What’s an ‘Indication’?
“In medicine, an indication is a
valid reason to use a certain test,
medication, procedure, or surgery.
The opposite of indication is
contraindication”

INDICATIONS & CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR COLON HYDROTHERAPY © COLON THERAPY INSTITUTE
1 Abdominal Distension (i.e. gas)
Description:
• Occurs when substances, such as air (gas) or fluid,
accumulate in the abdomen causing its outward expansion
beyond the normal girth of the stomach and waist
• Usually a symptom of an underlying disease or dysfunction
• Described as feeling bloated, full, or having cramps
Potential causes:
• Excessive eating and sleep swallowing
• Crohn's disease
• Ulcerative colitis
• Irritable bowel syndrome
• Diabetes
• Functional dyspepsia
• Transient constipation
• Other: milk intolerance, parasite infections, food poisoning
(bacteria), celiac disease, severe peptic ulcer disease, bowel
obstruction or after certain types of abdominal surgery
Treatments for patients to consider:
• Avoid foods known to cause gas (i.e. beans, cabbage,
broccoli)
• Chew food thoroughly and avoid drinking with meals
• Take digestive enzymes and probiotics
• Use squatting posture on toilet

2 Acute Fecal Impaction
Description:
• A solid, immobile bulk of human feces that can
develop in the rectum as a result of chronic
constipation
• Abdominal pain and bloating could also be present
Potential causes:
• Physical inactivity
• Not eating enough (particularly of fiber)
• Not drinking enough water

5 Balance Physiologic Flora of Large
Intestine
Description:
• We are constantly depleting our intestinal
flora via the processing of live toxins,
medications, antibiotics, and a diet high in
carbohydrates, sugars and alcohol
• Such a diet often leads to an overgrowth of
unfriendly bacteria and yeasts
• We need to constantly re-bacterialize and
replenish our inner environment
Potential causes:
• Medications
• Poor diet (see above)
Treatments for patients to consider:
• Incorporate foods into diet that promote
health flora (i.e. fermented foods)
• Colonics wash out the bad bacteria and
provide a habitat for the good bacteria to
colonize and flourish

Description:
• Profound fatigue that is not improved by bed rest
and that may be worsened by physical or mental
activity
• Symptoms may include weakness, muscle pain,
impaired memory and/or mental concentration,
and insomnia, which can result in reduced
participation in daily activities
Potential causes:
• Scientists don't know exactly what causes chronic
fatigue syndrome. It may be a combination of
factors that affect people who were born with a
predisposition for the disorder
Treatments for patients to consider:
• Relaxation
• Gentle exercise
• Talk therapy
• Hormone tests

8 Diarrhea
Description:
• The condition of having at least three
loose or liquid bowel movements each
day
• Often lasts for a few days and can result
in dehydration due to fluid loss
• Signs of dehydration often begin with
loss of the normal stretchiness of the
skin and changes in personality
Potential causes:
• The most common cause is an infection
of the intestines due to either a virus,
bacteria, or parasite
• Other causes include: hyperthyroidism,
lactose intolerance, inflammatory bowel
disease, a number of medications, and
irritable bowel syndrome
Treatments for patients to consider:

hypersensitivities to particular proteins
in different foods
Treatments for patients to consider:
• Treatment consists of either
immunotherapy (desensitization) or
avoidance, in which the allergic person
avoids all forms of contact with the food
to which they are allergic

17 Preparation for Surgery
Colon hydrotherapy is ordered before certain surgeries and procedures,
including:
• Barium Enema - an X-ray examination of the large intestine
• Colonoscopy - a test that allows your doctor to look at the interior
lining of your large intestine
• Sigmoidoscopy - a procedure used to see inside the sigmoid colon
and rectum
INDICATIONS & CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR COLON HYDROTHERAPY © COLON THERAPY INSTITUTE
18 Prevention
• Colon hydrotherapy can also be
used as a preventative measure
for cancers of the colon, liver, and
digestive system, as well as for
general health
• When we normally move our
bowels, we do not entirely empty
the colon and material is left
behind. A colonic flushes away what
is left over, cleaning the body of
waste and toxins that can build up
and promote the growth of cancer
cells
• Along with a healthy diet and
exercise program, regular colonics
are part of a proactive plan to
ward off disease and promote
well-being
