Twitter Assignment
CI 350
@ci350class: This is the twitter page for our class CI 350. It is ran by the class’s
instructor, Harold Blanco. On this page there are posts about numerous things such as
current events, technology, and classroom techniques. Aside from these posts there are
class announcements and posts about things we have discussed in class. This twitter page
is good to follow because it can link you to some things that can be very useful while in
the classroom. I like that it helps lead you to websites that provide information on tips to
make incorporating technology into the classroom easier. This account is a good way for
our class to communicate and often times classroom announcements on here. That was
my favorite part because, for example, we were to use #interfest for our extra credit post
for going to the international festival. By posting this instruction on twitter, our whole
class was aware of what to do whenever they went to post their picture to prove they
were there. After our class was instructed to follow the account, I believe that the overall
theme began to focus on the classroom and providing materials to help us students.
Although it is a helpful account, I found it repetitive in some ways. Certain topics or
current events were tweeted about multiple times. My overall personal opinion on this
account is that it is a good tool for us to use in the class. It provided an effective way of
communication and allowed the class to have access to instructions or extra tips for the
classroom. I know that I will find this account useful to me after this semester is over.
@wiseinwv: I really did not enjoy this account. It was very focused on what is happening
in the schools and provided information on numerous things occurring in local, West
Virginia schools. While this could be a good thing I must say that they are too focused on
the topics. I felt that I was constantly pounded with facts and my newsfeed swarmed with
tweets form this account. This specifically focused on bringing a better sex education into
schools. If I could pick a favorite thing it would be how dedicated they are to focus on a
certain topic for so long. That is my only positive thought on this account. I know that
they are trying to persuade schools to have better sex education courses, but that is all
that was tweeted about. There were facts and comments that I just found to be
unnecessary. They took up the timeline and provided boring news that caused me to
scroll right on by. The theme that I noticed the most was the topics of teen pregnancy and
STD’s. I personally did not like this account. I know that there is an ongoing issue with
the topic of sex education in schools. Yes, something needs to be done about it, but I feel
like this account annoyed me instead of persuading me to help boost the amount of sex
education within our schools. I also did not like that this account constantly shared tweets
from other accounts. The things they shared seemed to only add to the pile of the things
2. that they were over informing us about. I will definitely unfollow this account whenever
our class ends.
@shannoninottawa: This account is ran by Shannon Smith. She is a seventh and eighth
grade principal for Glen Cairn Public Schools in Canada. She is also one of the people
who were highlighted on the YouTube video that we were to watch. Her account
frequently shared things about education and how to improve it. Along with that it
seemed that she also used this as a personal account to connect with friends and family.
This account did not bother me and I wouldn’t say there was something that bothered me
from this account. It was relaxed and was rather enjoyable to read what she posted. Her
theme was definitely building and improving the attitudes within the classroom. I think
that she not only focused on the student’s attitudes, but also the teacher’s attitudes. I
particularly favored how she shared the news of her school district. It was interesting to
see how other school systems, even those from another country, were ran. She also
seemed to be very happy and passionate about her job. I enjoyed the fact that she focused
on having a good day and a good class attitude. Her informat ion seems to be very helpful
to me, even if it is just an uplifting tweet on how to improve your classroom. After the
semester I will continue to follow this account just to see where her school district is
going.
@gcouros: This twitter account is ran by a man named George Couros. He is a principal
and is also a guy that was featured in the YouTube video that we were to watch. This
twitter page is overall an enjoying and informative page to follow. I think that it is a good
way to find new information and find new connections to other principals, teachers, and
education organizations all around us. The theme of Couro’s account seems to be
focusing on driving social media and other technology into the classroom. I could tell he
was also focused with connecting with others to understand their ideas for the classroom.
As someone who is interested in using technology in my class, I found it helpful to
follow the things he had posted. I liked how he posted the views of other educators and
also encouraged others to follow them on their journey of integrating technology into our
classes. My favorite thing he tweeted about was a link to an article called Moving beyond
the Textbook. I liked this because it gave tips and a back story on how to switch to
electronic textbooks. There wasn’t anything that I hated about this account. Overall I
found that it was informative and it helped me find ways to incorporate technology into
my classes in the future.
@bradmcurrie: This account is ran by Brad Currie. He is a google educator who
encourages the use of google programs within classrooms. He is also an edcamp
organizer where he goes around and discusses. I enjoyed reading his tweets and I feel like
3. he really focuses on the theme of using technology to help students gain an interest in
STEM-related careers. I enjoyed the fact that he was so excited about bridging the gap
between education and technology. My favorite tweet that he posted was where he was so
excited that his third grade child was using google within his classroom. This helped me
reassure that he was really passionate about this because not only was he interested in this
for others, but also his personal family. I also enjoyed how he linked and shared
examples of other’s uses of google within their classroom. As someone who has a google
account, but doesn’t really use it for anything other than email, this helped me learn new
ways to use the program. It also showed me plans and ways to use it in elementary
classrooms. I enjoyed this account and there is nothing negative that I have to say about
it. It is overall an informative tool for me. I think that the things he describes and shares
are beneficial to all teachers.
