Tzvetan Todorov is a historian and essayist who developed a theory of narrative structure. He proposed that narratives follow a circular pattern of equilibrium, disruption, and new equilibrium. Specifically, they begin with an initial stable state, experience some event that disturbs the order, and conclude after the disruption has been addressed and a new stable state restored, with the characters or situation transformed. According to Todorov, the middle portion can depict actions outside of social norms, and some stories involve multiple disruptions before achieving resolution.
The document discusses several narrative theories:
1) Aristotle's Unities theory which states a narrative should have unity of time, place, and action.
2) Freytag's Dramatic Structure which divides narratives into five parts: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and denouement.
3) Todorov's theory which proposes narratives begin with equilibrium, then a disruption causes disequilibrium followed by a new equilibrium.
4) Propp's theory which identified 8 character types that appear in Russian fairytales.
5) Barthes' Enigma Code where narratives establish and then solve mysteries.
The trailer will draw from Todorov's theory of equilibrium, disequilibrium
Todorov's narrative theory suggests that stories typically follow a pattern: they begin in a state of equilibrium that is disrupted by an event, leading to an attempted repair by protagonists to restore balance. The theory outlines five stages: 1) initial equilibrium, 2) disruption, 3) recognition of disruption, 4) attempt to repair by protagonists, and 5) restoration of balance. The auteur theory sees directors as sole creators of films, with the director determining whether a film is good or bad. This relates to students aiming to create a solid opening sequence for their film through effective use of shots, lighting, sound, and editing to gain positive reactions from horror audiences.
Thrillers are novels, plays, or films with a fast pace and exciting plot that often involves crime or espionage and builds tension. Common thriller subgenres include psychological thrillers, crime thrillers, and mystery thrillers, which create a sudden rush of emotion using plot twists and cliffhangers. The group is focusing on psychological thrillers such as Se7en, The Machinist, and The Silence of the Lambs.

This document summarizes several film theorists and their theories:
1. Laura Mulvey's "Male Gaze" theory argues that camera angles in films typically objectify women from a heterosexual male perspective.
2. Roland Barthes' theory discusses the hermeneutic code, which creates mystery in films, and the proairetic code, which builds tension.
3. Claude Levi-Strauss' theory of binary opposition examines how conflict arises in media through opposing concepts like good vs. evil.
4. Tzvetan Todorov's theory outlines the 5 typical stages of narratives: equilibrium, disequilibrium, recognition, attempt to repair, new equilibrium.

The document discusses the key elements of plot in a short story: exposition introduces the characters and setting, rising action focuses events around the conflict, the climax is the turning point where the problem is solved, falling action shows carrying out the solution, and resolution concludes the story by wrapping up the problem. It also includes a diagram showing the sequence and relationship between these plot elements.
Todorov proposed a theory of narrative structure that states narratives begin with a period of equilibrium, followed by an event that causes disequilibrium and unrest, and concludes with the protagonists achieving a renewed state of equilibrium and resolution. His theory suggests all media follows this basic pattern of introducing characters in a calm state, disrupting that calm with some challenge or problem, and ultimately restoring order and peace by resolving the disruption.

Narrative structure in films typically follows a three-act structure of beginning, middle, and end. This includes establishing an initial equilibrium, a disruption that introduces a problem, and restoring order by resolving the problem. Several narrative theories describe common patterns in film structure. Todorov's theory outlines a five-stage process from equilibrium to equilibrium via disruption, realization, restoring order. The narrative theory analyzes how stories are structured and organized to convey meaning. Tzvetan Todorov suggested that narratives follow a 5-stage structure: establishing equilibrium, disrupting equilibrium, recognizing the disruption, attempting repair, and reinstating equilibrium. Vladimir Propp analyzed fairy tales and proposed that most stories feature 8 character types. Claude Levi-Strauss theorized that all narratives are based on binary oppositions, with the central climax revolving around an opposition such as good vs evil, strong vs weak, etc.
Tzvetan Todorov proposed a narrative theory consisting of three stages - equilibrium, disequilibrium, and new equilibrium. He argued stories should start in a normal state, be disrupted by some event, then resolve with things returning to normal. The theory has been applied to many stories. However, some argue it is too rigid and doesn't allow for genre subversion. Alternatively, Claude Levi-Strauss focused on using themes and binary oppositions like good vs evil to engage audiences, rather than following a set pattern. This approach highlights character conflicts and motivations through opposing forces. The document discusses and compares the narrative theories of Tzvetan Todorov and Claude Levi-Strauss.
Todorov proposed a theory of narrative structure that he believed could be applied to any film. The theory consists of 5 stages: 1) equilibrium, where power is balanced; 2) disequilibrium, caused by a disruption to the order; 3) acknowledgement of the disorder; 4) an attempt to repair the damage; and 5) a new state of equilibrium is reached, restoring normality. This structure can be seen in most film narratives, with the disruption normally occurring outside of everyday situations, such as a murder investigation.
Tzvetan Todorov's theory of equilibrium proposes that narratives follow a 5-stage circular structure: 1) an initial state of equilibrium, 2) a disruption causing disequilibrium, 3) recognition of the disruption, 4) an attempt to repair the damage, and 5) a return to a new equilibrium. The narrative is driven by restoring equilibrium, though the final equilibrium is transformed from the initial state. This structure involves characters or situations changing through progressing the disruption, which usually occurs outside normal social events.
This document discusses various narrative theories that can be used to analyze media texts such as music videos. It introduces the theories of Todorov, Propp, and Levi-Strauss for understanding traditional narrative structures. Todorov's theory presents most narratives as having a beginning, middle, and end, with stages of equilibrium, disruption, recognition, reparation, and new equilibrium. Propp's theory identifies common character types in narratives. Levi-Strauss suggests opposing main characters are often used. The document discusses applying these theories to analyze the narratives and characters within music videos. It questions how far traditional theories can explain narratives in modern media forms.
This document summarizes several narrative theorists and their theories for analyzing film narratives. It discusses Todorov's theory of equilibrium, disequilibrium, and renewed equilibrium in narratives. It also briefly outlines Propp's theory of 8 character types in fairy tales, Barthes' concept of narratives establishing and solving an enigma, and Levi-Strauss' idea of binary oppositions creating tension between characters. The document applies Todorov's shortened theory to analyzing a film trailer in 3 parts: opening, build up, and problem/events.
The document summarizes several theories of narrative structure:
1) Aristotle's theory states that a plot must have a beginning, middle, and end with causally related events. Narratives should also have unity of time, place and action.
2) Todorov's theory is that a narrative begins with equilibrium, is disrupted by an event causing disequilibrium, and ends with a renewed equilibrium.
3) Propp's theory is that fairy tales contain 8 character types that fulfill predictable roles like hero and villain, and each character has a sphere of action related to the plot.
4) Levi-Strauss observed that narratives often feature binary opposites where one side is more valued than
This document discusses different narrative structures and theorists. It begins by defining narrative as story structure and devices. It describes linear and circular structures, and how Aristotle and Freytag developed basic plot structures. It then discusses narrative theorists like Todorov and his model of equilibrium, disequilibrium, resolution, and restoration. Next it links Carroll's three phase model of onset, discovery, and disruption to the horror genre. Finally, it notes Todorov also argued narratives involve an initial situation, a disruptive problem, and a resolution reinstating the initial situation.
This document discusses narrative theories proposed by Tzvetan Todorov and Roland Barthes. It explains that Tzvetan Todorov, a Bulgarian philosopher, proposed that narratives follow five stages in order: equilibrium, disruption, realization, reparation, and restoration of equilibrium. Roland Barthes, a French literary theorist, categorized narrative codes into five ways: proairetic code, hermeneutic code, semantic code, cultural code, and symbolic code. The document provides biographical details about Tzvetan Todorov and Roland Barthes and overviews their theories regarding the structure and codes of narratives.
The document discusses several key concepts related to genre and narrative in media texts:
- Genre refers to recognizable categories of media defined by common conventions like plot, characters, settings, and visual elements. Understanding genre gives audiences pleasures of anticipation and expectation.
- Narrative is the organization of facts that gives coherence and meaning. Narratives use conventions like genre, character, time, and form to link events. Theories by Barthes and Todorov analyze how narratives progress from an initial state to a transformed resolution.
- Dyer's utopian theory suggests audiences seek escapism through media genres that offer idealized worlds contrasting with limitations of reality. Media fulfill gratifications by presenting opportunities lacking in
This document discusses narrative theory by Tzvetan Todorov and Roland Barthes. Todorov suggested that conventional narratives follow five stages: an initial state of equilibrium, a disruption to that equilibrium by some event, recognition of the disruption, an attempt to repair the disruption, and a reinstatement of the final equilibrium. Barthes identified five codes that shape narratives: the hermeneutic code, the proairetic code, the semantic code, the symbolic code, and the cultural code. The document analyzes how these theories apply to the two-minute opening sequence of a student film production about a woman seeking revenge.
Narrative theorists study narrative theory and different approaches to analyzing plots and stories. Tzvetan Todorov's theory proposes that most films follow a structure of Equilibrium (normal state), Disruption (detrimental change), Resolution (trying to resolve the problem), and New Equilibrium (restoring order). Vladimir Propp's theory is that characters fall into specific roles like hero. Claude Levi-Strauss's theory is that most films have two opposing forces that cause conflict and drive the story, like good vs evil. Roland Barthes identified five codes for analyzing scenes: Enigma, Action, Semantic/Semiotic, Referential, and Symbolic.
The document discusses different narrative structures and theorists. It explains linear and circular narrative structures, as well as Aristotle's and Freytag's plot structures. It then discusses several narrative theorists including Vladimir Propp who identified character roles like hero and villain, and Tzvetan Todorov who proposed narratives follow a structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium, recognition, resolution, and restoration of equilibrium. Finally, it argues Todorov's theory links well to horror narratives and that Roland Barthes' theory of enigma also applies when the protagonist must solve a puzzle to survive, as seen in films like Saw.
This document summarizes several narrative theories proposed by different theorists:
1) Tzvetan Todorov analyzed plots and found most narratives follow a structure of equilibrium, disruption of equilibrium by an outside force, and a return to equilibrium.
2) Vladimir Propp analyzed over 100 narratives and proposed they can be classified by character roles and functions such as hero, villain, donor, dispatcher, and princess.
3) Claude Levi-Strauss studied myths and found they reflect cultural values through binary oppositions between corresponding scenes, characters, or items.
4) Roland Barthes suggested narratives work through five codes - action, enigma, semic, symbolic, and cultural - that activate the reader's interpretation.
Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots.
To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.

How information systems are built or acquired puts information, which is what they should be about, in a secondary place. Our language adapted accordingly, and we no longer talk about information systems but applications. Applications evolved in a way to break data into diverse fragments, tightly coupled with applications and expensive to integrate. The result is technical debt, which is re-paid by taking even bigger "loans", resulting in an ever-increasing technical debt. Software engineering and procurement practices work in sync with market forces to maintain this trend. This talk demonstrates how natural this situation is. The question is: can something be done to reverse the trend?

In response to the urgency and scale required to effectively address climate change, open source solutions offer significant potential for driving innovation and progress. Currently, there is a growing demand for standardization and interoperability in energy data and modeling. Open source standards and specifications within the energy sector can also alleviate challenges associated with data fragmentation, transparency, and accessibility. At the same time, it is crucial to consider privacy and security concerns throughout the development of open source platforms.
This webinar will delve into the motivations behind establishing LF Energy’s Carbon Data Specification Consortium. It will provide an overview of the draft specifications and the ongoing progress made by the respective working groups.
Three primary specifications will be discussed:
-Discovery and client registration, emphasizing transparent processes and secure and private access
-Customer data, centering around customer tariffs, bills, energy usage, and full consumption disclosure
-Power systems data, focusing on grid data, inclusive of transmission and distribution networks, generation, intergrid power flows, and market settlement data

2. The Theory
• TODOROV’S THEORY – Todorov proposed a basic
structure for all narratives. He stated that films
and programmes begin with an equilibrium, a
calm period. Then agents of disruption cause
disequilibrium, a period of unsettlement and
disquiet. This is then followed by a renewed state
of peace and harmony for the protagonists and a
new equilibrium brings the chaos to an end. The
simplest form of narrative (sometimes referred to
as ‘Classic’ or ‘Hollywood’ narrative).
3. The structure of the theory
• All media texts tell us some kind of
story, when watching film or TV show, the
structure of the story or script normally
relates to Todorov’s theory. They begin with a
equilibrium, then there is a disruption to the
equilibrium, how the disruption is resolved
and then towards the end they start to build
up to a new equilibrium.
4. Structure of the theory
• A narrative normally has two parts a structure
and a collection of elements.
• Elements include images, texts that are used
to create situations and are also used to
resolve situations which relate to his theory.
