This document proposes a Rayleigh Mixture Model (RMM) to characterize plaque morphology in intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) images. The RMM models pixel intensities as a linear combination of Rayleigh distributions. This allows modeling heterogeneous tissues as a mixture of homogeneous components. The Expectation Maximization algorithm is used to automatically estimate the mixture coefficients and Rayleigh parameters from IVUS data. Evaluation on plaque samples shows the RMM can accurately describe different plaque types and improve characterization over existing methods.
