A sentence is composed of at least one independent clause that expresses a complete thought or idea through a subject and predicate. There are two types of clauses: independent clauses which can stand alone, and dependent clauses which cannot stand alone. Sentences can be simple, with one independent clause, or compound, with two or more independent clauses joined by coordinating conjunctions such as for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so.
