Task Force On Sustainable Lifestyles PresentationTom Gater
Lifestyles are part of our identity; people express their social position, political preferences and psychological aspirations to others through them. Lifestyles define and differentiate us. They are the way we live our lives.
Lifestyles are shaped by a whole host of factors. Their roots are in culture, politics, economics and social norms. For sustainable lifestyles to enter our cultures and societies, to become part of our everyday life, they must be developed at all levels. They need to be enabled and encouraged by the social and technical systems and institutions that surround us. People will only swap their car for public transport if there’s an efficient and cost-effective public transport system.

MET Range 2017 - Road, MTB, Active, Children and Active HelmetsPablo Álvarez
MET comes from a proud tradition of focus. A focus on material
usage and technology. A focus on design and functionality.
A focus on safety.
Our pride comes from the fact that at MET, the helmet is
priority, the first line of defense in protecting a cyclist’s
passion to ride. We don’t make the bikes, we don’t make the
cleats - we design the key to any rider’s ultimate security
on road, trail or venue.
A MET helmet is a true statement of devotion to the ride.
When your prince charming gives your kids nightmares: Case studies in nonprof...Communicate & Howe!
My presentation to nonprofits in York Region about effective use of social media to expand program reach. It shares case studies of the awareness campaigns that I created for Women's Crisis Services of Waterloo Region through the process of creating a nonprofit communications strategy.
Presented to a gathering of small nonprofits at The Family Centre in Kitchener. This presentation starts with the fundamentals of social media that distinguish it from other communication options and are necessary to understand for success on any platform. The second half looks at considerations for which social media to use including a review of what to consider for specific options.
This presentation shares fundamental principles that help you to successfully use any form of social media. Rather than a social media 101, it's about understanding how social media is different from traditional media.
This presentation looks at the steps required to develop a communications strategy or plan. It's aimed primarily at the nonprofit sector but is applicable to a wide variety of users. Visit communicateandhowe.com for more details in my blog post series "Nonprofit Communications Strategy."
This is a team session that I lead in January discussing the importance of Social Media Optimization including: social media tactics, social media analytics and techniques to aid in community management for social profiles of all different kinds.
Users were also asked to tweet their questions during the luncheon to contribute to discussion later.
This presentation describes the tools that Twitter offers to help you find and connect with your target audience. It also offers a list of not to do steps to help increase your chances of success.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
