The year of 2017/18 is our 10th year in loving action and deeply committed contribution to making a difference in our beloved South Africa. It is a milestone! We pause and reflect on the wonderful achievements of our fellow TRI students who have embraced personal values-based leadership and live to be an example. Their success is our success. In true Ubuntu Spirit there is not one without the other!
THE CHANGE AGENT…
this is how we address crime in South Africa.
I am deeply humbled as I witness incredible courage amongst our students. We meet them in some of the toughest environments and extend to them the invite of change. Let us not underestimate what this means! It is for each student a complete rebuild of what he or she knows. It is a daily challenge of meeting and shifting the old energy and choosing a different approach.
You will in our annual report meet these courageous beings and witness what they do with a changed mindset; a mindset that no longer violates or perpetrates; a mindset that cares deeply to restore and heal , to nurture, inspire and to contribute. They have joined the heartbeat of transformation and play a significant role in guiding our SA youth and communities towards a greater future!
May you enjoy our Annual Report

My heart continues to be moved deeply by our Change Agent work. We have completed another year - our 9th - of bringing C.O.C. Education to some of the most challenged environments in our Society. I am in AWE of the results we are experiencing; so
many 'seeds' are sprouting and watering other 'seeds' in the process. An awakened individual understands that he/she has so many more options than choosing a life of crime and destruction. I see so much potential; the fire is burning in me/us to do so
much more.
I am aware that we would have achieved nothing without the incredible commitment of men and women who dedicated themselves wholeheartedly to this path. We know that it is not an easy one! My gratitude goes to each of you for having had the courage to choose YOU, for investing in becoming your best version. Life tests us over and over again so that we may purify our intentions and strip off all the layers of past limitations. Consciousness is a daily GYM. There is nothing more attractive than someone who radiates values-based leadership and generously shares of their awakening. This is the true Magic of a Change Agent.

As I journey with our Change Agents through their Circles of Change (COC) I wake more and more up to this inspiring quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson. When each of us live into our Golden Thread and follow its calling, Magic takes place! Each project that we have been so lucky to witness and gently guide in our Change Agent work this year inspires to move beyond what we think we know and open ourselves to the grand adventure! I am deeply grateful for a year that has emptied me and opened me further. Only when we can be fully present with ‘the other’ can we deeply honour their journey and its unfolding. Here at SmilingOne we are curious about the puzzle piece that each of our Students are in our greater puzzle - their unique contribution. We walk hand in hand, we spin the COC Engine inwardly and outwardly, we shape and co-create inspiring projects that heal and inspire youth, families and communities.
Our annual report is a testimony of how each Change Agent leaves a trail as they are drawn by the inner pull towards their purpose - embracing the share they own in the well-being of our Society!

We proudly present to you our Annual Report 2019/20.
FOREWORD BY OUR FOUNDER:
TOGETHERNESS is a big theme as I reflect upon the year - it is a journey of remembering that we achieve absolutely nothing on our own AND that we are not on our own. We must be willing to tear down the walls we have built to protect ourselves, to shed the old energy and allow curiosity to take us into new, exciting, collaborative and co-creative spaces. When we take the risk to open ourselves to the GRAND ADVENTURE we begin to experience how similar we all are - we awaken to the spirit of UBUNTU - I AM because WE ARE - and we extend ourselves into this beautiful shared experience.
We meet most of our beneficiaries at a crossroad, between the dark and the light, at the far edges of their experience. We extend an invitation to them - a call to adventure - to take the leap, to step onto our life-changing platform and Awaken the Leader within. It is such a humbling experience to walk the journey next to them as they transform from deep within… UNLEASHING GREATNESS.
ALL IT TAKES IS A MOMENT TO TAKE OFF ON THE RIGHT PATH….
Welcome to our Annual Report 2019/20 - I am so glad you are here ♥︎
May you enjoy our year in words and pictures. And may you feel inspired to join us in our vision… as a Shareholder in the Well-Being of our Society.
with Love, Karina
It is a privilege to present our annual report to you. We have had another incredible year of Change Agent Magic - contributing our special puzzle piece to crime prevention and diversion in our beautiful South Africa.
It moves my soul to experience how those we journey with allow themselves the experience of awakening to more of themselves and a deeper sense of purpose. I often say to our students:
>>Do not underestimate the ripple of your awakening<<
We experience its heartwarming impact on how we live and (un)learn together. A living and (un)learning that is authentic and kind… that is generous… that is honest and transparent… that stretches and encourages… that heals our wounds and edits our old stories. It is a living and (un)learning that allows the student their own unique path… also the tough patches! There is nothing more liberating than >>walking the plank<< of a perception!
Come with me. Experience the unique unfolding of a Change Agent Journey. Students awakening to their inner coach, healer and guide and firing up their entrepreneurial spirit all while assisting and guiding others to do the same.
In Gratitude

We are delighted to share our Annual Report 2012/13 with our network.
Foreword by SmilingOne Founder:
As a 16-year-old member of the Thug Life gang puts it, “gang life is like a religion to my family. My father and grandfather were in gangs and they have done time in jail – I will probably end up there as well. It is the way of life here; it is where you learn about respect and get status.”
Our year has been one of fine tuning our approach, merging deeper into the resource we are and walking each step true to our hearts. We are all shareholders in the wellbeing of our society – the SmilingOne Team takes this responsibility very seriously and we know how important our puzzle piece is!
What touches me deeply is that 9 million children (48%) are growing up with absent but living fathers! 3.3 million young people are not in education, training or employment. And as of March 2012: 32% of all inmates in SA prisons were under the age of 25. I experience youth in dire need of inspiration and direction!
We have harvested incredible results from our five years pro-active research! It has proven to us that a very effective way to prevent/divert our youth and youngsters from pursuing the path of crime is to shape positive Role Models who meet the youth at risk where they are at and inspire/guide them towards a different path. This is what the SmilingOne Team is deeply passionate about and invest in. We find and educate these potential Change Agents in some of the most challenged SA environments...
MORE IN THE REPORT!
FOREWORD by Karina Andersen, Founder
I am humbled by a year of incredible growth.
We have opened so many new and exciting doors and partnered with like-minded souls who deeply connect to our passion and our purpose. These partnerships have allowed us to extend ourselves even further and gift especially South African youth-at-risk with our enabling platform, a TRI toolkit and our SmilingOne Change Agents!
2018/19 has allowed for years of deeply focused Change Agent work to move to the next level! I love how the journey guides us. It keeps revealing the steps to take. At times we are called to pause and at other times we are called to stretch. It has been a year of huge stretch. It continues to ask for more and that we bow to the process. Only when we bow can we open our hearts and minds to purify our intent. We are here to SERVE a much greater purpose than ourselves. We want to cause ripples of change which will echo in the hearts and minds of those we touch. We want to leave a lasting footprint and be woven into the tapestry of lives transformed forever. Just like nature every single process is connected. WE are all connected! There is a greater rhythm to honour - a grand symphony. My task is to keep us honest and aligned to this wonderful balance which begins with how we as a SmilingOne Team live and practice our own consciousness toolkit, grounding ourselves firmly, moving from our deepest essence.
I am thrilled to share our annual report with you and invite you to celebrate with us the wonderful progress…

It can be a big wow when you slow down from the business of everyday life, and you observe where you are coming from and where you going to.
The past year has been one of those wow moments when the end of another year arrived in a surprisingly exciting form, when we realise that we are having so much fun and the diary has almost no days left. As the magic of development and beauty graced us till the very last of the month.
We have celebrated our ‘Change Agents’ in the making graduating in Malmesbury and Worcester Prison, our Ivy Nyovane Teachers graduating their Montessori Training; We have been incredibly blessed with both our ‘Parole Portfolio’ where you wil meet Monwabisi Mbetane, who graces his community with ballroom dancing lessons as part of his COC Activation and further development at Ivy Nyovane Educare Centre. You will also find our outreach for lovely musical talent in the community of Elsies River.

Letter from the CEO:
As I write my inspiration to you today I am reflecting on the seeds we plant in this very special garden of life.
One of our TRI Students in Helderstroom Prison shared with me recently how he is harvesting the fruits of those very early deposits he made in his life, seeds planted with fear and limitation. He is waking up in the middle of his own creation and deeply impacted by its ripple effect. He is shaken. With different tools he is now expanding on his garden, understanding that he is a puzzle piece in a bigger puzzle - we are all connected and each seed has impact. Today he is conscious about sowing seeds with love, care and understanding. And yes, the old trees are still standing as reminders of deep and valuable learning processes - he embraces those with great humility. It has allowed him an understanding as he has healed and a bridge to those who still sow with fear and live in darkness. He is reaching them with his light. He is a Change Agent in the making!
These processes are touching my heart daily... when we begin to live our light beingness and touch those around us. This is why we are here... to unlock an incredible potential.
Let us be curious about the seeds we plant. Let us understand. Let us share our LIGHT
MISSION
We serve as an innovative platform, to practice C.O.C and skills development.

Malcolm Booysen is one of our dear and trusted team members in our SmilingOne Family - a Change Agent - I have personally worked with him the past 4+ years. Energy, determination, growth mindset, passion and the most gentle Heart is just a few of the many many wonderful attributes of Malcolm. He has a strong facilitation toolbox and always keen to expand as the eternal Student he is.
As we don't have funding/sponsors at the moment to pay Malcolm enough to sustain himself fully we are kindly asking our network if you maybe are keen to sponsor him via SmilingOne to work with the youth in his community in Ocean View, Cape Town. Malcolm has prepared this presentation for you...
What a truly special 2013 we have had!
I am touched by the many opportunities given to us to facilitate change in our challenged communities in South Africa, I experience so much love, so much joy and a deep connectedness. I am grateful for a very special team of Change Agents that selflessly reach out to touch and teach, simply because they know deep within what it means to both laugh and cry, to rise and fall and experience life in and through its seasons. What makes the difference is the understanding of that each season has its own teaching and once we tap fully into the lessons it comes with we can taste the sweetness of its fruit - deep within us - and we can trust that nothing is there without a reason.
2013 has reminded me of meeting in our shared humanity and that we are not here to do it on our own. Let us travel together! BE together. Nelson Mandela and his legacy inspires this in us - to keep living true to our hearts, that inner deep calling, voices that truly cares, voices that heal and reach out to each other, voices that builds a healthy nation on equality and love. And as we say our goodbye to one of the greatest leaders of our time we also embrace the opportunity to fuel each of our steps with greater awareness and a much broader "WE Consciousness".
May you enjoy our newsletter and tune into the energy of an inspiring season in our SmilingOne Foundation.
We look forward to share much more with you in 2014.
Happy New Year!

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

We have done it ourselves.
3. The year of 2017/18 is our 10th year in loving action and deeply committed contribution to making a difference in our beloved South Africa. It is

4. OUR VISION
IN ACTION…
1. We facilitate CIRCLES OF CHANGE (COC) in highly challenged South African
communities establishing a foundation for development with our personal values-
based leadership program: THE RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUAL (TRI).
2. We educate CHANGE AGENTS who facilitate dynamic COC processes within
their communities which include: prisons, families, schools, youth at risk, businesses
and organisations – in society at large.
3. Our CHANGE AGENTS are ROLE MODELS who also assist the important phase of
re-integration, reducing the recidivism rate by helping parolees to build the bridge
back into society, back home into their families and communities.
4. We are an EMPOWERMENT ARM for our beneficiaries, their families and
communities. We do not do it for them. We do it with them. ”Give a man a fish and you
feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” The COC
empowers the entrepreneurial journey of each student towards sustainable livelihood,
operating in an abundant exchange.
5. We strongly believe in SUSTAINABILITY and that everything brought to a
community must be able to stay and be nurtured within the community for continuous
learning and growth.

The purpose of our Annual Report is to highlight our achievements for the year. However, only once we understand the depth of the work
can we appreciate what has been achieved. We have to see beneath the surface and ask ourselves ‘What is the source of these
challenges’? Do we recognise the deeper wounding? We cannot address the challenge if we are not addressing the wound!
1) We recognise THE WOUNDED
2) We fully live into our Mission Statement of inspiring Personal Values-based Leadership and equipping the
wounded for his/her own awakening.

10. OUR PARTNERSHIPS | GROWTH
THE DG MURRAY TRUST | LRMG | WITS DIGITAL CAMPUS
We give thanks to DGMT for the support
and for allowing us the opportunity to
deepen our work throughout the year.
We have thoroughly enjoyed our in-depth
engagements with DGMT Innovation
Manager Senzo Hlophe whom we
reported to. We were deeply humbled by
the time, energy and interest he invested
in us as we fine-tuned our reports and
communicated with even greater clarity.
We give thanks to LRMG for being a
treasured partner as well as an incredible
platform of learning and growth for our
Founder. The exposure and deep
engagements in the world of business
enriches her thinking and allows her to
deepen TRI’s multi lingual capability.
COC Education and each Change Agent
benefits hugely from this.
We give thanks to the Wits Digital Campus & Team (powered by LRMG) for sponsoring an inspiring
online learning experience - Principles of Project Management - for one of our Change Agents.
Franklin has strengthened his toolbox and fine-tuned his approach as a Project Manager of several
projects. This benefits our beneficiaries hugely.
Without partnerships we are nothing…
Progress is a joint venture!
11. OUR PARTNERSHIPS | GROWTH
DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONAL SERVICES (DCS) | RUC | DANISH EMBASSY
We give thanks to RUC who has been a treasured partner the past six years.
We enjoy bringing our LIVE reports to the congregation and share of our work; we appreciate
the many wonderful connections, the generous donations and the invites for our Change
Agents to contribute in many more ways; one example would be inviting Phumzile to cook at
your annual fundraiser. Thank you for enriching our experience!
Thank you for providing growth opportunity !
We give thanks to DCS for our special partnership
these past 10 years! Our growth has only been
possible because we have walked hand in hand with
the prisons who have embraced our service delivery.
Eight prisons in total since 2008:
Brandvlei Maximum 2008 - 2013
Brandvlei Medium & Juvenile 2010 - 2012
Goodwood Prison 2009 - 2012
Worcester Medium 2009-2016
Helderstroom Prison 2013-2015
Malmesbury Prison since 2013 (active)
Pollsmoor Prison 2012 (1 year)
reactivated in 2017 (active)
We give thanks to The Royal Danish Embassy for
opening your hearts to us in partnership and
bringing danish business people to our projects.
This has benefitted us in multiple ways - it opens
opportunity for our beneficiaries for further support,
it becomes a further avenue for us to build
partnership and attract funding and it allows us to
inspire projects abroad. We have had several
engagements with inspiring minds who are
intrigued by our approach. Each engagement, each
opportunity contributes to our growth.
12. OUR PARTNERSHIPS | GROWTH
DR. PAUL ABRAMOWITZ (SEX THERAPIST | PHD IN WESTERN HUMAN SEXOLOGY)
We give thanks to Dr. Paul Abramowitz for spending
two separate days with our group inside Malmesbury
Prison, facilitating a sacred space for the men,
offering a deeper exploration into what it means to
bring consciousness into sexual expression and the
cost of unconscious behaviour. The two days offered
tremendous growth both to the inmates active in their
TRI journeys as well as to our Change Agents who
were given some additional lanes on their facilitation
highways. Also a heartfelt thank you for the
workbooks for the men, Paul!
We give thanks to UCT Barbara Schmid as well as
Department of Social Development Senior Lecturer
Somaya Abdullah for the opportunity to join hands in
partnership around Social Worker Sibonisiwe P.
Pamburayi’s internship with our Foundation.

2002 Catalyst: Our Founder Karina, originally from Denmark tragically looses her partner, the father
of her children in a car crash. A much deeper journey calls her. She experiences the importance of
‘depth work’ and its profound impact in facilitating behavioural shifts. In 2005 she registers the
SmilingOne Domain, it is a symbol of her own gradual shift and the intention to impact shifts in
others.
November 2006 Karina immigrates to South Africa. In ‘her suitcase’ she brings her own healing and
development journey. She embarks on the writing of her book The Responsible Individual (TRI)
and activates the first coaches in a coach training she is developing. She is looking for a community
project as part of the coach educational training for students to deepen their COC2 caring practice.
It is October 26th 2007. Karina connects with Jacobus Pansegrouw, a social worker from Brandvlei
Maximum Prison at a business breakfast in Cape Town. He invites her to meet a group of prisoners -
the Group of Hope - a week later. November 1st 2007 marks the one year anniversary of Karina
arriving in South Africa. This is the day she arrives at Brandvlei Prison. 16 inmates courageously
chooses to walk the journey with her and her student coach team. They officially begin sessions
January 2008.
Developing the TRI coaching methodology & COC Education has been an important ingredient in
Karina’s own awakening to the resource she is. She is intentional about her own inner work and about
her contribution in our world. She gives credit to each puzzle piece on her journey. TRI & COC has
come ALIVE in the prison process and with each student who has had the courage to invite a
new way of thinking and being into their lives.

Those who are ready to commit and are intentional about their development
journey actively participate on our enabling platform provided by our Change
Agents in COC Education. It is a very deep space. Many stay in TRI1 for at least a
year to establish the foundation. TRI2 is almost like a Master Degree and
requires extraordinary commitment and discipline from the Student as well as
from the Facilitator Team. Those who have embarked on the TRI2 journey have
taken a minimum of 2 years to complete their studies, some even more.
TRI1 & TRI2 completion qualifies a student for full COC Activation.
E X P O S E
Very often the idea of profound change must be visited multiple times before
we are able to commit. This is why we bring TRI EXPOSURE to the prison
environment where the possibility can be visited in a safe environment.
Karina shares: “Luyanda was exposed to TRI in the early days in Brandvlei Prison.
He did not graduate TRI. He approached me end of 2016 in Worcester Prison
and thanked me for the seeds that had been planted in him while he visited the
idea of change on the TRI enabling platform. He had taken up his studies and
was committed to a life of learning and growth.”
18. However in the years with the SmilingOne Coaches such as Mr Skoji and my Trainer Karina
Andersen inspired me to value life. They availed themselves as Students and Explorers of life.
Their characteristics caught my heartbeat, true travel companions who gave me the gift of
unconditional love as I discovered more of myself and my unique abilities, my unique potential.
I opted to undertake the training path as a Student Coach [COC Education with SmilingOne]. A
seed was planted in my life, as a blessing [at first] unnoticed. I embraced it with everything I had
and today I am proud to be a puzzle piece of inspiration and change to my peers. I am very
passionate about giving back to my peers. I enjoy being challenged by them. I learn from them. I
love bringing the idea of TRI to the world.
As I re-integrate back into society this year I would like to avail my assistance in SmilingOne
Projects for Youth development, Community building, Prison processes (reintegration prior
release) as well as Support for family members of inmates as well as victims
I am an Explorer of Life and a dedicated life-long student. I trust fully in my values and in
my ability to spread love, care and facilitate change. I open windows of opportunity as a
Travel Companion and as a Guide to others. I always remain a student.
When there is understanding and a set of values that encourages sharing, then the
limitations, the needs and our perceived lacks can be acknowledged and effort can be put
into using our values to appreciate life more. I have learned that when we ‘wake up’ to our
human experience on this planet we stop running away, we stop building walls in and
around our heads; instead we actively develop a deeper, wiser and more fulfilling
motivation for our lives.
I have spent almost a decade being
a family member of SmilingOne. It
has been incredibly challenging,
fun and adventurous; an eye
opener, especially in prison. A
remarkable journey of depth, risks
and learning that brings you to the
core of your existence.
On this path of self discovery I have
fallen, been shaken and hurt so
many times. The fear of falling
overwhelmed me so much that it
would have been easier to stay
lying down; always feeling and
assuming that no one cares which
felt to be true initially because I did
not care nor love myself and for too
long I deprived myself of the gift of
self love, self trust and self care.

Phumzile shares: “SA prisons host some of the greatest talents and potential in our country; it is a place
where people get to wake up because sometimes it is only when we are in the deepest of waters that we
realise the gift of being on the surface. When we are awake we know how to appreciate this; not to drown,
to float. It means we connect with our core being and what we are here to achieve - our goals - our purpose.
The SmilingOne Prison process has taught me more about myself and made me aware of my environment.
It has taught me to be aware of the environment of other people and where they come from. Touching the
inmates with TRI makes me feel wonderful because I am doing something good for the people and for the
community. It plays a big role in the man I am today, a man who’s life is a platform of learning for others.
The prisons are in great need of TRI, not just in Pollsmoor but in all our prisons. They are in need of ambassadors for change. It is all about
contributing to the wellbeing of others. By guiding someone to understand, to honour his/her values and to embrace challenges is like saving
someone’s life. They begin to give their life meaning and to live out their potential. They begin to feel human again.
I would like to share a story of one of the
guys I met inside Pollsmoor Prison in
December 2017 while he was awaiting
trial. This is Siya. Upon his release he
immediately contacted me. We have
started a process in his location in Nyanga.
We are three months into the project. I go
there once a week…
Siya first brought one person to our sessions, then he inspired another 15 youth to join us. Life is not just about one individual, it is really
about all of us. TRI gives meaning to everyone and contributes to our growth. It helps us move towards meaningful activities in our lives.”

“I AM PROUD TO PLAY THIS SIGNIFICANT ROLE OF BEING A SMILING ONE
CHANGE AGENT, PROVIDING AN ENABLING PLATFORM FOR CHANGE.
• I remember that my first session with Wynberg High School Students brought tears
as we in our sharing spaces uncovered the unfairness, the judgment and the
bullying they were experiencing; it came to light that many of the Students were
struggling with understanding Self and others.
• In Mount View High School situated in the notorious neighbourhood of Hanover
Park, Students were traumatised by violence. Alcohol and drug abuse was a daily
invite, many of them were victims of crime. Their trust, self belief and optimism had
been broken so many times.
• Bishop Lavis High School Students were targeted by gangsterism and drugs, a
constant negative influence impacting their future.
• St. Andrews Secondary School in the community of Elsies River was also
surrounded by gangsterism and influenced by drugs. Youth were targeted to join
gangs and young woman were forced to engage in criminal activities.
• Michausdal Senior Secondary School in Cradock is listed as a high drop-out
School; here you will find abusive behaviour amongst and directed at Youth which
sees many of the Students not completing School.
• J A Calata Secondary School are faced with a high teenage pregnancy rate and are
constantly dealing with drop-outs due to drugs and alcohol abuse from the Youth
alongside abusive and violent activities in the community.

My past was full of anxiety - always
nervous. During examination I would
get real anxious and often stress
about small things.
I still stress about things but I am
handling it in a different way. It is not
about not being nervous, it is the
ability to not sound nervous. If I am
overwhelmed with nervousness it will
not give me an opportunity to handle
things with more clarity.
I would love to help other teenagers
also discover what is inside of them
which can help them to cope with
the anxiety - they often don’t have
ways and means to deal with the
anxiety.
I have learnt that I can be in control of
my emotions by allowing myself to
feel and be honest with the way I feel
- I am responsible for my actions.
I AM LEARNING TO NOT SELL
MYSELF SHORT TO THE TALENT I
HAVE - I AM LEARNING TO SOUND
LESS NERVOUS.
My past was very hurtful. I
always wondered why things
like that has happened to me. I
see now that things will happen
but the importance is how I
react to it and handle it.
I was in a dark space and did
very hurtful things to myself in
order to deal with my pain and
hurt – as a teenager I felt that I
had no other options. With
time in the sessions I have
started to understand that
there are options in ways you
can handle your challenges.
I used to be very shy, my
confidence was low - my
biggest challenge was trust. I
am starting to trust myself more
as I am learning about myself.
I AM LEARNING TO NEVER
GIVE UP ON MYSELF & TO
SPEAK UP. I AM LEARNING
THAT I AM SPECIAL.
I have done a lot of things to disappoint my
parents and I have not been attending many
things to elevate me into being a better
person. Joining the process was going to help
me find perspective and give me focus.
In my past I did not have a care for things and
I was not stable in what I wanted to do – even
at school I was not giving my hundred
percent. I lacked focus. I did most things just
to please others.
I am still figuring out what I want to do and
who I want to be. I understand now that
school is a priority and it needs more focus -
also to handle my challenges day by day.
I have learnt that we all play our role to make
things come alive and we have a
responsibility towards our role and the
people we are living with – whether in our
community or at home. Being the oldest made
me feel I had a responsibility - finally I
understand what that responsibility means.
I AM LEARNING TO NOT CLASH WITH
OTHERS AND NOT FORCE MY WAY - I AM
MATURING - I AM HAVING LESS
ARGUMENTS - I AM LEARNING TO TAP
INTO OPPORTUNITY.

social worker perspective. It was a
wonderful exchange.
One-on-one sessions were provided either in person or via Skype
for depth coaching sessions as well as follow up on projects. We
worked closely on our project delivery. We value learning - each
moment provides us with classrooms. As we open the door to
2018/19 we show up with our ready-to-learn mindset.

30. We entered into an internship with Pamburayi as part of her studies as a
qualified Social Worker specialising in Probation and Correctional
Practice. The agreement was signed between UCT, Pamburayi and
SmilingOne. We committed to give her exposure to our projects inside
prison, in schools and in Khayelitsha, to our COC educational trainings
offered to our Change Agents and to our governance processes for an
in-depth understanding of how we run our NPO. It was really special to
experience our work and processes through her eyes. We deeply
enjoyed her feedback and her interest in making a contribution.
GRADUATION CEREMONY: Once a year in each prison process we celebrate
the remarkable journeys of change, the courage it takes to commit fully and be
intentional about change. We give thanks for the incredible opportunity of
journeying alongside each other. In 2017 we exposed our TRI students from
Mount View High School to the TRI students in our prison process. The
experience was enriching for everyone - the students and the inmates.
OBJECTIVE 2018/19: We continue to build bridges between our projects to
offer our students exposure and platforms that enable progress in their lives.

OBJECTIVE 2018/19: We aim to expand our partnership with UCT and are open to more such experiences in
the future. This could help us with in-depth research in our project areas and profiling of our beneficiaries.
31. PAROLEE SUPPORT: We are committed to walk an extra mile for our COC students
whom we have journeyed with inside prison, who have shown commitment and been
intentional about their change. We welcomed home Thando Gwampi and Marco
Simons. We are over the moon with excitement and we are looking forward to partner
with them on their re-integration path. Thando is an artist, a poet and an entrepreneur
by heart. Marco loves sports and has already found work in a fitness centre.
We have the past year journeyed deeply with 8 Parolees/Families. Our aim in 2018/19
is to strengthen our networking platform and inviting more people and businesses to
offer opportunities to these men (indirectly impacts their families positively).
NETWORKING: We have attended stakeholder
meetings at Pollsmoor Prison. We understand the
importance of nurturing our relationships within DCS
and to be aligned to our partners thinking. This allows
us to offer the best possible service and to do what we
do best!

32. NETWORKING: We hosted a group of danish business
people in Franklin’s CMD youth project at Mount View High
School. They were referred to us by the Royal Danish
Embassy. It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase our
Change Agent work and to invite partnerships. Franklin did
a superb job. It has opened the door to conversations
around our approach and how it can benefit projects
abroad. We aim to continue to build partnerships and invite
more people to visit our projects.

TRAINING | CELEBRATION: Caroline
is a wonderful addition to our team
and helps us by keeping our spaces
clean. This allows for wonderful
energy to flow through our work
zones. She has been exposed to
SmilingOne for two years now and is
ready to step onto our enabling
platform. This is a huge achievement
as it takes commitment to begin to
take charge of her growth path.
Cleaning is not her passion however
she has been willing to take it on to
earn a living and provide for her two
children. She will now start a
guidance process and begin a day
school program to learn new skills
that will take her towards her
passion. Watch this space!

35. We are proud of what our activated Change
Agents have achieved this year with very little
funds. They have tightened their belts but
certainly not the quality of their service delivery.
They were instrumental in opening the door to
the DG Murray Trust where we received a grant
of R100,000 in the beginning of our financial
year. The amount might look insignificant to
some but to us it is a door that has opened to
an exciting partnership, one that we have been
committed to nurture and build upon as we
have showcased the deepest essence of our
work. We have found in this new partnership
incredible learning and growth opportunity and
the engagements over the year provided us
with a platform to simplify and clarify. Senzo
Hlophe, DGMT Innovation Manager has been
such a gift to us - his time, his curiosity and his
energy investment turned our reports into fun
learning experiences. Thank you for seeking to
understand Senzo - our thinking is refreshed.

We put out several other funding proposals that did not carry fruit
however our efforts in the fundraising arena could have been much
greater. We lack capacity and are in great need of an extension to our
team that can focus on raising funds for our foundation. This will be a
key focus in the new year as we would like to activate more Change
Agents and want to (MUST) reward them fairly. Their contribution to our
society is of utmost importance, they dig where only few can dig, they
take learning and development to a whole new level. With an expansive
toolkit they hold such an important key to address crime and other ills
in our society - they understand deeply what this job entails.
Some of the routes we would to take towards sustainability is to:
- invite more board members who have extensive networks, who
understand the long-term strategy in the field of our work (crime
diversion, crime prevention, social cohesion) and who are keen to
assist us in our expansion.
- Invite our existing network to assist us in fundraising, openly ask for
support and continue to highlight the significance of our work. After
10 years we have built substantial evidence to support this.
2018 feels like a year of break through!
37.
AS A BOARD we are accountable for our standard of governance and therefore highly
committed to ensure that we deliver what we promise. It begins with how we live our
SmilingOne Dream, walking the talk and fuelling these values into building a strong and
sustainable organisation.
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT POLICY - the SmilingOne Foundations financial management is
done in terms of the South African Auditing Standards and audited financial statements are
available. Our external auditor HG Page (Company Practice No 964700) provide oversight and
monitoring.
QUALITY MANAGEMENT is integrated into the SmilingOne Foundations management system.
Project monitoring and evaluation is part of our total Quality Management Policy.
OUR CHANGE AGENT COMMITTEE is tasked with monitoring of all our COC projects. Each
project undergoes monthly quality assurance through comprehensive COC feedback reports
from the project as well an evaluation by the Chair of the Committee.
