It is a privilege to present our annual report to you. We have had another incredible year of Change Agent Magic - contributing our special puzzle piece to crime prevention and diversion in our beautiful South Africa.
It moves my soul to experience how those we journey with allow themselves the experience of awakening to more of themselves and a deeper sense of purpose. I often say to our students:
>>Do not underestimate the ripple of your awakening<<
We experience its heartwarming impact on how we live and (un)learn together. A living and (un)learning that is authentic and kind… that is generous… that is honest and transparent… that stretches and encourages… that heals our wounds and edits our old stories. It is a living and (un)learning that allows the student their own unique path… also the tough patches! There is nothing more liberating than >>walking the plank<< of a perception!
Come with me. Experience the unique unfolding of a Change Agent Journey. Students awakening to their inner coach, healer and guide and firing up their entrepreneurial spirit all while assisting and guiding others to do the same.

Letter from Franklin’s desk
It can be a big wow when you slow down from the business of everyday life, and you observe where you are coming from and where you going to.
The past year has been one of those wow moments when the end of another year arrived in a surprisingly exciting form, when we realise that we are having so much fun and the diary has almost no days left. As the magic of development and beauty graced us till the very last of the month.
We have celebrated our ‘Change Agents’ in the making graduating in Malmesbury and Worcester Prison, our Ivy Nyovane Teachers graduating their Montessori Training; We have been incredibly blessed with both our ‘Parole Portfolio’ where you wil meet Monwabisi Mbetane, who graces his community with ballroom dancing lessons as part of his COC Activation and further development at Ivy Nyovane Educare Centre. You will also find our outreach for lovely musical talent in the community of Elsies River.
So join us as we say farewell to 2014, with hugs and warm wishes as we spend quality time with our families during the festive season, discovering new horizons to inspire us for a new year.
Enjoy Turqouise – the December edition for 2014.
Happy holidays from the desk!

FOREWORD by Founder Karina Andersen
“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is not path and leave a trail”
As I journey with our Change Agents through their Circles of Change (COC) I wake more and more up to this inspiring quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson. When each of us live into our Golden Thread and follow its calling, Magic takes place! Each project that we have been so lucky to witness and gently guide in our Change Agent work this year inspires to move beyond what we think we know and open ourselves to the grand adventure! I am deeply grateful for a year that has emptied me and opened me further. Only when we can be fully present with ‘the other’ can we deeply honour their journey and its unfolding. Here at SmilingOne we are curious about the puzzle piece that each of our Students are in our greater puzzle - their unique contribution. We walk hand in hand, we spin the COC Engine inwardly and outwardly, we shape and co-create inspiring projects that heal and inspire youth, families and communities.
Our annual report is a testimony of how each Change Agent leaves a trail as they are drawn by the inner pull towards their purpose - embracing the share they own in the well-being of our Society!
THANK YOU FOR VISITING AND LISTENING ♥ KARINA
We are delighted to share our Annual Report 2012/13 with our network.
Foreword by SmilingOne Founder:
As a 16-year-old member of the Thug Life gang puts it, “gang life is like a religion to my family. My father and grandfather were in gangs and they have done time in jail – I will probably end up there as well. It is the way of life here; it is where you learn about respect and get status.”
Our year has been one of fine tuning our approach, merging deeper into the resource we are and walking each step true to our hearts. We are all shareholders in the wellbeing of our society – the SmilingOne Team takes this responsibility very seriously and we know how important our puzzle piece is!
What touches me deeply is that 9 million children (48%) are growing up with absent but living fathers! 3.3 million young people are not in education, training or employment. And as of March 2012: 32% of all inmates in SA prisons were under the age of 25. I experience youth in dire need of inspiration and direction!
We have harvested incredible results from our five years pro-active research! It has proven to us that a very effective way to prevent/divert our youth and youngsters from pursuing the path of crime is to shape positive Role Models who meet the youth at risk where they are at and inspire/guide them towards a different path. This is what the SmilingOne Team is deeply passionate about and invest in. We find and educate these potential Change Agents in some of the most challenged SA environments...
MORE IN THE REPORT!
We proudly present to you our Annual Report 2019/20.
FOREWORD BY OUR FOUNDER:
TOGETHERNESS is a big theme as I reflect upon the year - it is a journey of remembering that we achieve absolutely nothing on our own AND that we are not on our own. We must be willing to tear down the walls we have built to protect ourselves, to shed the old energy and allow curiosity to take us into new, exciting, collaborative and co-creative spaces. When we take the risk to open ourselves to the GRAND ADVENTURE we begin to experience how similar we all are - we awaken to the spirit of UBUNTU - I AM because WE ARE - and we extend ourselves into this beautiful shared experience.
We meet most of our beneficiaries at a crossroad, between the dark and the light, at the far edges of their experience. We extend an invitation to them - a call to adventure - to take the leap, to step onto our life-changing platform and Awaken the Leader within. It is such a humbling experience to walk the journey next to them as they transform from deep within… UNLEASHING GREATNESS.
ALL IT TAKES IS A MOMENT TO TAKE OFF ON THE RIGHT PATH….
Welcome to our Annual Report 2019/20 - I am so glad you are here ♥︎
May you enjoy our year in words and pictures. And may you feel inspired to join us in our vision… as a Shareholder in the Well-Being of our Society.
with Love, Karina
FOREWORD by Karina Andersen, Founder
I am humbled by a year of incredible growth.
We have opened so many new and exciting doors and partnered with like-minded souls who deeply connect to our passion and our purpose. These partnerships have allowed us to extend ourselves even further and gift especially South African youth-at-risk with our enabling platform, a TRI toolkit and our SmilingOne Change Agents!
2018/19 has allowed for years of deeply focused Change Agent work to move to the next level! I love how the journey guides us. It keeps revealing the steps to take. At times we are called to pause and at other times we are called to stretch. It has been a year of huge stretch. It continues to ask for more and that we bow to the process. Only when we bow can we open our hearts and minds to purify our intent. We are here to SERVE a much greater purpose than ourselves. We want to cause ripples of change which will echo in the hearts and minds of those we touch. We want to leave a lasting footprint and be woven into the tapestry of lives transformed forever. Just like nature every single process is connected. WE are all connected! There is a greater rhythm to honour - a grand symphony. My task is to keep us honest and aligned to this wonderful balance which begins with how we as a SmilingOne Team live and practice our own consciousness toolkit, grounding ourselves firmly, moving from our deepest essence.
I am thrilled to share our annual report with you and invite you to celebrate with us the wonderful progress…
In Gratitude, Karina - SmilingOne Founder
Malcolm Booysen is one of our dear and trusted team members in our SmilingOne Family - a Change Agent - I have personally worked with him the past 4+ years. Energy, determination, growth mindset, passion and the most gentle Heart is just a few of the many many wonderful attributes of Malcolm. He has a strong facilitation toolbox and always keen to expand as the eternal Student he is.
As we don't have funding/sponsors at the moment to pay Malcolm enough to sustain himself fully we are kindly asking our network if you maybe are keen to sponsor him via SmilingOne to work with the youth in his community in Ocean View, Cape Town. Malcolm has prepared this presentation for you...
My heart continues to be moved deeply by our Change Agent work. We have completed another year - our 9th - of bringing C.O.C. Education to some of the most challenged environments in our Society. I am in AWE of the results we are experiencing; so
many 'seeds' are sprouting and watering other 'seeds' in the process. An awakened individual understands that he/she has so many more options than choosing a life of crime and destruction. I see so much potential; the fire is burning in me/us to do so
much more.
I am aware that we would have achieved nothing without the incredible commitment of men and women who dedicated themselves wholeheartedly to this path. We know that it is not an easy one! My gratitude goes to each of you for having had the courage to choose YOU, for investing in becoming your best version. Life tests us over and over again so that we may purify our intentions and strip off all the layers of past limitations. Consciousness is a daily GYM. There is nothing more attractive than someone who radiates values-based leadership and generously shares of their awakening. This is the true Magic of a Change Agent.
The Change Agent....this is how we address crime in South Africa.
ENJOY OUR ANNUAL REPORT
With Love
Karina
The year of 2017/18 is our 10th year in loving action and deeply committed contribution to making a difference in our beloved South Africa. It is a milestone! We pause and reflect on the wonderful achievements of our fellow TRI students who have embraced personal values-based leadership and live to be an example. Their success is our success. In true Ubuntu Spirit there is not one without the other!
THE CHANGE AGENT…
this is how we address crime in South Africa.
I am deeply humbled as I witness incredible courage amongst our students. We meet them in some of the toughest environments and extend to them the invite of change. Let us not underestimate what this means! It is for each student a complete rebuild of what he or she knows. It is a daily challenge of meeting and shifting the old energy and choosing a different approach.
You will in our annual report meet these courageous beings and witness what they do with a changed mindset; a mindset that no longer violates or perpetrates; a mindset that cares deeply to restore and heal , to nurture, inspire and to contribute. They have joined the heartbeat of transformation and play a significant role in guiding our SA youth and communities towards a greater future!
May you enjoy our Annual Report

What a truly special 2013 we have had!
I am touched by the many opportunities given to us to facilitate change in our challenged communities in South Africa, I experience so much love, so much joy and a deep connectedness. I am grateful for a very special team of Change Agents that selflessly reach out to touch and teach, simply because they know deep within what it means to both laugh and cry, to rise and fall and experience life in and through its seasons. What makes the difference is the understanding of that each season has its own teaching and once we tap fully into the lessons it comes with we can taste the sweetness of its fruit - deep within us - and we can trust that nothing is there without a reason.
2013 has reminded me of meeting in our shared humanity and that we are not here to do it on our own. Let us travel together! BE together. Nelson Mandela and his legacy inspires this in us - to keep living true to our hearts, that inner deep calling, voices that truly cares, voices that heal and reach out to each other, voices that builds a healthy nation on equality and love. And as we say our goodbye to one of the greatest leaders of our time we also embrace the opportunity to fuel each of our steps with greater awareness and a much broader "WE Consciousness".
May you enjoy our newsletter and tune into the energy of an inspiring season in our SmilingOne Foundation.
We look forward to share much more with you in 2014.
Happy New Year!

Turning point of Lansing, Michigan, Rite of Passage Graduation Transition cel...Howard Spence
This Presentation Documents the Rites of Passage Graduation Celebration for the Seniors of the Turning Point of Lansing, Michigan Non-Profit Community Organization. The Turning Point is comprised of a group of dedicated men in the Lansing Minority community who donate many hours of their time to mentor, direct, and counsel young black males residing in the Greater Lansing, Michigan area.
Many of the young men are from single family homes. Some had encountered adjustment problems in the public school systems and need someone in their corner to help them figure out how to navigate the difficult transition from Boys to Men for black adolescent youth.
This presentation shows some of the phases of the Rites of Passage ceremony, and also the reception immediately after the graduation ceremony. The ceremony was held at Lansing Community College at Dart auditorium on May 13, 2015.
A separate photo album presentation is also uploaded in which approximately 90 photographs taken at the even are shared.
Letter from the CEO:
As I write my inspiration to you today I am reflecting on the seeds we plant in this very special garden of life.
One of our TRI Students in Helderstroom Prison shared with me recently how he is harvesting the fruits of those very early deposits he made in his life, seeds planted with fear and limitation. He is waking up in the middle of his own creation and deeply impacted by its ripple effect. He is shaken. With different tools he is now expanding on his garden, understanding that he is a puzzle piece in a bigger puzzle - we are all connected and each seed has impact. Today he is conscious about sowing seeds with love, care and understanding. And yes, the old trees are still standing as reminders of deep and valuable learning processes - he embraces those with great humility. It has allowed him an understanding as he has healed and a bridge to those who still sow with fear and live in darkness. He is reaching them with his light. He is a Change Agent in the making!
These processes are touching my heart daily... when we begin to live our light beingness and touch those around us. This is why we are here... to unlock an incredible potential.
Let us be curious about the seeds we plant. Let us understand. Let us share our LIGHT

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

What an incredible season in our foundation… a season of celebration and honouring those
who have committed themselves to their heart! A commitment that reflects in what we as a
Foundation, as a collective – have achieved in 2013/14. I am really proud to walk hand in
hand with each one of you. Proud because I know that the journey of the heart is not always
an easy one, it is so easy to misunderstand what we meet on our path and then default back
into our old patterns and comfort zones. Our results reflect incredible courage of special souls
who have dared greatly to challenge those beliefs and invited opportunity to both shape
and grow into living a life with purpose and inspire so many others while doing this! I feel so
lucky to personally walk this journey and to bring COC Education to you. Each day I am
inspired to go deeper within which always takes me a step further beyond.
Thank you for visiting and for listening.

the Ivy Nyovane Educare. Ivan is one of our community builders
at the Educare Centre who we chose to invest in this annum.
With his capability to relate in so many ways to the kids of
Nyanga East, Ivan has brought a superb talent to the
Community Building Project.
Ivan grew up in the location of Nyanga East surrounded by
gangsterism, drug abuse and poverty. Under these violent and
criminal circumstances he needed to find his way as a boy; and as culture states also find his way as a
young man. With Ivan’s journey taking him to different paths, he ended up in dreadful circumstances
becoming one of Cape Town’s youth at risk statistics. The now cheerful young man looks at me and
explains that he is grateful to a friend, who introduced him to the programme. “Because the
programme has taught me a lot about being Ivan now, to the old Ivan. The challenges are still there
for me as a young man but I handle them differently now. My vision is to embark on a career of child
care because of the passion I have for the kids. I realise that it is not only something that I am
passionate about, I can aid with the kids and the way they choose to live their lives. Not every kid of
Nyanga has to become a gangster.”
Apart from the community builders, who did a magnificent task by giving the kids a platform of
expression, my visit on Saturdays was filled with fun, laughter and joy… and a whole lot of running
around. I felt like I was part of more than just games, I was a part of the unity and Ubuntu that
connects with the creative joy of the younger hearts. Ivan that cares so much for the kids showed me
the platform that we as the elderly youth should create for the younger hearts. Well done
community builders for not only giving the kids a place of creativity but for also inviting Ubuntu to
the Nyanga East community.
Ivan who has been a part of the community builders for four years now will activate his third pillar of
his COC very soon; embarking on studies to further his skill on working with the kids and inspiring
change.

Change Agents in the Making by Karina
SA Prisons
My heart beats proudly and strong for our prison process.
This is where it all began in 2008 – our first Circle of Sharing.
I remember my first visit in 2007 to Brandvlei Maximum. 16
Men curious and at the same time scared – what will this
unknown process bring? I am smiling as I really had no idea how huge this would become – a seed
planted in one of our most challenged environments in South Africa. HUGE because it touches so
deeply and shifts us from the core! We move from limited lanes of fear on our highways of life into a
full spectrum of awareness, always leaving the door open for more. It changes lives and it inspires
love and healing wherever you turn to. Hearts healed radiate light and create platforms for others to
invite change into their lives. These truly special Men are living ‘BE THE CHANGE YOU WISH TO SEE
IN THE WORLD’ – wisdom shared by our beloved Nelson Mandela. These men are leaders of a
different kind. Gentle Giants, guided by their Hearts and inviting you to be guided by yours. It is a
privilege to walk amongst these Men, to guide and be guided.
We are active in Heldestroom Prison, Malmesbury Prison and Worcester Prison.
What is COC Education? It is a life long commitment to your heart! A journey of learning and growth
that never ends…
Igshaan in Heldestroom Prison shares:
I have done so many classes, some 2 weeks, others 4 weeks. The SmilingOne class is the first class I
have attended that is this long. I have been in the program now for more than 1,5 years. Simply
because there is always something new to add, something new to learn. I arm myself with education,
an education that lies within the experiences I have in life… I look at life itself and I realise that life is a
test; the things we experience in life is our teacher, it is up to us as Students to learn to handle
situations; are we going to make use of our tools and not make the same old stupid choices we did in
the past. The opportunity in this class is to prepare myself completely – this is the first class where I
would use the word ‘completely’. It is because this class takes me beyond. It is only here that I have
come to know what that actually means! And I am still learning… .

Jonathan’s ‘Personal Balance Profile’ (PBP) Journey
This year April I pass a year outside of prison. It does not look like much but it is a milestone
compared to what I think would have happened if I was still stuck in my old patterns; I doubt that I
would have been this structured. I was never conscious about going to prison. And my choices were
destructive not only for myself, my family too. Seeing now that my choice of actions lead me to
prison.
One of my biggest lessons that I have learned so far is that irrespective the influence that other
peoples choices have on my life…I am in control of my own destiny. Because my family always talked
about the friends I choose, not being good for me. My circle is a lot smaller than before and I consider
everyone my friend. As a wise man, I can choose who I socialise with. For no matter who is your friend
the ability to choose will reflect your own actions. As an ex-inmate I am aware of criticism in the
community, for crime hurts our communities. I hold on to my values and do not allow pettiness to
upset me.
That irrespective the influence that other people’s choices have on my life…I
am in control of my own destiny!
If I did not have the tools I have today, it would have been so much different for me. Thank you to
my church and congregation (RUC Community), to my coach and the folks at Loaves and Fishes, I
have a great support structure.

Community Building
Nyanga Youth Development Program
by Franklin Esau
It gives me great joy to introduce the Nyanga Youth
Development Programme for there are many aspects
that contribute to making it whole. We have the Ivy
Nyovane Educare, where we journey with the principal
and founder as they take the crèche into new heights.
We also have the Youth at Risk whom we aid in bursaries to expand their educational
platform and train as Community Builders.
I am honoured to share these
wonderful young souls with you, who
are our Community Builders in the
Nyanga East area, at the Ivy
Nyovane Educare. The team which
consist of Shawn, Ivan and Bukiwe, is
having classes with the young ones in
Nyanga every Saturday.
Shawn
I just love to work with the kids, they are amazing. Many of them
have no place of belonging. And with classes every Saturday, they
feel like they belong to something.
Ivan
It is great for the kids to have something they can do. Like in arts
and craft, they can draw, make cards and express themselves. And
they are very talented.
Bukiwe
For me to share my skills with the kids is just awesome. And they all seems to enjoy it so
much that they want to do everything.
Ma Esther (Founder):
For me its wonderful to see the kids here on Saturdays because all of the schools and crèches
are closed on weekends. So the kids have a place where they can come learn and have fun.
Sometimes I cook for them but if I am not here or arrive late, I just ask one of the
community builders to cook for the kids.
OURPROJECTS–COMMUNITYBUILDING
14. The Community Builders have classes every Saturday with the kids in
Nyanga, from 9-12am. The classes consist of Arts and Craft (Ivan),
Singing and Dancing (Bukiwe) and Drama (Shawn). An educational
platform that is not only fun and games but also introduces the flavour
of talent, vision and imagination. The team of community builders have
been part of SmilingOne’s TRI (The Responsible Individual) training at
the Ivy Nyovane Educare since the programme began in 2010. And are
still going strong with Sharing sessions with a Change Agent every
Friday.
With both the community builders and the founder of Ivy Nyovane sharing a passion for the
youth of tomorrow, it is heartwarming to see them work together, creating an educational
platform for the kids of Nyanga East. Thank you so much community builders, your ripple
effect touches my heart.

The Ivy Nyovane Launch by Vuyiswa and Ma Esther
A big smile brushes my eyes when I ask Ma Esther (Founder of Ivy
Nyovane), how she felt about the Ivy Nyovane’s Renovation Launch.
I can see her cheeks getting red in appreciation.
Ma Esther
Everything went so well, I was very surprised
by the way the launch went. I expected it to
be very small and just enough space for the
kids. But it went past my expectations. My
greatest moment about the launch was to
see the kids who are with the Community
Builders dancing and singing, I love them.
I am so glad for SmilingOne’s help in all of it. This would have not
been possible if we did not start walking hand in hand four years ago
with SmilingOne. And thank you to all who came on board and played a
part in the renovations.
Vuyiswa (Principal)
We are so lucky to have people like
SmilingOne and Thorp coming on board to
help us in our renovations. It is helping us in
ways you would not believe. Hey, my best
moment was the teachers’ performance of a
song. They enjoyed themselves very much.
But the moment that topped it all was that
day was my birthday and I received flowers
from SmilingOne to congratulate our
achievement and to wish me happy birthday.
We say thank you to Thorp, GM Childlife and UTE Force for aiding the Ivy Nyovane
Educare. Together we can do so much more!
15. SKILLS AND DEVELOPMENT
Malmesbury COC Workshop by Franklin
I have been so exciting about the prison process and my
contribution, the COC report workshop for our team at
Malmesbury Prison.
The Change Agent committee oversees running of projects and have developed a reporting system to
assist this process. Monitors and facilitators (peer guides) of SmilingOne programmes report/submit
their activities to us. My objective with the workshop was to give clarity on how to report.
As we start the workshop, the peer guides explains that they have an idea of what the ‘Circle Of
Change’ means but it is just theory. As I explain to them that they actually have been practicing it for
a while. Each activity is part of their COC development.
- One sharing pillar:
- Two caring pillar:
- And three resource pillar:
Sharing
As a ‘Peer Guide’ we are guided by our trainer and mentor. This is a platform where we express our
challenges and meaning. It is where we begin to have visions
and carry them out through focuses daily practices/actions
Caring
We walk our talk as ‘Peer Guides’ and invite others to join TRI.
We facilitate TRI1 and TRI2 using the TRI manual
Resource
We use our skill and build on it. We expand and add more
lanes to our experience. We work towards sustainable
livelihoods. The TRI Facilitation and Peer Guide Education
assists in this expansion using COC engine
Monthly projects reports will consist of your activity within
each of these three pillars. Your report on your personal TRI sessions with your trainer and mentor.
You report on sessions you facilitate with others and last but not least you report on your skills
development – from TRI, to school to any other developing classes.
Good luck boys and Ilse, may your reports shine just like you guys do!

16. Our Annual General Meeting
Our Annual General Meeting
This is what Sheree Rayfield, a great friend and support of
SmilingOne had to say:
Firstly I was impress by the attendance and the time
keeping. The representatives of each project introduced
and detailed how they “blended” into the overall
SmilingOne picture, which made it so simple to follow the
procedures. I was also impressed by the information the
various project leaders being concise and relevant, and no
waffling. The AGM was short in comparison to all the
information provided and for me that is a plus. Every
project leader was so enthusiastic and visionary about
their respective goals, it made me feel as if I should be
doing more and that there is still so much to be done.
Karina is doing a fantastic job co-ordinating and inspiring
the various groups within the SmilingOne Foundation,
which within itself is no easy task. Overall huge strides are
being made leaving very large footprints and in doing so
CHANGE IS HAPPENING. It was a great experience and it
gave me a sense of hope that the changes will make the
huge differences we need in todays communities.
Thank you so much to you and those who walk with us for a crime free South Africa. We can do so
much more together.
17. FUTURE PROJECTS AND EVENTS

Long walk to freedom
It is with great anticipation that we walk our journey
sometimes we take a left turn, sometimes we take one to
the right, and sometimes end up in front of the highest
mountains, where we find ourselves in compromising
positions.
The autobiography that carries high hopes in the most
condemning time, opening up a vision of change, peace and
humanity on a level that many thought would be
impossible. In so, we as the SmilingOne Foundation would
like to draw inspiration from a man and his journey, that not
only inspired a nation but the world. As we go from one
season to the next we would like to look at the changes of
many journeys, knowing there is a lot to be learned. A lot
more still to add to the puzzle. And many more people to
meet, who will inspire us to not only work on a crime free
South Africa but to inspire a nation to join hands, aiding in
our communities.
