What Coaching
Does 1 of 2
I get input from many
sources and experts but
everyone else is telling me
what they would do in my
place.
Tony seems to draw out
from me my own best
thinking and helps me see
what is best for myself.
Tony has a way of truly
transforming my thinking
to achieve positive results.

What Coaching
Does 1 of 2
Tony’s coaching helped
me look at the world from
an entirely new
perspective.
After years of trying to fix
“what’s wrong” in my
business and life, he’s
helped me learn to pursue
what’s possible.
The change in perspective
has made all the

Awareness & Choice
Between stimulus and
response, there is a space.
In that space lies our
freedom and power to
choose our response. In
our response lies our
growth and freedom.

Why look at coaching?
Back when people thought coaches wore a whistle and yelled from the sidelines.
— Coaching for the 21st centuryKorn Ferry InternationalJan Rybeck & Allen Moore
http://tonymayo.com/executive-coaching-makes-an-impact/
I want to be very clear that I do not intend to devalue any of the following. I am just distinguishing activities that are often conflated with coaching.
Specific skills applied to create specific deliverables, perhaps while providing OJT to client staff.
Transfer of knowledge from my head to yours, let me pull you along a specific, established trail.
Odysseus asked his well-experienced friend Mentor to watch over and guide his son Telemachus.
I have been where you want to go and I will guide you down a similar path.
Affection, distraction, unconditional companionship.
Friends support you in your activities. Good friend helps you move the furniture. A real friend helps you move the body.
However, tends to reinforce our familiar, accustomed ways of being and behaving. Friends not only seldom push you out of your comfort zone but may actually lapse into “Crab Bucket” problem.
Put your hand – Manos – on it and move it to where you want it. Inherently manipulative; you are used to accomplish the manager's objectives. First used in context of controlling a horses.
Find and fix something wrong, a pathology or dis-ease.
Origin: to heal, medical treatment
Saying, “This is what I would do if I were in your circumstances.”
B U T-T-T the advice giver is never actually in your exact circumstances. Advice comes from their worldview, assumptions, and experiences.
I have done all of these things with my coaching clients in addition to coaching them—except therapy. That requires a license.
Notice distinction from “advice” with “input from many sources and experts”
Note distinction from “Therapy in “trying to fix ‘what’s wrong’”
AND
Shift of worldview implied by “change in perspective”
You access to a creative solution was constrained not by ignorance –you’ve seen diamond shaped windows – but by your knowledge of mostly horizontal windows.
Etymology– early 19th century slang for a professor who helps a student so much that the teacher virtually carried the student in a coach to pass the exam.
INTENTIONAL: a purpose, a reason, something to be created.
CONVERSATION: get together to make change
Windows do not need to be vertical and horizontal; windows can be angled.
ANECDOTE EXAMPLE: Shift from “Manipulating this prospect at Xmas, time to “I am helping him get what he wants.”
No guarantee, no established recipe, only a willingness to try new methods, to engage with people and the world in a novel way.
Choice, freedom
Possibility vs facticity
E.G., shift from manipulating prospect to helping him get what he wants (Xmas at JMA)
University of Sheffield cognitive scientist Tom Stafford likes to show people this picture in talks. He "warns the audience that [he's] about to 'rewire their brains.'“
http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2014/05/10-things-you-cant-unsee-and-what-that-says-about-your-brain/361335/
One distinguished, the world looks different … because you are different.
Not for anything for which a step-by-step process or recipe exists.
Not a map – your future is unexplored – but wilderness survival skills.

Fees are sometimes hourly, like a lawyer, more often monthly, like a health club
Competent beginners as little as $75/hour
Experienced, effective coaches $1,000 to $3,000 per month.
Some $500,000 per gig. Tony Robbins $125,000 per day—or more.

Is your life closer to the experience you want (not just SMRs)?
Plus, and mostly, is your tool kit more useful and available? E.g., Imago conversation format
Ephemeral like a snowflake?

Lasts as long as you actively replace the messages of the dominant/previous culture with intentional structures and relationships
