Turbines that use water as the working fluid
for the production of power are known as

turbines (based on the interaction of the
fluid on the blades)
Can further be classified on the basis of
head available at the inlet, specific speed, and
according to flow direction
1. Action of water on the runner (the rotating element of
turbine)—impulse and reaction
2. Direction of flow—tangential flow, radial flow, axial flow, and
mixed (radial + axial) flow
3. Available head—high head (H > 300 m), medium head (50 m
< H < 300 m), and low head (H < 50 m)
4. Specific speed is the speed of geometrically similar turbine
which produces unit power when operated under unit head—
low, medium, and high specific speed turbines

head.
Gross head indicates the difference in
head and tail race levels.
Net head is the actual head available at
the turbine inlet and is computed as
gross head minus frictional losses in the

A turbine (from the Latin turbo, a vortex, related to the Greek is a rotary mechanical device that extracts energy from a fluid flow and converts it into useful work. The work produced by a turbine can be used for generating electrical power when combined with a generator A turbine is a turbomachine with at least one moving part called a rotor assembly, which is a shaft or drum with blades attached. Moving fluid acts on the blades so that they move and impart rotational energy to the rotor. Early turbine examples are windmills and waterwheels.

CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.

2. What is Hydraulic Machines ?
Hydraulic machines are defined as those
machines which convert either hydraulic energy
(energy possessed by water) into mechanical energy
(P.E+K.E) or mechanical energy into hydraulic energy.

• The hydraulic machines, which converts the

7. Pelton Turbine
- High head, Tangential flow, Impulse turbine, Horizontal shaft.
- This turbine is named after L.A Pelton,
an American engineer.
- The water strikes the bucket along the tangent of the runner.
- Head= 50m to1300m
- Specific speed= 8.5 to 30 (single jet)
- Specific speed= 30 to 51 (two or more jets)

9. Pelton Turbine – The Basic Working Principle :-
- Working principle of Pelton turbine is simple. When a high
speed water jet injected through a nozzle hits buckets of Pelton
wheel; it induces an impulsive force. This force makes the
turbine rotate.
- Fig. Shows the runner of a Pelton wheel.
- The shape of buckets is of a double hemispherical cup or
Bowl.

11. Francis Turbine
- The inward flow reaction turbine having radial discharge at
outlet.
- This turbine is named after an American scientist
J.B. Francis.
- Mixed flow, medium head reaction turbine.
Head = 40-600 m.
Flow rate = 10-700 m^3/s.
- Specific Speed = 51 to 255.
12. Working of Francis turbine :-
- In modern Francis Turbine, the water enters the runner of the turbine in the radial
direction at outlet and leaves in the axial direction at the inlet of the runner. Thus
the modern Francis Turbine is a mixed flow type turbine.
- Most important part of Francis turbine is its runner. It is fitted with a collection of
complex shaped blades as shown in Fig.
- In runner water enters radially, and leaves axially. During the course of flow,
water glides over runner blades as shown in figure below.
- Blades of Francis turbine are specially shaped. So when water flows over it, a low
pressure will be induced on one side, and high pressure on the other side. This
will result in a lift force.
13. Kaplan Turbine
- This turbine is named after an Austrian Engineer,
V. Kaplan.
- Axial flow, low head reaction turbine.
- Kaplan turbines are suitable for power extraction when water energy is
available at low head and high flow rate. Following are the operating
conditions Kaplan turbine is best suitable for
Head = 2-25 m
Flow rate = 70-800 m^3/s Specific speed = 255 to
860
14. Working of Kaplan turbine :-
- In Kaplan turbine flow is entered through a spiral casing. Decreasing
area of casing makes sure that flow is entered to the central portion
almost at uniform velocity throughout the perimeter. Water after
crossing the guide vanes passes over the runner. Finally it leaves
through a draft tube.
