Thermodynamics is the science of energy and its transformations. The first law of thermodynamics states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed from one form to another. A system exchanges heat and work with its surroundings, and can be isolated, closed, or open depending on whether mass and/or energy can cross its boundary. A system's state is defined by properties like temperature, pressure, and volume, and a process occurs when a system changes state.
