Editing the documentary
Step by step process with
screengrabs
To begin with our documentary we added an introduction to
our sequence with archive footage from ‘ouija:the origin of
evil’
We then included a title sequence which a cross dissolve transition to
ease into the nexct sequence. This sequence we filmed of us spelling
out ‘the other side’ the title of our documentary on a oujia board, to
which we included scary music behind to reflect our genre.
After that the title appears which we imported as a image that we
created which we created on paint.
We then asked the public on the streets a question to which we made sure to cut
out with the razor tool, which we positioned one after another in the sequence this
is called vox pops.
We then screen recorded the definition of the supernatural on our phone to which it
became a video that we imported onto our desktop and dragged into the sequence.
We then added an expotential fade at the end of the music
After we moved onto our first interview which was with a skeptic within a mise en
scene of science, we included the name and job of the interviewee to ensure the
audience are aware of who they are watching, with a black screen behind to enhance
it with the font style:Trajan pro 3. We added a morph cut to link to clips within one to
make sure it smoothly transitions together and not like two spearate clips.
We used cross dissolve as a transition between any jump cuts and
interviews in order to make the documentary flow smoothly and have
continuity.
Then we added a cutaway that we filmed of a tracking shot into the tunnel of our
location for the interview in the williamson tunnels. This is where the music is added
in the background again and a voiceover explaining our thoughts on the supernatural
in society.
We then included a cutaway in the tunnel to portray the inside of our location
for the audience to get a glimpse of our setting, which we then added an
expotential fade on the end to transition into the next interview.
In addition, we then made sure the interview came up with the black box with the name
and occupation of that interviewee to reinforce that they have valid insight on the
subject matter in order for the audience to trust them.
We then imported archive footage from the conjuring as it is relevant to what the
interviewee was talking about.
We added images in order to break up parts of
the interview these were relevant images
according to the interview.
Next we uploaded our next interview with Judith Keane a wiccan priestess , as
she discusses how she got into witchcraft.
As a visual aid we added a zoom
cutaway of a book surrounding the
topic she is discussing.
Alongside another cutaway
of a panning shot of her
altar.
We added an image in order in order to give
the audience an insight of whom she is
mentioning , this adds an element ofstar
theory as some members of the audience may
be aware of her.
We added this cutaway in order to transition into the next interview
as it relates to the idea it goes from the witches interview to the
mediums after. We also inserted non-diegetic sound of music: ‘I put a
spell on you’ this was intended as a familiarity perspective for the
audience as it is well known.
After that we uploaded our next interview with
Nick Humphries who is a psychic medium , as
she discusses how he got into this practise.
Included a relevant cutaway which is handheld of an experience he is
discussing in order to give it a realistic effect for the audience.
We then used clips from
the second camera on
significant parts of the
interview that we wanted
to highlight and make the
audience draw their
attention to.
It then transition back to the witches then the medium and paranormal
team interview as we have broken up parts of our interview for our
structure to not be boring for the audience. We included another relevant
panning shot of the bible. A tracking shot of a group of people.
We then included more
archive footage to make
it more engaging for the
audience to get a
visually aid of what the
paranormal teams
interview are talking
about.
We then added another piece of archive footage to change the theme in the
documentary about representations in the media of the supernatural as we included
a voiceover during the clip plays.
Afterwards we added a prop of a Ouija board, in order to be relevant with what Bernard is
discussing , this makes the audience perhaps immediately draw their attention as this may
be an interesting element to the documentary.
We then included a cutaway of the Ouija board as a zoom as we wanted to
highlight the importance of this object within the supernatural realm.
Moreover, we added more images to reinforce the fearful side that the
media present the Ouija board as.
It then jumps back to the witch interview as she is talking about witchcraft
representation.
We then incorporated archive footage as the interviewee references this TV
show as a representation for witchcraft. This would make the audience who
are familiar with this show feel a sense of nostalgia.
After that we then inserted archive footage in the medium interview to
represent a controversial medium in the media that the audience will be
aware of and the show it comes from.
It then transitions back to Nick Humphries interview, as we have
broken it into our preferred structure to make the documentary
more enticing as it wouldn't be just one interview being played all at
once which the audience may become passive.
We used relevant archive footage as Nick talks
about the representation of mediums, making
us choose appropriate archive to illustrate his
views.
After that it goes back to the witch interview as she
is displaying her views on witchcraft in the media.
We used the pencil tool to alter the sound levels so
they all match.
We included a cutaway of what the witch is describing as anyone can
be a witch.
Then we used a clip from the second camera
on significant part of the interview that we
wanted to emphasise and make the audience
draw their concentration to.
After it transitions back to Bernard keys interview, to give his
thoughts on this topic of representations.
As a result, within his interview he mentions spirits passing over
leading us to find applicable archive footage to portray this.
Lastly, it goes to Nick Humphries interview to end of with his opinion on
life after death.
We overlapped his interview with a cutaway that is relevant to
what he is speaking in order to emphasis his statement. We
included music at the end to bring more attention to what he is
saying.
To end the 5 minutes we added a black screen so the
documentary doesn't cut off and seem rushed, we did this by
adding it from the graphics menu and using a black screen.
