4. Ten Tips for Growing Twitter Skills
1. Set your profile to public. Make sure you
have a picture and bio statement.
2. Log in once a day for15 minutes and check
your notifications.
3. Reply to people!
4. Find good people to follow.
5. Spend some time lurking / re-tweeting.
6. Write more original tweets than re-tweets
7. Copy-paste links into tweets.
8. Use #Hashtags (2 at the most).
9. Practice! Practice makes better.
10.Tell your friends your @UserName.
5. Ten basic skills in Twitter
1. Write a tweet (use whole words wherever possible; edit back)
2. Add a hashtag (must start with a letter) + must have a space before the # for it to work!

3. Mention an @User in a tweet + must have a space before the @ for it to work!
4. Insert a link (copy paste into the tweet)
• Tweet a link from a browser window - look for the article’s SHARE symbol or else use the Browser ‘export’/share symbol
5. Reply to a tweet (be conversational)
• Reply to your own tweet (make a thread), reply to yourself again (the thread gets longer)
6. Retweet (support good content)
7. Quote a tweet (add your point of view or context information)
8. Send a Direct Message
• Reply to a Direct Message
9. Delete a tweet or direct message
10. Pin a tweet

7. Twitter habits that build a network
• Log in regularly – 15 minutes a day does the trick.
• Check your notifications and reply to people.
• Write more original tweets than retweets.
• Include only 2 hashtags (more is seen as spam)
• Must have a bio pic, a name that is easy to ‘tell’ people
• Build your network strategically – who to follow; who to mention
• Lurk (follow) a hashtag chat (#WeSpeechies on a Tuesday)
• Respond in a hashtag chat (remember to add the hashtag!)
• Back-channel chat on topics of interest (TV, real life events, conference tweets)
8. Twitter safety and enjoyment
• Mute a @User (tweeting too much? Not interested in content?)
• Block a @User (being abusive? Posting spam?)
• Report a @User
• Are you being impersonated?
• Use Twitter help
• Apply for verification
• Cyber-bullying; abuse - report to authorities
9. Twitter leadership
• Get good at tweeting - lead a ‘hashtag chat’
• First take part in some hashtag chats as a participant
• Teach others/show others how to use Twitter
• Use Twitter to live-tweet content at a conference - be a reporter
• If you blog, tweet about it.

• Before you do your research (tweeting the lit review)

• Be high on ENGAGEMENT; respond to people - be approachable
• Be HELPFUL; support your peers and let the public know how to find
information in Twitter in your area - curate information effectively.
