Letter from Franklin’s desk
It can be a big wow when you slow down from the business of everyday life, and you observe where you are coming from and where you going to.
The past year has been one of those wow moments when the end of another year arrived in a surprisingly exciting form, when we realise that we are having so much fun and the diary has almost no days left. As the magic of development and beauty graced us till the very last of the month.
We have celebrated our ‘Change Agents’ in the making graduating in Malmesbury and Worcester Prison, our Ivy Nyovane Teachers graduating their Montessori Training; We have been incredibly blessed with both our ‘Parole Portfolio’ where you wil meet Monwabisi Mbetane, who graces his community with ballroom dancing lessons as part of his COC Activation and further development at Ivy Nyovane Educare Centre. You will also find our outreach for lovely musical talent in the community of Elsies River.
So join us as we say farewell to 2014, with hugs and warm wishes as we spend quality time with our families during the festive season, discovering new horizons to inspire us for a new year.
Enjoy Turqouise – the December edition for 2014.
Happy holidays from the desk!

Reboot Podcast #30 - Who Do You Turn To? - with Yancey Strickler and Ian Hogarthrebootio
There’s a saying: Behind every great man is a great woman. I would add: behind every great entrepreneur is a great friend. The entrepreneurial path simply can’t be traveled alone. So when Jerry asked Kickstarter’s CEO and Co-founder, Yancey Strickler: Who do you turn to? He response was immediate: Ian Hogarth, Co-founder and Chairman of Songkick. We’re grateful to have Yancey and Ian join Jerry in today’s podcast to talk about their friendship, the importance of peer relationships in entrepreneurship, the relief of being heard by those who can empathize with your experience, as well as those who can challenge you from a place of love and deep understanding. Enjoy this discussion with Jerry, Ian Hogarth, and Yancey Strickler.
This conversation was recorded in early December, and since then Ian has announced his intention to give up the Co-CEO role at Soundkick and focus on his role at Chairman.
Reboot Podcast #29 - Who's in Your Corner? - with Carrie Barryrebootio
Carrie Barry has had her own great challenges to overcome, including real struggles at home that forced her to leave at the age of 12 and strike out on her own. She’s proven resilient, stitching the struggles of her past into the fabric of her being and choosing to appreciate and utilize that pain into the work she does today. Carrie Barry is former Olympic Boxer and entrepreneur who owns and runs a boxing gym in Boulder where people come to break a sweat, get a hug, and learn some valuable life lessons. She also happens to be, in a twist, a boxing coach for 2 of Reboot’s finest: Jerry and Ali. Join Jerry in getting a little coaching, and a lot of inspiration in this conversation with Carrie Barry.

Reboot Podcast #31 - Why Being Real Matters- with Evgeny Shadchnevrebootio
So many entrepreneurs seek to model their leadership after the high-profile, successful giants of business. Should I be leader more like Steve Jobs? How can I be more like Jeff Bezos? How can I be more like Travis from Uber? These are not only questions without answers, they are the wrong questions. The real question is, “Who the fuck are you?” You’re not Steve Jobs. You’re not Jeff Bezos. You’re you. What does the leader within you look like?
In today’s conversation, Jerry is joined by Evgeny, Co-founder and CEO of Makers Academy. Ev wrestles with the question of whether it’s possible to scale an organization built around trust, or does success require a leader who governs by fear? Together they discover a more beautiful, more fundamental question --“Who is Evgeny?” In that answer they may find a path to personal alignment and more effective leadership.
Reboot Podcast #33 - Do I Even Have A Superpower?- with Kent Cavender-Baresrebootio
Have you ever asked yourself the question: I wonder if we'd be better off with someone else in my role?
In this podcast, a listener, Kent Cavender-Bares from Rowbots comes to Jerry with a question a similar question about his superpower: "What if my deep integrity, my commitment to simply telling how it is, is the reason we’re unable to fundraise? Do I even have a Superpower? Wouldn’t Rowbots, be further along if someone else was leading?" Jerry and Kent explore the double edge of a superpower, and how the path through his challenges may lie in a new set of questions: How can I be even more like Kent? How can I embrace my superpower? How can I believe in myself? And why is that so damned important?

"Them" is a story about how life scripts develop.
In the 1950's, Canadian-born US psychiatrist Eric Berne developed a theory of personality and a systematic psychotherapy for personal growth and personal change called Transactional Analysis (TA). According to the International Transactional Analysis Association, one of the core concepts of TA is that "people, early in their lives come to the conclusion that their lives will unfold in a predictable way,” short, long, healthy, unhealthy, happy, unhappy, depressed or angry, successful or failed, active or passive. This is known as a life script.
The idea of the life script is that we tend to have an unconscious life plan – like a story – that we make up as children about ourselves and our lives, which we tend to follow even when we are adults. We begin writing our life script (story) as young children as we try to make sense of the world and our place within it. Although it is revised throughout life, the core story is mostly complete by the time we are eight years of age . As adults, our life script is generally completely out of our awareness yet it influences our thoughts, behaviours and feelings in very significant ways.
Them is a sort about how life scripts develop.

“Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakens.” – Carl Jung.
"Work is difficulty and drama, a high-stakes game in which our identity, our self-esteem, and our ability to provide are mixed inside us in a volatile, sometimes explosive ways.” from David Whyte in his incredible book, Crossing the Unknown Sea: Work as a pilgrimage of Identity.
That volatile, explosive mix is a gift. It presents a tremendous opportunity for us to do our own work, our inner work, and further develop our own understanding of self. In our conversation today, Jerry is joined by Henry May, founder and CEO of CoSchool, based in Columbia. Henry comes to Jerry with this very issue: How might the journey of entrepreneurship, specifically his own, open up new opportunities for him to grow? Or said more directly: How might he use his work at Coschool to do the real work on his humanity?

He has a strong facilitation toolbox and always keen to expand as the eternal Student he is.

It is a privilege to present our annual report to you. We have had another incredible year of Change Agent Magic - contributing our special puzzle piece to crime prevention and diversion in our beautiful South Africa.
It moves my soul to experience how those we journey with allow themselves the experience of awakening to more of themselves and a deeper sense of purpose. I often say to our students:
>>Do not underestimate the ripple of your awakening<<
We experience its heartwarming impact on how we live and (un)learn together. A living and (un)learning that is authentic and kind… that is generous… that is honest and transparent… that stretches and encourages… that heals our wounds and edits our old stories. It is a living and (un)learning that allows the student their own unique path… also the tough patches! There is nothing more liberating than >>walking the plank<< of a perception!
Come with me. Experience the unique unfolding of a Change Agent Journey. Students awakening to their inner coach, healer and guide and firing up their entrepreneurial spirit all while assisting and guiding others to do the same.
In Gratitude

FOREWORD by Founder Karina Andersen
“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is not path and leave a trail”
As I journey with our Change Agents through their Circles of Change (COC) I wake more and more up to this inspiring quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson. When each of us live into our Golden Thread and follow its calling, Magic takes place! Each project that we have been so lucky to witness and gently guide in our Change Agent work this year inspires to move beyond what we think we know and open ourselves to the grand adventure! I am deeply grateful for a year that has emptied me and opened me further. Only when we can be fully present with ‘the other’ can we deeply honour their journey and its unfolding. Here at SmilingOne we are curious about the puzzle piece that each of our Students are in our greater puzzle - their unique contribution. We walk hand in hand, we spin the COC Engine inwardly and outwardly, we shape and co-create inspiring projects that heal and inspire youth, families and communities.
Our annual report is a testimony of how each Change Agent leaves a trail as they are drawn by the inner pull towards their purpose - embracing the share they own in the well-being of our Society!
THANK YOU FOR VISITING AND LISTENING ♥ KARINA
We are updating our Slideshare to make sure all our Annual Reports are online to be views and enjoyed by our followers and loyal supports. It is AMAZING to observe the journey walked with amazing Change Agents

My heart continues to be moved deeply by our Change Agent work. We have completed another year - our 9th - of bringing C.O.C. Education to some of the most challenged environments in our Society. I am in AWE of the results we are experiencing; so
many 'seeds' are sprouting and watering other 'seeds' in the process. An awakened individual understands that he/she has so many more options than choosing a life of crime and destruction. I see so much potential; the fire is burning in me/us to do so
much more.
I am aware that we would have achieved nothing without the incredible commitment of men and women who dedicated themselves wholeheartedly to this path. We know that it is not an easy one! My gratitude goes to each of you for having had the courage to choose YOU, for investing in becoming your best version. Life tests us over and over again so that we may purify our intentions and strip off all the layers of past limitations. Consciousness is a daily GYM. There is nothing more attractive than someone who radiates values-based leadership and generously shares of their awakening. This is the true Magic of a Change Agent.
The Change Agent....this is how we address crime in South Africa.

FOREWORD by Karina Andersen, Founder
I am humbled by a year of incredible growth.
We have opened so many new and exciting doors and partnered with like-minded souls who deeply connect to our passion and our purpose. These partnerships have allowed us to extend ourselves even further and gift especially South African youth-at-risk with our enabling platform, a TRI toolkit and our SmilingOne Change Agents!
2018/19 has allowed for years of deeply focused Change Agent work to move to the next level! I love how the journey guides us. It keeps revealing the steps to take. At times we are called to pause and at other times we are called to stretch. It has been a year of huge stretch. It continues to ask for more and that we bow to the process. Only when we bow can we open our hearts and minds to purify our intent. We are here to SERVE a much greater purpose than ourselves. We want to cause ripples of change which will echo in the hearts and minds of those we touch. We want to leave a lasting footprint and be woven into the tapestry of lives transformed forever. Just like nature every single process is connected. WE are all connected! There is a greater rhythm to honour - a grand symphony. My task is to keep us honest and aligned to this wonderful balance which begins with how we as a SmilingOne Team live and practice our own consciousness toolkit, grounding ourselves firmly, moving from our deepest essence.
I am thrilled to share our annual report with you and invite you to celebrate with us the wonderful progress…
In Gratitude, Karina - SmilingOne Founder
We proudly present to you our Annual Report 2019/20.
FOREWORD BY OUR FOUNDER:
TOGETHERNESS is a big theme as I reflect upon the year - it is a journey of remembering that we achieve absolutely nothing on our own AND that we are not on our own. We must be willing to tear down the walls we have built to protect ourselves, to shed the old energy and allow curiosity to take us into new, exciting, collaborative and co-creative spaces. When we take the risk to open ourselves to the GRAND ADVENTURE we begin to experience how similar we all are - we awaken to the spirit of UBUNTU - I AM because WE ARE - and we extend ourselves into this beautiful shared experience.
We meet most of our beneficiaries at a crossroad, between the dark and the light, at the far edges of their experience. We extend an invitation to them - a call to adventure - to take the leap, to step onto our life-changing platform and Awaken the Leader within. It is such a humbling experience to walk the journey next to them as they transform from deep within… UNLEASHING GREATNESS.
ALL IT TAKES IS A MOMENT TO TAKE OFF ON THE RIGHT PATH….
Welcome to our Annual Report 2019/20 - I am so glad you are here ♥︎
May you enjoy our year in words and pictures. And may you feel inspired to join us in our vision… as a Shareholder in the Well-Being of our Society.
with Love, Karina
The year of 2017/18 is our 10th year in loving action and deeply committed contribution to making a difference in our beloved South Africa. It is a milestone! We pause and reflect on the wonderful achievements of our fellow TRI students who have embraced personal values-based leadership and live to be an example. Their success is our success. In true Ubuntu Spirit there is not one without the other!
THE CHANGE AGENT…
this is how we address crime in South Africa.
I am deeply humbled as I witness incredible courage amongst our students. We meet them in some of the toughest environments and extend to them the invite of change. Let us not underestimate what this means! It is for each student a complete rebuild of what he or she knows. It is a daily challenge of meeting and shifting the old energy and choosing a different approach.
You will in our annual report meet these courageous beings and witness what they do with a changed mindset; a mindset that no longer violates or perpetrates; a mindset that cares deeply to restore and heal , to nurture, inspire and to contribute. They have joined the heartbeat of transformation and play a significant role in guiding our SA youth and communities towards a greater future!
May you enjoy our Annual Report
With Love & Appreciation

We are delighted to share our Annual Report 2012/13 with our network.
Foreword by SmilingOne Founder:
As a 16-year-old member of the Thug Life gang puts it, “gang life is like a religion to my family. My father and grandfather were in gangs and they have done time in jail – I will probably end up there as well. It is the way of life here; it is where you learn about respect and get status.”
Our year has been one of fine tuning our approach, merging deeper into the resource we are and walking each step true to our hearts. We are all shareholders in the wellbeing of our society – the SmilingOne Team takes this responsibility very seriously and we know how important our puzzle piece is!
What touches me deeply is that 9 million children (48%) are growing up with absent but living fathers! 3.3 million young people are not in education, training or employment. And as of March 2012: 32% of all inmates in SA prisons were under the age of 25. I experience youth in dire need of inspiration and direction!
We have harvested incredible results from our five years pro-active research! It has proven to us that a very effective way to prevent/divert our youth and youngsters from pursuing the path of crime is to shape positive Role Models who meet the youth at risk where they are at and inspire/guide them towards a different path. This is what the SmilingOne Team is deeply passionate about and invest in. We find and educate these potential Change Agents in some of the most challenged SA environments...

Letter from the CEO:
As I write my inspiration to you today I am reflecting on the seeds we plant in this very special garden of life.
One of our TRI Students in Helderstroom Prison shared with me recently how he is harvesting the fruits of those very early deposits he made in his life, seeds planted with fear and limitation. He is waking up in the middle of his own creation and deeply impacted by its ripple effect. He is shaken. With different tools he is now expanding on his garden, understanding that he is a puzzle piece in a bigger puzzle - we are all connected and each seed has impact. Today he is conscious about sowing seeds with love, care and understanding. And yes, the old trees are still standing as reminders of deep and valuable learning processes - he embraces those with great humility. It has allowed him an understanding as he has healed and a bridge to those who still sow with fear and live in darkness. He is reaching them with his light. He is a Change Agent in the making!
These processes are touching my heart daily... when we begin to live our light beingness and touch those around us. This is why we are here... to unlock an incredible potential.
Let us be curious about the seeds we plant. Let us understand. Let us share our LIGHT

What a truly special 2013 we have had!
I am touched by the many opportunities given to us to facilitate change in our challenged communities in South Africa, I experience so much love, so much joy and a deep connectedness. I am grateful for a very special team of Change Agents that selflessly reach out to touch and teach, simply because they know deep within what it means to both laugh and cry, to rise and fall and experience life in and through its seasons. What makes the difference is the understanding of that each season has its own teaching and once we tap fully into the lessons it comes with we can taste the sweetness of its fruit - deep within us - and we can trust that nothing is there without a reason.
2013 has reminded me of meeting in our shared humanity and that we are not here to do it on our own. Let us travel together! BE together. Nelson Mandela and his legacy inspires this in us - to keep living true to our hearts, that inner deep calling, voices that truly cares, voices that heal and reach out to each other, voices that builds a healthy nation on equality and love. And as we say our goodbye to one of the greatest leaders of our time we also embrace the opportunity to fuel each of our steps with greater awareness and a much broader "WE Consciousness".
May you enjoy our newsletter and tune into the energy of an inspiring season in our SmilingOne Foundation.
We look forward to share much more with you in 2014.
Happy New Year!

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Adding value to the human potential is a privilege and assists the process of building bridges, breaking down the most resistant walls. ONENESS We believe in UNIQUENESS and UNITY. ‘It is about understanding oneself and the role one plays in the bigger ‘puzzle of life’ - the greater purpose. On one hand being tiny compared to the whole – teaching us humbleness – and on the other being highly valuable as each piece of the puzzle is of inestimable value to the wholeness – teaching us worthiness.’ INTEGRITY We enjoy working with our clients and each other openly, honestly and sincerely. We walk the talk and deliver what we promise. OUR ENVIRONMENT We care deeply for our environment and inspire change by our own living example

6. LETTER FROM THE CEO
As we approach the end of another incredibly inspiring year I express my deep-felt gratitude to every single Change Agent who has added their ‘magic' make all our SmilingOne Projects flourish in the most beautiful and organic way. I am so in AWE of you! With a heartfelt desire to be all you can you ‘spill over’ positively in your communities. It inspires me deeply and fuels our intention to do so much more! I have learnt much this year from each one of you. I admire your courage to walk truth and stand ‘naked’ in this truth. I know the path is not easiest one. However… have seen each one of you embrace your mountains as precious gifts and in doing so you have risen beyond. As John C Maxwell said: “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows way.” This is my experience of you!
Thank you!
To our dear friends, sponsors and loyal supporters. Thank you for loving support of SmilingOne Foundation through 2014. We have been incredible blessed to walk this journey with all of you. It is together that we can truly make a difference for our challenged SA communities - young as old. Together is always better!
Thank You!
I wish you all a truly happy festive season and a peaceful 2015

PUT ON YOUR DANCING SHOES
Monwabisi’s COC activation by Franklin It was 2009 that Monwabisi Mbetane saw one of the first Change Agents in training at Brandvlei Maximum Prison, holding the leadership manual called ‘The Responsible Individual’. Little did he know that driven young men is on a journey of leadership and self-guidance. One, he would soon follow.
“Well I left Brandvlei and the boys left my room so I still had the manual and I went through it myself. When I left Brandvlei Prison I went to Heldestroom Prison. There I went through the manual and tried making sense of the manual. After a while I went to Malmesbury Prison and I found Bradley and Malcolm there so I asked them if they are having sessions. I started fully to engage with the manual with the help of a guide.
In April 2014 when I was released from Malmesbury Prison I decided to join the programme to further develop myself and to see what I can do for the community of Langa. A lot of things have changed, and I noticed that there existed a need for activities for the youth. When I got involved with SmilingOne I realised to be fully activated in my Circle Of Change, I needed to have a community project, volunteering myself which is my ‘Caring’. I have ballroom classes with the kids in the community at the Monwabisi Community Centre, I have realised that I can add to the value of the community by planting a seed. In my Circle Of Change I am also activated in my ‘Sharing’ where I have weekly sessions and it helps to my development, where I visit all the areas of myself, body, mind and soul. This helps me to understand why certain things challenge me, where is it coming from and why am I inspired to do things. A sort of interrogation to myself. And my ‘Resource’ is my studies, where I study a Bookkeeping course to improve my skills. And I also have a small entrepreneur business to sustain myself. In my studies I’m very confident in accounting and economy, having to pay more attention to project administration and business calculation. Further on my studies are going well. With my business I can definitely see that its growing and me and my partner are reviewing everything to detail. There are some challenges but I guess my studies gives me a change to deal with it, where I can overview and calculate how to manage the business.
My motivation for other parolees or those who are still in prison is to connect with what you were doing in prison, meaning that you must find something inside prison that you are going to keep yourself busy with that can develop you for when you come out of prison. Set yourself goals to focus on because outside is a different environment than inside. And there are many things that can distract you from your goals but hold on to focus and be patient. Accept the place where you find yourself, don’t compare yourself with others and material things, indulging in things you can’t afford. Stay humble and focused and the doors will open for you.”

REINTEGRATION
Malcolm’s ‘Car Project’ (The Boys from Ocean View) by Malcolm Booysen
When I started to do the ‘Car Project’ in Ocean View my main inspiration was to give back to the community and share myself with my community, the passion that I have for cars. And little did I know that there is so much more in the detail that I ever imagined. Where the past few months has taught me a lot about myself and with the ‘Car Project’ that I did not know.
I suffered an injury to my foot while at work and it took me to a deeper process where I had to connect with my inner-self. When my foot was injured it restrained me from a lot of stuff that I wanted to do. I even could not drive anymore. Moving a lot in the momentum, it taught me a valuable lesson to sit and observe. Now our ‘Car Project’ is slower but it is gaining momentum, connecting to the fact that the ‘Car Project’ is us. Realising that the project gives us more angles on who we are. Meaning that we are making progress the way we make progress within ourselves. Everything takes time and with time comes the learning of patience. With sessions things are great, where I get to explore all the concepts going back to the foundation of it all. Exploring wind, mirror, challenges in a different angle. Franklin has opened up a new window for me to explore my journey on the outside, connecting with it inside. Realising that the project gives us more angles on who we are. Meaning that we are making progress the way we make progress within ourselves.
The community has welcomed me with open arms as they saw the initiative behind our project. As I get so much support from them. The past few months we have been to ‘spin offs’, drifting and a lot of events where kids and other mechanics got involved. And it was such a blessing to be part of it all.
We still have a path to walk with our ‘Car Project’ and ourselves but I believe we are where we need to be in the project because there is still a lot more to learn. As we next tackle the interior and exterior.

SA PRISONS: CERTIFICATE CEREMONY WORCESTER PRISON
by Karina Andersen
It is with great JOY in my heart that I congratulate three more graduates Worcester Prison. To graduate the first phase of The Responsible Individual means you have invited a deeper awareness into your experience. It means that you are not looking at outer environment with judgment or blame; you know that what see 'out there' is merely a reflection of lives deep within you. It takes courage to invite these new angles on life and attend ‘old chapters within’ that we are holding onto so tight.
We celebrate and congratulate:
Ebraheem Jacobs: "I am dedicated and live honestly, being trustworthy towards life, sharing my experiences and the quality I have achieved in discovering responsible individual am”
Kurtwell Williams: “In the understanding of myself I tap into my full potential, realising inner wisdom… from that state of awareness I serve and guide myself. For only through serving and guiding myself have I gained a deep understanding of my own inner wisdom and power. This is from where I serve and guide others.”
James Arendse: “In my community I enjoy the change bring and lead by example showing a more positive life with all there is to gain.”
OUR PROJECTS – CHANGE AGENTS IN THE MAKING
12. We also celebrate SmilingOne Change Agent and TRI Facilitator Daniel Davids who has guided the TRI Students throughout 2014. What a privilege to experience your growth Daniel! better way to showcase your skill than allow the graduates share a few words about you:
“Daniel is just amazing. He sensitive when dealing with us. When I am vulnerable due to past hurts and pains that comes up he is compassionate caring. He very considerate when guides me through the challenge. He comforts compassionately and guides me with great wisdom and depth of understanding."
“I have the utmost respect for Daniel’s coaching style because he put sugar and spice in one pot. He let you feel worthy and welcome in his sessions. Daniel approach every situation with baby hands to make you feel comfortable and relax open up towards him. He has a clever way of changing his style because he surprises you with a new angle and in that always learn something new."
“I am once again proud and lucky that have gotten the opportunity in meeting such an excellent coach as Daniel. He has inspired me to discover myself. HIs approach in coaching gave me deep insight to my actions, emotions and challenges."
It is always through ‘the other’ that we truly see’ ourselves. We give thanks for an incredible process at Worcester Prison this year! We have four amazing coaches and change agents in training who impact their environments positively… the three graduates are a wonderful testimony of this… many more to come as we journey on!
HELDERSTROOM QUALITY ASSURANCE PROCESS
We are EXCITED to renew our commitment COC Activation at Helderstroom Prison. It is of great value to pause for a moment review process and renew commitment. This serves both the path of inner development as it serves developing individuals and challenged communities within our prisons. It is important to understand your motivation and have a clear objective. We thank DCS for the partnership and look forward to another exciting year of shaping Change Agents! We have had a strong group highly committed inmates who have journeyed with SmilingOne through 2014. Men who have started to not just speak change but to live it every single day. These are the Change Agents in making!
OUR PRISON PROCESS HAS 7 YEARS ANNIVERSARY IN SOUTH AFRICA
It was a very special November month as we looked back on 7 years active inside SA prisons and the shaping of our COC College for Change Agents. It has been such a beautiful and organic process that has allowed our students to move deeper into their being - ‘the gentle giant’ - who moves from his heart and inspires community to do the same. Each day a new student joins. We listen deeply and allow the unfolding of each process. are committed to passionate about unlocking potential.
We give thanks to every single student who has journeyed with us the past 7 years. Thank you for your commitment to making yourself a priority. In healing you, you heal communities and families.

An Inside View
Pushing Pawns Not Drugs by Marco
90% of all youth between the ages of 18-25 years old admitted to the Worcester Male Correctional Centre was guilty for possession and use of narcotics. Even most house breaking and theft cases are linked to the use of narcotics. When will our youth change their behaviour towards drugs? In a simple answer, when they understand the hazards of the harmful practice of drugs. But there is a difference between knowing something and understanding something.
Too little attention is given to the key of self-education in the early stages of life, like primary school level. Implementing and practicing the gifts of a healthy lifestyle, helping them understand the influences of drugs physically and mentally, involving local and international sport stars to carry forward the message, saying no to substance abuse. For realising that it is possible to live a drug free life without giving up certain aspects of their cultures.
For instance many youth believe in partying, coming together and having a fun time, sharing and being united in our activities. We often want to forget about our challenges, which stretch as far as poverty to peer pressure, domestic violence but to name a few. We need to make use of facilities at hand like sports fields, community centres, including different activities, for us to learn how to have fun constructively.
More time and effort must be invest in our youth to make good choices, starting at an early age. We need the community to spend more time building on such activities. We can not wait for them to enter the Correctional system, our community needs to start now.

Nyanga Youth Development Program

Ivy Nyovane – the principal
A journey of vibrant colours and beauty as the flower possess, for the Principal of the Ivy Nyovane Educare Centre. After 4 years as a TRI student Vuyiswa is now the first female SmilingOne ‘Change Agent’ in the making. As I enter the Ivy Nyovane Educare Centre one of the teachers mentions that Vuyiswa is in the office. To no surprise she jokes that I always catch her with work, not to mention the load of files that is on her desk, while she still has time to smile at a joke.
It has been 5 years that Vuyiswa has been with the Ivy Nyovane Educare Centre and she is enjoying every moment of it. She first volunteered to help with the caring of the kids, where Ivy Nyovane only functioned as a Creche and After Care. Later when they developed into an Educare, she became one of the teachers. With further development she became the Principal and teacher for one of the Grade R classes.
She describes her journey as the Principal, one of many aspects in the process of being a woman. She believes she has still a lot to learn when it comes to administration and day to day running of the Ivy Nyovane Educare Centre. And her notebook comes quite handy in the process of being a principal, where documentation is the key to staying organise, with arrangements of the Centre.
In her own life it has taught her to arrange and list her priorities, to have a place for everything in her life to revisit when needed. She cannot take all the credit for the operations of the Centre when she has such a wonderful team of teachers, along with the Founder of the Ivy Nyovane Educare Centre, the Care Taker and the Security and Maintenance, each playing their special and individual part. For she believe that they are growing because they are a team.
SmilingOne salutes you Vuyiswa for the love and strength – sharing yourself with others – through being a resource and care!

CMD – Central Music Development
by Franklin Esau
Many may ask why I chose the name Central Music District. I was inspired when I listened to my heart (the centre of creating music) to aid others in finding the centre of their music and developing it. Central music District is a project of musical talent and developing it to understanding yourself musically.
In the past three months I have connected deeply with the sounds of music, and those not privilege enough to find out what their talent and passion is worth to them and those who listen to them. As part of my Circle Of Change Activation I am meant to have a Caring project that gives back to the community. I discovered the gift I have by being on the platform of music and inviting others to be part of it. In the community of Elsies River I spread the word and soon two wonderful talents followed – Stanford and Latoya. We have had an amazing experience of walking together and decided to record a song that will capture our community, that we call ‘Chucks’. Soon after with welcoming applause from the community we found another young talent interested to explore her gift. And unlike Stanford and Latoya who are rappers, she is a song bird with an angelic voice that can smooth any message. We recorded a song together called ‘Peace’.
Latoya: To be involved with Franklin in our music and talent is a dream for me. It made me realise that I can be a better person. At first I did not believe that my talent would be noticed. Now I believe that I can be the person I dream about, a rapper.
Stanford: It is exciting to be with CMD working on my skills and it is very fruitful. I definitely enjoy the ride; I would like to get more involved as my work only allows me minimal time.
Robyn: It nice to make something of my talent and I hope to go much further. I am just grateful for the opportunity.
A large extend we want to urge all young folks to explore their talent, giving them an opportunity to find themselves and the light they shine within, creating a platform in communities like Elsies River. Right now, we are shooting two music videos and I hope you are going to love the music.

Montessori
We have been excited for so many months now looking forward to our graduation and it was lovely. Me and Ma Esther is so happy that we could pass as Montessori teachers and further equip in the process as Educators at Ivy Nyovane Educare Centre.
Our workshop this month was creative with colourful sharing. It helped me understand relationships with new people I have met. There were many challenges on the road and for me it was mainly computer class but I managed to pull through. For Ma Esther it was a huge challenge to manage her time now that she is studying at Montessori, so she is grateful for her team of teachers at Ivy Nyovane who helped her managing her time.
Now that we have seen the progress and learning in the Montessori classes we are setting new goals to further our education in uplifting ourselves to give more to Ivy Nyovane Educare. Thank you to SmilingOne for helping us achieving this goal. It made us better teachers to give better service to the community.

18. SMILE FOR THE CAMERA – Capturing the Change Agents
By Rox Dalton
Last year, as a part of my Masters Degree in Documentary Arts at the University of Cape Town, I made a short film that led me into prisons. This year we were tasked with creating a much longer format documentary and due to the overwhelmingly positive response we got from the first film, I decided to expand on the short film and make a film that explored much more in detail the topic of the rehabilitation of an inmate.
An aspect I didn’t explore in the short film was what happened to an inmate who according to the systems in place was classified as ‘successfully rehabilitated’ and was released back into society. This led me to the SmilingOne Foundation and two unique individuals who are SmilingOne Change Agents, Malcolm and Franklin. I met them together with the founder of the organization: Karina Anderson. Our first meeting took place in front of the fire of Karina’s lounge where we discussed everything from rehabilitation to filmmaking. I knew quite soon into our conversation that I would love to incorporate these two fascinating people into my documentary. By focusing on their lives and the programmes they are involved in as a part of their circles of change, a concept carried by SmilingOne Change Agents, I hope to explore the power of rehabilitation and confront the judgments we as a society often place on anyone with a criminal record.
The journey so far has allowed me and my crew the chance to meet many more remarkable characters and has allowed us a glimpse into worlds and sub- cultures we would otherwise never get a chance to meet. Through Malcolm, we met Ocean View and the group he runs that fixes old beetles. Malcolm comes alive when he talks about cars and his passion clearly inspires the group he works worth it. We are all excited to capture the final spraying of the beetle they have been working hard on. Franklin introduced us to Elsies hip hop, ball room dancing Langa and a unique crèche in Nyanga, that is about to step out from the financial assistance Smiling One has provided and begin to generate their own income using the tools they have learned thus far. Our crew is looking forward to capturing the process as they build a small shop on the premises at the end of this week.
Along with his musical ability, Franklin is always a source of inspiration and his positivity is contagious. He shares his life with a sense of honesty and authenticity that creates a space for those he interacts with to do the same. He also always has time to laugh and enjoy the company he is with which means he is a constant reminder that life should be a celebration.
Malcolm is responsible for inspiring one of the key themes of the documentary which is “leaving your mark”. When he was explaining the spinning culture in Ocean View and how spinning or drifting can be a physical way of leaving your mark on a place, I realized that the change agents such as Malcolm and Franklin are also leaving their mark on the communities they engage with. Their presence uplifts and inspires positive change and creates spaces for those around them to learn from them and join them as they collect more puzzle pieces for the puzzle of hope and healing both appear to be building. My only hope is that this documentary can capture a small part of their journey and inspire others to leave their own marks in ways that can uplift those around them as well.
Thank you Malcolm, Franklin & Karina for allowing us a chance to follow your journey over the last few months!
Lots of love, Rox, Mike & Des

Quantum Warrior – The Future Of The Mind
In many of our human journeys we hold significant gratitude to our thoughts and the ability of the mind to endure or focus. With scientific discoveries and complex methodology we discover that this month’s book is one for complexity and innovative processing, made simpler to understand exactly the ability and power of the mind together with our human journey. The SmilingOne Foundation guides leaders through a simple form of attending to one-self, unlocking a potential that not only aid in self-discovery but also creating a self-identity.
When I started reading the Quantum Warrior - The Future Of The Mind, written by John Kehoe – I saw an attendance to discover the locked potential of the mind. Using vast scientific jargons and highly religious terms I must say had me thinking that it is a book for the tertiary community who chooses the field of Cognitive Science. Surprisingly, is it explained in detail and conveyed in simpler form. Aiding in discovering more of one-self on a conscious understanding.
In so I continue my attendance of self-discovery to understand more and open myself to learning about my journey. Let us welcome the teachings of life and share ourselves with each other. FUTURE PROJECTS AND EVENTS
