Frozen movement photography is a basic technique that suspends motion completely
and keeps the subject matter frozen in time mid movement. This photography
technique requires a fast shutter speed to freeze the motion without blur. The faster
the subject moves, the faster the shutter speed will need to be in order to suspend it
completely. Movement can communicate mood, so many photographers use motion
to eliminate elements in a scene that may serve as distractions to the viewer Frozen
motion photography is the simplest technique to capture motion as a fast shutter speed
will not require use of a tripod and the photographer can simply hold the camera
without much worry for camera shake. As a fast shutter speed is required, photos will
look better when taken in a well-lit environment.
Johannes Waibel, a Swiss photographer often does this technique well when he
captures snowboarders and skiers on the mountains where he lives. I was inspired by
looking at his vibrant and perfectly in focus images to take my own frozen movement
images.

At first I set up two lights either side of the subject so the lighting would be even and
wouldn’t alter the picture as I will need to have a fast shutter speed. Then I
experimented with the models
positions to see how the camera would
capture any movement and I learnt that
the bigger the movement the better the
photo would look, as it would appear
truly frozen. I got my models to jump
up and down as I captured my photos.
During the edit I thought that adding
colours would improve the photos and
would make them more interesting and
enhance the plain white background.
