ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE
AND COMPATIBILITY
PREPARED BY

EMI- ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE
• An Electromagnetic disturbance which may degrade
the performance of an equipment or device or
cause malfunction of the equipment is called
electromagnetic interference.
• Refers to the interaction between electric and
magnetic fields and sensitive electronic circuits
and devices.
EMC- ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY
• Electromagnetic Compatibility is a near perfect
state in which a receptor (device or system)
functions are satisfactorily in common
electromagnetic environment without introducing
intolerable electromagnetic disturbance to any
other device/ equipment/system in that
environment
EMC
• Electromagnetic Compatibility is a near perfect
state in which a receptor (device or system)
functions are satisfactorily in common
electromagnetic environment without introducing
intolerable electromagnetic disturbance to any
other device/ equipment/system in that
environment
Mechanisms of Electromagnetic
Interference (EMI)
• Electromagnetic Compatibility is a near perfect
state in which a receptor (device or system)
functions are satisfactorily in common
electromagnetic environment without introducing
intolerable electromagnetic disturbance to any
other device/ equipment/system in that
environment
Mechanisms of Electromagnetic
Interference (EMI)
• Path 1:Direct radiation from source to receptor.
• Path 2:Direct radiation from source picked up by the
electrical power cables or the signal/control cables
connected to the receptor , which reaches the receptor
via conduction.
• Path 3: EMI radiated by the electrical power, signal or
control cables of the source.
• Path 4:EMI directly conducted from its source to the
receptor via common electrical power supply lines or
via common signal/control cables.
Mechanisms of Electromagnetic
Interference (EMI)
• The primary mechanism by which EMI moves from
its source to the receptor are radiation and
conduction.
• The receptor becomes a victim when the intensity
of the EMI is above tolerable limit.
Mechanisms of Electromagnetic
Interference (EMI)
Practical experiences & concerns
EMI/EMC Interference (EMI)
Types of EMI
•Based on causes and problems:
1. Intra-EMI
2. Inter-EMI
•Based on the way it was created:
1.Man made EMI
2.Naturally occurring EMI
Types of EMI
•Based on its duration:
1.Continuous Interference
2.Impulse Interference
•Based on its bandwidth:
1.Narrowband EMI
2.Broadband EMI
Effects of Radiation on the human body
•Hair
•Brain
•Thyroid
•Blood system
•Heart
•Gastrointestinal tract
•Reproductive tract
