ASSIGNMENT 1- (20%)
Instructions
1. This is a pair work assignment. Marks will
be awarded equally for both members.
2. Choose ONE of the following themes:
 People
 Food
 Entertainment
3. Choose a topic within any one of the above-
mentioned themes that allows two or more
elements that share a common basis to be
compared and/or contrasted.
4. Read articles that are related to your topic.
You will need to cite at least four sources of
evidence (2 per person) to support your stand.
However, you may find that you need to read
more to get a better understanding of your topic.
Read each of your sources critically and
highlight/underline the relevant sections. Using
a note card, make notes and don’t forget to
document each source to avoid plagiarism. Clip
the note card on the article that was referred to.
5. Narrow down to a tentative title. Consult
respective lecturer for approval of title.
6. Develop a thesis. Evaluate or interpret each
source, then show the relationship between the
sources and your thesis.
7. Based on these sources, write a compare-
contrast essay.
8. You can move from point-to-point, back and
forth between items being compared. It can be
set into blocks, where one item is completely
discussed before moving on to the next.
 9. This essay should be 600 – 650 words,
typed in 12-point font size in Times New
Roman, 1.5 spacing. All drafts, peer review
form and feedback from lecturer have to be
compiled in a pocket file (recycle files are
encouraged) and handed in.
 12. Submit by 10th February 2017.
