Starter activity
LO3. Be able to support children’s exercise in an outdoor space
[AC 3.1]
Time: 15 mins
Age groups 0-2 years, 2-4 years, 4 -8 years, 8-12 years
• List all the outdoor exercise activities that you can think of
which are relevant to that age group.
• When you have listed all the obvious ones, be creative and
think of some unusual activities.

LO3. Be able to support children’s exercise in an outdoor space
[AC 3.1]
When you are planning an exercise activity for an outdoor space you
would need to consider the following:
• Children’s individual needs
• Learning outcomes (what you want the children to learn) – refer to
the EYFS
• The children’s age and stage of development – is the activity age
appropriate?
• Inclusive practice
• Health and safety
• Challenge
• Relevant setting policy and procedures.

LO3. Be able to support children’s exercise in an outdoor space
[AC 3.1]
Time: 15 mins
• Share your ideas from the Starter activity.
• Discuss the considerations that you would need to take into
account when planning an exercise activity for an outdoor
space.

Pairs activity
LO3. Be able to support children’s exercise in an outdoor space
[AC 3.1, 3.2]
Time: 20 mins
Plan an exercise activity to carry out with the children during Teddy Tots
group aged 2-3 years, bearing in mind that you will be implementing this
activity with the children.
Work with your Teddy Tots partner
• Plan an activity for the children using the planning sheet provided.
• Consider what you want the children to learn – the learning objectives.
• You will need to discuss this with your supervisor.
• Carry out the activity during the Teddy Tots session and ask your Lecturer
for advice on any modifications that you should make.
CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator© Hodder & Stoughton Limited
LO3. Be able to support children’s exercise in an outdoor space
[AC 3.1, 3.2]
Points to consider when implementing your activity:
• Is the activity you have planned age appropriate?
• Is it appealing to children, for example, is it fun?
• What will they learn from this? Are there any other related skills that they will learn, for
example, social skills?
• Does the activity address risk and challenge?
• What resources do you need?
• Are there any children that you may have to make modifications for (differentiation)
• Refer to the Pairs activity planning sheet.
You should:
• Demonstrate an understanding of the practitioner’s role
• Show how you have considered equality and diversity
• Implement the activity in your setting.

LO3. Be able to support children’s exercise in an outdoor space
[AC 3.3]
Reflective practice is an important learning experience for the
practitioner.
• It allows the practitioner to learn from experience.
• It allows the practitioner to learn about, evaluate, develop and take a
position on his/her practice.
Skills needed for reflective practice
• Self-awareness.
• Ability to view situations from a number of perspectives.
• Ability to analyse critically and seek solutions.
• Ability to use evidence in supporting and evaluating a decision or position.

LO3. Be able to support children’s exercise in an outdoor space
[AC 3.3]
Reflective practice - Why bother?
Reflective practice enables the practitioner to:
• identify strengths and weaknesses
• plan next steps
• problem solve
• identify areas for professional development.
It also:
• supports continuous review
• supports the evaluation and planning cycle.

Group activity
LO3. Be able to support children’s exercise in an outdoor space
[AC 3.4]
Time: 15 mins
In groups, describe the provision for outdoor play and exercise in
your own setting.
• Discuss what your ideal setting would be like – how would you
set it up to provide the best provision for outdoor exercise?
• Design a poster to show the rest of the class your ideas.
• Annotate it to explain and justify your reasons for your design.
CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator© Hodder & Stoughton Limited
LO3. Be able to support children’s exercise in an outdoor space
[AC 3.4]
• In making recommendations it is important to do your research
first. You may want to carry out observations, you will need to make
sure that you are objective in your observations. Ensure that you
know what you are looking for before you undertake observations.
• You will need to be sensitive in making your feedback. It is always
important to start with positive points and then discuss areas for
improvement. If you have identified areas for improvement you
should always be able to make recommendations. Your
recommendations should be positive, practical, realistic and
achievable.
• Consider whether there are any financial implications to your
recommendations.
Recommendations for the outdoor provision in own setting
CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator© Hodder & Stoughton Limited
Independent research activity
LO3. Be able to support children’s exercise in an outdoor space
[AC 3.4]
Time: 15 mins
You have described the provision in your own setting and
planned and designed the perfect setting to provide outdoor
provision.
• Now you should critically review your own setting and make
recommendations for the improvement of its outdoor
provision.
• Research the provision in other local settings, and equipment
and resources available.

Extension activity
LO3. Be able to support children’s exercise in an outdoor space
[AC 3.4]
Time: 15 mins
Consider the following questions:
1. How can outdoor provision provide for:
• Challenging children?
• Developing imaginations?
• Providing choice?
• Providing risk?
• Ensuring safety?
2. Do all outdoor activities involve exercise?

Summary: plenary activities
1. Design an activity to encourage imagination, for example, a mud
kitchen. How would this support children’s exercise opportunities?
2. Design an outdoor area where children have ease of access to all the
equipment. How can choice of activities encourage outdoor exercise?
3. What sort of surfaces have you seen in outdoor play areas? How might
these encourage exercise?

Editor's Notes

  1. Teacher notes: Learners could consider the importance of enabling environments and how they encourage children’s problem-solving skills through challenge.
  2. Teacher notes: Learners will need to consider differentiation.
  3. Teacher notes: Learners should just focus on the outdoor environment for this activity. They may consider Forest Schools and providing challenge to children.
  4. Teacher notes: It may be necessary to discuss what is meant by ‘objective’ observations.
  5. Teacher notes: Encourage discussion amongst the learners.
  6. Teacher notes: Learners should consider the importance of empowering children. They could research soft surfaces, for example, for under swings and slides etc.
