“…(UC Riverside Students are) as bright and engaged as any students I’ve taught at Harvard or
Berkeley, and also determined to give back to their communities and their society. UCR has the
energy of an underdog that knows it’s winning the race that’s worth winning. I wish we could
clone UCR all over America.”
Robert B. Reich (UC Berkeley professor, Former U.S. Secretary of Labor, Best-selling author)

RESEARCH
UC Riverside is one of the few U.S. institutions to offer
exceptional research opportunities to undergraduate students.
By the time they graduate, more than 50% will have participated
in research or creative projects. Opportunities are available
in all fields of study. They seek to improve health, nutrition,
sustainability, and prosperity around the world.
Powered by the sun
UC Riverside’s new solar farm provides up to 6.6 million
megawatt hours of electricity each year, the equivalent of
powering 960 homes. Thirteen on-campus solar tables provide a
clean, renewable source of energy. Students can dine and study
at these café-style tables, while charging their mobile devices.
Fueling the world
In the CE-CERT Hydrogasification Laboratory, researchers are
looking for alternative fuels made from agricultural and forestry
residues, solid waste, and low-cost grasses and wood.
Feeding the world
UC Riverside scientists and students are seeking ways to breed
pest- and drought-resistant cowpeas for farmers in famine-
stricken Africa.
Google and more
Research in the humanities, arts, and social sciences includes
groundbreaking studies on happiness, a Google grant to improve
descriptions of books published before 1801, and the addition of
Google Books to a 600,000-document catalog.

INTERNSHIPS
Students explore the working world with internships available
through UC Riverside’s Career Center. Our staff guides students
through the internship process with workshops, networking
opportunities with prospective employers, a resource library,
and online sources (go.ucr.edu/explore, SCOTjobs, NACElink,
and company websites). Students can also learn how to create
effective curriculum vitaes and cover letters, as well as improve
interview skills and professional etiquette.
Faculty
Transforming
the World
At UC Riverside, we give faculty the tools they need
to make a difference in our world. Engineering
professors are developing devices that can “hear”
cancer, geochemists are discovering traces of
oxygen that appeared 50 to 100 million years
earlier than previously thought, and researchers
in varied fields are breaking new ground every
day, such as:
Matt Barth, professor of electrical engineering
and head of the Bourns College of Engineering
Center for Environmental Research and Technology
(CE-CERT), is directing 80 scientists and five
research groups on various topics including the
use of technology to reduce pollution.
Cheryl Hayashi, professor of biology and vice
chair, is a national expert on the genetic structure
of spider silk, and received a “Genius Award”
from the prestigious MacArthur Foundation.
David Lo, distinguished professor of biomedical
sciences, is working to develop a painless,
needle-free vaccination that could help people
around the world avoid, such as common
illnesses as the flu.
Robert Nash Parker, professor of sociology,
is one of the United States’ foremost leaders in
documenting the connection between drugs and
alcohol and the prevalence of crime, violence and
anti-social behaviors.
