Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

depicts precise times for a
designated target audience.
There are 5 segments and
these are firstly categorised.
From breakfast, day time TV
for the
unemployed/housewives,
kids/teenagers will be on TV
after school targeting them
with carton shows such as The
Simpsons, then early
entertainment such as
news/soaps. Finally adult
shows ;these programmes are
typically series, reality shows,
documentaries.
3. 1.Early morning- News/Breakfast shows
Targeted at all demographics: Children, students and the elderly.
2. Day time- cheap shows, preschool children shows
Targeted to pre school children, unemployed, housewives and the elderly.
3.Afternoon entertainment/lunch
Family friendly content as it will aim to young children, housewives, elderly
and husbands can gain access to the TV.
4.Evening/Prime time
This is usually the time that the audience from all ages will either finish
school or work so it will appeal to a larger audience.
5.Pre watershed
Teenagers and adults can access this as this is the time they will be actively
consuming TV shows. Children will usually be going to bed at this time
schedule only targeting an older demographic with their content.
6.Post watershed
This is aimed at adults as this will be suitable content for their age range.
Dismissing children.
4. 1. News- This is on various of times for people
throughout the day to catch up on the current
affairs in society. This is a popular genre due to
individuals wanting to be informed and updated
with the events that take place in the world.
2. Reality TV- This genre has gained momentous
of praises within the teenage-adult and even a
family demographic, which are either on
everyday or weekends E.g. Love island
3. Dramas- These shows are heavily advertised
on their terrestrial channels, grasping a regular
audience to that channel. Caters to a family
demographic and is on during a prime time
schedule.
4. Soap operas- These are shown on an everyday
basis on specific timings, which usually attracts
families to watch them. The continuous story
lines captures an audience, which stay with the
show and regularly watch it.
Genres such as sports and sitcoms
are also quiet popular on TV.
6. Channels put programmes on repeat for reasons,
which are..
To fill up spaces as the channel needs to play 24
hours a day.
This could allow the TV company to save money as
an alternative of having to purchase new
programmes in, as they will use old programmes
instead. This results in the programmes getting as
much help and money towards the shows that are
already paid for.
This links to how channel 4+5 imports shows from
America in order to appeal to mass audience and
demographic that enjoy their content, and not just
UK based programmes.
7. Watershed- is when the TV channels are only
suitable for adults, not children as a result
the time for this is after 9pm.
8. Counter programming=The practise of offering television programmes to attract an
audience from another television station during a major event. E.g. Britain's got Talent vs
The X Factor.
Marathon= Viewers or readers engage many hours worth of media in a condensed time
period. E.g. friends, Netflix when they put all episodes out at once, special events, live
episodes or drama when programme is attracting a large audience.
Stunting= One off specials that could involve an ‘extra’ helping of a show.
Zoning= Regular theme nights, so an audience will get hooked on watching that channel
on a certain night. For example, NBC airs comedies on Thursday nights.
Hammocking- Putting an unpopular/weak programme between two stronger ones.
Pre-echo= putting a new, or less popular show on before a popular one in order to catch
the viewers that may tune in early.
Inheritance=putting a new, or less popular show on after a popular show, in the hope
that viewers will remain transfixed by their TV set.
Stripping= Having the same programs or genre on the same time everyday. E.g. come
dine with me
Watershed=When TV programmes which might be unsuitable for children can be
broadcast.
Tent-polling= Strong program in the middle, with weaker new programs on either
side.
Bridging=Bridging is being used when a station tries to prevent the audience from
changing channels during a junction point.
