2. What is TV White Space(TVWS)
• TV White Spaces (TVWS) are vacant
frequencies made available for unlicensed use
at locations where spectrum is not being used
by licensed services.
This spectrum is located in
the VHF (54-216 MHz) and
UHF (470-698 MHz) bands
and has characteristics that
make it highly desirable for
wireless communications

• For outdoor deployments VHF and
UHF spectrum will provide up to 5
times the coverage of solutions
deployed at 2.4GHz.
• In indoor applications the
improvement in propagation through

• This breakthrough technology was nicknamed
“Super Wi-Fi” because of its superior range and
its ability to penetrate obstacles such as trees,

• While Wi-Fi has a relatively limited range, and can
be blocked by walls and other obstacles, a
network utilizing TV white-space technology can
cover a greater area than Wi-Fi while requiring
less equipment

5. Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS)
Performance
• Microwave links require line-of-sight (LOS)
between the points being connected.
• In rural areas with many trees or rugged
terrain, the tall towers necessary to provide
this line-of-sight connection make microwave
an expensive and unfeasible solution.
