NETWORK?
Network
 A computer network is defined as the interconnection of two or
more computers.
 It is done to enable the computers to communicate and share
available resources.
 Networks can be classified by the geographical area they cover
 Allows communication and collaboration between users
COMPONENTS OF COMPUTER NETWORK
Two or more computers
Cables as links between the computers
A network interfacing card(NIC) on each
computer
Switches
Software called operating system(OS)
BENEFITS OF COMPUTER NETWORK
 Increased speed
 Reduced cost
 Improved security
 Centralized software managements
 Electronic mail
 Flexible access
DISDAVATAGES OF NETWORKS
High cost of installation
Requires time for administration
Failure of server
Cable faults
Types of Networks
 LAN (Local area Network )
 MAN (Metropolitan Area Network )
 WAN (Wide Area Network )
LOCAL AREA NETWORK(LAN)
 LAN is a network which is designed to operate over a
small physical area such as an office, factory or a group
of buildings.
 LAN’s are easy to design and troubleshoot
 Exchange of information and sharing of resources
becomes easy because of LAN.
LOCAL AREA NETWORK(LAN)
In LAN all machines are connected to a
single cable.
Different types of topologies such as star,
tree, bus, ring, etc. Can be used
It is usually a privately owned network.
Advantages of LAN
 LAN allow sharing of expensive resources such as laser printers
and high-capacity , high speed mass storage devices among a
number of users.
 LAN allows high speed exchange of essential information between
key people in an organization.
 If properly managed, this will provide greater efficiency and
productivity.
 Through LAN, one can store all critical data at a central place
Disadvantages of LAN
 LAN software requires memory space in each of the computers
used on the network
 LAN adds another level of complexity to the computer operation.
 Some control on the part of a user is lost.
 LAN has security problems.
Some types of security system must be implemented for protecting
data.
Metropolitan Area Network
 It is in between LAN & WAN technology that covers the
entire city.
 It uses similar technology as LAN.
 It can be a single network such as cable TV network, or
a measure of connecting a number of LAN’s o a large
network so that resources can be shared LAN to LAN as
well as device to device.
Metropolitan Area Network
 Large network that connects different organizations
 Shares regional resources
 Branch offices are connected to head offices
through MANs.
 It may be a single network such as cable television
network available in many cities.
Advantages of MAN
 Extremely efficient and provide fast communication via high-speed
carriers, such as fibre optic cables.
 It provides a good back bone for large network and provides greater
access to WANs.
 The dual bus used in MAN helps the transmission of data in both
directions simultaneously.
 A MAN usually encompasses several blocks of a city or an entire city.
Disadvantages of MAN
 More cable required for a MAN connection from one place to
another.
 It is difficult to make the system secure from hackers
 It requires more cables for connection from one place to the
other compare to LAN.
 Network installation requires skilled technicians and network
administrators
Wide Area Network
 Network that covers large geographic area using many
types of media
 Internet is world’s largest WAN
 WAN with a very large geographical area for instant a
country or even beyond the border
 Also called “enterprise networks” if they are privately
owned by a large company
Advantages of WAN
WAN covers larger geographical area.
The software files are shared among all the users. Hence all
will have access to latest files.
Organizations can form their global integrated network
through WAN
Disadvantages of WAN
 Initial investment costs are higher
 It is difficult to maintain the network. It requires skilled
technicians and network administrators.
 There are more errors and issues due to wide coverage
and use of different technologies.
 It has lower security compare to LAN and MAN due to
wider coverage
Comparison between the three types of computer networks
Conclusion
 In the new era of computer and networking
system it can’t be ignored that Without network
system life becomes so difficult.
 Again it plays an vital role in the field of
modern IT.
 So we should use it a proper and safe way.
