insect lands on them they get stuck, and
then the leaf moves to wrap itself around
the insect.

7. ANNUAL PLANTS
 Annual plants are plants that usually germinate,
flower, and die in one year.
 The entire life cycle of the plant is ONE YEAR!
 EXAMPLE: Tomatoes, Sunflowers, and Sweet
Potatoes!

8. PERENNIAL PLANTS
 Perennial plants are plants that live for LONGER
than two years.
 EXAMPLE: Ginger, Garlic, Pineapple, Bananas,
Evergreen Trees and Roses!

10. Pond and Riverside plants
 The characteristics of plants change according to the
environment which they live.
 Plants from the desert will be much different than a
plant from the forest, or a plant that grows near the
water!
 Right now we are going to learn the characteristics of
plants that grow in ponds or at the riverside!

11. Reeds and Cattails
 Both reeds and cattails grow at the edge of the water.
 They both have TALL and STRONG straight stems.
 Their roots grow in the soil.

12. Lotus, Spatterdock, Water Caltrop
and Water Lily
 These plants grow in the water.
 Their leaves and flowers float on or above the surface
of the water to get more energy from sunlight.
 Their stems are weak and their roots grow in the soil,
underwater.

17. Hornwort, Asian Vallis, and Hydrilla
 These plants grow and live UNDERWATER!
 They have VERY weak stems and thin leaves.
 The stems cannot support the plant when taken out of
water.

18. Water Hyacinth and Duckweed
 These plants have floating leaves, flowers, stems, AND
roots!
 Their roots absorb nutrients from the water
instead of the soil!
 The WATER HYACINTH has spongy stems that help
keep it afloat! (spongy= like a SPONGE!)
