedom and make them happier. The status of democracy
and human rights in China is not where it could be. Both are limited in the
following ways. According to Noah Berlatsky, China s government is authoritarian
and undemocratic. Leaders are for the most part appointed and not elected. Media in
China are regulated, and protest against the government is strictly limited
(Berlatsky). This means that the citizens of China do not have the ability to
influence who is elected. The already appointed government officials decide and
appoint others. The Chinese government also strictly limits protesting. There is a
popular practice known as Falun Gong, which includes exercises and the study of
several books. This was founded by Li Hongzhi in 1992, and by 1998, it had 70
million practitioners. The Chinese
My Failures During My Group Project
Another failure that I faced during this class was working with my group project. I
am not used to having group projects but whenever I did have them, I always
worked with people I knew well. I knew I had to try my best and put effort in
communicating more with my group members. Although, I tried my best to
communicate with others, despite a prolonged or no response. I still failed in asking
questions or clarifying information I was not certain about with my group, during the
meetings. Therefore, causing me to lose time with my work and stressing about my
uncertainties. I did not take the time to think about any questions or comments before
group meetings, as well as ask for help. I thought that communicating over text
messages would be easy,
Between the Bookshelves
I stand on the stone pavement, backpack thrown over my shoulder, weighty book
bag slung across my chest, my suitcase leaning against my leg as though it s too
weary to continue on. I had felt a wild sense of adventure when my parents has

was frozen in fear. I felt alive, spontaneous, and full of bohemian freedom. Now I
just feel lost. You see, this is a strange city. Especially if you come from a small
town in Mid West America. But here I am, standing in front of Shakespeare and
Company Paris, France. I stand on the street in the icy fog, hands trembling and
teeth chattering. Overhead the sky opens up, letting loose a chilling drizzle which
interrupts my thoughts. It s now or never. My heart pounds against my chest as I
take two swift strides towards the door. Before my fingers wrap around the door
knob, it swings open to reveal a young woman. Excusez moi, monsieur. Her cheeks
redden slightly as she steps aside and ducks her head, letting wavy auburn hair fall
across her face like a cascading waterfall. I fidget and clear my throat, unsure of
what to say in response. Please, forgive me, she says again when she notices my
silence. I was in a bit of a rush and didn t see anyone through the window. Her gaze
falls to my suitcase and a soft smile plays across her lips. And you must be Grayson

Bmc Recovery
Abstract The purpose of this experiment was to test the correlation of heart recovery
rates post exercise in both athletes and non athletes and determine which group had
the faster recovery rate. This was accomplished by selecting six non athletes and six
athletes to run one lap around the Fresno Pacific track for two days. Each participant
s resting heartrate was taken before running the lap and instantly after running the lap
as well. Upon completion of the lap their heart ratewas measured in thirty second
intervals and it was noted how long it took to get back down to each initial resting
heart rate again. Due to the athletes training it was hypothesized that they would have
the faster recovery rate because they d be more conditioned... Show more content on

The subjects were given a survey on their health as to avoid injured or asthmatic
variables. Also they were all required to be in the healthy BMI range and the
athletes were from one sport and the non athletes had a strict definition of exercise
as less than twice a week. However, a few errors could have slipped through. For
example when recording the participants heart rate. The pulse was sometimes hard
to locate requiring more time to look for it after their lap run and perhaps lose data
in the process. Another possible error that could have occurred was taking the
recovery times. The majority of the participant trials were done by one project
partner making it difficult to monitor the thirty second intervals while measuring
and recording the heart rates as well. In future studies these errors may be avoided
by requiring all the researchers be present for the experiment in order to secure
more definitive results. Another issue that occurred was the participants failing to
show up, more so in the athlete group, which left a hole in hour experimental data
because we were unable to reach the intended six athlete total due to this issue.
Future researchers should attempt to have all the athlete and non athlete participants
together at one time for each day. This would avoid having to come back day by day
and remember who did one day and who s
Osei Tutu Research Paper
An able military leader, Osei Tutu, won control of the trading city of Kumasi. From
there he conquered neighboring peoples and unified the Asante kingdom. Osei Tutu
had been a hostage in the Denkyera court but had escaped eastward to the powerful
state of Akwamu, where he was exposed to new ideas of political and military
organization. When he returned to Kumasi, some Akwamu accompanied him. One
was a priest, Okomfo Anokye, who is usually given credit for introducing the
legendary Golden Stool, which, according to Asante tradition, was brought down
from heaven by the priest, and, as the repository of the spirit of the nation, became the
symbol of the mystical bond between all Asante. Osei Tutu helped to build up the
Asante kingdom and make it successful.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Asante faced a great challenge in the Denkyera, a powerful neighboring enemy
kingdom. Osei Tutu realized that in order to withstand the Denkyera, the people of
his kingdom needed to be firmly united. To do this, he claimed that his right to rule
came from heaven, and that people in the kingdom were linked by spiritual bonds.
This strategy paid off when the Asante defeated the Denkyera in the late 1600s.
Under Osei Tutu, government officials, chosen by merit rather than by birth,
supervised an efficient bureaucracy. They managed the royal monopolies on gold
mining and the slave trade. A monopoly is the exclusive control of a business or
industry. The Asante traded with Europeans on the coast, exchanging gold and slave
for firearms. They also played rival with Europeans against one another to protect
themselves. In this way they built a wealthy, powerful
Substitution And Elimination Reaction Lab Report
Substitution and Elimination Reactions Substitution reactions replace a functional
group with a new group. These reactions compete with elimination reactions in which
a group is eliminated and a ПЂ (pi) bond is formed. Substitution reactions occur
when a nucleophile is added to an electrophile/substrate. Elimination reactions occur
when a base is added to an electrophile/substrate. The electrophile must contain a
leaving group to be considered a substrate. Alkyl Halides Alkyl Halides are the
common substrate used in substitution and elimination reactions. Alkyl Halides are
halogen containing alkane compounds. These compounds are commonly used as the
electrophile in substitution reactions. Naming Alkyl Halides is similar to naming
alkanes. Halogen substituents are named just like alkane substituents, for example if
there is a chlorine attached to an ethane the chlorine substituent will be named using
the word chloro . The other halogens are named using the words flouro , bromo , and
iodo respectively. These possible substituents are listed alphabetically along with the
alkane substituents. When dealing with alkyl halides it is important to note that the
carbons attached to the halogens and the carbons attached to those carbons are
involved in the reaction process, therefore we designate these carbons with special
symbols to differentiate them from the rest of the molecule. The carbon atom that is
bonded to the halogen is designated the О± (alpha) carbon. The carbons that are

Within industry there is revolution. Innovation for development and a burning desire
for further progression must be realized or risk of failure increases exponentially.
Does consistent hard work not correlate with well earned success? Does perseverance
parallel evolution? The music industry is not impervious to failure and its institutes
must evolve to survive in an ever changing world of technological advancements.
These advancements are utilized and implemented industry wide, including via event
promotion to solidify the future of music as a whole. Event marketing, albeit not a
modern term , has proved vital to the music industrytime and time again as it
constantly evolves as the music industry business model is redefined. Event
marketing and promotion has been defined and consistently redefined as use of

Bill Graham, a Holocaust survivor turned impresario, paved the way for modern
music event promoters at the forefront of the promotion scene in the 1960s. First
starting in theatre, he voices the difficulties he had promoting the Mime Troupe from
the start: Driving the truck down to the Palo Alto and putting up the posters and
selling the tickets. Taking the show down and reloading the truck. I d get home at

Here, a tough start proved to be the framework of Graham s career. Handbills,
postcards and posters were just a few of the marketing materials Graham used to
promote his events. He commissioned artists within
John Hay Open Door Policy
John Hay, the Secretary of State, first articulated the Open Door Policy in 1899.
The Secretary of State s intentions for the Open Door Policy was aimed to secure
international agreements for policy, trade and commerce with China. Prior to John
Hay, American policies with China were conducted under similar principles
however, were not official until he put the policy in writing and proposed it to the
powers in Europe. The Open Door was not an official United Statespolicy but was
considered notes sent between the Far East in the late 1800 s and half of the 1900
s. The Open Door notes were never a policy and were only drafts of notes sent
between John Hayand European countries in an attempt to establish equal trade
commerce and equal port availability regardless of nationality. John Hay battled for
years throughout the 19th century putting these notes into place. He strived to obtain

Hippisley and William E. Rockhill (history.state.gov). Both these men, experts in
China economy, believed that China trades and port access would be best protected
by an agreement. Hippisley and Rockhill suggested an agreement that would provide
a formality in trade and commercial activity among European powers. During the
same time the United States had just won the Spanish American war and had gained
control of Guam, Philippines and Hawaii. With growing economical power, the
United States became increasingly interested in China trade. Hippisley and Rockhill
proposed their ideas to John Hay. Hay would construct and draft the initial agreement.
John Hay sent the preliminary notes of policy to the countries that had an interest in
trades and the ports open around China. These countries included Great Britain,
France, Russia, Germany, and Japan. The original proposition was to establish a free
and open market for equal trading opportunities between all nationalities invested with
Pulp Fiction American Nihilism
Emrose Bhalesha
Critical Summary Paper: Pulp Fiction
Mark Conrad examines the movie, Pulp fiction written and directed by Quentin
Tarantino by looking at the metaphysical quirks lurking within the film through the
use of character transformation and comedic dialogue. Conrad argues that this
film s intention is to describe the loss of value and meaning in people s lives,
specifically American nihilism. He introduces the article by explaining nihilism to
the reader and then explains the term in a biblical sense, he claims that once the
...moral code is lost and not replaced, we are faced with the abyss of nihilism:
darkness closes in on us, and nothing is of any real value any more; there is no real
meaning in our lives. (Conrad). He describes ... Show more content on

He shows examples of comedic dialogue in scenes from Pulp fiction throughout his
article, furthermore he claims that much of the humor is dependent upon uncannily
intelligent dialogue under strange circumstances (Geddes). Geddes explains that the
tone of the movie has no moral to it and that the movie depends on its effects the
violence and threat of violence, the articulateness of its underworld characters, and its
structure (Geddes). The narrator argues that even thought ...this is a thoughtful well
made film , it ...has no moral aspect to it, furthermore Geddes claims that this film is
effective in entertaining an audience through the use of comedic dialogue and the
abundant amount of daytime violence
The Weight Loss Journey For Wrestling
Despite the dangers, thousands of collegiate and high school wrestlers across the
world go on fasting and binge diets, run with several thick layers of clothing on,
spit into a bottle, or even take laxatives so they can weigh a specific amount on
competition day. Health professionals say this type of diet can be dangerous, rules
are set forth to help regulate it, and classmates look at them like they are crazy.
Despite efforts, it s still happening, and some parents allow it and even support it. For
what purpose? To be tougher than the guy standing behind the line in front of you.
The policies on minimum weights and rapid weight loss for athletes should be
removed, because they make the competition unfair and they don t look out for the...

To this day, when I want to stop doing something that is difficult it s much easier to
look back and say, I ve done something harder than this, just finish this up. Also, I
learned to drink water, because we really do need it to live. According to an article
on the New York Times, three collegiate wrestlers died within a three month span in
1997 all from cutting weight (Litsky). Cutting weight is when someone will try to
drastically reduce their weight in a short period of time through a variety of
methods. The deaths of these three collegiate wrestlers resulted in a hasty decision
from the NCAA in an attempt to prevent any more injuries or deaths. An article by
Terry Larimer on The Morning Call explains the that policy banned the use of rubber
suits and saunas for use in weight cutting practices because they drastically increase
body temperature and dehydration, which was the root cause for the deaths of these
three wrestlers (Larimer). Larimer also explains changes the NCAA made to the
weight classes, adding a seven pound weight allowance to all of the weight classes
so that athletes would not have to lose as much weight, with the stipulation that all
weigh in times for competitions would be held 2 hours prior to the event rather than
24 hours (Larimer). This rule was enacted to discourage athletes from cutting weight
on the basis that with less recovery time, losing too much weight will not be
beneficial to the
Christian Mission Book Review Essay
Christian Mission Book Review Part two begins with David Livingstone, a
Scottish missionary, and a professional doctor. He was very interested in
exploration and his main goal was to stop Portuguese and Arab slave trade, he
believed in human self worth. He got his men and his supplies and started his
voyage to Africa to map Africa, he was successful at mapping most of Zambezi.
Livingstone was accused of not being a real missionaryand he was too political but
he always made sure he was working with God in mind. Livingstone died at the
age of 60 in 1873 defending the African s freedom. His people cut out his heart and
buried it, the rest of his body was mummified and taken to Westminster Abbey to be
buried, as he wished. A statue was built in his honor with the base reading,
Missionary, Explorer, Liberator . Livingstone is one example of how much political
and economic power a Christian missionary can have. He also encouraged the work
of the Jesuits in China. The western power and missionaries have created bad names
for the social/cultural changes or for being connected with colonialism, imperialism,
westernity, and modernity mostly by the missionaries. Some say that Christianityhas
challenged or strengthened the local power. Scientific racism first came up in the
1850s Joseph Arthur de Gobineu s book called Essi sur l inegalite des races

There are so many products out there that claim to help with acne care and

Gender And Gender Essay
Social construction of gender is collectively held beliefs. In society we believe that
interaction through language, symbols, color, food, gestures and people, are ways we
create meaning through social interaction. Also, social construction of gender, we
must understand the difference between sex and gender. We use gender as labels for
many reasons on how to address an individual, weather the individual want to be
recognized as him or her. We use gender display to lead others to make attributions
regarding her or his gender, regardless of whether the presented gender corresponds
to the person sex or gender sex identity. It is important to understand the difference
between sex and gender, because a person that may have been born a malebut identify
themselves as a female, it may not bother them if you address them sir or ma am.
Kessler and McKenna stated, that each time we encounter a new person, we make
gender attribution. In most cases this is not difficult. We learn how read people s
genders by learning which traits culturally signify each gender and by learning rules
that enable us to classify individuals with a wide range of gender and presentation
into two and only two gender categories .
In the article What It Mean to be Gendered Me, Lucal stated that been perceived as a
male has gave him male male interactions style that most women are not aware of. He
notices that many men greet, or acknowledge, people (mostly other me) who makes
eye contact with them with a
The Theory Of The Criminal Justice System
The notion that punishment should be equal to the crime is a major philosophy in
the US criminal justice system. However, finding a great balance between justice
and punishment is often a blurred line. Over the past 40 years, the population of
state and federal prisons have risen drastically. Polices such as the war on drugs and
get tough on crimehave caused judges to give out more incarceration years than ever
before. With such are large prisonpopulation, the resources needed to operate is much
greater than ever before. Many in the criminal justicesystem began to question if
excess sentencing is responsible for the failed prison system. This essay will explore
the theories of proportional sentencing and how they could be implement. This essay
will look at the current polices of sentencing and the how theories associated with
proportional sentencing could be used to repair a broken punishment system. The
need for punishment has always been necessary in our world. In the modern justice
system, offenders are judged and punishment by the government and not those whom
the offended. While this approach has taken punishment out of the hand of those
whom have been offended, it is still at its center a type retribution. The theory of
retribution states at its core that criminals deserve to suffer and prisons should make
sure that they suffer for their crimes. The approach does have some good points.
First, this approach focuses on the punishment being equal in
Essay on Organizational Change Management
Organizational Change Management
Significant organizational change occurs when an organization changes its overall
strategy for success, adds or removes a major section or practice, and/or wants to
change the very nature by which it operates. It also occurs when an organization
evolves through various life cycles, just like people must successfully evolve through
life cycles. For organizations to develop, they often must undergo significant change
at various points in their development; hence the topic of organizational change and
development has become widespread in communications about business,
organizations, leadership and management.

In support of principle one, the practice that must accompany it is to align the goals
of a change effort with organizational strategy. An organization s strategic plan
identifies the products and services it delivers and the core business and key
supporting processes that help deliver these products and services. It also identifies
the organization s special competencies and how they enhance the core and key
supporting organizational processes. If the goals of the change effort do not support
the organizational strategy then the change effort will not yield significant value to
the organization.
The Epic EHR supports the business goals of Legacy by promoting preventative
medicine through integrative communication and access, better record keeping, and
improved coordination of health care services, as well as by reducing waste,
inefficiency, and miscommunication. These efforts will reduce the national cost of
health care and lower out of pocket expenses, which are two big aims of Legacy
Health.
Therefore, by aligning the goals of a change effort with the business strategy of an
organization, the change effort will have a greater chance of succeeding because the
change effort will receive greater executive commitment than if the goals were not
aligned. In sum, the commitment of executive level management

Jane Eyre was published during a time when the treatment of females was not so

Early Christian Traditions
The history of the New Testament canon is even more colorful. During the first few
hundred years of the early Christian era, there was no official canon that the entire
Christian world recognized. The Eastern and Western church traditions each used a
differing list of books as scripture. Before 200 a.d., the Church fathers did not even
mention Philemon, 2 Peter, 2 and 3 John, and Jude. The status of these books was
murky at best until after 400 a.d..
On the other hand, the Epistle of Barnabas, the Apocalypse of Peter, the Shepherd of
Hermas, the Didache, the Acts of Paul and the First Letter of Clement were
considered by many Church fathers to be part of the early Christian scriptures.

Irenaeus, reacting to Marcion, tried to establish his own canon. Since there were a
number of gospels at that time, he decided that there should only be four because
there are only four winds and four corners of the earth. Other Church fathers who
followed Irenaeus accepted his decision. Eusebius of Caesarea (260 339 a.d.) listed
four categories of books.
1.The recognized books (the four gospels, Acts, fourteen letters of Paul, 1 Peter, 1
John, Revelation [?]).
2.The disputed books (James, 2 Peter, 2, 3 John, and Jude). Paul s authorship of
Hebrews is questioned by many modern Biblical scholars, in spite the fact that
Clement of Rome (quoted by Eusebius) said that the epistle to the Hebrews is Paul s.
Hebrews is theologically and conceptually connected with Paul while the same time,
the grammar and vocabulary are quite different from Paul s other books.
3.The spurious books (Acts of Paul, Shepherd of Hermas, Apocalypse of Peter,
Epistle of Barnabas, Didache, Gospel of Hebrews, Revelation [?]).
4.The heretical forgeries.
Eusebius accepted 1 and 2 Timothy, Titus, and the letter to Hebrews. In fact, he was
the first to declare Hebrews legitimate. There are two possible options that explain

Bottle Rocket Lab
Introduction The purpose of this lab is to show how the quantity of wings effects
the height a 2 oz. bottle rocket launches into the air. The wings have a vital effect on
the flight of the rocket. The fins keep the rocket stabilized and going in the right
direction. The way that the fins do this is the same way that the feathers on an arrow
keep it flying straight. The increased dragon the back end of the fuselage of the
rocket, keeps the back end in the back.
Experimental Design
Will the number of fins effect how height the rocket flies into the air?
The independent variable is the number of wings
The dependent variable is how high the rocket flies
The control is the blank rocket launched by Mrs. Still
Hypothesis
If the number of fins stays at 3 (an average number) then the rocket will fly to its
ideal height, because too many fins would be too much drag on the back of the
rocket, while too few would not be enough to keep the rocket balanced.
Test Materials

3 3 x5 fins
4.5 x8 tall, cone shaped capsule
15 x2 x2 parachute
2 wide black Duct Tape

The amount of wings was an important piece of data, seeing as it was what the

and wanted the freedom of choice, rather than having to make a rocket by specific
standards. I feel that this could ve been helped if instead, the experimental question
was weight related, as that would imply more freedom to make the rocket how the

The International Coffee Organization, Free Trade, And...
Did you know that coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world?
Second to oil, the coffee industry employs millions of people to trade, process,
grow, and produce coffee (BBC News). In this paper I will address if the coffee
industry is fair to its producers and consumers. I will also discuss different fiscal
organizations that directly affect the coffee industry s prices like the International
Coffee Organization, World Trade Organization, Free Trade, and Fair Trade. I will
also touch upon of the coffee industry influences farmers, middleman, and consumers.
In 1963, the International Coffee Organization (ICO) was established. The ICO was
first made to assist the economies in Africa and South America. This organization
abides by international agreements made under the supervision of the United
Nations. The ICO is the most effective agreement produced to control the supply of
coffee. These agreements contributed a quota system and price control that benefited
both importing and exporting nations. Not only was the ICO fair to both sides, it
also provided a fair price to the consumer which resulted in the rise in consumption
(The Economics of Coffee).
Shockingly, most of the success of the ICO was allocated to the United States. The
United States helped enforce the quota system to help provide a stabilized economy
for poor Latin American countries. Enforcing the agreements also prevented
communism in these countries. Once the United States withdrew from the

Lessons from a Third World Perspective on Environmentalism
Possibly more than any of the other articles we have read so far,
Ramachandra Guha s article Radical Environmentalism and Wilderness
Preservation: A Third World Critique made me think. In analyzing the
Western deep ecology movement, he criticized its focus on preservation of
wild areas. By doing this, he was directly criticizing what I have long
thought of as my main goal as an environmentalist. One of the first
things that turned me on to environmental issues when I was younger was my
horror at the soaring rate of rainforest destruction so dramatically
portrayed to us in 9th grade biology class. Since then, by following a
biology track ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But reading the article, I was struck by
what we can learn from each other and from where we overlap.
Guha s article critiqued the four main tenants of deep ecology
(which are, as he sees them,: a shift from anthropocentric to biocentric
ethics, a focus on preservation of wilderness, an invocation of Eastern
spiritual traditions, and a perception of being the vanguard of current
environmentalism) in order to show that, as is, deep ecology would only
meet its goals at the expense of the Third World. He gave the example of
Project Tiger in India, in which Western preservationists organizations
encouraged the designation of a network of parks to preserve the tiger s
habitat but only by moving whole villages of people and prohibiting them
from using the land (272). Of course, this type of conflict between
protecting the habitat of an endangered species and letting the land be
used by locals does not only occur in Third World contexts it is a common
debate, including of course the famous Spotted Owl example within our own
country.
Although it seems clear that a conflict between anthropocentric and
biocentric world views is at work here, Guha claims that the dichotomy is
useless (271). I have also seen it as somewhat problematic, even from my

There are several tropical areas that are most commonly linked to academic
performance including student s role performance factors, school factors, family
factors, and peer factors. Students Role Performance (SRP) is how well an individual
fulfils the role of a student in an educational setting.
Sex ,race, school effort ,extra curricular activities ,deviance and disabilities are all
important influences on SRP and have been shown to affect test scores .School
environmental factors ,such as school size ,neighborhood, and relationship between
teachers and students also influence test scores (Johnson Elder ,2004).
One s own family background has also been found to influence a students test scores

Peer influences can also affect student performance. Peer pressure and peer

New Zealand Ministry Of Justice Essay
On 6 February 1840, representatives of the British Crown and numerous Maori
chiefs united in the ceremony of the signing of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi / Treaty of
Waitangi documentation in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand, (New Zealand Ministry
of Justice, 2015). (1) This, signified the official colonisation of New Zealandand with
this the promise of certain principles that were to be upheld by the British law,
including that of Protection, Participation and Partnership, for all citizens now
unified under the British Crown (MOH, 2000b). (2)
Controversially, due to translational implications the true intention and meaning of
the Te Tiriti o Waitangi / Treaty of Waitangihas been often contested due to the Maori
losing much of their Autonomy along with their cultural history, this adversely
affecting Maori spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical health outcomes, both
individually as well as within the family structure, which is still evident 175 years

Along with colonisation, many foreign diseases such as measles, mumps,

for Maori as their immune systems were yet to develop antibodies and immunity to
the newly introduced pathogens, (Pool, 2012). Concurrently, this resulted in a high
morbidity and mortality rate around the end of the 1800s, as according to statistics,
the Maori population declined in number from approximately 100,000 in 1767,

Longboards And Skateboards
For the longest time people believed that skateboards and longboards are the same
thing. They all thought that they all can do tricks and flips. But to the contrary
despite the fact that longboards and skateboards share four wheels and a deck, they
are both very different because they both have their intended uses. Skateboards and
Longboards share a similar structure. They both share four wheels that contain
bearings that allows the wheels to continuously spin for a while. They both share
trucks that contain bushings that act as a cushion that allows the board to turn
smoothly. They both share a deck that is usually made from plywood. Other boards
would be made out of bamboo. Longboards are more meant for transportation.
Longboards are primarily

  • 2. The Life of Charlemagne by Einhard Charlemagne is described by Janet Nelson as being a role model for Einhard. Einhard himself writes in the first paragraph of The Life of Charlemagne, After I decided to write about the life, character and no small part of the accomplishments of my lord and foster father, Charles, that most excellent and deservedly famous king, I determined to do so with as much brevity as I could. I feel that these are sincere words about the man who cared for Einhard. I feel that Einhard s purpose for writing The Life of Charlemagneis to praise the works of his foster father and create a historical document that would describe the great deeds of Charlemagne so that he would not be forgotten throughout time as a great leader and man. After... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After he had taken the imperial title, since he saw that many things were lacking in the laws of his people (for the Franks have two laws, very different in many places), he thought of supplying what was lacking and reconciling their differences and of correcting what was bad or wrongly expressed. But he did nothing more than add a few chapters to the law, and they were unfinished. He did, however, order that the laws of all peoples under his rule which were not written should be written down. He also encouraged Romanesque building and architecture and was studying the languages of Latin and Greek which were spoken amongst the Romans. He was not simply content with his native tongue but even spent time learning foreign languages. Of these he learned Latin well enough to pray in it as much as in his own native language, but he was able to understand Greek better than he could speak it. He was so fluent that he even seemed verbose. Einhard continues to go on and describe how Charlemagne encouraged studious behavior and his attempt to preserve learning in his community, which very much emulates Roman society. However he was not solely emulative of Roman cultural, he also encompassed many aspects of his German heritage. Einhard follows the account of Charlemagne s codification of the laws with, He also ordered that the very old German songs, in which the deeds and wars of
  • 3. Reflective essay -Counselling session Introduction. In this reflective essay I will provide an analysis of the counselling session I conducted and recorded. This will include a summary of the session. I will also describe the micro and advanced counselling skills utalised, as well as a critical evaluation of their effectiveness. A discussion of my application of these skills, as well as areas of possible improvement will supported by reference to relevant literature. Summary of the session. Leesa is a 37 year old woman who I have seen around four months previously. At the previous session Leesa spoke of her frustrations at work and of her hopes of securing a promotion. Leesa s presentation was one of lethargy consistent with someone who was suffering feelings of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It also conveyed that I was empathetic towards her situation. Geldard and Geldard (2009) explain that minimal responses not only convey that the counselor is listening, they can also be used to convey a message, such as surprise, agreement or even to challenge what has been said. The meaning of these minimal responses is also influenced greatly upon the delivery of them. Tone of voice, facial expression, posture and eye movement all help to determine the way in which these messages are received. An example of a minimal response I made that conveyed empathy would have been; when the client was describing her feelings of not being respected in her workplace and I responded by saying: sounds horrible . This short response did not interrupt the flow of conversation, and encouraged the client to continue. My tone of voice and facial expressions were also congruent with someone who empathized and was interested in what was being said. Reflective Listening. Summarising, paraphrasing and reflection of feelings are all examples of counselling micro skills that let the client know that the counselor is listening and understanding them correctly. Although it is important to try to respond accurately it is not essential as an incorrect response can encourage the client to re think what they have said and then clarify it, possibly resulting
  • 4. Tri Part Theory The Tri part Theory of the Soul consist of the four virtues in which help establish an ideal state with no corruption, the 4 virtues are wisdom, courage, temperance, and justice. According to Plato the first three needed to be understood in order for justice to be understood as well. The first virtue is wisdom which is the possession of knowledge and prudence in listening to council is found in the act of guardianship, which would then stand in for the virtueof rulers. The second virtue is courage which is bravery and holding fast to educated convictions in the face of adversity which is the virtue of soldier. And example of courage would be Socrateswilling to die for something he believed in. The third virtue which need to be understood... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When we don t practice this temperance we become a slave to oneself in which we rely on another person or have let our virtue go in which the better part is overwhelmed by the worse. The fourth virtue is justice, which is the virtue of entire city when they work in unison, which can only be understood if the first three are virtues are understood by their proper class citizens. The virtue of justice in the city is when each class performs their proper function and not interfere with others. When they don t perform their duty/ techne that is when we find corruption and self ambition. Similarly, we have justice in an individual in which the human soul is divided into 3 parts: mind, heart, and appetites. A human is just when each part of the soul is performing its function. The mind is the rational part of the body that is to rule over the rest in which the virtue of the mind is wisdom. The heart is the will power that assists the mind in ruling the body. The body is the mediator to keep order in which the virtue of the heart is courage to keep brave. The appetites is the desire of the flesh. For appetizers we must exercise the virtue of temperance so they do not control
  • 5. God Is The God Of Wine And Parties Dionysus is the god of wine and parties. He is the son of Semele, a mortal, and Zeus, god of the sky and ruler of all the gods. There have been many similarities between Dionysus and Jesus made by people throughout history yet we have to wonder why do we need Dionysus? He is not exactly the most moral god ever. Is he actually important and necessary in Greek mythology? Does his danger outweigh his importance and necessity? What is the play telling us about sanity and insanity? There have been so many similarities throughout history noted between Dionysus in The Bacchae and Jesus in The Bible. Some similarities include their births, people wanting to kill them as infants, others disbelief that they are gods, the persecution because others do not believe in their divinity, and their rebirths. Both gods were born to virgins and miraculously conceived without sex. When Semele told others about her pregnancy, she was mocked. They said that Dionysus was no son of Zeus, but Semele had slept beside a man in love. Cadmus lied to protect his daughter s name. (Euripides 20, 28). In the book of Matthew, Mary conceives a child through the Holy Spirit while she was still betrothed to Joseph (Matthew 1:18). Both gods lives were in danger as infants. When Dionysus was born Zeus s wife, Hera, was furious Zeus had had another affair and tried to throw Dionysus down Mount Olympus. Zeus hid Dionysus and gave Hera a [baby] molded piece of the ether that encircles the Earth (Hathaway 247)

Some countries have strong negative altitude against smoking while others do not. In both America and United Kingdom, smokers are seen as social pariahs while in Hong Kong, the altitude towards smokers is not strict (Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, 2013). However, the only one similar attitude between all the three countries is that they all disapprove smoking. This paper will explore the statement Smokers in Great Britain and the United States are increasingly treated as social pariahs . Smoking is a risk factor for many diseases including lung cancer, chronic lung cancer and other cancers. 90% of cases of lung cancer are attributed to smoking (Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, 2013). Additionally, smoking increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases in women and men aged between 35 and 69 (Owing, 2005). Smoking accounts for 25% and 30% of cases all cardiovascular diseases in young adults in the America and Britain respectively. This number is big when compared to Hong Kong which as 12%. 15% to 20% of all cases of cancer are caused by smoking in both the America and Britain (Gilman and Zhou, 2004). Smoking causes 75% of cases of chronic cancer including emphysema and bronchitis. Smoking increases the risk of lung diseases as it damages the airway and alveoli. In other words, the rate of morbidity in both America and Britain as a result of smoking is very high and this is why the two countries have taken the habit very serious by treating all smokers as social pariahs (Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, 2013). In as much as there is a big difference in attitude to smoking in the America and Britain with attitudes in Hong Kong, there are also several similarities between the same. First, the attitudes are the same when it comes to the need of stipulating measures of dealing with the practice. Policies
  • 8. Forsaken Promises What does the future hold? What will happen at the end of the age? Will the church be raptured up into Heaven or will the church remain on Earth? Are the Jews still God s chosen people? Has the church replaced Israel? These and other questions have been asked since Jesus left Earth and ascended into Heaven. Since that day Christians have been looking and longing with eager anticipation for the return of Christ. The study of the return of Christ, or last things, is known as Eschatology, and within Eschatology there are several schools of thought concerning the Church and Israel. These schools of thought are known as Covenant and Dispensational Theology. Two similar schools of thought within Dispensational theology are known as Classical and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Boice writes, In the OT there is the creation of an ekklesia, an assembly of those who are called out of a normal relationship to the world in order to be a special people of God. The church is not Plan B in God s plan of salvation but rather was hinted at in the OT through the calling out of Abraham and Israel but was not fully realized until the NT. Blaising argues this point when he writes, The church is seen less and less as a parenthesis in the divine program. Instead it is seen as vitally linked to and comprehended in the plan of God revealed in the Old Testament. The sharp line which is drawn between the Church and Israel is dulled within PD as this view attempts to harmonize the two Testaments into one unifying work of God throughout all of history. TD views the church as in a parenthetical relationship with God and His plan for Israel. TD taught that the offer to the kingdom of Israel was genuine, but it was also conditional and contingent on the nations response, when Israel choose to reject the Messiah, the offer of Jesus Christ was offered to the Gentiles and the kingdom did not immediately appear but was postponed. TD argue that had the Israelites accepted the Messiah the Kingdom would have begun immediately, however, since Israel rejected Jesus the offer went to the Gentiles. Therefore, since

Outline Of The Welfare Agency MEMO TO: Mayor Monty Python FROM: Commissioner Dimitri Henry CC:Deputy Mayor Quintin Haynes RE: Proposed Solutions to the Welfare Commission ________________________________________ Objective Inform the Mayor about the Child Welfare Agency and propose solutions to the issues at hand. ________________________________________ As you know, the Agency has recently come under fire from the press because of a number of issues that have come to fruition within the Agency. To highlight a few of the issues, they include the death and arrest of two of our clients as well as a number of news agencies reporting negatively about our personnel. Upon further review of these issues, there appears to be more complexities that need to be addressed on both an internal and external level. Issues This past week, two failed cases occurred days in between each other. Eight year old Michelle Moore was found in what has been deemed a homicide in her Newark home and twelve year old, Genesis Rincon was arrested for possession of narcotics with intent to distribute. These two clients were both supposed to be under the supervision of our case managers. Upon the conduction of an internal review from our Inspector General, it was found that not only did these caseworkers have a higher amount of absenteeism regarding client check ups but one of the caseworkers is romantically involved with her superior an Assistant Commissioner who was recently transferred from a different department.
  • 10. Education Reform Throughout history, reforms look differently based on the motivations of the reformers ( Education Reform, n.d.). Educational reform consists of changes that are made in public education ( Education Reform, n.d.). Education reform involves any and all changes in the way a school or schooldistrict functions, from teaching methods and any administrative processes. Educational reform is used as an ancillary for needed economic changes in the United States ( EducationReform, n.d.). Education reformers want to have curriculum standards tied to testscores ( Education Reform, n.d.). Many reformers have focused on changing society by reforming education on more humanistic, scientific, and even democratic philosophies ( Education Reform, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the funding is not available then the reform becomes a burden as opposed to an aid (Chen, 2015). The National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) estimated that the program would cost $7 billion dollars over a seven year period in order for all states to develop and implement the testing programs outlined in the NCLB Act (Chen, 2015). However, the NCLB budget only authorized $400 million dollars to go towards helping the states design and implement the tests which meant the schools would be responsible for more than $6 billion dollars (Chen, 2015). A second disadvantage is that schools began to focus on reading and math (Chen, 2015). Students were not provided with a well rounded education (Chen, 2015). Some schools cut back on science and art in order to focus on English and math (Chen, 2015). Some teachers voiced that education is not really improving (Chen, 2015). They believe that other subjects were sacrificed in order for schools to have proficiency in the subject areas that were being tested (Chen, 2015). No Child Left Behind (NCLB) was the largest showing of irresponsibility from policymakers (Rothstein, 2008). The implementation of NCLB narrowed the curriculum and has caused more harm than good to the student population (Rothstein, 2008). Since the implementation of NCLB school systems have focused on reading and math, while neglecting art,
  • 11. Character Analysis Of Victor Frankenstein Within this novel, our main character is the scientist Victor Frankenstein. His curiosity and will to make the dead, well become alive, is what drives him to want to succeed. His never ending curiosity of the fundamentals of the human body has kept him pushing further, even losing sleep and his health decline. • 12. The Physics Of Thermal Energy Thermal Energy in Peanuts Kristin Guenev, Hannah Potter, Rebecca Fluegel At the ignition of a peanut, how much thermal energy is produced? The same energy that is emitted at the burning of a single peanut contains the same principles that heat our homes, cook our food, or why we feel cold in the winter and warm in the summer. Though much associated with temperature, thermal energy is not the same. If we were dealing with temperature in our experiment, we would have asked: What is the change in temperature of water when a peanut is burned? However, thermal energy is the potential movement of heat from one object of high temperature to lower temperature. When comparing a steaming cup of coffee, and an iceberg, the temperatures are exactly what they seem to be, but the thermal energy of the two objects are the direct opposite of what they are assumed. Sure, the coffee has more heat, but the iceberg has more energy. One of the reasons we chose a peanut, of all things, was the remarkable amount of thermal energy that it contains. Due to our experiment and the specific heat equation, Q = mcDT, where Q is the heat flow in calories, m is mass, c is the specific heat and DT is the temperature difference between the two objects, we discovered that an average peanut can produce 45.54 calories, or 190.5 joules, which will further be explained. This conclusion of a single peanut s potential energy was what attracted our group to the

Shoko Asahara, who was born Chizuo Matsumoto, during his stay in India in 1986, while he was on various religious retreats in the Himalayan Mountains, claimed to have found enlightenment and upon his return to Japan founded the group Aum Shinrikyo in 1987. Eventually word starting spreading about his so called teachings of the supreme truth (World Religions and Spirituality Project VCU, Jackie Fowler, 2001). Asahara claimed that he had the power to read minds and because of his enlightenment, claimed to have visions or prophesies, as he would call them, about future events. Asahara started preaching sermons about how his visions showed him that the world would end by the turn of the 21st century and that the only survivors would be Aum Shinrikyo members themselves. The group was so obsessed with Armageddon that it went so far as to try to make it happen themselves. In March 1993, Asahara gave orders to start production of Sarin gas

The Democracy And Human Rights For as long as it has existed, the Chinese government has been power hungry, They have limited the freedom of citizens so that they can make the decisions themselves, such as not allowing citizens to vote for government officials. Instead, officials are simply appointed by others in government. Citizens want reform, protests have occurred across the country for change to a democratic system so that citizens can finally elect the people that represent them. This would give citizens more power, but as result, take some away from the government, which they do not want. The Chinese government needs to listen to their citizens and change to a democratic system to give them more freedom and make them happier. The status of democracy and human rights in China is not where it could be. Both are limited in the following ways. According to Noah Berlatsky, China s government is authoritarian and undemocratic. Leaders are for the most part appointed and not elected. Media in China are regulated, and protest against the government is strictly limited (Berlatsky). This means that the citizens of China do not have the ability to influence who is elected. The already appointed government officials decide and appoint others. The Chinese government also strictly limits protesting. There is a popular practice known as Falun Gong, which includes exercises and the study of several books. This was accomplished by selecting six non athletes and six athletes to run one lap around the Fresno Pacific track for two days. Each participant s resting heartrate was taken before running the lap and instantly after running the lap as well. The subjects were given a survey on their health as to avoid injured or asthmatic variables. Also they were all required to be in the healthy BMI range and the athletes were from one sport and the non athletes had a strict definition of exercise as less than twice a week. However, a few errors could have slipped through. For example when recording the participants heart rate. The pulse was sometimes hard to locate requiring more time to look for it after their lap run and perhaps lose data in the process. Another possible error that could have occurred was taking the recovery times. The majority of the participant trials were done by one project partner making it difficult to monitor the thirty second intervals while measuring and recording the heart rates as well. In future studies these errors may be avoided by requiring all the researchers be present for the experiment in order to secure more definitive results. Another issue that occurred was the participants failing to show up, more so in the athlete group, which left a hole in hour experimental data because we were unable to reach the intended six athlete total due to this issue. Future researchers should attempt to have all the athlete and non athlete participants together at one time for each day. • 20. Substitution And Elimination Reaction Lab Report Substitution and Elimination Reactions Substitution reactions replace a functional group with a new group. These reactions compete with elimination reactions in which a group is eliminated and a ПЂ (pi) bond is formed. Substitution reactions occur when a nucleophile is added to an electrophile/substrate. Elimination reactions occur when a base is added to an electrophile/substrate. The electrophile must contain a leaving group to be considered a substrate. Alkyl Halides Alkyl Halides are the common substrate used in substitution and elimination reactions. Alkyl Halides are halogen containing alkane compounds. These compounds are commonly used as the electrophile in substitution reactions. Naming Alkyl Halides is similar to naming alkanes. Halogen substituents are named just like alkane substituents, for example if there is a chlorine attached to an ethane the chlorine substituent will be named using the word chloro . The other halogens are named using the words flouro , bromo , and iodo respectively. These possible substituents are listed alphabetically along with the alkane substituents. When dealing with alkyl halides it is important to note that the carbons attached to the halogens and the carbons attached to those carbons are involved in the reaction process, therefore we designate these carbons with special symbols to differentiate them from the rest of the molecule. The carbon atom that is bonded to the halogen is designated the О± (alpha) carbon. The carbons that are

Second to oil, the coffee industry employs millions of people to trade, process, grow, and produce coffee (BBC News). In this paper I will address if the coffee industry is fair to its producers and consumers. I will also discuss different fiscal organizations that directly affect the coffee industry s prices like the International Coffee Organization, World Trade Organization, Free Trade, and Fair Trade. I will also touch upon of the coffee industry influences farmers, middleman, and consumers. In 1963, the International Coffee Organization (ICO) was established. The ICO was first made to assist the economies in Africa and South America. This organization abides by international agreements made under the supervision of the United Nations. The ICO is the most effective agreement produced to control the supply of coffee. These agreements contributed a quota system and price control that benefited both importing and exporting nations. Not only was the ICO fair to both sides, it also provided a fair price to the consumer which resulted in the rise in consumption (The Economics of Coffee). Shockingly, most of the success of the ICO was allocated to the United States. The United States helped enforce the quota system to help provide a stabilized economy for poor Latin American countries. Enforcing the agreements also prevented communism in these countries. Once the United States withdrew from the

Loneliness In The Age Of Innocence lthough one may think that residing comfortably near to the top of the Manhattan social pyramid guarantees inclusion, the protagonist of Edith Wharton s Age Of Innocence, Newland Archer, comes to find himself on the psychological fringe despite his wealth and lofty familial status, isolated by the unique attitudes about life and love he develops after falling for Ellen Olenska. By presenting Newland s emotional defeat at the end of the novel, despite his conscious attempt to diverge from societal rules, Wharton demonstrates the inescapability of high society and its nature as a hindrance to free thought. In the beginning of the novel, Newland Archer seems every bit as stuffy as the members of society he is surrounded by, but his outlook begins to change with the arrival of... His image was formerly of the utmost importance to him: he arrived late to the Opera because it was the thing to do (Wharton 4) and few things [seemed to him] more awful than an offense against Taste (Wharton 12). When Ellen, the black sheep of the Mingott family, made an appearance at the Opera, Archer at first becomes annoyed that this strange foreign woman was attracting negative attention to the box of his betrothed, May Welland, and agrees with fellow high society onlooker, Sillerton Jackson, that the Mingotts should not have tried it on (Wharton 10). But, upon spending time with Ellen, Archer s pretentiousness begins to dull and his self alienation from the rules of society begins. During a dinner with Sillerton Jackson, Archer defends Ellen and even goes so far as to say that Women ought to be free as free as we are, though he was painfully aware of the terrific consequences his words could bring (Wharton 34).

In analyzing the Western deep ecology movement, he criticized its focus on preservation of wild areas. By doing this, he was directly criticizing what I have long thought of as my main goal as an environmentalist. One of the first things that turned me on to environmental issues when I was younger was my horror at the soaring rate of rainforest destruction so dramatically portrayed to us in 9th grade biology class. Guha s article critiqued the four main tenants of deep ecology (which are, as he sees them,: a shift from anthropocentric to biocentric ethics, a focus on preservation of wilderness, an invocation of Eastern spiritual traditions, and a perception of being the vanguard of current environmentalism) in order to show that, as is, deep ecology would only meet its goals at the expense of the Third World. He gave the example of Project Tiger in India, in which Western preservationists organizations encouraged the designation of a network of parks to preserve the tiger s habitat but only by moving whole villages of people and prohibiting them from using the land (272). Of course, this type of conflict between
