1. Ability Tests

Verbal Reasoning Numerical Reasoning Diagrammatic (Abstract) Reasoning

This three part test is widely used by graduate recruiters and the level of difficulty of the
test questions is aimed at graduates. We run group test sessions in Semester 1 and early
in Semester 2. This is probably the best way to get realistic test experience and feedback
about your results. If you are unable to attend a group session please ask about
alternatives at your Careers Centre.

The Civil Service supplies us each year with a disk for candidates to gain computer
based practice. The disk includes data interpretation and verbal organisation tests.

The Myers Briggs Type Indicator is a personal inventory that will help you understand
how you like
to take in information or look at things, how you like to make decisions, use your time
and in
general organise yourself. The MBTI is based on the theories of Carl Jung, a Swiss
physician
psychologist, who developed one of the most comprehensive current psychological
theories to
explain human personality – ‘Psychological Type’.



How the MBTI works


The indicator is based on four scales, which describes four sets of mental process.
Each scale
represents two ends of a continuum of two preferences.
Extravert/Introvert
Sensing/Intuiting
Thinking/Feeling
Judging/Perceiving
The scores you obtain on the questionnaire that you complete indicate how clear your
preference is
on each end of the scales. There are 16 possible profiles and no profile is better or worse
than
another.



How long will it take to complete?


The questionnaire will normally take around 30 minutes to complete. Once that has
been scored
you will be able to attend a group feedback session, which will last approximately 60
minutes.

The MBTI can help you in your career planning and choice by:


Giving you a better understanding of yourself.
Giving you a better understanding and appreciation of others.
Helping you to understand your preferred work environment.
Helping you to understand your own strengths.
Improving your ability to communicate.
Helping with your problem solving abilities.

The emphasis is therefore on discovering the full extent of your assets and exploring
opportunities
rather than matching you to a particular job.

Does it measure my abilities or skills?

No, the MBTI measure your preferences in the 4 scales. Each person uses all eight
preferences at different times. The classic example is signing our name. We all use a
preferred hand. We can write with the other hand but it may feel odd. The same applies to
our preferences. We tend to use certain aspects of our personality more readily than
others do.

4. PROSPECT (HE)

This computer based guidance system is not a psychometric test. However, it does
provide a helpful self assessment framework which is used to generate and explore
occupational suggestions. Prospect (HE) is available as an additional application on the
network.

Ability Tests Verbal Reasoning Numerical Reasoning Diagrammatic (Abstract) Reasoning This three part test is widely used by graduate recruiters and the level of difficulty of the test questions is aimed at graduates. We run group test sessions in Semester 1 and early in Semester 2. This is probably the best way to get realistic test experience and feedback about your results. If you are unable to attend a group session please ask about alternatives at your Careers Centre. 1.2. Civil Service Tests 2.3. Myers Briggs Type Indicator The Civil Service supplies us each year with a disk for candidates to gain computer based practice. The disk includes data interpretation and verbal organisation tests. Inserted 12/12/07 Finding A Job – Resources MVP Careers Information 9 of 11 Job Hunt – Psychometric Tests – Part Three The Myers Briggs Type Indicator is a personal inventory that will help you understand how you like to take in information or look at things, how you like to make decisions, use your time and in general organise yourself. The MBTI is based on the theories of Carl Jung, a Swiss physician psychologist, who developed one of the most comprehensive current psychological theories to explain human personality – ‘Psychological Type’. How the MBTI works The indicator is based on four scales, which describes four sets of mental process. Each scale represents two ends of a continuum of two preferences.

Extravert/Introvert Sensing/Intuiting Thinking/Feeling Judging/Perceiving The scores you obtain on the questionnaire that you complete indicate how clear your preference is on each end of the scales. There are 16 possible profiles and no profile is better or worse than another. How long will it take to complete? The questionnaire will normally take around 30 minutes to complete. Once that has been scored you will be able to attend a group feedback session, which will last approximately 60 minutes. How the process can help you The MBTI can help you in your career planning and choice by: Giving you a better understanding of yourself. Giving you a better understanding and appreciation of others. Helping you to understand your preferred work environment. Helping you to understand your own strengths. Improving your ability to communicate. Helping with your problem solving abilities. It does not tell you Everything about yourself. What career to take. What career to avoid.
  • 3. The emphasis is therefore on discovering the full extent of your assets and exploring opportunities rather than matching you to a particular job. No, the MBTI measure your preferences in the 4 scales. Each person uses all eight preferences at different times. The classic example is signing our name. We all use a preferred hand. We can write with the other hand but it may feel odd. The same applies to our preferences. We tend to use certain aspects of our personality more readily than others do. Look at some Sample Tests available online, www.universityoflife.com and www.personalitytests.com 4. PROSPECT (HE) This computer based guidance system is not a psychometric test. However, it does provide a helpful self assessment framework which is used to generate and explore occupational suggestions. Prospect (HE) is available as an additional application on the network.
